DIY Halloween Vignette

Decorating for Halloween? I’m not much of a Halloween decorator but I do have friends with October birthdays and these make a great gifts!

EASY Halloween Wall Art

DIY Halloween decor @diyshowoffYou’ll need these items from the craft store:

  • stretched burlap
  • felt placemat
  • felt decor
  • glue dots (or recommended: hot glue)

Using lots and lots of glue dots or hot glue, layer and secure the felt placemat onto the stretched burlap canvas (glue dots = temporary and using stretched burlap for another project in the future, hot glue = more permanent). Then secure the felt decoration on top of the felt placemat. It doesn’t get much easier than that!

DIY Duck Tape Halloween Trick or Treat Bucket tutorial

Supplies I used:

DuckTape Trick or Treat bucket tutorial @diyshowoff #halloween

  • poster board or light weight card board
  • duct tape – fun check out the Halloween patterns
  • OR…I realized after the fact that the shape resembles a coffee can or paint can (and would provide more durability). This is a fun craft idea but GO grab some fun patterned DuckTape from Michaels and a clean empty paint can from the hardware store!

Tools/extras: cutting matt, Xacto knife/box cutter, scissors, plate

What I did: (this is what I did, but see note & recommendation under “supplies” above!)

DuckTape trick or treat bucket tutorial #halloween @diyshowoff #spookduckular

1. Decide depth/height of bucket and cut a strip the length of poster board.

DuckTape Trick or Treat bucket tutorial @diyshowoff #halloween

2. Place and overlap strips of duct tape to cover each side of the poster board.

DuckTape Trick or Treat bucket tutorial @diyshowoff #halloween

3. I folded over a ‘border’ at the top and bottom.

DuckTape Trick or Treat bucket tutorial @diyshowoff #halloween

4. Trim short sides. Set aside.

DuckTape Trick or Treat bucket tutorial @diyshowoff #halloween

5. I used a salad plate for the size of my bucket. Cut a square of poster board just large enough for tracing the plate. Place and overlap strips of duct tape to each side.

DuckTape Trick or Treat bucket tutorial @diyshowoff #halloween

6. Trace plate and cut out circle. This is the bottom of the bucket.

DuckTape Trick or Treat bucket tutorial @diyshowoff #halloween

7. Using small pieces of duct tape, attach sides to the bottom.

DuckTape Trick or Treat bucket tutorial @diyshowoff #halloweenDuckTape Trick or Treat bucket tutorial @diyshowoff #halloween

8. Use a strip of duct tape to ‘close’ the open side of the bucket. Cover with coordinating duct tape to camouflage seam if you wish.

DuckTape Trick or Treat bucket tutorial @diyshowoff #halloween

9. Reinforce bottom with more strips of duct tape.

DuckTape Trick or Treat bucket tutorial @diyshowoff #halloween

10. Create an embellishment/sticker by overlapping duct tape, placing directly onto cutting matt. Cut out shape, etc. using an Xacto knife. Transfer to front of the bucket.

11. Handle is a strip of duct tape folded into thirds and secured with…more duct tape.

Ta-da! That was fun!

Get creative! Make more than one! My second one is a cute bat with googly eyes and wings. I love the interior Duck Tape design too. Next up on my DIY list is a monster design. So fun!

DIY Baby Farmer Costume

Michaels Makers October challenge is DIY Halloween costume.

DIY Halloween Costume Challenge #michaelsmakers

So fun! Someone in our family is celebrating a first Halloween this year. But babies aren’t too interested in Halloween or costumes so I love that this costume really is super easy to throw together with an existing pair of overalls, and flannel or plaid shirt.

Grab a few props from Michaels and you have a perfect harvest/farm fresh themed photo opportunity for this time of year, a few decorative items to re-use and a comfortable baby ready for that Halloween party.

DIY Lightning Bug Dog Costume

DIY Halloween Costume Challenge #michaelsmakers

The Michaels’ Makers October challenge is ‘Halloween costume’. How fun! I received a gift card to create a cute lightning bug costume for my love bug, Rosie, our Italian greyhound.

lightning bug halloween dog costume tutorial at diyshowoff #michaelsmakers

This will only fit small super skinny dogs. Rosie weighs in at 10 lbs. Alter the design to fit your dog’s size – sleeves of an old black t-shirt? Or sewing two stretchy/knit bands that fit your dog snug but comfortably.

Materials I used:

Michaels.com: Your 24-hour Arts & Crafts Store

What I did:

Cut the ends off of each sock.

lightning bug halloween dog costume tutorial at diyshowoff

Fold adhesive felt in half and cut out a set of wings. (I drew out a few shapes to practice/choose a shape that I liked best). Remove backing, place onto black felt and cut around the ‘wings’. This gives the wings a little more sturdiness.

lightning bug halloween dog costume tutorial at diyshowoff

Cover light with black tape.

lightning bug halloween dog costume tutorial at diyshowoff

One of the socks will go around the neck. Poke the end of a pipe cleaner into the sock, fold pipe cleaner in half. Twist the base and curl the ends.

lightning bug halloween dog costume tutorial at diyshowoff

Towards the other end of the length of the sock, cut a small hole using a pair of scissors. That hole will allow a felt patch with velcro to show through for securing the wings.

lightning bug halloween dog costume tutorial at diyshowoff

Attach a piece of velcro to the under side of the wings.

lightning bug halloween dog costume tutorial at diyshowoff

I added a piece of velcro to the back of the light and cut a small hole in one end of the second sock.

lightning bug halloween dog costume tutorial at diyshowoff

Cut rectangles from remaining felt. Attach a 3″ strip of velcro to each square of felt (velcro opposite of that used on the wings and light).

lightning bug halloween dog costume tutorial at diyshowoff

Dress the dog! One sock around her neck (this fits my dog comfortably). The other sock fits around her waist area, below her rib cage.

Once the socks were on my dog, I tucked the felt square into each sock with the velcro side facing the small holes. Attach wings and light, velcro side down to velcro showing through the small hole.

She’s more interested in being a cuddle bug than being a lightning bug Halloween costume model.

lightning bug halloween dog costume tutorial at diyshowoff #michaelsmakerslightning bug halloween dog costume tutorial at diyshowoff #michaelsmakers

Isn’t she the cutest lightning bug ever?

Do you dress your pets for Halloween? Do they tolerate it? Act a bit embarrassed (like Rosie)? Roll around or proudly show off?

*Note: Please take your own dog’s temperament, personality into consideration and make your pet’s safety your priority.
