DIY Halloween Vignette

Decorating for Halloween? I’m not much of a Halloween decorator but I do have friends with October birthdays and these make a great gifts!

EASY Halloween Wall Art

DIY Halloween decor @diyshowoffYou’ll need these items from the craft store:

  • stretched burlap
  • felt placemat
  • felt decor
  • glue dots (or recommended: hot glue)

Using lots and lots of glue dots or hot glue, layer and secure the felt placemat onto the stretched burlap canvas (glue dots = temporary and using stretched burlap for another project in the future, hot glue = more permanent). Then secure the felt decoration on top of the felt placemat. It doesn’t get much easier than that!

Colorblock Art

The area above the bed in the guest room was in need of a little something…

Guest Room/Nursery reveal @diyshowoff

I didn’t photograph the area in my guest room/nursery reveal closely because it was bare. But not anymore…

DIY color block sunburst wall art tutorial @diyshowoffI grabbed:

  • 48 x 22 inch plyboard (recycled from shipping packaging but available at the hardware store too)
  • FrogTape® MultiSurface
  • paint

Since my board was stored in the basement, I cleaned away the dust.

Then measured and marked the center of my board.

DIY color block sunburst wall art tutorial @diyshowoff

Next I applied FrogTape to create a sunburst design, starting from the center marking. I just placed my pieces randomly.

Using a gift card, I burnished the edges of the tape to get clean crisp lines.

DIY color block sunburst wall art tutorial @diyshowoff

Then painted each area, applying paint in the direction of the wood grain with a foam brush.

DIY color block sunburst wall art tutorial @diyshowoff

While paint was still wet, I carefully removed the Frogtape then let my painting dry.

Add picture hanging hardware or use velcro hangers to display the masterpiece! It fills the space nicely and adds pops of color. Fun! A great way to add a big statement for little cost.

{notice the photobomber? lol!}

I’m not very “artistic” when it comes to painting but a geometric pattern is something anyone can do. Coordinate colors with your existing decor, make a big statement without breaking the bank.

DIY Nursery Wall Decor

I’ve been giving our guest room a bit of a makeover to include a little nursery space for my very first grand child who is scheduled to arrive next month. I can’t wait! You guys, a sweet baby boy will be here soon! I’m so excited, I can’t stand it!

Materials: I found this old oval wall art at the thrift store for 3.99.

DIY nursery wall art tutorial

I had the wrapping paper and felted deer head (used in our stairwell/landing makeover originally. I looked and it’s no longer for sale…sorry but I did see awesome paper mache deer heads at Michaels that would work well too…plus you can paint/decoupage to coordinate with your room.). So this is a thrifty treasure for me…just $3.99 for the dusty framed print + shopping the house since I had the spray paint on hand already too.

What I did: Gave everything a good cleaning and removed the backing from the frame (set aside).

I spray painted the frame gold and let it dry.

I traced the oval backing onto chevron wrapping paper. I did glue the wrapping paper over the print on the front. However, it’s not required if you’d like to preserve the print.  DIY nursery wall art tutorial DIY nursery wall art tutorialDIY nursery wall art tutorial

Then just reattached the backing to the frame.

I hung it on the wall and hammered a nail in the center to hang the felted deer head and added a DIY banner…just card stock, Project Life cards (scrapbook section at Michaels) and twine. I added a string of mini LED fairy lights too.

Silhouette Scrap Wood Wall Art

I recently shared the DIY coat rack we’re now utilizing in our sitting room above a vintage trunk used as a bench…

See who loves to rest here? It’s a tiny little Italian greyhound named Rosie…

One more picture. She’s just so stinkin’ cute!

and I’m loving this scrap wood turned silhouette art placed above it. Rosie approves!DIYShowOff Wood Plank Wall Art

Materials I used:

  • scrap 1 x 6 pine boards
  • RustOleum Ultimate Wood Care (kona)
  • RustOleum Ultimate Polyurethane
  • Gorilla wood glue
  • picture hanging hardware
  • vinyl decal (I used a greyhound shape)
  • white acrylic craft paint

What I did:

I cut my pine boards so that they all measured the same 30 inches long then sanded the edges.

Next I used wood glue and clamps to create a large wood plank canvas. Let dry.

DIY wood plank sign tutorial

I applied my vinyl decal to the center of my wood canvas, burnishing the edges using my thumbnail.

DIY wood plank sign tutorial

Then using a foam brush, I applied the stain in the same direction as the wood grain.

DIY wood plank sign tutorial

After a few minutes, I wiped away the excess stain, again in the direction of the wood grain, with an old rag. Let dry one hour.

Then I removed the vinyl decal. I was hoping that there wouldn’t be any seeping but there was. No problem! Change of plans. Sometimes DIY doesn’t always go according to plan.

DIY wood plank sign tutorial

I used a small craft paint brush and white acrylic craft paint to fill in the unfinished portion of the greyhound stencil. Let dry.

I then applied a coat of the polyurethane over the stain, brushing on in the direction of the wood grain. Add picture hanging hardware to the back and hang to display.

Easy DIY Indoor Outdoor Honeycomb Wall Art

As a member of the Lowe’s Creative Ideas team, I have the opportunity to participate in monthly DIY challenges. One of the themes for April is outdoor wall art. I just happen to have a bare outdoor wall. This easy DIY indoor/outdoor honeycomb wall art project is super easy and perfect for decorating an outdoor wall in our covered party patio area.

easy DIY hexagon wall art at diyshowoff.com

 Materials I used:

hexagon wall art tutorial at diyshowoff.com

What I did:

I spray painted the pieces of the drawer organizers (not assembled) using Valspar Outdoor Spray Paint. I sprayed one side Peacock Blue and let dry about 6 hours then flipped and sprayed the other side Koi Pond and let dry overnight.

Once the paint was dry, I assembled my pieces. The honeycomb-shaped organizers simply snap together. No tools required!

Since I have 3 sets, I assembled two sets with closed ends and one with open ends (both options shown on pamphlet with instructions included in the box).

You could even leave them white = the only DIY is snapping them together! I hung mine using Command outdoor light clips.

They’re very light weight so not ideal for displaying heavy items but a great way to add color, dimension and interest to an otherwise plain outdoor or even indoor wall. I tucked in a few succulents for now.

My covered patio area still hasn’t been cleaned up for summer. I just grabbed some accessories for photo-staging. Pardon the leaves and dirt!

The outdoor hexagon/honeycomb wall art is going to look great on that back wall when the patio is cleaned up. See the patio when it IS ready for summer lounging and entertaining here.

DIY Customizable Monogrammed Mirror Tutorial

Looking for a great gift DIY gift idea? Or some easy DIY wall art? Look no further! This framed monogrammed mirror is easy to do and easily customizable for swapping out colors and patterns. It’s perfect for those who love to decorate and easily changes to match any decor. One decorative accent, UNLIMITED looks! So fun!

One decorative accent - UNLIMITED LOOKS: DIY Interchangeable/Custom Monogrammed Mirror Tutorial

Materials:

  • Picture frame with glass – I purchased mine at TJMaxx but shop the house or thrift stores for an even better deal!
  • Krylon Looking Glass – Mirror Like Spray Paint
  • Vinyl letter decal, shape or silhouette – don’t have a Silhouette Cameo to do your cutting? Use a stencil and contact paper to create your own. Remember to ‘mirror’/’flip’ the design so that it doesn’t show backwards.
  • Scrapbook paper, wrapping paper {holiday/wedding/birthday paper for celebrating/gift giving would be cute too!}, book pages, maps, fabric…get creative! Cut to size to fit within the frame.

Tutorial:

1. Create vinyl decal to fit inside of the dimensions of the picture frame/onto the glass. Remember to mirror/flip the design so that it doesn’t show backwards (vinyl will be applied to the backside of the glass). I used my Cameo to cut out a design on vinyl.Letter A for monogrammed mirror DIY

2. Disassemble glass from frame and clean the glass. DIY monogrammed mirror tutorial

3. Apply vinyl decal to glass. I centered a letter “A”. You’ll be applying it to the backside of the mirror so you’ll want to “mirror” or flip the letter if needed so it doesn’t show up backwards. A shape or silhouette would be cute too! Example: monogram, dog, person, state, stag, word, etc.Monogrammed Mirror DIY tutorial

4. Follow instructions on Krylon Looking Glass can. Wear a respirator in poorly ventilated areas. Apply a light coat of the Krylon Looking Glass spray paint in a sweeping motion (starting off of the glass). Do this on the side of the glass with the vinyl decal. One decorative accent - UNLIMITED LOOKS: DIY Interchangeable/Custom Monogrammed Mirror Tutorial

{zero degrees outside, spray painting in the basement – pardon the poor lighting!}

5. According to the instructions, repeat the above step four more times (only waiting a minute between coats – this stuff dries fast!). Then let dry one hour before handling. I did five coats and my glass still has a semi-transparent look which I like. Try more coats for a more solid look.

6. Once dry, carefully remove the vinyl decal by lifting an edge using your fingernail or thumbnail or a vinyl weeding tool if you have one. Be careful not to scratch the mirror-painted finish (although scratches add to an antiqued/aged look). One decorative accent - UNLIMITED LOOKS: DIY Interchangeable/Custom Monogrammed Mirror Tutorial

7. Cut scrapbook paper, book pages, fabric or wrapping paper to the same dimensions as the glass. Re-assemble glass and frame and insert scrapbook or wrapping paper in the same manner as framing a picture. One decorative accent - UNLIMITED LOOKS: DIY Interchangeable/Custom Monogrammed Mirror Tutorial

All done! Include several shades and patterns of paper with your gift and let the recipient choose their favorite look to coordinate with their home.

Cool, right? They’re going to love it and you’re going to want one for yourself!

Monogrammed Mirror Tutorial DIY mirror DIY mirror DIY mirror DIY mirror

You can’t tell from my pictures but the mirrored surface is very reflective. I just took my photos at an angle where you weren’t seeing me and my camera’s reflection in the glass. The mirror finish also has a bit of a worn/antiqued look that I love. One decorative accent - UNLIMITED LOOKS: DIY Interchangeable/Custom Monogrammed Mirror Tutorial
