DIY Fall DreamCatcher Door

Okay, DIY friends! I know it’s been a while. Life has been a little crazy so it feels like forever since I’ve had the time to do something DIY related myself but it’s beginning to get crafty over here! With Fall comes routine. Loving it! I’m kicking off autumn with this beautiful DIY fall dreamcatcher wreath (door or wall decor) tutorial! Here we go:

DIY Fall DreamCatcher Wreath Tutorial

DIY fall dreamcatcher wreath door decor tutorial @diyshowoff

What I used for the DIY Fall DreamCatcher Wreath Tutorial:

  • small hula hoop (check the clearance sections this time of year! I got mine at Michael’s Craft Store)
  • doily (affiliate link) to fit inside (a bit smaller than the hoop so that it can stretch to fit)
  • string
  • assorted ribbons, lace trim, twine, decorate rope, etc.
  • fall florals (separated using wire cutters)
  • hot glue gun and glue

DIY Fall DreamCatcher Wreath Tutorial // What I did:

I tied string to the outermost scalloped edges of the doily.

DIY fall autumn dreamcatcher door decor wreath @diyshowoff DIY fall autumn dreamcatcher door decor wreath @diyshowoff

Then using hot glue, secured one end of the string to the hula hoop, one end to the next, careful to keep it centered and pulled tight. This just temporarily holds the string in place for the next step.

DIY fall autumn dreamcatcher door decor wreath @diyshowoff DIY fall autumn dreamcatcher door decor wreath @diyshowoff DIY fall autumn dreamcatcher door decor wreath @diyshowoff

Next, I tied the doily to the hoop with knots all the way around. Trim ends

I then covered the hula hoop using 4 inch wide ribbon, securing the beginning and end with hot glue.

Then cut different ribbons, lace trim, twine, etc. into desired lengths and add to the bottom of the dreamcatcher.

I had to look it up but I used a lark’s head/cow hitch type knot to secure the ribbon to the wreath.

Last step! I simply glued on some fall florals.

Ta-da!

It’s gorgeous! And lightweight but a nice BIG size! I am in love! Looks beautiful on a wall…

…and makes for a gorgeous and unique door wreath!!!

Springtime in Paris vignette {Enter to win a trip to Paris!}

#springtimeinparis #michaelsmakers @diyshowoff

I sure wish it was springtime in western PA but until that day arrives (hopefully sometime in the very near future), I’m enjoying the Michael’s Makers March challenge: “Springtime in Paris”. I paired pretty French script pillows with a pretty DIY springtime arrangement in a decoupaged French script vase with matching frame to bring a little “Springtime in Paris” to our home.

Supplies:

  • tin vase
  • decoupage
  • French printed tissue paper
  • foam paint brush

How to:

Working in sections. Brush on a coat of decoupage.

decoupage vase @diyshowoff #SpringTimeinParis #michaelsmakers

Due to the shape of my tin vase, I applied strips of tissue paper in layers.

decoupage vase @diyshowoff #SpringTimeinParis #michaelsmakers

Apply one strip to the wet decoupage, smoothing out the wrinkles (carefully to avoid tearing the tissue paper) then move on to the next section and repeat.   decoupage vase @diyshowoff #SpringTimeinParis #michaelsmakers decoupage vase @diyshowoff #SpringTimeinParis #michaelsmakers

Once the entire vase is covered, brush on another coat of decoupage. You can repeat and add more decoupage layers if you want. The more layers, the better protection.

decoupage vase @diyshowoff #SpringTimeinParis #michaelsmakers decoupage vase @diyshowoff #SpringTimeinParis #michaelsmakers

Let dry. The metallic sheen shines through. Love that happy surprise!

decoupage vase @diyshowoff #SpringTimeinParis #michaelsmakers

Now arrange your favorite spring time florals. I love this collection of faux teals, oranges and purples with greenery.

Gorgeous! Spring is right around the corner!

decoupage vase @diyshowoff #SpringTimeinParis #michaelsmakers

I added a bit of tissue paper and French language flash card to a frame {le jardin = garden}, some things from around the house and pillows (also available at Michael’s) to complete my Springtime in Paris vignette.

Wall Mounted Lantern Hanger

As a member of the Lowe’s Creative Ideas team, I participate in monthly DIY challenges. The challenge I chose for July is DIY decor with a DIY wall mounted lantern hanger.

DIY wall mounted hanging lantern tutorial at diyshowoff.com

Materials I used:

wall mounted hanging lantern materials

Wall Mounted Lantern Hanger supplies

Here’s what I did:

1. Stain the wood plank by brushing stain on in the direction of the wood grain, let sit a few minutes and wipe away (same direction) with clean rags. Let dry one hour.

2. Apply a coat or two of polyurethane and let dry. It goes on with a milky look but dries transparent.

DIY wall mounted hanging lantern tutorial at diyshowoff.com

3. Attach hanging hardware to the back. I did two; one on each end.

DIY wall mounted hanging lantern tutorial at diyshowoff.com

4. Flip to the front stained side and attach the curtain rod brackets using 1/4″ screws (the screws that come with the brackets will be too deep). I measured and marked the center bracket first then measured the center from the edge to the center bracket on each side for the other two ‘hooks’.

5. Adjust the brackets to fit the depth of hanging a lantern on the hook.

6. Hang or secure to the wall.

7. Hang lanterns. Add candles, use as mini display cases to showcase your favorite small decorative items or use lanterns as mini-greenhouses for succulents or small plants.

Easy DIY Indoor Outdoor Honeycomb Wall Art

As a member of the Lowe’s Creative Ideas team, I have the opportunity to participate in monthly DIY challenges. One of the themes for April is outdoor wall art. I just happen to have a bare outdoor wall. This easy DIY indoor/outdoor honeycomb wall art project is super easy and perfect for decorating an outdoor wall in our covered party patio area.

easy DIY hexagon wall art at diyshowoff.com

 Materials I used:

hexagon wall art tutorial at diyshowoff.com

What I did:

I spray painted the pieces of the drawer organizers (not assembled) using Valspar Outdoor Spray Paint. I sprayed one side Peacock Blue and let dry about 6 hours then flipped and sprayed the other side Koi Pond and let dry overnight.

Once the paint was dry, I assembled my pieces. The honeycomb-shaped organizers simply snap together. No tools required!

easy honeycomb wall art tutorial

Since I have 3 sets, I assembled two sets with closed ends and one with open ends (both options shown on pamphlet with instructions included in the box).

You could even leave them white = the only DIY is snapping them together! I hung mine using Command outdoor light clips.

From above:

They’re very light weight so not ideal for displaying heavy items but a great way to add color, dimension and interest to an otherwise plain outdoor or even indoor wall. I tucked in a few succulents for now.

My covered patio area still hasn’t been cleaned up for summer. I just grabbed some accessories for photo-staging. Pardon the leaves and dirt!

The outdoor hexagon/honeycomb wall art is going to look great on that back wall when the patio is cleaned up. See the patio when it IS ready for summer lounging and entertaining here.

Eclectic Guest Bedroom Ideas

When I shared our family room and kitchen in the What’s Your Style Series, one style those rooms (and all rooms in my home) share is “eclectic”.

Visiting from the beautiful bedroom at Shabby Love? Welcome, friends!

When you do what you love, specifically on a small budget; thrift stores, flea markets, estate sales, yard sales and Craigs List become favorite sources for unique, eclectic decor. Our guest bedroom is no exception.

I’m in the process of planning a re-do on our other guest room/dressing room. Our master bedroom is a disaster since the day we moved in but always seems to get pushed further down the priority list. What’s your style and favorite bedroom in your home?

DIY Holiday Home Decor: Mirror Makeover

Give an existing mirror a new look for the holidays with a simple makeover and a frosted technique is perfect! The look without the shivers and frozen toes.

DIYShowOff frosted mirror tutorial

Materials:

  • Framed mirror
  • FrogTape®
  • Frosted Glass Spray Paint
  • Vinyl Decal

What I did: (pardon for the poor quality tutorial photos – this was something I worked on in the evening for a party the next day!)

Using FrogTape, I taped off the beveled edge of the mirror. I also liked the mirror’s metallic frame so I taped that off too. Using my thumbnail, I burnished the edge of the tape so that I’d have a crisp clean spray paint line.

FrogTape mirror

Apply a vinyl decal. I used a deer head I created using my Silhouette Cameo. You can use stickers or create your own decal from adhesive vinyl. If you’re artistic, try lining up strips of FrogTape, sketching your own design to cut out and apply to the mirror.

mirror makeover

Spray one coat for a light frosted finish, more for a more solid frosting. I went with one light coat.

I can use it from fall, Thanksgiving, winter and Christmas or even display it all year long. Wouldn’t a monogram be lovely?

Transforming Home Decor

Who doesn’t love the power of paint? Need a quick change in your existing decor? Pick out a decorative accent and give it a coat of spray paint for a fresh new look.

This deer head was pretty and shiny in silver but I wanted a more custom look: oil rubbed bronze with gold antlers to be exact.

Using FrogTape®, I taped off the deer’s head then gave the antlers a quick coat of gold spray paint.

I removed the FrogTape and did two coats of oil rubbed bronze on the deer head without taping…so it could fade up into the gold.

DIY Alphabet Burlap Cork Board Message Center

Hello DIY friends! One of my favorite stores is Michaels – although it’s one of those stores that I can’t run in for just one thing because I end up with a cart full of the cutest decorative accents and more materials for my craft stash. You too, right? Well, Michaels just announced the addition of pre-cut craft fabric to the thousands of creative products available in its stores, providing us with one-stop shopping for DIY projects. This is BIG HUGE news when you live in a smaller city with only one local fabric store! While I was there, I also discovered that Michaels sells a complete line of sewing supplies as well…this cuts my shopping time in half. One store instead of two. Bonus!

DIY burlap message center

Michaels supplied me with this awesome stash of fabric as a part of a promotion for their new line of home decor fabric. Isn’t it darling?

Michaels fabric line

The alphabet burlap is ADORABLE! and a perfect match for my craft room so I decided I would make myself a burlap covered corkboard message center to help keep me organized. Cork board, Chalk board, Clip board AND burlap? That’s what I’m talking about! A fun combo!

Materials:

  • 36″ x 24″ framed corkboard
  • Crafty Cuts alphabet burlap
  • 4 pieces of thin wood trim (Michael’s also sells a small miter box & saw)
  • Black spray paint (or you could probably get away with one can of chalkboard spray paint)
  • Spray adhesive
  • 3 clipboards
  • Chalkboard spray paint
  • Hot glue (and hot glue gun)
  • Embellishments
  • Push pins

Corkboard/Chalkboad/Clipboard Message Center Tutorial:

DIY message center

1. Measure and (miter) cut small trim pieces to fit inside of the corkboard’s frame.

DIY burlap covered cork board

2. Iron burlap. I used my iron’s highest setting and sprayed water (not steamed) to get out wrinkles. Iron both sides.

ironing burlap

3. Measure inside of corkboard frame and cut a piece of the burlap to those measurements (mine was 34.5″ x 22.5″). If you subtract 1/4″, it will save you from having to trim the fit later. If it’s a smidge small, it’s okay (and actually better) and will be hidden by the added wood trim later. Set fabric piece aside.

alphabet burlap

4. Spray paint the corkboard frame and trim pieces black. I was okay with imperfect coverage for a distressed look. (You could also sand edges when dry.) No need to tape the corkboard since it’ll be covered later. Let paint dry.

DIY burlap corkboard message center

5. Give the cut burlap piece a coat of spray adhesive on the back side.  (I do this outside because of the overspray but be mindful of the wind direction blowing the adhesive spray mist as well as when picking up the sticky burlap, not to touch/fold which mine did but easily quickly pulled apart.) Immediately move to step 6.

DIY burlap covered cork board message center

6. Working from the middle out, smooth the burlap over the corkboard (inside the frame). It’ll be reposition-able right away if needed.

DIY burlap covered cork board

7. Next I used hot glue to attach my small mitered trim pieces over the burlap edges, right next to the inside of the corkboard frame. This covers the edge of the burlap.

DIY burlap covered cork board

If you need to re-cut a mitered piece or accidentally scratch the black paint finish, simply fix it with a black Sharpie.

DIY burlap covered cork message center

8. Embellish as desired. My mitered edges surprisingly were a great fit after the mitered cut fix above, but these adorable flower embellishments attached with hot glue would work for covering a not so professional {tricky cuts!} mitered fit too.

flower embellishments

9. Clipboards: Remove metal clip hardware, coat with chalkboard paint, let dry and repeat a second coat and let dry.

chalkboard clipboard

10. Season chalkboard by rubbing the length of a piece of chalk over the complete surface then erasing.

seasoning chalkboard

11. Re-attach clips. I found that using a twist tie to hold the clip open then lining up screws made reattaching the clip to the board a lot easier (because of the spring in the clip). Once screws are in place and tightened, remove twist tie.

reattaching clipboard hardware

12. Embellish chalkboard clipboards if desired. I numbered mine and added some cute stickers.

decorating chalkboard clipboard

13. Hang! Corkboard should come with hanging hardware but large Command strips will work too.

alphabet burlap message center

It’s perfect for my black, natural, vintage inspired craft room. Lovin’ it!

craft room

There’s a lot of “stuff” in this room but it is clean and organized!

craft room / home office

I was provided with fabric and a Michaels gift card to complete the challenge. Michaels.com and Michaels Pinterest Boards feature project ideas that use fabric, including throw pillowslamp shadeschair seat covers, and bracelets. Laminated burlap, a Michaels limited exclusive, can be fed through most home printers to add personalized messages and images to fabric projects…I want to try that next!

Fun Fab Finds

There’s nothing I love more than adding unexpected fun character to a room. My favorite part about room makeovers is shopping for and adding the decorative elements.

Kelly at Live.Laugh.Rowe always has the cutest projects and this past week was no exception when Kelly shared her painted drop cloth soap wraps. Counting down the days to filling stockings? This is a sweet idea!

So, big round of applause for these talented ladies! Better than applause, they’d love for you to stop by and leave a comment on original posts and pin from there! And I’d feature every link if I could but since that would be the longest blog post in history, visit last week’s DIY Project Parade to see so much more inspiring creative DIY. And if you were featured, don’t forget to grab your button. 🙂

Have I told you lately how much I love it when you stop by? With traveling to the apartment for renovating, I feel like I miss so much…not being able to sit in front of the computer. I can’t wait to be done and take a few days to get caught up. Thanks for showing up today and showing off your DIY. I hope to see you again at the DIY Project Parade!

DIY Signs and a girls’ DIY day…

Distressed Wood Sign Tutorial

One busy day last week, when I wasn’t renovating an apartment, Bri and her friends {Amber and Megan} joined me for a morning of thrifting and in the afternoon while I was working on a wood plank DIY project {can’t wait to show you!}, they scooped up the wood scraps and created personalized signs. They did also give me a hand on a couple of projects I was working on so a barter of wood scraps for a little creativity was the perfect “thank you”. It was a super fun and productive day! Here is a tutorial for creating a DIY wood plank sign by Megan, Amber & Bri:

They each grabbed a board, my Dremel Multi-Max and sanded the edges. These girls are DIY divas! Affiliate link: Dremel 6300-05 120-Volt Multi-Max Oscillating Kit

Each girl chose a quote (or in Amber’s case the name of her upcoming Etsy shop – exciting and I’ll share more when she’s ready) and I used my Silhouette Cameo to create and cut out vinyl stencils. Affiliate link: Silhouette Cameo Starter Kit Bundle Cutter

They each went for a classic distressed/antiqued look.

Bri chose a dry brush technique with black and a brown glaze.

Amber chose to distress with a stain.

Megan did a white wash (dry brush technique) with a brown glaze.

Silhouette vinyl was used as a stencil and applied to the painted/glazed boards once they were dry…

The vinyl was rubbed down with a plastic card to secure the vinyl to the board.

They each painted the letters for their quotes using craft paint…

and promptly removed the stencil.

It didn’t take long for their signs to dry. I love them all lined up. They look awesome!

And they each took home a sign to display in their homes…

So easy. So pretty! (the signs are cute too! lol!)

Have an amazing weekend! I’ve been working on details to help out with a family reunion for Saturday so I won’t be around but hope to see you Sunday at the DIY Project Parade!
