DIY Vintage-Look NOEL Wall Art

‘Deck the halls with boughs of holly…fa-la-la-la-la-la”…well, I did that once. Holly is quite scratchy! Ouch! Guess what?! Hometalk.com and CountryLiving.com are hosting a Home for Christmas themed blog hop! Oh my Christmas! Time to belt out your favorite Christmas carols, top your cocoa with some marshmallows and to get inspired! Grab your slippers and get your pin-finger ready while you’re at it!

Home for Christmas

Once the Christmas tree was all decorated for the holidays,

I needed a little holiday cheer for above the mantel. The stormy beach portrait that’s there most of the rest of the year really wasn’t going to work.  So I decided on a “NOEL” idea for filling the empty space. Did you see the cute wooden circled monogram letters at Michaels? I knew I wanted to do something with them. This is the perfect project!

DIY NOEL Christmas wall art tutorial @diyshowoff

Materials I used: (I’ve included some affiliate links so you can find the supplies easily and to maybe add a little jingle to Santa’s wallet.Ty!)

  • extra large monogram wreath letters N – O – E – L
  • craft paint and foam brushes (I chose berry red and forest moss)
  • paper towels
  • velcro picture hanging strips
  • TransTint dye (Note: a bit on the pricy side, but this dye is AWESOME! It’s water based so it’s not oily and makes for a gorgeous wood stain. Tip: Easiest clean up ever! Just let brush dry and hide styrofoam cup on a shelf in the basement/out of the way. Dye will evaporate. Simply add water and resume use on your next project!) That bottle is going to last YEARS!
  • paint or chip brush

What I did:

1. I gave each letter two coats of paint and let dry. Note: One coat/dry brushing would actually look fantastic too! I wish I was a little more carefree. One coat/dry brushing means step 4 is going to look WAY better…so adopt a technique as if you’d had an extra cup of eggnog. Tip: If hanging in a grid pattern and using two colors like I did, paint the N and L the same color and the O and E the same color to avoid one color on the left, one color on the right. Mix it up!

2. Sand the edges, distress as desired.

3. Next, add a drop or two of TransTint dye to water in a styrofoam cup, more TransTint dye for a darker tone if desired. TransTint dye WILL stain fingers and work surface. I recommend wearing gloves and protecting your work table with layers of newspaper or a tarp or old vinyl table cloth or if you live in a warmer climate (lucky you…make up the guest room for my impending arrival!), work outside.

4. Dip the brush into the TransTint dye, tapping excess from the brush. Randomly brush, fling, stipple, drip (get messy and creative – have fun!) the TransTint dye onto the painted wooden letters. Wipe away or dab with paper towels as needed. Sprinkle TransTint to create a  “dirty, worn, aged” finish.

5. Let dry TransTint dye dry overnight.

6. Optional: Secure a small holiday wreath to the “O” with a ribbon for a touch of texture.

7. Hang and display using velcro picture hangers. You might want to grab a level while you’re at it.

I love the worn, aged finish. Vintage goodness! What do you think?

12 Days of Christmas Essential Oil Infused Bath Soak Ornament Gifts

Every time of the year is a good time to share essential oils and Christmas is the perfect time to whip up your own DIY homemade gifts.

12 Days of Christmas

essential oil infused bath soak ornament gifts

Supplies: (some affiliate links included)

  • epsom salt
  • your choice of essential oils (I only recommend Young Living brand)
  • 12 mini fillable glass ornaments (only use glass ornaments when using citrus essential oils)
  • small decorative Christmas tree
  • battery operated lights
  • ribbon and twine
  • Sharpie
  • mason jar
  • funnel (paper cones work well because you can snip the point to fit into the small ornament opening)

Instructions:

DIY essential oil infused bath soak Christmas ornament gift tutorial @diyshowoff

1. Add 2 level (or just under level) tablespoons of epsom salt to a mason jar.

2. Add 1-3 drops of essential oil.

3. Screw on lid and shake, shake, shake it up!

4. Remove top from glass ornament. Using the funnel, transfer contents of mason jar to glass ornament. You’ll have to tap. I recommend holding the ornament/funnel over the mason jar.

5. Attach ornament lid and embellish with ribbon.

6. Label ornaments using a Sharpie.

7. Tie ornament onto tree with a piece of twine.

*Repeat steps 1-6 for each essential oil. You may want to wash/rinse/dry mason jar between each use when creating a different batch.

Gift giving ideas:

1 – Give the entire 12 days of essential oil infused Christmas tree to a busy friend who could use some quiet ‘me’ time. Yes…it’s perfectly acceptable to keep it for yourself! Display the tree on the bathroom counter! The battery operated lights provide just the perfect glow for a relaxing bath soak. Set the mood with soothing holiday music.

2 – Or display the tree at your next holiday essential oil 101 class or holiday party. Bam! Instant guest favors, gifts or prizes.

Gift Wrap Finishing Touches

There are two types of people when it comes to gift wrapping…those who loathe it, those who LOVE it. I’ve always been a lover of gift wrapping so I’m excited to join 9 friends in a Holiday Gift Wrap Ideas blog hop!

Creative Holiday Gift Wrap Ideas by 10 bloggers @diyshowoff

And I’m the type who makes gift wrapping an event – a holiday party for one! I prefer to do it all at once. I love the tradition of setting out the supplies just so with a view of the Christmas tree…rolls of beautiful gift wrap, displays of cute holiday tags, whimsical ornaments, glitter pens, tape, ribbon and scissors. Pump up the volume on the Michael Bublé Christmas album, dress up in your most comfy pjs and grab a mug of hot cocoa…I’m going to share some gift wrapping finishing touches with you.

last year’s gift wrap to coordinated with an orange and green Christmas theme

Succulents & Spruce Christmas Tree @diyshowoff - #michaelsmaker dream tree challenge

Each year, I select about 4-5 coordinating rolls of Christmas wrapping paper. I love mixing patterns. And I do prefer that the wrap matches my holiday decor too. So this year, it’s traditional red and green with a touch of black.

Above was staging of empty boxes for my Dream Tree Challenge but what I’m sharing today is what I’ve gathered for real gift-giving this year. I snagged a fun mix of patterns ranging from plaid, stripes, reindeer and text in red, white, green and black from Michaels.

Embellishments: decorative/washi tape (you know that collection you have but never quite use? GET IT!), black/white printed photos, monogrammed letters, cute gift tags, bows, ribbon, twine and some snips of pine, small ornaments, little DIY crafts/gifts.

And since a tutorial isn’t really necessary, let’s just cut to the chase and show some pretty gift wrap ideas in photos, okay? OKAY! Here we go…

Tip: Use decorative tape instead of ribbon to secure/stack a collection of gifts. I used chalk tape above. I love the satiny wide ribbon-like look. And those presents are going to stay stacked! Grab a chalk marker and personalize!Creative Holiday Gift Wrap Ideas by 10 bloggers @diyshowoff

Tip: Add small handmade gifts or ornaments instead of a bow. Creative Holiday Gift Wrap Ideas by 10 bloggers @diyshowoff

Tips: If you prefer wrapping gifts as you go, designate a roll (or coordinating rolls) for each family member. 1. That way you can embellish with tags/bows/etc. after the gifts are under the tree (tag the first gift you wrap for each member so you know who’s paper belongs to who). It makes storing much easier until “Santa” arrives! 2. It also makes it easier to tally the # of gifts for each person (in case you have a little one who keeps track!) 3. It’ll create a nice mix of colors and patterns when on display under your Christmas tree.

Tip: Snag a photo straight from social media, print in black/white on card stock to create an easy and personalized gift tag!

Are you an all at once or as you go wrapper? Love it or loathe it?

Birds & Berries Christmas Tree ~ Michaels Dream Tree Challenge

Happy November, friends! Yes…this is a Christmas tree blog post the day after Halloween. I know. I know! It’s crazy! In my pre-blogging days my Christmas decorating didn’t begin until the weekend after Thanksgiving. But don’t panic! The Michaels Dream Tree Challenge mission is to bring you some holiday inspiration in preparation for seasonal decorating. It’s not too early to start collecting decorating ideas!

Michaels provided me with a beautiful pre-lit 7 ft. artificial pine and a gift card for decorating to participate in the dream tree challenge to kick off the decorating season in the DIY Show Off house.

My favorite part of displaying a Christmas tree is the beautiful glow, curling up on the couch with a warm blanket, a cup of peppermint cocoa, listening to traditional Christmas music, reflecting on the past year’s ups and downs, milestones and celebrations, counting my blessings, remembering the true meaning of Christmas.

It’s so easy to get caught up in the chaos and busy-ness that accompanies the holidays but throughout the day, the Christmas tree stops me in my tracks. It’s a moment when I’m reminded to Rejoice!

Metallic Striped Christmas Tree Tub

Looking for a new idea for your Christmas tree? Grab these things:

metallic striped Christmas tree tub tutorial @diyshowoff

  • large galvanized beverage tub
  • gold spray paint
  • FrogTape® Multi-Surface

Christmas Tree striped tub tutorial @diyshowoff

Use the FrogTape to create stripes or a pattern on the galvanized tub. i just applied mine without exact measurements. Wouldn’t triangles, x’s or chevron be pretty too?

Christmas Tree striped tub tutorial @diyshowoff

Using a plastic card, burnish the edges of the tape.

Christmas Tree striped tub tutorial @diyshowoff

I covered the handles with sandwich baggies and taped them in the ‘up’ position. Spray paint the tub. I positioned mine upside down.

As soon as you’ve finished, carefully remove the FrogTape.

Let paint dry. Remove sandwich bags from handles.

Add a tree stand, assemble and decorate the tree.
