DIY Decorative Juju Hat Inspired Wall Decor Tutorial

African/Cameroon Juju hats have been around as home decor for a few years. They’re so beautiful, artisanal/handmade (symbolize prosperity, worn by ceremonial dancers). DIY decorative Juju hat inspired tutorial:

When a friend of mine had to part ways with her African Juju hat wall decor (you don’t want to know), she was in the market for a replacement. It’s been a while since I’ve been crafty and what better time than the new year for a fresh start?! Perfect timing. A perfect opportunity to focus on the positive and to send some good juju to a friend.

What’s your first DIY project of the new year? Looking for and easy, fun and “GOOD” DIY to jumpstart 2022? This is the perfect little project for you to try! I felt empowered and inspired so I opened up my Amazon app and ordered these supplies:

diy materials for juju hat wall decor

Materials I used (referral links):

cardboard circle (could easily make one from recycled cardboard too, especially if you’ve been procrastinating the holiday clean up!)

• feather trim ( purchased 2 of this feather trim and 1 of this feather fringe trim)

• aluminum pop top (removed from can) to hang (could also use string or hang with push pins)

Tools:

hot glue gun/sticks, scissors

What I did:

I found the center of my cardboard circle. From there, I drew a straight line to the outer edge.

tape measure

Using scissors, I cut along the line.

Next, using hot glue along one side of the cut, I glued the other side slightly on top to create a little bit of a ‘bowl’-shape. It’s very slight…just enough to give it a 3D look.

Then, protect your fingers ‘cuz that hot glue is HOT! Be careful! (I used a capped pen to hold down the ribbon as needed.) Determine placement and start attaching the bottom of the feather trip to the cardboard circle. I worked my way around the outer edge.

Repeat in circles for complete coverage. Based on your supplies, determine how close together to cover the cardboard. I alternated the 2 different feather trims.

For the center, add a coordinating or same color silk flower. Or, like me, take a bit of leftover trim and roll to create a “center” piece. Attach with hot glue.

Fill in with individual feathers as needed.

Attach hanging mechanism of choice to the back with hot glue.

Easy peasy! Much lighter and not as detailed or heavy as the real thing but beautiful none-the-less and special because you made it yourself!

The result:

Texture! Softness. Beauty!

I’m hooked and plan to create several more! More feather trim as been ordered! I need a fluffier one! A feather boa would work as well (although a little messier)! Maybe some rattan coasters for the center or a coordinating silk peony would be beautiful too. I’ll come back and post more pictures. Interested in adding yours to the feature? How about you? Ready to get crafty, creative and inspired in 2022?

DIY Chocolate Candy Wedding Party Favor Gifts

DIY Chocolate Candy Wedding Party Favor Gifts

Isn’t it funny where inspiration comes from? At times, it’s somewhere completely random or even unknown. I’m thinking the inspiration for these DIY chocolate candy wedding party favor gifts may have been handmade soaps or even those beautiful yogurt bowls I’ve seen on Instagram. To be honest, I’m not sure – I’ve done some searching and haven’t stumbled across anything similar.

DIY chocolate candy melts bridal wedding shower party favor gifts tutorial @diyshowoff essential oil infused gift idea

I made these up as a hostess party gift/favor and got drafted to make up some bridal shower favors. So here’s my DIY tutorial for beautiful chocolate/candy melts. They are so easy! Some affiliate links included.

Supplies I used: DIY chocolate candy melts bridal wedding shower party favor gifts tutorial @diyshowoff essential oil infused gift idea

Total Time: Approximately 30 min.

Serves: This silicone mold is a large size (3×3 inch). Two bags of melts makes 6.

What I did:

I transferred candy melts to quart sized baggy (I used two: light cocoa and white) and melted according to package instructions – either in the microwave or in a double boiler. My experience: I carefully set both bags (unzipped) into the microwave on ‘defrost’ for 50 seconds then checked and repeated and re-checked until melted. Instructions warn against overheating and I didn’t have any issue.

*Melted candy will be hot. Please use caution!

I set my silicone mold on a small cookie sheet (a tray or something that gives the mold support to be moved and that will fit into your freezer works).

Once my candy was melted, I added 2-4 drops of Peppermint Vitality essential oil to the melted white candy, zipped the bag and kneaded the baggy to mix. I didn’t do it with both colors, just one.

Then I snipped off a bottom corner of the baggy (very small snip!) with scissors and piped the candy into the silicone mold and repeated with the other color. I filled each silicone space with half and half of each candy into each square.

Next I gently shook/shimmied the mold to level the melted candy.

Using the skewer, while candy was still melted, I swirled the colors to create a beautiful unique design where the colors meet.

I am in LOVE with how each square is a unique and one of a kind design! I think this was my favorite step! I started out with just more of a zig zag but then discovered that the more swirly, the better.  DIY chocolate candy melts bridal wedding shower party favor gifts tutorial @diyshowoff essential oil infused gift idea breakfast at tiffany's

Then quickly decorated with icing roses, sprinkles, colored sugar, edible decorations, etc.

I placed the tray/silicone mold in freezer to set the candy. It didn’t seem to take long at all…probably about 15-20 minutes if that. Sometime I let it sit overnight if I got busy.

Then I removed them from freezer and carefully popped the bars out of silicone mold.

I placed them into a bag and secured with a personalized label.

Beautiful! I love that each design is unique, don’t you? They’re so pretty, so professional and designer-looking but so easy to create! I can’t wait to make more!

This batch was a “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” theme.

DIY chocolate candy melts bridal wedding shower party favor gifts tutorial @diyshowoff essential oil infused gift idea breakfast at tiffany's I whipped up 60-70 of these for a bridal shower but since you can personalize them with any candy melts (so many colors!) and any deco ratings (so many colors and shapes and ideas!), they’d work for not only bridal showers but for Mother’s Day, baby showers, wedding favors, party favors, hostess and teacher gifts, prizes, etc. I made a few every evening over a couple of weeks’ time. I gave a few out as essential oil infused door prizes and at Easter to my family too. I even had my grandson helping me decorate a few!

Happy New Year

Wishing you a year filled with happiness and blessings!

I had decorating intentions, plans to create a New Year’s mantel or a Happy New Year’s party-themed vignette but then I got distracted but this cutie. Way more fun! Don’t you agree? 2015 is going to be a year filled with new traditions…activities, things I haven’t done in over 20+some years. But now that I’m a grandma, I’m looking forward to every minute I can get with this gorgeous little man…New Year's Baby @diyshowoff

Happy New Year, Happy 2015!

Happy New Year!

I know, I’m a day late but Mr. DIY and I were recovering from New Year’s Eve. Not in the way you might think. We’re not party animals but we did stay up to count down and watch the ball drop meaning we were up past our usual bedtime. But anyway, Happy New Year, happy 2014, friends! No confetti or noise makers but my written sentiment is just as celebratory! newyear2014

Do you make a new year’s resolution? I don’t because more often than not, I’m good to go for a few days before I forget or give up. But I do like the idea of a word of the year (inspired by Layla at the Lettered Cottage). Just one word. Just for me. For focusing on goals, thoughts and plans for the new year.

Earlier this week I shared a tutorial for a glitter iron-on vinyl decal.iron on vinyl glitter decal tshirt tutorial

Did you see it? Now don’t go thinking I’m all crazy when I say my word of the year is “horse”. Are you laughing?! Did I hear a snort?

Say what? Horse?! Nay (neigh?), really? Yep! This is how my brain works: Choosing a word for 2014 has been on my mind. And when I was working on a project for the glitter iron-on vinyl tutorial…I procrastinated. My glitter monogramed stockings didn’t happen so a plan B came into play. And I happen to really like graphic t-shirts right now so my project plan changed to dressing one up. I didn’t want a Happy New Year t-shirt. Ya know? I mean…there’s a really small window of when that’s wearable. So it got me to wondering what the Chinese zodiac symbol for 2014 is and I discovered: it’s the year of the horse. (It got you wondering along the same lines, right? No? It’s official. I’m weird.)

Anyway – I’m not really sure what all that means. I mean, according to the Chinese calendar, I’m a dog. But 2014 is the year of the horse and then it got me thinking of 4 things that horses symbolize…

  • grace
  • inner strength
  • freedom
  • treasure

What do you mean treasure doesn’t relate to the horse? My word. My symbolism. K? Of course I don’t own a real live horse but I’m pretty sure they’re expensive to have. That means $. And $ is treasure, is it not? See…I’m rational and in my right mind. So there you have it. My word for the year. HORSE. Let me explain a little more or if no one is reading, at least journal for reference so I don’t forget and whinny and gallop all of 2014 instead. (I can’t get that sweet prancercize lady out of my head now. Not sure what I mean? Search youtube. You’ll want to be able to identify prancercize moves in my upcoming DIY videos. Kidding!) Ahem. Back to the reason for my choice of word of the year:

  • Grace. Okay, I admit it, I lack coordination and you really won’t see me practicing prancercize. I don’t possess grace in that sense. But I’m more specifically referring to God’s love and mercy. That grace. Because it’s so easy to get wrapped up in everything else that’s going on, “horse” is going to remind me to devote more time to Him.
  • I often tend to be quiet, unsure of myself, indecisive. I need to harness some inner strength (it’s in there somewhere, right?) to change the things I consider my weaknesses. I don’t know why I’m the way I am but those things about myself get on my nerves. It looks like they’re not going to change on their own so I’m counting on some inner strength for courage to change. That will lead to this:
  • In 2014, I’m working on being free of anxiety, worry and lack of confidence. It doesn’t come naturally, so freedom from those weights is a biggy.
  • Treasure. This relates to how I want the people in my life to feel. Isn’t it so easy to take those closest to us for granted? It doesn’t happen on purpose but it happens nonetheless. I want to remember to be thoughtful and to let others know how much they mean to me, to know they are treasured. And just so you know, in case I haven’t told you in a while, I treasure you for taking the time to stop by, for reading along (you’re still here, right?), for being supportive, for your friendship. You being here is this blog’s biggest treasure.

Did you notice the first letter of those four things? G-I-F-T. Along with ‘horse’. Because last but not least, I want to apply the old saying “Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.” to my life. In other words, most of all…every day is a gift and I’m going to be grateful for that gift for every.single.day. grateful

So every time I see a horse this year, real or not, I’ll be thinking of grace, inner strength, freedom, treasure, the gift of life.

Does that explain “horse” as my word of the year? Make sense? If not…just process it it a little more. And if you still just don’t get it, it’s okay. It only has to make sense to me, really. Last year I just made a list of goals (not all were accomplished so it’s spilling over into 2014 too!). 2012, my word was “keep“. What’s your word of the year?

Wishing you the best year ever!

~Roeshel

Ps. Today would have been my dad’s 72nd birthday. I sure do miss him. He did have horses and I do cherish memories of horseback riding with him. Fond memories when it comes to remembering laughing with my dad. Not so fond when I remember not being able to sit comfortably afterwards.

Pps. I actually have 3 horse figurines/statue-things and was going to include pretty horse themed vignettes for your viewing pleasure and to help this post make a little more sense or at least more tolerable but it didn’t happen. I apologize. But I bet you’ll see them in my home and decorating throughout the year! And then I’ll edit this post and add them in. If I don’t forget. Maybe I should have considered “elephant”, huh? An elephant never forgets. 😉

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year, DIY Show Off friends! happy new year

Thank YOU for an awesome year of friendship, encouragement, support and sharing DIY, decorating, home improvement and crafts. If it wasn’t for you or for sharing our love of DIY and decorating, the hard work involved with blogging wouldn’t have the special meaning that it does. And as revisited my 2012 DIY projects, I couldn’t help but think that the BEST part of 2012 wasn’t my DIY at all. Nope. It was the DIY community, my DIY friends, DIYShowOff readers, my blogging buddies. YOU are the best part of DIY Show Off, YOU are a blessing, the reward and your comments encourage more creativity and motivation to move from one completed project to the next. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I’m looking forward to another year of getting to know, making new friends and of course, more do-it-yourself decorating and home improvement.

2013 GOALS

new years resolutions 2013

Do you make new year’s resolutions? I call them “goals”. Here are my thoughts for me starting 2013 off on the right foot:

  • time management: Develop a schedule for blogging, projects and life. My current schedule is random and although I’ve adjusted to working from home, I need to create a routine. I’m not spending the right amount of time for each task I’d like to complete, even on a daily basis. Do you have any tips that help keep you on track? I’d love to hear ’em!time
  • blogging:  Working towards another successful year of doing what I love and being better at it. DIY dream art
  • loving:  Adjusting to an empty nest means there’s just something missing at home. Our girls are on their own and we lost our doxie 3 years ago. In 2013, we’re opening our hearts and home to a dog. Our rescue application has already been submitted. Just waiting for a match. Can’t wait to share our new fur-bundle of joy with you when the time comes. If you’re a long time DIYShowOff follower, then you know that our doxie, Niski, was a big part of my blogging. I can’t tell you how excited I am to have a canine assistant again.
  • hobby:  Become a better photographer {practice.practice.practice.}

Roeshel

  • DIY:  Of course there will be DIY! on the list: a dreamy cottage style bathroom makeover is a must as well as finally completing the family room/craft room but my biggest DIY *wish* for 2013: new windows, a welcoming front door (previous owners re-routed the ‘front’ door to the side when building an enclosed porch) and some pretty landscaping. It‘s a mess of a jungle out there! This is the view of our old farmhouse from the road…

fixer upper farmhouse

Seriously…a holly bush has turned into a 20 foot tree. And it looks as if this old farmhouse has turned her back to the world in shame, doesn’t it? Hoping to help her smile with pride in 2013.

Wishing you a happy, healthy, amazing new year…

Happy New Year Wish

My Happy New Year wish for you

Is for your best year yet,
A year where life is peaceful,
And what you want, you get.
A year in which you cherish
The past year’s memories,
And live your life each new day,
Full of bright expectancies.
I wish for you a holiday
With happiness galore;
And when it’s done, I wish you
Happy New Year, and many more.
