Silhouette Portrait giveaway @DIYShowOff

What is a Silhouette Portrait?

It’s an electronic cutting tool for personal use, similar to the Cameo but on a smaller scale. It’s like a home printer and it plugs into your computer with a simple USB cable. However, instead of printing it uses a small blade to cut paper, cardstock, vinyl, fabric and more up to 8 inches wide and 10 feet long. The machine also has the ability to register and cut printed materials.

See more details at Silhouette America. I seriously love my Silhouette. I use it all of the time, my favorite being vinyl stencils for DIY signs but for lots of other projects too {my Silhouette projects}.

I’ll be sharing a project and and if you don’t win {winner to be announced first thing Friday} – there will be a special promotional using the code ‘SHOWOFF’ on Black Friday!

Thanksgiving decorating {thrift store art print becomes Thanksgiving reminder}…

We don’t host Thanksgiving dinner. We’re lucky to be guests. So, Thanksgiving decor is minimal at the DIY Show Off home but I did want to share how I turned a $4 print called “Nostalgic Autumn” by Eric Sloane into something I love hanging in our home this time of the year. Our thrift stores have huge framed outdated prints in “fair” condition on occasion. It’s not something I’d normally choose, but the the colors and autumn farm theme is perfect for our dining room. I decided that adding the words “Give Thanks” ensures that once a year, I will hang this print. And every time I look at the words “give thanks”, I take a moment to thank God for our many blessings.

Give Thanks vignette

What I did:

easy DIY Thanksgiving wall art

  1. Old framed print {thrift store}. Mine wasn’t in the best of shape. There were scratches on the print, etc. but we embrace imperfection around here, therefore it’s “perfect”. {You may want to check to see if your print has value before altering it.}
  2. Decide where lettering will be placed using a level or ruler.
  3. Apply a piece of FrogTape Delicate Surface. It works on freshly painted surfaces (24 hours) so it’s a good option for sticking lightly to an old art print. I did not rub the tape to adhere since I’m not painting. I’m using it as a guide/straight line.
  4. Write quote or words with chalk or use a stencil.
  5. Go over chalk words with a Sharpie/permanent marker. Be care of smudging with your hand, work from left to right {or I guess if you’re left handed, it might make sense to work from right to left…which ever way your hand won’t smudge the area you’re working on}.
  6. Carefully peel away FrogTape. Continue drawing letters that fall below the level line, wipe away chalk.

farmhouse Thanksgiving dining room

I love the every day reminder to “give Thanks”, especially this time of year. What do you think? Have you seen large art prints at the thrift store or yard sales that with a little DIY touch or accent would work for your seasonal decor?

Happy Halloween ~ DIY Fall Festival linky party and Halloween Highlights

Happy Halloween, DIY friends! It’s a day when I miss when my girls were little and I was sewing Halloween costumes and getting the two of them set to head out to trick-or-treating. Now they’re grown up and we live in a location with ZERO trick-or-treat’ers coming to the door…so just another Wed. evening around here {and actually it’s been postponed until Saturday due to rain and heavy winds} but it doesn’t stop me from taking time out to appreciate your Halloween craftiness!

I LOVE the entire Halloween mantel over at Days of Chalk and Chocolate but especially her Halloween glam wreath:

Courtney from A Diamond in the Stuff has a GREAT idea for all of that left over Halloween candy (or in my case since we don’t get trick-or-treaters…clearanced Halloween candy!)…Halloween Candy Bark. YUM!

DIY Fall Festival – 12 Natural Fall Decor Craft Highlights & Linky Party

I’ve done absolutely nothing DIY fall related this past week. Life happens. :) But last every week there have been some awesome (you all are SO creative and crafty) fall projects shared. Here is a collection of neutral, natural, burlap fall and Halloween craft projects:

Karah created a pumpkin using palm frond leaves. SO cool! Of course you can use a similar material or … you know where Karah lives {a tropical vacation destination}, visiting her to collect supplies sounds like a better idea. See her leaf pumpkin tutorial at The Space Between.

palm leaf pumpkin

I don’t sympathize with Karah’s lack of craft supplies in the Caribbean. I love that she comes up with creative solutions using what she has on hand (and free), like the pumpkin above and her fun fall leaf wreath

Wait! There’s more. Karah’s fall centerpiece ideas are so inspiring…

Debbie from Confessions of a Plate Addict shared her super cute, super easy DIY Indian corn candle. This is a great last minute project to add in to existing fall decor…

DIY Indian corn candle holder

These girls are so good! Just when I got done visiting one of their links, I move on to the next and it’s them again with another natural fall decorating project! Debbie also shares a tutorial for making this gorgeous dried corn garland – how clever and so fall-festive!

DIY dried corn garland

One thing I’m missing in my decor this year is a fall wreath. I’m so inspired by the neutral natural wreath made with canvas, burlap, dried roses and dried hydrangeas at Craftberry Bush…

dried fall wreath tutorial

Fall means being cozy and all snuggled up. How about some candlelight for added warmth? Love this idea from Doreen at Hymns and Verses: floating candlelit apples…and hey, if you’re hungry but too warm all wrapped up in your cable-knit throw blankie and pj’s, there’s an apple within easy reach. ;)

DIY floating apple candles

Amanda from Small Home Big Start has some awesome & NECESSARY tips for drying acorns for fall decorating and fall crafts (and some acorn projects). Our yard gets filled {you could surf and will down the little downhill slope if you’re not careful. I imagine the squirrels up there snorting with laughter when it happens}. Tips for drying…

tips for drying acorns

All of those dried acorns are perfect for the natural DIY fall project that Laura from Finding Home shares…gold leaf pine cones and acorns (which I think is perfect for fall and Christmas):

Gail from My Repurposed Life dried and dyed her hydrangeas and shares the tutorial on how you can do it too. So pretty!

And since my DIY yarn pumpkins are 50% (materials: yarn + real pinecone stems) I’m including them in the round up too. :)

Countdown to Fall Party!!!

There’s no way to deny that summer is officially over any longer. With shorter days, crisp mornings and cooler evenings, I’ve been wearing sweaters, boots and snuggling under fuzzy throws. We’re still trying to hold off on setting the thermostat to “heat”…it feels too early! But, I’m warming up to the idea of lighting spiced candles and making home more cozy. Once I unburied the dining room this week, I started a little autumn decorating {it’s the only room I really decorate for fall}

autumn mantle

I am so excited to be hosting the Countdown to Fall linky party today! It’s my turn! I’m having so much fun joining my friends from Domestically SpeakingSand & Sisal and It’s So Very Cheri as we celebrate all things fall! {See their projects at the bottom of this post.} And I took a little break from apartment renovating and decorating. I even cleaned up my dining room for your visit today. Welcome! Well, at least what shows in the pictures. Shhh – Don’t tell.

Countdown to Fall linky party

I was ready to add some rich color to our dining room for the autumn season. So I started with painting a fall leaf onto an old cork board. It still has the pin marks and scars from previous hanging. Anyone else find imperfection charming? Now it’s dark teal, rich red with coppers and golds…”warmth”.

red and teal fall mantle

Obviously I’m not an artist. DIY skills and creativity do not = artistic talent for me. Mr. DIY loves the “lion fish” I painted. What?! Okay, I have to agree that as a leaf, it’s a little sad and after a Google image inquiry, it does sort of resemble a lion fish.

my leaf painting…

teal red fall mantle

lion fish…

red lion fish

But, you know what? We embrace imperfection around here and I love the colors. Besides…it’s art. Unique. One of a kind. It’s precious, right? {you can lie if you feel you need to answer that. lol!} I guarantee no one else has a painting of a leaf from a lion fish tree…I like being different. :)

red teal fall mantle

I’m still playing with it all and next week, you can bet it will all look different but the colors, the theme and that lion fish leaf painting are staying. I do love to rearrange though.

red teal fall decorating

Don’t these colors look amazing together?

red teal orange fall mantel

Materials: “etc.” was a clearance Target find earlier this year, the red and aqua vases are from JoAnns, the orange silk Chinese lanterns in the aqua vase were from Michael’s a few years ago, the silver dollar branches in the red vase are from our yard, the old turquoise insulator turned votive holder is a thrifted treasure, the mini chalkboard is a Shaw Floors/HGTV Home design challenge souvenir, the metallic faux pumpkins are from my long time fall collection.

Still loving my pallet insert for our faux fireplace too…

fall decorating

This week, I took a little break from apartment renovation part 1249 to start to decorate for fall. I only decorate the dining room for fall. My DIY yarn pumpkins look so pretty on these candle pedestals. I love mixing a little aqua/teal with traditional autumn colors of golds, oranges, reds, browns…

I’m still working on a fall centerpiece, but these accents I already had on hand {vintage tin, dried flowers, candles, oval wooden tray} do the trick for now…

I’m not a fan of our current dining room light fixture, so you’ll often find me disguising it with wreaths, garland and candles. So festive and so pretty…

DIY Project Parade ~ Dinner Party Details and Silhouette Cameo Review

It’s party time!  My baby girl’s birthday is tomorrow.

I don’t know how this little girl…
became this young lady so fast…
{Happy Birthday, honey…love you!}
All I did was blink.

Can I get a
(x) A hug
(x) A tissue

My family gets together for birthdays and she’s requested that I cook. If you know me, you know that Mr. DIY is the chef around here (but I do know how to cook, I just resign because he enjoys it so much – who am I to argue?) and since she’s moved out, home cooked meals are few and far between. At her pleading, I’m making a salsa chicken soup.  I tweak this recipe a little. I set the table with fresh bread, shredded cheese, avocado strips, sour cream and Goldfish crackers. And since we’re not hosting Thanksgiving dinner (a tradition my brother and his wife generously invite us to)…and because it’s her birthday, I’m in the mood to add a little festivity to the dinner table. (A special thanks to Butch and my Mr. DIY for fixing the dishwasher…otherwise plan B was pizza and paper plates!)

I saw these on Pinterest…
Pinned Image
Aren’t they cute? Chocolate and peanut butter yummies!

Perfect! I’ll be making them later today.
I am lucky enough to review the new Cameo for Silhouette America who will be running an awesome discount on Black Friday (through November 28th) for DIY Show Off readers and the Silhouette online store will already be having a huge discount during those days so you’re going to want to stop back on Black Friday and add the Silhouette Cameo to your holiday wish list!
The Silhouette CAMEO™ is an electronic cutting tool for personal use. Like a home printer, it plugs into your PC or Mac®
with a simple USB cable. However, instead of printing it uses a small blade to cut paper, cardstock, vinyl, fabric and more

Use Code SHOWOFF at Silhouette America.

Silhouette CAMEO™
$299.99

Now, I need boxes to hold the acorn treats and place cards. This is where the Cameo saves the day. No need to get dressed to run to the party store. Using some scrapbook paper I have on hand and purchasing three shapes from the Silhouette online store, I used the Cameo to cut out two deer for place cards and a fun favor box.

The Cameo cuts up to 12 inches wide.

There’s only one blade (instead of Silhouette’s 3) but it’s adjustable.

It’s quieter and cuts nice and quick. Ever try cutting in bulk using scissors? Not fun. Cramped hands and not perfect results either. You’re going to want to add the Cameo to your holiday wish list.

I chose a pretty box pattern for holding yummy acorn treats…

And these cute little deer for place cards…

Colorful and pretty. Perfect for a birthday dinner party?

Now…time to go clean for company and run to the grocery store for ingredients. You know I love to host a fun party! Right? You’re invited to this one:

DIY Fall Festival

The DIY Show Off

I love seeing what you’re up to and your Autumn DIY is amazing! I personally don’t have anything fall related to share this week with some other projects going on, so let’s take a look at some gorgeous fall wreaths from the past Fall Festivals from some very talented ladies. Click the blog link for more details about these beauties.

We don’t have a front entrance and I’m so envious of these warm and welcoming front entry ways but wreaths are not just for front doors!  Back doors, interior doors, mirrors, windows, walls, on tabletops…wreaths are pretty everywhere!

DIY Fall Festival Friday!

I’ve actually been spring cleaning in the fall (a car full of junk donated and more space feels soooo good) and preparing for guests but Bri and I did manage to decoupage some pumpkins. Have to fit a fun craft project in there somewhere to break up the work, right? It’s not an original project but results are always original.
After seeing the beautiful scrapbook paper from Canvas Corp
I chose to give my black pumpkin a new look to make my craft room a little more festive (I still have to do a reveal of my craft room ,don’t I? Enjoy the sneak peek!)…
Deco Art’s Decoupage is so much fun to work with and results are a beautiful gloss or matte finish. See my  decoupage pumpkin tutorial at the DIY Club.

Here’s the pumpkin I decoupaged a few years ago…completely different.

Bri’s decoupaged pumpkins:

Have you given this a shot?

Speaking of pumpkins!  Check out Pumpkins and Power Tools - a  great TV segment that aired this week featuring Ken Collier from RDA’s The Family Handyman. The segment was inspired by the October issue of TFH and touches on DIYers and using power tools to spice up your pumpkins for Halloween.

Remember when I found this old mantel in the barn?

I‘m guessing it’s original to the house.

It got a good scrubbing and sat propped up against the back wall of our barn patio for a while but I knew I wanted to bring it back into the house.

But I wanted to be able to move it around, not secure it to the wall. I love to rearrange.  Right now I love having it in the dining room but what if I want it in the family room or a bedroom someday?

Enter True Value Hardware. Three pine 1x4s, a few L-brackets
Aleco 477502 Replacement L-Bracket, Alum, for 4PLT3
and some spray paint to blend it in (I haven’t had the heart to paint the original mantel yet but perhaps someday).

Boxing it makes it stand alone and movable!

I changed my fall mantel up a bit…

DIY Fall Festival

Meet: Suzy from The Better Decorating Bible. She’s hosting today’s DIY Show Off Fall Festival and sharing her super easy, nearly free fall DIY decorating tip this week. Suzy is an interior decorating and fashion enthusiast who is obsessed with everything luxury, unique, glamorous and most importantly – on an amazing budget.  I love her style, her blog and her projects.  Here’s Suzy with two chic and easy DIY fall projects:

Take advantage of the fall colored leaves this season, and put them to use! Here are two easy fall DIY project to do this weekend:

How to Frame Your Leaves

1) Prep your leaves BEFORE the weekend – pick your favorite colored leaves from your backyard and press them into a heavy book (telephone book is great). Stack more books on top to weigh it down for a few days till the leaves dry.

2) Choose a frame that’s proportional to the size of your leaves and arrange them onto a background of your choice. Use a bit a craft glue to set them into place and put together your frame. Enjoy!

How to Make Fall Candles with Pressed Leaves

1) Set your leaves on a flat surface and brush a thin layer of craft glue (or Mod Podge) onto each leaf.

2) Press the leaves onto pillar candles and brush another layer of glue (or Mod Podge) over them. Set them to dry.

3) Scatter loose leaves or rocks around your candles for decoration, and Voila!

DIY Fall Festival Time!

It’s been another crazy week with me still having a heavy work load and the Roomspiration linky parties and voting and Mr. DIY’s birthday and even though the chilly weather won’t let me forget it’s Fall already, I did have a chance to add a touch of fall to our living room (see the before and after pictures I shared earlier this week here).

This week I decorated the mantel for Fall. Our mantel is a bit of a challenge with the tv being there and the need to disguise wiring but I like how it turned out this year.

Candle light and warm colors = coziness.

What do you think?  Busy? Yes!  Just the way I like it! ;)

Do you decorate for fall?

She means: Please, let me pay someone to do this so it doesn’t turn into a home improvement mini series that lasts an entire season.

Autumn Love Pinterest Linky Party

Welcome to the first official
A special thanks to Heather from At The Picket Fence for the DIY button makeover. Isn’t it pretty?! Inspired by the colors from the “Cassity & Roeshel” room design challenge. Heather, dear blog friend – you are so sweet and talented and I love my special gift. Thank you!

Cooler temps, shorter days and changing leaves are making it hard to ignore that Fall is here.  I’m daydreaming of new boots, warm sweaters, warm, rich colors, spicy autumn scents and mouth watering comfort foods & aromas coming from the kitchen. Snuggling in and getting cozy. Here is my autumn Pinterest daydream in pictures…some of which are inspiring enough to become reality in my home…

Pardon my casualness but this is my favorite attire for fall…
This year I’m decorating for fall in soft muted creams, browns and golds with a touch of smokey turquoise, deep red and rusty orange this year:
I love turquoise paired with orange almost as much as with red…

Autumn inspiration…
