Tie Dye Party Fun

Celebrate the start of summer with snacks, sweets and some tie dye fun!

I had the opportunity to participate in trying out the Tulip One-Step Tie-Dye Party kit and cute FREE exclusive tie dye printables from Lillian Hope Designs. It’s summer time! I’m always up for hosting a fun themed event. Toss in tie dye, kids, a pretty day at the park and who can resist? To be perfectly honest, I’ve actually never tie dyed anything so I almost felt like one of the kids!

I partnered with Dana from Parties & Playdates to get a few kids together to kick off celebrating summer. With everything in the kit and free printables, it was easy to throw together a party. Everything needed to tie dye comes in the kit including 18 bottles of dye, 6 gloves, 6 t-shirts (kids large), plastic table cloth, 90 rubber bands and instructions for creating cool designs. And there a TON of cute tie dye themed party printables at TieDyeYourSummer.com. Here are just a few that we utilized:

Invitations: personalize to “get this party started”!

Cupcake wrappers and mini tie dyed-shirt cutouts: I served gluten free fun-fetti cupcakes with lemon buttercream frosting. We had organic veggies, dip and chips too.

Rectangle flags and sandwich/snack bag toppers: to coordinate bubble sticks and punch balloons favors.

Party Banner and tent cards: print and assemble the cute banner, add some tulle to create a pretty backdrop.

Water bottle labels:

We gave guests the option of bringing their own dye-able item and kept the extra t-shirts from the kit on hand too. 45 minutes before the party began, I simply added water to the powdered dye in the bottles provided and shook them to mix. Instant tie dye party!

Tie dye can be accomplished with damp or dry shirts. Our guests started with dampening their shirts at the water fountain.

The kit includes instructions for creating spirals, sunbursts, stripes, ombre, crumple, bullseye, heart and more using the rubber bands included in the kit.

Wearing plastic gloves, everyone got creative with tie dying their shirts by applying different colors of dye to the fabric after rubber bands were placed.

18 vibrant colors.

So much fun!

Then we wrapped the creations in plastic wrap and tossed them in a ziplock bag and attached a ‘wash and care’ printable: Let sit 6-8 hours or overnight for more vibrant colors. Rinse until excess dye is removed. Remove rubber bands. Wash and dry as instructed.

I was surprised with how easy it was to pull together a party with the Tulip One-Step Kit and free printables. Set up and clean up were simple. With the exception of a few drips of red on the pavilion concrete (which faded fairly quickly), dye was contained to the plastic tablecloth, rolled up and easily discarded. Quick clean up! The kids? Not too bad. Be sure to instruct parents to dress children in old play clothes just in case. You remember: kool aid mustaches, bandaid stickies, half worn temporary tattoos, popcicle drips, dirty bare feet, grass stains and a bit of tie dye = summer time and being a kid!

The results:

Those extra t-shirts? I’ll be making a few of these upcycled t-shirt reusable market bags in tie dye colors as gifts! Because co-hosting and manning the camera means I still haven’t ever tie dyed something myself. lol Next time for sure!

Michael’s has a new collection of craft products called Make Market and this month’s challenge includes the denim trend, a collection of fun denim supplies.

  • 12 x 12 stretched denim canvas
  • 12 x 12 denim panel

What I did:

1. I painted the wood pieces and set them aside to dry.

2. Next I applied the denim ribbon to the denim panel with fabric glue to create a tic tac toe board.

3. Then I used the adhesive velcro on the back of a stretched denim canvas and the denim panel to create a ‘case’ for game pieces.

4. Two denim pockets also hold each player’s game pieces. I’m thinking an inexpensive drawer handle for carrying on one side would work perfectly too.

Wasn’t that easy? Store game pieces inside the denim ‘box’.

Portable for easy carrying and fun!

DIY Nursery Wall Decor

I’ve been giving our guest room a bit of a makeover to include a little nursery space for my very first grand child who is scheduled to arrive next month. I can’t wait! You guys, a sweet baby boy will be here soon! I’m so excited, I can’t stand it!

Materials: I found this old oval wall art at the thrift store for 3.99.

DIY nursery wall art tutorial

I had the wrapping paper and felted deer head (used in our stairwell/landing makeover originally. I looked and it’s no longer for sale…sorry but I did see awesome paper mache deer heads at Michaels that would work well too…plus you can paint/decoupage to coordinate with your room.). So this is a thrifty treasure for me…just $3.99 for the dusty framed print + shopping the house since I had the spray paint on hand already too.

What I did: Gave everything a good cleaning and removed the backing from the frame (set aside).

I spray painted the frame gold and let it dry.

DIY nursery wall art tutorial

I traced the oval backing onto chevron wrapping paper. I did glue the wrapping paper over the print on the front. However, it’s not required if you’d like to preserve the print.   DIY nursery wall art tutorial   DIY nursery wall art tutorial DIY nursery wall art tutorial

Then just reattached the backing to the frame.

DIY nursery wall art tutorial

I hung it on the wall and hammered a nail in the center to hang the felted deer head and added a DIY banner…just card stock, Project Life cards (scrapbook section at Michaels) and twine. I added a string of mini LED fairy lights too.

Kids’ Plastic Picnic Table Makeover

As you know, we entertain a lot in the summer, hosting quite a few family picnics. Guests include my 3-year-old nephew and 2 and 4-year-old nieces. It was decided that I needed a kid’s table and mom scored a Little Tykes picnic table at a yard sale for me for $15. Hurray for yard sale season (and moms)!

How to paint a child's plastic picnic table

But when you don’t have a yard full of fun brightly colored kids’ toys; the red, blue and yellow looks out of place, not to mention it was faded and a little worse-for-wear.

kids picnic table before

I decided a little makeover was in order.

Materials:

  • Spray primer (2 cans)
  • Spray paint (2 cans for all over) I used Rustoleum Oil Rubbed Bronze.
  • Another can for decorative purposes (optional)
  • Spray clear coat
  • FrogTape
  • Vinyl decals (I made my own using supplies from Happy Crafters)

Tutorial:

First, I lightly sanded the picnic table with a fine grit sandpaper and gave it a good spraying with the pressure washer. (Thanks, Steve!)

washing picnic table

This also comes apart some how, but I couldn’t figure it out so I didn’t bother. Apply a coat of primer:

DIY plastic picnic table transformation

Then spray paint:

I let it dry and ‘cure’ for a few days.

Using my FrogTape, I created a rectangle (table runner) outline on the table part of the picnic table and taped off the rest of the table top.

child's picnic table makeover

Using my Silhouette Cameo and Silhouette Design Studio software, I created and cut out the letters for a dinner time prayer.

I applied the sticker type vinyl letters to the center of my rectangle and made sure FrogTape and vinyl letters were pressed down securely.

Then gave it a coat of spray paint in Rustoleum’s Lagoon. (I used a large piece of cardboard to shield the benches.)

painting plastic picnic table

I peeled away the FrogTape and decals while the paint was still wet. I still have blue fingernails to prove it.

picnic table makeover

I let that dry for a few days (in my vehicle mostly since it’s been raining off and on so much)…which is why I had no choice but to be patient as well! Then I used my FrogTape again to create a border around my “place mat” and filled it in with DecoArt’s Patio Paint. Then peeled away my FrogTape and again…let it dry for a few days.

painting kids plastic picnic table

I had to touch up the paint here and there. Then sealed it with a spray clear coat (satin finish) and let that dry.

Much better! And a sweet little reminder for the little ones to pray before digging in.

We tested it out over the fourth of July. Now it fits in with our patio…

Before/After Thrift Store Play Kitchen

No little ones at our house but I do have a 3-year-old nephew and two nieces under 4-years-old. Not to mention someday (not anytime soon…I’m in no rush), I’ll have grandchildren. So when I see fun do-it-yourself kids’ ideas, it does make me get all DIY-itchy to do something creative.

It’s almost yard sale season here in western PA and I’ll be on the hunt for an old kids’ kitchen or furniture that looks like it’d function as a play kitchen. Love this thrift store find “after” from Serena at Thrift Diving {what a great find and awesome transformation!}…

before-after-wooden-play-kitchen by Thrift Diving blog

“Thrift Diving, a blog that strongly believes that LIFE shouldn’t be financial suicide! I turn what could be expensive (i.e. decorating) into affordable, such as furniture makeovers from the thrift store. I found this $2.50 wooden play kitchen from the thrift store, and knew instantly that it would be amazing, with the right TLC. More importantly, I wanted to give it a vintage look, and less “kiddie” look. Also, I have boys, and I wanted it to be something that even they wouldn’t playing with!

I painted it in Annie Sloan Antibes Green, with Napoleonic Blue inside. I mitered some wood trim and added panels to the front, which I lined with a $2.00 vintage table cloth that I found at the thrift store, as well. I also used my Silhouette Cameo to cut new burners from vinyl, and add some finishing details, and cup hooks for the side, which hold thrifted measuring spoons.”
