Project Diary #11 – Living Room Before & After

I know. I know! It’s about time I checked in with progress. It has been slow moving given it’s been just about exactly one year since we closed on this studio space. And it’s still a work in progress, especially upstairs in the apartment area but the commercial office/studio space on the main floor has just a few finishing touches left and I can call it done! Today, I just couldn’t help but share the living room transformation!

And this isn’t the true true reveal with amazing photography using my good camera but I have been wanting to get something posted so I figured I’d upload some photos of how it’s changing with the living room and how it looks compared to when I bought the place to how we’re enjoying it today. The workshop transformation, main bathroom updates and some holiday decorating coming in the following days. Stay tuned!

Okay, let’s get started!

I call this the living room. It’s where small gatherings, iTOVI scans, Aroma Freedom Technique sessions and one-on-one meetings are held. I’m including the before photos so you can get an idea of what has changed. Really, not too much in the way of DIY – paint and some new furnishings and decor make a huge difference. I worked in a few furniture and decorative items left by previous owner with the new and thrifted purchases. I love the eclectic mix.

Before this, this room was used as a waiting area for the law office by previous owner. Blue paint, library shelves and sparse on the furniture.

There was a reception type desk in this area as well.

Really all that this room needed was updated paint and still could use a whole lotta caulk. Someday I’ll refinish the original pine floors and perhaps swap out the ceiling light fixture and see about getting the fireplace working. But the power of paint is one of my favorite DIY tools to a beautiful transformation.

I love the the built-in bookcases for displaying products and organizing supplies in baskets.

And the fireplace! Isn’t it gorgeous? Painting above the fireplace was the previous owners. I’ve incorporated a few of the things left behind. I love it!

So, what do you think? Isn’t it cute? So cozy and comfy. C’mon over and we’ll catch up over a glass of wine! I could spend so much time curled up on that couch!

Next up:

The workshop transformation. It’s my favorite!

The building has so much historical charm. It’s about one block from our town’s Main Street. The bus stop is literally steps away. There’s a Bed & Breakfast across the street and an antique shop nearby. There are breweries, the YMCA, shops, restaurants, salons, florists, candy/coffee shop, holiday parades and festivals within walking distance. So fun! If renovation from blah to ahhhhh is your thing, stay tuned!

So subscribe and be reminded of updates as the renovations progress! I’ll share before and after photos, projects underway and updates, plans and design boards, sources and links as they relate as well as fun events going on in and around the downtown area. I’ll be using a specific hashtag on social media to keep things all neat and tidy and organized.

Mancave – basement Flooring (Part 2)

Last week I shared the beginnings of a basement makeover with major clean up, a wall removed, fresh new paint (Mancave in Progress – Part 1) and today…you guys! I’m so excited to show you the floor! Hurray! One step closer to completion!

basement // mancave makeover #shawstyleboard

My contacts from A&S Carpet are Jeff and Frank and Frank stopped by to check out the area and do some measurements and since it’s a basement space, gave us some product recommendations.

basement // mancave makeover

After looking at TONS of samples, we fell in love with a hardwood called Maverick from Shaw Floors. We love the color, the rustic design, how it looked next to the slate tile on the stairs, the durability and the distressing. It would have been love at first sight for you too. Not too dark, not too light. Lots of character!

basement // mancave makeover #shawstyleboard

Pretty detail!!! basement // mancave makeover #shawstyleboard

And the professional hardwood floor team A&S sent over had it installed in just a few short hours! There’s something about watching professionals … they make it look so easy.  basement // mancave makeover #shawstyleboard basement // mancave makeover #shawstyleboard basement // mancave makeover #shawstyleboard

Tim has installed over a million square feet of flooring!  basement // mancave makeover #shawstyleboard

Maverick is a 7″ ply-core engineered Hickory with a pretty texture unlike any other product in the Shaw Hardwood Collection. It showcases a timeworn rustic distressed look with circular saw marks randomly peppered throughout the design. It gives the appearance of reclaimed old flooring in a wider width.

See that random light piece in the middle? basement // mancave makeover #shawstyleboard Shaw Maverick Leather

I loved that light piece and anticipated random light pieces throughout the design. However, when that didn’t seem to be the case, I requested it be removed. Thankfully the glue hadn’t completely dried and the guys got it swapped out.  basement // mancave makeover #shawstyleboard Shaw Maverick Leather basement // mancave makeover #shawstyleboard Shaw Maverick Leather basement // mancave makeover #shawstyleboard Shaw Maverick Leather basement // mancave makeover #shawstyleboard Shaw Maverick Leather basement // mancave makeover #shawstyleboard Shaw Maverick Leather basement // mancave makeover #shawstyleboard Shaw Maverick Leather basement // mancave makeover #shawstyleboard Shaw Maverick Leather

We went with the color “leather”.

Isn’t it pretty? Isn’t the distressing awesome?

Since this will be a space for entertaining and play, it’s a great durable option!  What do you think?

Do you have a finished basement? Is it a mancave type space? What type of flooring did you choose?

Mancave in Progress (Part 1)

We have a mancave makeover in progress! Hurray!!!

basement // mancave makeover #shawstyleboard

Well, to be precise…we’ve never had a mancave in our home so we’re doing a basement makeover and creating a mancave for Russ. When it comes to our home, my husband has pretty much given me free reign to DIY, design and decorate as I please. We call it my life sized doll house. As you know, it’s kind of my thing, what I love to do and it’s still a work in progress with lots to be done but last summer, we started cleaning out the basement and it was time to start planning a space just for him. 500+ square feet all dedicated to him, his hobbies and his likes. He’s a home brewer so the mancave will include a bar for entertaining and because he enjoys football season, a living room area with enormous television…I’d call that a mancave, right?

I want him to make the decisions on this space but I appreciate that he includes me in his decision making and asks my opinion. See my Pinterest Board of Mancave Inspiration here

Our basement is two parts. 1 part old 1927 below the original house with ceilings so low he has to duck his head and 1 part newer addition – we’re guessing sometime in the early 1990s. The overflowing storage of junk had reached our puke point. We had a yard sale last summer. He tore down a wall that separated the space. Here are some before photos when the wall was removed and the junk was heading out the door…

basement // mancave makeover basement // mancave makeover basement // mancave makeover #shawstyleboard Shaw Maverick Leather

We’ve been here going on 12 years and never really did anything with the space other than he ripped up some nasty carpet when we moved in and we did have a wood burner for a while before insulating our home and new windows. But mostly, it just sat collecting junk, dirt and dust. It often also served as a workshop for DIY projects upstairs so lots of sawdust too!

basement // mancave makeover #shawstyleboard basement // mancave makeover #shawstyleboard basement // mancave makeover #shawstyleboard

The duct work that sits head-hitting low for his 6’3″ height will be encased in cabinetry. More details on why coming up later!

basement // mancave makeover #shawstyleboard basement // mancave makeover #shawstyleboard basement // mancave makeover #shawstyleboard

Once we got it empty, he patched, primed and painted walls.

basement // mancave makeover #shawstyleboard basement // mancave makeover #shawstyleboard basement // mancave makeover #shawstyleboard basement // mancave makeover #shawstyleboard basement // mancave makeover #shawstyleboard basement // mancave makeover #shawstyleboard basement // mancave makeover #shawstyleboard basement // mancave makeover #shawstyleboard basement // mancave makeover #shawstyleboard basement // mancave makeover #shawstyleboard

He really liked the sage green walls we used to have in our kitchen and I really like gray so we decided on a gray-green. He used Benjamin Moore Aura paint color matched  – Sherwin Williams Comfort Gray.

basement // mancave makeover #shawstyleboard basement // mancave makeover #shawstyleboard basement // mancave makeover #shawstyleboard basement // mancave makeover #shawstyleboard basement // mancave makeover #shawstyleboard basement // mancave makeover #shawstyleboard

Then we started the search for flooring. We had our local Shaw Floors dealer stop by to determine which floor covering suited our space best. Frank from our local Shaw dealer, A&S Carpet recommended engineered hardwood for our basement.

Stay tuned for Part 2 for what we chose and installation!

Project Diary Entry #3 Color Passive Paint

There’s more progress on the studio and the #helloredreno series. I need to get you caught up. I am a big lover of the power of paint. It’s such a game changer and a budget friendly one at that! There are so many possibilities. Dark and moody, fun and colorful, light and airy, neutral and soothing. Do you gravitate towards specific colors?

library/meeting room before…

So this room. Oy. The color. Yikes. A bit on the aggressive side if you ask me. lol

blue room

Blue is one of my favorite colors but this shade is just so very…smurf-y. It’s just not my style. blue wall

Perhaps that’s why this color called “Passive”, a pretty and neutral shade of gray from {HGTV} Sherwin Williams jumped out at me. I have painted walls in bright shades in the past and I’m a fan of accent walls, but for the most part, I prefer a neutral wall shade.

Sherwin Williams Passive Paint Color

Because I like to decorate and redecorate so often. I’ve learned that I prefer a neutral back drop so that as my style changes or evolves, I can easily swap out decor and color schemes to fit my fickle choices. HGTV Home Sherwin Williams Passive

It’s gonna take two coats to cover all of the blue but I’m already feeling soothed!

paint in progress wall paint

I even put up a few accessories previous owners left behind and what was in my car to help get an idea. Final thoughts? It’s definitely the right color for me. What a difference, right?

So pretty! Ugh, this last photo shows just how much work there is to do! I spy a lot of caulking in my near future. And book donating! Stay tuned for a design board and more progress. Follow #helloredreno

Project Diary Entry #1 – Hello Red Reno!

Project Diary Entry #1 – Hello Red Reno!

A couple of months ago I shared that I’m the proud new owner of this charming property…

DIY craft studio // workshop - before room makeover @diyshowoff

I love it. Just looking at that cute exterior makes my heart beat faster. I still can’t believe it’s all mine!

I decided that rather than post JUST before pictures and hold off for the after until all projects were complete, that I’d begin posting more here at DIYShowOff more often –  sharing a series of updates in real time, as projects are started or in progress, ideas and plans and thoughts. This post serves as the introduction to the series. #1 – the before as I walked in the door the first time as the new owner.

So join me on this tour of the first floor. The before photos:

The entry way…

DIY craft studio // workshop - before room makeover @diyshowoff

It’s going to get a little cleaning up. The original pine hardwood floors stay. Isn’t that walnut banister and railing gorgeous? Oh! And lucky me, that’s wallpaper. Several layers. Topped with paint. Lovely. lol I’ll share more about the plan for each individual space in the near future. But can you see the potential?   DIY craft studio // workshop - before room makeover @diyshowoff

The building is functional but outdated. From what I can tell, the building was built sometime in the late 1890s. For the past 45 years, it served as an attorney’s office. And when I met him? We had so much in common. I could sense HIS sense of pride in the place and his love for it’s character and we just seemed to be on the same frequency right from the start. Ever experience that? I believe that even played a part in his accepting my offer.

This first room was his law library/waiting area…

DIY craft studio // workshop - before room makeover @diyshowoff DIY craft studio // workshop - before room makeover @diyshowoff DIY craft studio // workshop - before room makeover @diyshowoff DIY craft studio // workshop - before room makeover @diyshowoff

This next room, his office:

and a back entryway (other half of the original 1890s kitchen area/back door/hobbit door to the front entry/staircase)…

Now the first floor will be a Connect & Create, Makery + Meeting Space … I’m still pondering the official name. For now I refer to it as “the studio”. It’s small but zoned to accommodate 49 but I feel like that’d be way too sardine-packed tight. For real. That must include the upstairs as well be cause I’ve had nearly 20 people on the first floor and it was jam-packed. For the future, I will limit gatherings to intimate meetings and parties of up to 15-20 people.

The building has so much historical charm. It’s about one block from our town’s Main Street. The bus stop is literally steps away. There are breweries, the YMCA, shops, restaurants, salons, florists, candy/coffee shop, holiday parades and festivals within walking distance. So fun! My dining room has very little natural light. So adding fun colorful elements took it from gloomy to cheerful! Hey, I’m a neutral loving girl too, but I was ready for some fun pops of color in that bland uninspired dining room.

The Plan: (see THIS post for more details)…my design board included a beautiful color combination of navy and chartreuse, blush and gray.

The Challenge: Our dining room is looking kind of stale and uninspired. It’s hard to tell in photos but it needs a paint job pretty bad and well, while I LOVE neutrals too (have I mentioned my design-mutt style?), I am ready to add some color to my neutral base.   It’s usually looking like something along these lines…

#loveyourhomechallenge @diyshowoff dining room #loveyourhomechallenge @diyshowoff dining room #loveyourhomechallenge @diyshowoff dining room

::yawnnnn::

Nice enough. Clean. Bland. It’s time to liven things up with some color, baby!

Before: See the patch work for nail holes, dings, cracks and scratches in the walls below? These walls require some TLC! Since this room doesn’t have direct access to a window (although behind where I’m standing to take the photo is a set of French doors in another small room), there’s little to no natural lighting so it’s important to keep paint options light and bright but oh man, if you know me, I do love being creative so I might have something special planned for that back wall. Watch out! I’m armed with my FrogTape and ready to go!

Color Lovers series! @diyshowoff dining room before

See how dark the room typically is?

Okay friends, so here’s the plan: feel free to tell me your thoughts in the comments. If they’re nice. haha. Just kidding. Constructive criticism welcome!

Walls & ceiling: Freshen up the ceiling and walls. The walls will be neutral and light for the most part (again, those lighting issues) with the exception of maybe something fun on that back wall. The ceiling was actually a lighter shade than the precious taupe-y walls at one point but as you can tell below, definitely not clean crisp white. That’s changing!

Color Lovers series! @diyshowoff dining room before

Sliding door: I still swoon over this door. I’ve considered repainting it for a change /something different but I am still so in LOVE with the chartreuse color so it’s staying! However, I’m adding frosted contact paper to the windows to give the bedroom privacy (there’s currently a dark curtain there…blah). The frosted film will still allow some of that natural lighting to make it’s way into the dark dining room but provide privacy between the rooms.

Color Lovers series! @diyshowoff dining room before

My thoughts on decorating and loving color:  I looooove bringing in color with paint and decorative accents. Why? Mostly because I love to rearrange and redecorate often. I find that keeping the furniture (those big ticket items) neutral allows for adding and changing color schemes whenever the itch to do so hits me. And I get itchy often. Wait. That doesn’t sound so good, does it? lol What I mean is…I find that my reward for ‘cleaning’ is re-arranging and redecorating. It keeps things fresh and motivates me to get the sweeping, dusting, picking up tasks done. So for me personally, change happens often in my home. It makes me happy.

Summary: Paint and decorative accessories are easy to change so do what you love! I’m no stranger to colorful accents. Remember this fun room? Not everyone’s cup of tea but my family room was so colorful-carnival, I couldn’t help but smile in there. Ya know?

family room was once a kaleidoscope of color

Anyway…back to the dining room and adding color there!

Keep: existing handmade barn wood dining room table, built-ins (I’m always tempted to tear those out but…they’re so functional I’d be crazy to do away with them, ya know?) and existing light fixture (still love it so working with it). Those two built-ins are actually a very light shade of blue. I’m ready for them to be white so I never have to paint them again in my lifetime.

Color Lovers series! @diyshowoff dining room before

Built In Cabinets:  I guess previous homeowners had a LOT to display since out of the 4 corners in the dining room, 3 have built-in cabinets. Well, who doesn’t love storage? So they stay. I’ve lived 10 years with being able to see what’s in the built in cabinets and it’s not always pretty. The best of intentions sometimes get out of control. My plan is to hide the contents.  I love this lace pattern privacy window film (affiliate link) on the two matching built-ins for hidden storage. Spray painting hardware.

Design board: I am SO super excited for this fresh colorful update!!!

  • Update the seating. Birch Lane is an affordable shopping destination with classic designs.
  • Add beauty to the walls. Minted has such a beautiful selection of stationery, wall art and fabrics.
  • The Mine has a killer selection of unique fine furnishings for my plan to bring in a few feminine touches and color through decorative home accessories.

I feel it's versatile. I'd have no problem adding in maroon or magenta, teal or turquoise, gold or silver, black or brown or even eggplant...lots of color options for adding colorful seasonal accessories.

Mark your calendar! Stay tuned! On June 27th, stop back to see how a coat of paint, some DIY and a color palette of blush, gray, navy and chartreuse give my tired dining room a bright and colorful new look!

Floorté Vinyl Plank Flooring from Shaw

More progress on the enclosed porch turned room makeover! When I visited Shaw Floors headquarters last summer, I had the opportunity to see all of their amazing high quality flooring products from awesome waterproof carpet to beautiful hardwoods to unbelievable waterproof planks. So much thought and innovation goes into the design behind the scenes!

The many features of a product called Floorté caught my eye.

First, remember the ugly before picture from when we removed exterior siding and turned an exterior-interior window into a doorway…

to the after drywall/trim/paint and light fixture…it’s beginning to look like a different room altogether, right? That’s the plan!

to some floor prep work…

to the installation of the Floorté. I chose the design “Antico” from the Classico collection. It’s a beautiful distressed-inspired look with gray/brown wood tones. I think it resembles weathered wood.

Did you catch the durability demonstration video on Instagram? 😉

Our installer, Mike, subcontractor from A&S, knocked out this installation in half a day!

Next step is for us to install shoe molding and to complete decorating but I couldn’t resist putting up the curtains. I just need to make a few decisions on this room’s purpose then tweak the fine details so more on the final reveal coming soon, but in the meantime – isn’t she lovely?!

Stay tuned for the final before and after room reveal with this gorgeous Floorté flooring!

There’s a Hole in the Wall!

Okay, because I’m a crazy lady, I decided to tackle a room makeover in December. In my defense, it’s just a little room so it shouldn’t disrupt our entire holiday season or anything, right? Right! Well, I’ve always been told “it’s the thought that counts” and I’m going with that thought.

We have this odd enclosed porch area off the open pantry…see that door on the left? open pantry at diyshowoff.com

The one with the curtains? That’s the original front door to this old house. And where does it lead? To a warm and inviting entryway to our house?

No. A homeowner from the past enclosed the porch and rerouted the door to the side. We enter our home through the back French doors on the patio.  We do not have a real front door or curb appeal and that’s a dream for another day but we did recently put in new windows AND insulated the outer walls. And this room reached my puke-point. It looked like a room from an episode of Hoarders. A true junk room. I’m over it. It’s something you don’t see on a blog every day. The ugly truth. Well, enough is enough.

Oh, and that room has this window at the bottom of our stairs in our living room always bothered me. An exterior window INTERIOR? Don’t you just love nearly 100 year old houses? Weird. Oh, “let’s look out this window at the sunny day” … (::cue horror movie music::) … it’s a room piled to the ceiling with JUNK. NO! Just no. Merry Christmas to me because it’s going away!

Did you even notice it had exterior vinyl siding on two walls? Looks like an option for insulation from a past home owner.

Down to the original siding from 1927… but those other walls? Ugh. they’re staying for now.

home office makeover before and in progress @diyshowoff I decided to make that window into an open doorway.

And the siding has been removed and drywall installed. It’s starting to come together. No matter what, anything is better than it was and I’m looking forward to a bright fresh new room.

Those other two crazy walls with planks and hunter green trim overload are too involved to change out now (moving windows and doors to install drywall is more involved than we can deal with at the present time, so fingers crossed that paint tone down that in-yo-face trim circus!

And the floor? That hideous green painted concrete has to go. New product: Floorté, enhanced luxury vinyl plank floor by Shaw and I can’t wait! More on that coming up. Floorté is a luxury line locking durable engineered waterproof PVC flooring option. More on that coming up! For now, there are some decisions to make…

And someday, when a new beautiful front door is in the budget, this room will grow up to be a real live front entryway, a foyer! But for now, I’m claiming this space to create more square footage, to make it useful space. I’m still on the fence about it’s purpose though. I’m leaning towards den/home office.

Stay tuned for more progress!
