Attention, friends! Did you know that Young Living has grown 180% in the past year? Experience for yourself why that is. Read my story here. I was getting so desperate for something, anything. All it took was ‘trying’. And to learn that something natural, something so simple actually works…I’m shocked, stunned, thrilled and so relieved each and every time. Why hadn’t I heard of essential oils before? I wish I had known sooner. I want to make sure you are aware! Reach out with questions and I’ll pass along some info. (roeshel at gmail dot com).

DIY Halloween Witch Hat Candy Dish Decor

This easy DIY Halloween project for the Lowe’s Creative Ideas October challenge has a few uses so I wasn’t sure what to call it. It’s … versatile.

Witch Hat Halloween Candy Dish

DIY Witch Hat candy dish/serving tray tutorial @diyshwoff

or add chips/pretzels to use as a Halloween serving tray.

or add festive cupcakes for Halloween party display.

or add succulents, small fall flowers/plants to create a Halloween planter.

or a floral arrangement (just pop on a fall wreath) for Halloween decor.

or simply flip the bottom to use as a Halloween Centerpiece

Materials:

EASY tutorial:

1. Using a kitchen knife, we cut out a hole using the inner circle shown on the bottom of the large plastic plant saucer as guide.

DIY Witch Hat candy dish/serving tray tutorial @diyshwoff

2. Spray paint cone and saucer black. I did two coats on the cone, one coat on the already black plant saucer. Let dry.

DIY Witch Hat candy dish/serving tray tutorial @diyshwoff

That’s it!

Carefully slide onto the cone. Right side up creates a ‘dish’.

DIY Witch Hat candy dish/serving tray tutorial @diyshwoff DIY Witch Hat candy dish/serving tray tutorial @diyshwoff

Upside down creates a ‘ledge’. Add an old belt for a decorative touch.

More ideas: attach faux fall flowers, leaves, spiders, etc. to create a Halloween centerpiece. Hide a vase filled with water under the cone and fill with tall flowers. Add succulents and display outside. Get creative!

{Healthy} Fall Scents

Do you know what’s better than delicious fall aromas from fall scented candles filled with harmful chemicals? Well, probably baking a pumpkin pie, to be honest. Right?! And also – Young Living essential oils with healthy benefits and amazing fall aromas diffused into the air.

Fall Scents for your home with Essential Oils @diyshowoff

Here is a list of my favorite Young Living essential oil aromatherapy for the fall season (along with some benefits).

Thieves – when someone in our home is coming down with a cold or flu (today it’s Mr. DIY), I diffuse straight Thieves essential oil blend for its cleansing abilities. It’s highly effective in supporting the immune system and good health AND fills my home with the scents of fall. Ingredients include: clove, lemon, cinnamon, eucalyptus radiate and rosemary. Recipe: fill diffuser with distilled water and add 5-8 drops of Thieves.

Pomander Ball –

pomander ball aromatherapy recipe @diyshowoff

Orange essential oil has a rich fruity scent that lifts spirits and provides a calming influence, peace and happiness. Orange essential oil is also rich in the powerful antioxidant d-limonene and aids in maintaining normal cellular regeneration. Clove essential oil has a sweet, spicy stimulating and revitalizing fragrance with immune-enhancing properties. Recipe: fill diffuser with distilled water. Add 5 drops of clove and 3-5 drops of orange essential oil. Don’t have clove essential oil on hand? Try using Thieves with orange essential oil instead.

Autumn Spice – Cinnamon bark essential oil is valued for its ability to improve wellness, promoting healthy cardiovascular and immune functions with a warm, spicy aroma. Nutmeg also has a sweet, warm, spicy scent that I find comforting and energy boosting. Recipe: Fill diffuser with distilled water. Add 3 drops of cinnamon bark essential oil + 5 drops of nutmeg essential oil.

Warm cinnamon bun – Aromatic Recipe: Add 5 drops of Cinnamon Bark and 2 drops of Lemon essential oil to diffuser filled with distilled water. Warning: family may be disappointed there aren’t cinnamon rolls fresh from the oven!

Fall Pot Luck – Get creative! Whip up your own special recipe. Fill diffuser with distilled water and add your own combination. Thieves, Orange, Cinnamon Bark, Nutmeg, Clove, Rosemary, Raven are all perfect for filling your home with the scents of the fall season.

*Like a stronger or weaker scent? Adjust drops to suit your preference accordingly.

Custom DIY Decals – vinyl holiday labels

I don’t know about you but the change from fall to winter contributes to dry skin and having a bottle of lotion constantly on display isn’t exactly decorative so why not whip out a vinyl decal/label using a fun shape and text? I used my Silhouette Cameo and vinyl but you could substitute craft paper, glue, contact paper, decorative tape and/or stickers. It’s a cute DIY gift idea too. Here is what I did:

DIY gift set idea

Materials:

  • Bottle of Moisturizing Lotion (Dollar General) – you could also make your own and use a glass bottle or jar
  • Gold Vinyl from Happy Crafters
  • Transfer paper

Tools:

  • Silhouette Cameo

What I did:

Remove front label. I left the back label adhered so there was no mistaking the contents and ingredients. The front label pulled away clean for me but some may take a little elbow grease.

lotion bottle decal tutorial

Using my Silhouette Studio software along with a previously purchased deer shape and helvetica font, I created a design measuring small enough to fit on the front of the lotion bottle (roughly 3 x 3 inches).

Load vinyl color side up. I changed my blade settings for cutting vinyl and sent to ‘cut’.

cutting vinyl decals

Weed away all ‘negative’ vinyl that isn’t a part of the design.

Add a piece of transfer paper to the front side of the vinyl decal and rub with a gift card or credit card.

Pull away the wax paper backing.

Place the vinyl decal/transfer paper onto the front of the lotion bottle and rub the design with a a gift card.

DIY Vinyl Pumpkin Decals

With the girls all grown up and on their own, I have little desire to carve a pumpkin to create a jack-o-lantern. And my pumpkin carving skills are a bit juvenile so I’m loving this alternative to carving…my pumpkins look so pretty!

DIY vinyl pumpkin decals

Materials:

  • large glossy adhesive vinyl from Happy Crafters
  • transfer paper
  • pumpkins

Tools:

  • Silhouette Cameo

What I did:

1. I purchased a deer silhouette and frame from the online store and sized them in my Silhouette Studio designer software to fit my pumpkins.

DIY vinyl pumpkin decals

2. Then sent my decals to “cut”.

DIY vinyl pumpkin decals

3. Peel away (weed) the negative part of the design.

DIY vinyl pumpkin decals

4. Cut transfer paper to size. Peel away wax paper backing and smooth transfer paper into place.

DIY vinyl pumpkin decals

5. Rub design with a credit card.

DIY vinyl pumpkin decals

6. Peel away paper backing from the vinyl decal, transferring it to the sticky transfer paper.

DIY vinyl pumpkin decals

7. Position on pumpkin and lightly rub decal with a credit card.

DIY vinyl pumpkin decals

8. Peel away transfer paper. This might get a little tricky because of the pumpkin’s uneven surface. You may have to use your fingernail to help with the transfer.

DIY vinyl pumpkin decals

9 .There are also wrinkles in my vinyl decal…but it doesn’t take away from the design. I just smoothed it down the best I could using my fingernail and credit card.

DIY vinyl pumpkin decals

All done and so cute! SO many options. I noticed that the Silhouette America online store even had sets of eyes, noses and mouths for jack-o-lantern faces. A monogram or spooky ghost or black cat would be great too!

Wooden Candy Corn Accents

We’re making progress on the grape arbor/gazebo, recycled brick path and patio AND a laundry room makeover and in between those bigger DIY projects, I’m having fun with some stress-free easy DIY. I just saw the cutest little candy corn bean bags somewhere which inspired this project…a scrap wood version.

DIY Halloween/Fall craft: decorative wooden candy corn pieces

Materials:

  • Scrap 1 x 6 wood
  • FrogTape®
  • Sandpaper
  • Craft paint

I used the miter saw to cut three triangle shapes from my scrap wood, then sanded the edges.

DIY Halloween craft

Candy Corn Fact: My DIY version goes from orange to yellow to white but the official candy corn striping starts with yellow on the bottom, orange in the middle and white on top.

I taped off each section using FrogTape®, rubbing my thumbnail along the edge of the tape. I started at the bottom with orange craft paint. After I applied a second coat, I removed the FrogTape®. Let dry and move on to the middle yellow section following the same steps, finishing with white craft paint on the pointy part of the triangle.  Allow drying time between each color.

Optional: seal with a protective clear coat.

Aren’t they cute?

I think these would make a great fall hostess gift tied up with ribbon.

Fall Chevron DIY

Earlier this week, I shared my fall home tour. Did you happen to see the DIY chevron “Fall in Love” plaque on the mantel in my family room?

colorful fall mantel

Tutorial:

DIY Fall chevron Art

Materials:

  • Scrap wood
  • FrogTape® Chevron Shape Tape
  • Paint (I used glossy Krylon cherry red spray paint, turquoise DecoArt Americana Desert Turquoise acrylic craft paint and a gold spray paint)
  • Fall stencil (I created/cut a fall vinyl stencil using my Silhouette. Leaf damask design from Silhouette America online store.)
  • Martha Stewart Crafts Wood Stain

Here’s what I did:

1. I sanded the edges of my scrap wood (left over from a shelf DIY).

2. I spray painted my wood plaque red and let dry for about an hour.

DIY Fall Art

3. Starting at the top of my plaque, I applied the FrogTape® Chevron Shape Tape. Cut to size, remove half of the wax paper backing, place Shape Tape, remove other half of the wax paper backing and smooth into place.

DIY Fall Art

4. and just kept adding rows by placing the zig zag design exactly as my first piece and just eye-balling the distance. To get a chevron pattern, line up the zig zag.

5. Using my thumbnail, I made sure the edges of the Shape Tape were secure.

6. Then painted my chevron using turquoise craft paint. I did three coats to completely cover the red paint underneath.

DIY Fall Art

Tip: Elevate the wood using the tape container to paint sides.

DIY Fall Art

7. I peeled away the Shape Tape after the third coat of craft paint while the paint was still wet and let it dry.

DIY Fall Art

8. Once dry, I sanded the the entire plaque for a bit of distressing.

DIY Fall chevron Art

9. Then brushed on the wood stain, let it sit for a few minutes then wiped it off for an aged look.

DIY Fall chevron Art

10. Once everything was dry, I applied my vinyl stencil and taped the edges of my wood plaque with FrogTape® Multi-surface.

11. Then spray painted the design using gold spray paint.

12. Remove tape and vinyl stencil.

DIY Fall chevron Art

It perfectly coordinates with my red/aqua fall mantel display…

Falling for Vintage – Fall Home Tour

It may not feel like fall in your neck of the woods but the shorter days, chilly mornings, garden harvests, cooler evenings all point to autumn’s arrival here in western PA which means preparation for the countdown to my hibernation. I’m all set to warm things up with some fall decorating.  Fall is such a blessed time of year and I love being all cozy and comfy and more than any other time of year. Fall decorating helps me with the transition of summer fun to Christmas celebration.

7-Vintage-Fall-House-Tours

Ready for a little touch of vintage in my fall home tour? Let’s take a look around! It is early in the season so I have to tell you things will definitely be tweaked and moved around before I’m completely satisfied with it just in time to pack it all away.

Vintage Fall Home Tour at DIYShowOff

Last week, I kicked off the fall decorating season by adding some new accents atop my vintage chicken coop.

Fall vignette

and a faux wheat stack with my old globe vignette…

autumn vignette

The kitchen is all ready for fall on the top shelf of our open pantry. This pumpkin weighs in at a little over 16 lbs. according to the vintage scale. And a faux fall bouquet in a vintage tin adds more balance.

vintage fall pantry

Our kitchen island consists of an old vintage dresser and the centerpiece is a basket filled with mums, purple cabbages, heather and squash. I added a vintage vice for a rustic touch.

Vintage Fall Decorating/Fall Home Tour at DIYShowOff

On our dining room table, vintage bottles display dried cotton sticks and feathers. The table runner is simply wrapping paper.

More vintage bottles and a cloche update with decoupaged botanical birds. {Decoupage on Glass Tutorial.}

Vintage Fall Home Tour at DIYShowOff

The mantel in our family room is a bit of a challenge with the colorful curtains but gold, red and aqua including a vintage tea tin and blue mason jar paired with coordinating vases create a fun autumn theme.

Even the guest room whispers “welcome fall”…

And because the days are still nice enough to enjoy fresh fall air, I spruced up the patio daybed with new pillows and some pretty mums…displayed in a vintage something or other I confiscated from the barn.

Not only do I love the warmth that accompanies fall decorating, it’s fall scents that set the scene for a warm and cozy home, isn’t it? Pumpkins, cinnamon, wood burning, home cooking.

*This is a sponsored post. Chippmunk provided me with the budget to create a deal utilizing their site. As always, opinions are 100% my own. I wouldn’t share it if I didn’t think you’d like it too.  I’m usually searching for a deal and spend a lot of wasted time clicking on expired coupons. I’ve added Chippmunk to my bookmarks.

What do you think? Pinning? Thanks! Leave a comment and I’ll visit you back!

Easy Fall Decor: Decoupaged Glass Jars and BottlesTutorial

Fall DIY: The mornings have been chilly so there’s no denying that fall is right around the corner and that has me thinking of fall decorating despite the fact that I’m hanging on to every last bit of summer. This year, I have a beautiful fall vignette consisting of vintage inspired bottles filled with feathers, dried cotton stalks, autumn leaves and dried silver dollar plants. The plain bottles could use a little embellishment and Martha Stewart pizzazz.

This post is sponsored by Martha Stewart Crafts/Plaid and BluePrint Social. If you follow DIYShowOff on Instagram, you know I recently received this fun supply in the mail:

I chose to utilize Martha Stewart Decoupage and the cutest botanical birds cutouts for this project.

  • Glass bottles, vases or jars – I recycled some from around the house.
  • Soft bristle paint brush.

Aren’t these awesome?

Silhouette Portrait giveaway @DIYShowOff

What is a Silhouette Portrait?

It’s an electronic cutting tool for personal use, similar to the Cameo but on a smaller scale. It’s like a home printer and it plugs into your computer with a simple USB cable. However, instead of printing it uses a small blade to cut paper, cardstock, vinyl, fabric and more up to 8 inches wide and 10 feet long. The machine also has the ability to register and cut printed materials.

See more details at Silhouette America. I seriously love my Silhouette. I use it all of the time, my favorite being vinyl stencils for DIY signs but for lots of other projects too {my Silhouette projects}.

Thanksgiving decorating {thrift store art print becomes Thanksgiving reminder}…

We don’t host Thanksgiving dinner. We’re lucky to be guests. So, Thanksgiving decor is minimal at the DIY Show Off home but I did want to share how I turned a $4 print called “Nostalgic Autumn” by Eric Sloane into something I love hanging in our home this time of the year. Our thrift stores have huge framed outdated prints in “fair” condition on occasion. It’s not something I’d normally choose, but the the colors and autumn farm theme is perfect for our dining room. I decided that adding the words “Give Thanks” ensures that once a year, I will hang this print. And every time I look at the words “give thanks”, I take a moment to thank God for our many blessings.

Give Thanks vignette

What I did:

easy DIY Thanksgiving wall art

  1. Old framed print {thrift store}. Mine wasn’t in the best of shape. There were scratches on the print, etc. but we embrace imperfection around here, therefore it’s “perfect”. {You may want to check to see if your print has value before altering it.}
  2. Decide where lettering will be placed using a level or ruler.
  3. Apply a piece of FrogTape Delicate Surface. It works on freshly painted surfaces (24 hours) so it’s a good option for sticking lightly to an old art print. I did not rub the tape to adhere since I’m not painting. I’m using it as a guide/straight line.
  4. Write quote or words with chalk or use a stencil.
  5. Go over chalk words with a Sharpie/permanent marker. Be care of smudging with your hand, work from left to right {or I guess if you’re left handed, it might make sense to work from right to left…which ever way your hand won’t smudge the area you’re working on}.
  6. Carefully peel away FrogTape. Continue drawing letters that fall below the level line, wipe away chalk.

I love the every day reminder to “give Thanks”, especially this time of year. What do you think? Have you seen large art prints at the thrift store or yard sales that with a little DIY touch or accent would work for your seasonal decor?

Happy Halloween ~ DIY Fall Festival linky party and Halloween Highlights

Happy Halloween, DIY friends! It’s a day when I miss when my girls were little and I was sewing Halloween costumes and getting the two of them set to head out to trick-or-treating. Now they’re grown up and we live in a location with ZERO trick-or-treat’ers coming to the door…so just another Wed. evening around here {and actually it’s been postponed until Saturday due to rain and heavy winds} but it doesn’t stop me from taking time out to appreciate your Halloween craftiness!

I LOVE the entire Halloween mantel over at Days of Chalk and Chocolate but especially her Halloween glam wreath:

Lynda from Focal Point Styling always does an amazing job at well, “styling’ and seasonal is no exception. Her harvest entry is so warm and welcoming…

She has some more awesome Halloween decorating ideas you’ll want to check out too and I LOVE her steampunk Halloween collection.

Courtney from A Diamond in the Stuff has a GREAT idea for all of that left over Halloween candy (or in my case since we don’t get trick-or-treaters…clearanced Halloween candy!)…Halloween Candy Bark. YUM!
