Repurposed Frame to House Numbers

I’m sharing a quick weekend project that’s going to help guests and delivery drivers to locate the front door as well as add a little interest to curb appeal.

What I used:

  • RustOleum Universal spray paint
  • house numbers
  • picture frame with wood backing
  • scrap wood plank
  • clear lacquer

What I did:

1. Remove glass from picture frame. Dispose/recycle glass.

2. Apply light even coats of spray paint to frame and house numbers. Let dry.

3. Apply light even coats of spray paint to wood backing. Let dry.

4. Replace backing to picture frame.

5. Attach house numbers to center of frame with screws, use scrap wood plank behind backing to anchor house numbers to frame backing.

6. Apply a clear coat of lacquer for sealing and let dry.

7. Hang and display.

Hi Tech Entry Door

A month or so ago, I shared the plans with Pella Windows and Doors that mom has for the exterior entrance way to the house they’re completely remodeling inside and out.

Things are moving along with the home renovation and the latest is a cool hi tech Pella Windows and Doors entry door with Pella Insynctive Technology (also featured in the Better Homes & Gardens Innovation Home)!

So much work is being completed on the inside – new electrical, plumbing, new walls, new floors, new everything! I can’t wait to show you! Exterior/outdoor/landscaping DIY will resume next spring. I love the board and batten siding! Wouldn’t it be beautiful in a lighter color? Their plans are to create a stone facade. That’ll be gorgeous too. The ugly carport/paved parking area will be transformed into a pergola and patio. But in the meantime, a beautiful new ‘smart’ entry door just couldn’t wait. Because this entrance (before) was anything but welcoming…

Pella arrived to do the measurements and to confirm the door and accessories that my mom wanted. A quick simple visit and an appointment made for installation. Then Pella’s installation crew showed up and got to work. They handled everything from removing the old door and door jamb to installation of the gorgeous new door and accessories to installing trim to clean up. Professional, fast, friendly and quality work…

…and a gorgeous entry door…

…with Insynctive technology. What is Insynctive technology? It’s a wireless system that monitors when the door is locked or unlocked, closed or opened. How handy is that? Smart! There’s a sensor in the door that connects wirelessly to a bridge home automation hub (which reads sensors on as many doors and windows as you wish to connect) adding extra security and peace of mind to the homeowner. They’re even considering the garage door sensors for several of their outbuildings. A status indicator is then displayed anywhere in the home. We’re thinking the bedroom is a good place…a quick glance before going to sleep to know if you’re all locked down without having to get back up to check the doors and windows. A Pella representative does the installation and provides education for how it all works.

Insynctive

My mom and her husband are thrilled with the gorgeous Pella door that allows natural light to flood into what will be their kitchen, a beautiful warm welcome from the outside as well as the Insynctive technology that will provide convenience and extra security. Huge difference!

Looking forward to how that gorgeous door is going to inspire a beautiful outdoor entryway in the near future!

Home Makeover: Exterior Part 2

House Makeover Part Two! It’s been a while and I meant to get an update to you sooner but life happens and anyway! As I shared in Part 1, my mom and her husband bought a fixer upper and it’s undergoing a HUGE transformation. #soexciting! See part 1 that includes all of the ‘as is’ before pictures of the exterior.  House Makeover Before - Exterior

That car port pergola thing will be removed. The concrete will become a beautiful patio at some point. This is the main door to the home. Both exterior doors and storm doors are being replaced. The main door on the left is being replaced with a stunning Pella® exterior door. House Makeover Before @diyshowoff

Mom headed to the showroom then we met with Mike, a rep from Pella Windows and Doors,  to review options, to get measurements and a discussion on the process: 1. choosing the products, 2. a 2nd measurement appointment, 3. door installation, and 4. the Insynctive technology installation and instructions. 3 and 4 is usually done in the same step, however with a complete makeover, step 4 will be finished once the electrical and drywall are complete. I told you it’s a total transformation on this place. Sneak peek of what I mean in the photo below.

Pella door consultation (before) house makeover dream door - the plan

The best part is security, comfort and convenience of choosing a quality Pella door, especially with Insynctive technology!

What? Pella Insynctive technology is a family of smart home products that allow homeowners to check windows and doors at a glance including an entry deadbolt sensor, status indicator and bridge. Windows, doors and garage doors have the ability to be monitored in-home using the Insynctive Status Indicator or homeowners can monitor via a smart device when the bridge is connected to a compatible home automation or security system. Pella blinds and shades can be controlled using the Insynctive Remote Control or when connected to a compatible home automation system via the Bridge. So cool, right? Mom will now know when we’ve raided her home/helped ourselves to the pool and thrown a party when they’re on vacation.

House Makeover Part One: Exterior Before

House Makeover Part One: Ever wonder where I get my love of DIY and decorating? It’s from my mom! Like the saying goes, ‘the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree’ and I am SO SUPER excited that my mom and her husband (who is extra super handy with tools, the type of guy who can do just about everything home improvement related, by the way) are rescuing this old home. The property is BEAUTIFUL. The home? Uh…not so much in it’s current condition. I am just itching to get in there and get started!

In an effort to get the ‘before’ pictures organized and all in one place, let’s take a tour. Today I’m sharing Part 1, the home’s exterior. Overgrown, hidden. There’s a treasure in there somewhere!

Grape Arbor Gazebo Makeover

The grape arbor gazebo has been a work in progress for years. DIY takes patience sometimes, my friends. Especially when you’re working as time and money allow. I can’t tell you how GOOD it feels to have it complete! Grape Arbor Gazebo Makeover

Let’s start at the beginning. When we purchased our home, we loved the grape arbor’s size and maturity.

  grape arbor before

See those poles? Very, very rustic and home to some critters even…hello! chipmunk

As much as I love rustic and as cute as it looks in the picture below, it felt like a tetanus shot just waiting to happen not to mention, 6’2″ Mr. DIY had to duck to walk beneath it.

So the rebuilding process took place. Most of the roots to the vines are on the one side. We sort of ‘peeled’ those back one section at a time while a gazebo was installed in the center and more study wooden frame was built on each side.

Mr. DIY and family {thanks, Butch!} built up the new wood structure around the old rusty iron skeleton, lifting and shifting the grapes in the process before removing the old iron poles.

Rebuilding can be stressful but the grapes survived! Maybe they were even a little grapeful (haha!) for the home makeover.

Beautiful! But then all that gorgeous-ness didn’t go with the overgrown messy underneath.
And that’s where this summer’s DIY project of installing a recycled brick patio and path came into play.

See the recycled brick patio and walkway tutorial for more details about the transformation and steps Mr. DIY took to install it with his own two hands. Great job, honey! xoxo

Once he finished the brick patio and walkways, it was time for some landscaping. I didn’t know where to start. I was so overwhelmed with the size, the work that it would involve. Plants intimidate me. So, the decision was made to hire professionals for weed clean up, planting, edging and mulching.

The view from our kitchen French doors:
Worth every penny.
Wow! It was a treat to watch what a team of 5-6 landscaping professionals with the right tools can accomplish in 3 hours. Yes. I said ‘three hours’. This would have taken me months of backbreaking labor. My back hurts just thinking about it.
Now I feel like I can maintain this area, plant more, decorate. And just enjoy every square inch.
Isn’t it pretty? So romantic. So quiet and peaceful.

I’ve been window-shopping for furniture and ideas but will likely wait until spring. I’ve had the sheer drapes for years but this year, they look the best they ever have.

And scary… {ghost tutorial}
haha!

The back yard before…
The back yard now…
Grape arbor now.
I can’t wait for the plants to fill in. I’ll be adding a few here and there this week too. Maybe something that will come up in the spring.

Now when you visit, we have a place to talk and catch up. Weather permitting.  DIY brick patio

DIY Recycled Brick Patio & Walkway Tutorial

What DIY project has taken us all summer long to complete? [Not a valid template]Our DIY recycled brick patio and walkway under the grape arbor/gazebo is finally done! A true labor of DIY lovin’. ::high fives all around!::

Because of the large volume of pictures from start to finish (it took me days to organize and edit the MONTHS worth of photos), I put together a slide show of the progress from uncovering the brick on our property to putting it to good use by creating a walkway and patio under our grape arbor and gazebo. Now not only can we enjoy our backyard patio for dining al fresco, the covered barn patio for entertaining, we now this quiet beautiful private little space too. That’s where you’ll find me on pretty days. Just wait until next year when I can add some fun DIY decorative accents!

I love the herringbone pattern and that we were able to use bricks we already had on hand. It’s such a good feeling and the fact that it’s old and not new? Loooove that the most! It looks as if it’s been here at least half a century and fits with the age of our old home.  recycled brick patio and walkway tutorial

See the entire grape arbor gazebo before and after reveal here!

It may have taken all summer but Mr. DIY did an awesome job at repurposing all of that brick to create a gorgeous recycled brick patio and walkway, didn’t he? What do you think? Love it? Not your style? We’d love to know your thoughts.
