DIY Metallic Iron On Decal Tutorial

DIY metallic iron on decal tutorial @diyshowoff

I know, I know. I just shared a t-shirt tutorial a few weeks ago that I created for my sister but making up your own personalized iron on decals is so fun! Recently my blog buddy Julia from Cuckoo 4 Design (love her!) shared on her FB page the coolest t-shirt. It read “#BLOGGER”, however it’s only available in Germany so thinking along the lines of DIY (as usual), I decided to make my own for my August Happy Crafters project. They have a great selection of metallic iron on vinyl that I couldn’t wait to use.

DIY metallic iron on decal tutorial @diyshowoff

Materials:

What I did:

Open up your Silhouette Studio Design Edition software and create the text “#BLOGGER” for the front of the shirt. I also added “@DIYSHOWOFF” for the back of mine. Center on a 12×12 space.

metallic gold #blogger vinyl decal tutorial @diyshowoff #happycrafters

Right click the text box to bring up the edit menu and select “flip horizontally”. You’ll need to mirror the text for cutting.

metallic gold #blogger vinyl decal tutorial @diyshowoff #happycrafters metallic gold #blogger vinyl decal tutorial @diyshowoff #happycrafters

Load the iron on vinyl into the machine gold side down (back side up).

metallic gold #blogger vinyl decal tutorial @diyshowoff #happycrafters

Adjust blade setting for heat transfer and send to cut.

metallic gold #blogger vinyl decal tutorial @diyshowoff #happycrafters

Unload from the machine and weed away excess vinyl. The silver/gold side will peel away from a tacky transparent side (your text will be stuck backwards to the tacky side).

metallic gold #blogger vinyl decal tutorial @diyshowoff #happycrafters

Smooth out the shirt onto an ironing board. Place iron on vinyl decal tacky side down in the spot where you’d like it to show on the front of the shirt.

metallic gold #blogger vinyl decal tutorial @diyshowoff #happycrafters

Cover the decal with a cotton dish towel (or scrap fabric). Iron on high adding pressure according to the instructions provided with the Happy Crafters iron on vinyl.

metallic gold #blogger vinyl decal tutorial @diyshowoff #happycrafters

Slowly peel away the transparency. If you notice that the vinyl hasn’t adhered, replace transparency and iron again applying more pressure.

metallic gold #blogger vinyl decal tutorial @diyshowoff #happycrafters

Once transparency is removed, I replaced my cotton dish towel and ironed the lettering flat.

metallic gold #blogger vinyl decal tutorial @diyshowoff #happycrafters

Repeat the same steps for adhering the iron on vinyl decal to the back you may want to slide a piece of cardboard inside of the shirt first to prevent re-heating the front iron-on decal.

metallic gold #blogger vinyl decal tutorial @diyshowoff #happycrafters

That’s it. I may have ironed mine on too high a temp so I have a sort of distressed look to my decal … which I love! So you may want to do a practice run/test to get it just right if you’re not a fan of the distressed lettering. Good luck!

metallic gold #blogger vinyl decal tutorial @diyshowoff #happycrafters

And…it coordinates with my black and gold polka dotted iPhone case. #stylish haha!

Silhouette Scrap Wood Wall Art

I recently shared the DIY coat rack we’re now utilizing in our sitting room above a vintage trunk used as a bench…

DIY pipe coat hooks @diyshowoff

See who loves to rest here? It’s a tiny little Italian greyhound named Rosie…

DIYShowOff Coat Rack and Sign

One more picture. She’s just so stinkin’ cute!

DIYShowOff Coat Rack and Sign

and I’m loving this scrap wood turned silhouette art placed above it. Rosie approves! DIYShowOff Wood Plank Wall Art

Materials I used:

  • scrap 1 x 6 pine boards
  • RustOleum Ultimate Wood Care (kona)
  • RustOleum Ultimate Polyurethane
  • Gorilla wood glue
  • picture hanging hardware
  • vinyl decal (I used a greyhound shape)
  • white acrylic craft paint

What I did:

I cut my pine boards so that they all measured the same 30 inches long then sanded the edges.

DIY wood plank sign tutorial DIY wood plank sign tutorial

Next I used wood glue and clamps to create a large wood plank canvas. Let dry.

DIY wood plank sign tutorial

I applied my vinyl decal to the center of my wood canvas, burnishing the edges using my thumbnail.

DIY wood plank sign tutorial

Then using a foam brush, I applied the stain in the same direction as the wood grain.

DIY wood plank sign tutorial

After a few minutes, I wiped away the excess stain, again in the direction of the wood grain, with an old rag. Let dry one hour.

Then I removed the vinyl decal. I was hoping that there wouldn’t be any seeping but there was. No problem! Change of plans. Sometimes DIY doesn’t always go according to plan.

DIY wood plank sign tutorial

I used a small craft paint brush and white acrylic craft paint to fill in the unfinished portion of the greyhound stencil. Let dry.

I then applied a coat of the polyurethane over the stain, brushing on in the direction of the wood grain. Add picture hanging hardware to the back and hang to display.

DIY Book Ends

Back to school time! Time to restock the desk area for homework assignments and school projects. Add cute set of DIY book ends to perk things up.

A to Z book ends tutorial @diyshowoff

As a part of the Michael’s Makers team, I have the opportunity to create a monthly themed project. This month’s challenge is “Back to School”. A bit of a ‘challenge’ when your nest is empty but these will work in grand-baby boy’s nursery too. ;)

What I used:

  • 4  wood blocks
  • wood glue and clamps
  • scrapbook paper and scrapbook cards
  • multi-surface acrylic craft paint and foam brush
  • gloss finish decoupage and foam brush
  • {thin} washi tape
  • letter A
  • letter Z
  • hot glue gun & glue

DIY Show Off back to school book ends tutorial

What I did:

Start with applying a bead of wood glue to each block to create an “L” shape. Clamp, wipe away any excess glue and let dry.

DIY Show Off back to school book ends tutorial #michaelsmakers

Once glue was dry, I removed the clamps and applied a ‘white wash’ look using a foam brush and multi-surface acrylic craft paint. I only applied one coat so that the wood grain still showed through. Let dry.

DIY Show Off back to school book ends tutorial #michaelsmakers

Cut scrapbook paper to size for inside of the “L” shape and the outside of the vertical wood piece. I used scrapbook paper and cute patterned scrapbook cards.

DIY Show Off back to school book ends tutorial #michaelsmakers

Apply a coat of decoupage to one side at a time as a glue. Place scrapbook paper onto decoupaged surface. Smooth out air bubbles. Apply another coat of decoupage over the scrapbook paper, sealing it. I brushed on the decoupage in the same direction as the wood grain. Repeat decoupage + scrapbook paper to all sides. Decoupage will go on with a ‘milky’ look but dry transparent.

DIY Show Off back to school book ends tutorial #michaelsmakers

Add washi tape to sides, smooth out bubbles/make sure it’s adhered. Apply a coat of decoupage to seal. *There’s also the option to apply the decoupage before the washi tape to act as a ‘glue’.

DIY Show Off back to school book ends tutorial #michaelsmakers

Apply a second coat of decoupage to all surfaces. I let mine dry overnight.

Attach wood “A” and “Z” using hot glue gun. Wouldn’t they be cute with succulent planters, plastic animals, vases, figurines instead too?

DIY Show Off back to school book ends tutorial #michaelsmakers

Once hot glue sets, you’re good to go!

DIY Show Off back to school book ends tutorial #michaelsmakers

Glitter Iron On Vinyl Decal Tutorial

Many of you have asked how my sister is doing and guess what? She’s finally completely “all done” with her treatments! Hurray! Confetti & champagne! My hero! And my hero’s superpower is “hope”…

DIY glitter iron-on decal tutorial at diyshowoff …and like most heroic milestones, it’s an occasion for a celebration, right?! Right! Well, that’ll be coming up in just a few weeks when we celebrate her birthday with a super-hero themed “Bobbi-fest” but in the meantime, I whipped up a cute breast cancer survivor shirt.

What I used:

What I did:

1. Using my Silhouette design studio software, I created a design using text and a breast cancer ribbon, keeping the overall size in mind for a good fit on the shirt.

pink glitter iron on - hope is my superpower breast cancer shirt

2. Right click each part of the design and choose “flip horizontally” to mirror the text and image.

pink glitter iron on - hope is my superpower breast cancer shirt pink glitter iron on - hope is my superpower breast cancer shirt

3. Load the vinyl shiny-side (pink glitter side) facing down into the vinyl cutting machine.

pink glitter iron on - hope is my superpower breast cancer shirt

4. Choose glitter/flocked iron on adhesive from the drop down menu in the cut settings. Adjust blade settings. (Always do a test cut first to ensure the blade doesn’t cut too deep or too shallow.)

pink glitter iron on - hope is my superpower breast cancer shirt

5. Hit “cut”.

pink glitter iron on - hope is my superpower breast cancer shirt

6. When cutting is complete, remove from machine and peel away excess vinyl. Weed away the vinyl surrounding the design.

pink glitter iron on - hope is my superpower breast cancer shirt

7. Following the iron on’s printed instructions, I laid out the shirt on an ironing board and smoothed out the wrinkles. Place vinyl onto shirt.

pink glitter iron on - hope is my superpower breast cancer shirt

8. Cover with a cotton dish towel or cotton fabric and iron, applying pressure 25-30 seconds and then moving to the next spot on the design and repeating. I used the highest setting on my iron (no steam).

pink glitter iron on - hope is my superpower breast cancer shirt

9. Slowly peel away the transparency. (If letters peel away too, repeating step 8, applying more pressure/holding a few seconds longer.)

Ta-da!

Hope is my super power breast cancer iron on decal tutorial

Despite nausea and having tests done the same day, she agreed to model my handiwork. Isn’t she beautiful? {I love how despite not feeling 100%, she smiles. And how her hair is growing back with curls!}

Now that the treatment is behind her, she’s free to focus on recovering, building up strength and feeling better every single day. Thanks for your prayers! xoxo

Glitter is so difficult to photograph. It’s a more uniform and sparkly than shown above.

Rustic Glam Woodland Centerpiece and a Mint Mocha Smoothie

My favorite time of the year is summer and I love spending my days outdoors when I don’t have to bundle up, the sun shining warm on my face, taking a few moments from the chaos on the patio swing to close my eyes while I ponder the day’s plans.

My woodland centerpiece is inspired by summer, talking walks in the woods. A good hike, re-connecting. Mood boosting!

Materials: moss runner, large wood slice, fresh flowers, feathers, white candles, twine, wooden spoons and gold spray painted toy animals.

a blend of natural elements with a little glam

Create a woodland themed vignette. Nature inspired. Peaceful and serene.

It’s a sweet centerpiece for the bistro table under our grape arbor gazebo, all set for some quiet time, counting blessings, healthy meditation and brainstorming up my next big DIY project. Remember to take a few quiet minutes for the sake of your health, to breathe, to think (or not think) and to just rest before tackling the rest of the day.

A shaded haven for catching up with my daughter. We sat there the other day, sipping mocha mint smoothies, talking and dreaming big.

Do you take the time to sit and soak up the good things? What inspires you to live a healthier lifestyle?

Mocha Mint Smoothie Recipe

Ingredients for 1 large serving or 2 small:

mocha mint smoothie

  • 3 cups of frozen chocolate Greek yogurt
  • 1 cup of Silk Almond Coconut Blend (grab a coupon!)
  • Shaved organic chocolate
  • Fresh mint
  • 1 drop of peppermint essential oil

Check out the Silk products for yourself on the Silk Facebook page. Cool, refreshing and so good! I hope you get a few happy moments away from summer’s crazy schedule today. xo

Small Shared Room Nursery Inspiration

It’s unusual to see me thinking along the lines of nurseries since we have an empty nest and no, noooooo!, I’m not expecting! However, I do have a special announcement to make:

I will be a grandma later this year!

::excited hugs and happy tears all around::

It's a BOY! @diyshowoff

and…it’s a grandson!

It's a boy!

What?! You guys! Ready or not, it’s onto life’s next chapter for me. Gosh! Am I old enough? (Wait, don’t answer that!) Despite a few years of loving grand-kitties, a grand-doggy and even a grand-piggy, I feel so un-prepared! The proof is in my knitting…

knitting fail

first knitting attempt: epic fail!

Not to mention…I’m clueless when it comes to boys. My experience is limited to girls!

It’s finally just starting to sink in…me, a grandma?!

Yep! And despite my destructive knitting skills, I’m going to be one awesome grandmother! We will be the best grandparents. I just know it! My baby. Having a baby. ::please pass the tissues::

———

Okay, on to the topic of DIYs and nurseries…

For now, at least until next spring, Ali will be staying in her dinky apartment (which I still have yet to fully reveal…perhaps we’ll do that soon too), so we’ll be brainstorming some small space ideas for the new little one’s temporary nursery nook in the tiny one bedroom apartment for at least six months of tight space living.

DIY Burlap and Spool Key Keeper Tutorial

Michael's Raw Bar

As a part of the Michael’s Makers team, I have the opportunity to participate in monthly craft challenges. This month’s project is a DIY burlap and spool key keeper tutorial.

DIY Show Off key holder

I don’t know about you but I LOVE craft supplies like cork, burlap, unfinished, twine, jute…all things “natural and earthy”. I feel like I could just start a collection of natural materials with no crafting plans…they’re all just so pretty! But since this isn’t blog isn’t titled  “Hoard Show Off”, let’s get to the ‘how to’!

DIY Burlap and Spool Key (or jewelry) Keeper Tutorial

(Because we all have a habit of misplacing our keys on occasion, right? Some more than others. Ahem, “Mr. DIY”)

  • cork letter
  • wooden spools
  • twine and scissors
  • optional: acrylic craft paint (black) and foam paint brush
  • hot glue and hot glue gun
  • picture hanging hardware or 3M strips

What I did:

1. Paint the accessories and let dry. I painted the wooden key decal and spools black.

DIY key holder tutorial at diyshowoff.com

2. Wind twine around spool. Cut twine and secure with hot glue.

DIY key holder tutorial at diyshowoff.com

3. Attach accessories (wooden key decal, cork monogram and spools) to stretched burlap frame using hot glue.

DIY key holder tutorial at diyshowoff.com

4. Hang and display near door. I nestled mine inside of a regular picture frame.

Keep keys within easy reach or hang in a in closet, the bedroom or bathroom for hanging necklaces, beads, bracelets, hair ties, etc.

It doesn’t get much easier than that, does it? Perfect for your own home (and sanity) or a great handmade housewarming gift idea.

Wall Mounted Lantern Hanger

As a member of the Lowe’s Creative Ideas team, I participate in monthly DIY challenges. The challenge I chose for July is DIY decor with a DIY wall mounted lantern hanger.

DIY wall mounted hanging lantern tutorial at diyshowoff.com

Materials I used:

wall mounted hanging lantern materials

Wall Mounted Lantern Hanger supplies

Here’s what I did:

1. Stain the wood plank by brushing stain on in the direction of the wood grain, let sit a few minutes and wipe away (same direction) with clean rags. Let dry one hour.

DIY wall mounted hanging lantern tutorial at diyshowoff.com

2. Apply a coat or two of polyurethane and let dry. It goes on with a milky look but dries transparent.

DIY wall mounted hanging lantern tutorial at diyshowoff.com

3. Attach hanging hardware to the back. I did two; one on each end.

DIY wall mounted hanging lantern tutorial at diyshowoff.com

4. Flip to the front stained side and attach the curtain rod brackets using 1/4″ screws (the screws that come with the brackets will be too deep). I measured and marked the center bracket first then measured the center from the edge to the center bracket on each side for the other two ‘hooks’.

DIY wall mounted hanging lantern tutorial at diyshowoff.com

5. Adjust the brackets to fit the depth of hanging a lantern on the hook.

6. Hang or secure to the wall.

DIY wall mounted hanging lantern tutorial at diyshowoff.com

7. Hang lanterns. Add candles, use as mini display cases to showcase your favorite small decorative items or use lanterns as mini-greenhouses for succulents or small plants.

My take on the Upcycled T-Shirt Tote Bag

Materials I used:

  • short sleeved sport gray adult medium t-shirt
  • black parachute cord
  • black distressed iron on letters
  • gray thread

upcycled tshirt tote back supplies

Skill Level: Easy

Project Time: 30-60 minutes

You’ll also need:

  • scissors
  • sewing machine (optional)
  • needle
  • iron

Michael’s Coupons:

What I did:

1. Start with a washed, dried, and ironed t-shirt then flip inside out.

easy tshirt tote bag tutorial at diyshowoff.com

2. Next sew the bottom hem of the shirt closed using a sewing machine (you could also do this by hand).

easy DIY tshirt tote bag tutorial at diyshowoff.com

3. Cut off the sleeves.

easy DIY tshirt tote bag tutorial at diyshowoff.com

4. Cut off the neckline (squared).

easy DIY tshirt tote bag tutorial at diyshowoff.com

5. Flip t-shirt right side out. That easy – it’s a bag!

The following steps are optional. Use your imagine to come up with your own creative take on it!

6. Embellish! I chose to use iron on letters (apply to t-shirt according to package instructions) but you could also decorate with fabric paint and/or stamps as shown in Michael’s instructions.

7. Cut two 12″ pieces of parachute cord and knot each end of each piece.

8. Using a needle and thread or sewing machine, attach the parachute cord for bag ties between each of the handles (at one knotted end).

All done! Place near the door, ready to toss in the car for shopping.

Tea Cup Succulent Planters

It’s become a tradition! Last year for Mother’s Day, the females in our family each planted flowers in chandelier planters. This year, we worked on another planting project but on a much smaller scale. Bri and I scoured the thrift stores for tea cups and saucers.

And everyone planted some succulents in their tea cups.

So cute! Now to decide where to display mine…

Painted Wooden Candlesticks

I recently shared an easy mirror update inspired by a wood + turquoise bowl…

inspiration:

H&M turquoise and wood bowl

mirror update:

One mirror, four ways at diyshowoff.com

Then I spied a set of three {Ty Pennington Style…love his style, don’t you?} candlesticks for $4.99 at the thrift store and couldn’t resist creating a wood + turquoise collection.

turquoise + wood painted candle tutorial at diyshowoff.com

Materials:

  • Wooden candlesticks
  • FrogTape®
  • Paint (Maison Blanche Furniture Paint, color is “colette”.)

DIY candlestick update at diyshowoff.com

What I did:

I simply wrapped the FrogTape® around my candlesticks to create an angled design.

turquoise + wood painted candle tutorial at diyshowoff.com

Using my thumbnail, I burnished the edges of the FrogTape.

turquoise + wood painted candle tutorial at diyshowoff.com

Then simply applied two coats of paint with a foam brush.

turquoise + wood painted candle tutorial at diyshowoff.com

While the paint was still wet, I carefully pulled away the FrogTape to reveal a crisp, straight, clean paint line.

turquoise + wood painted candle tutorial at diyshowoff.com

The design varies depending on which side faces out.

turquoise + wood painted candle tutorial at diyshowoff.com turquoise + wood painted candle tutorial at diyshowoff.com

Now they’re a one of a kind Ty Pennington/DIYShowOff style! Working with him and he isn’t even aware.  Maybe it’s for the best as he may not be flattered that I altered his design. ;)

Then let them dry. Add candles and display! So cute! West Elm log vase is from my secret Santa…love it!

Decorate Your Rain Boots!

April showers bring May flowers! Dress up your rain boots by creating custom vinyl decals.

DIY rainboots vinyl decal design tutorial at diyshowoff.com

Materials:

Rain boots before:

DIY rainboots vinyl decal design tutorial at diyshowoff.com

What I did:

I created a design with umbrellas, rain clouds, raindrops and text in my Silhouette Design Studio software. Be sure to measure design area on boot and size vinyl design to fit.

DIY rainboots vinyl decal design tutorial at diyshowoff.com

Insert vinyl into the machine, vinyl side up. Adjust blade settings and send design to cut.

DIY rainboots vinyl decal design tutorial at diyshowoff.com DIY rainboots vinyl decal design tutorial at diyshowoff.com

When cutting has finished, unload vinyl from machine. Weed away the excess vinyl that’s not a part of the design.

DIY rainboots vinyl decal design tutorial at diyshowoff.com

Apply transfer paper to vinyl. Rub with a credit card.

DIY rainboots vinyl decal design tutorial at diyshowoff.com DIY rainboots vinyl decal design tutorial at diyshowoff.com

Remove wax paper back, transferring vinyl to sticky transfer paper.

DIY rainboots vinyl decal design tutorial at diyshowoff.com

Place vinyl design onto rain boot. Rub with a credit card to transfer the vinyl to the boot.

DIY rainboots vinyl decal design tutorial at diyshowoff.com DIY rainboots vinyl decal design tutorial at diyshowoff.com

Slowly peel away transfer paper.

DIY rainboots vinyl decal design tutorial at diyshowoff.com

Remember in step 1 where I mentioned measuring and sizing. Oops. I was a bit off. So I peeled up the vinyl, like stickers, and re-placed them for a better fit (not over a seam).

DIY rainboots vinyl decal design tutorial at diyshowoff.com

Now I have cute custom rain boots! I also tested the vinyl adhesive using water and the vinyl is still “stuck”!

DIY rainboots vinyl decal design tutorial at diyshowoff.com DIY rainboots vinyl decal design tutorial at diyshowoff.com DIY rainboots vinyl decal design tutorial at diyshowoff.com DIY rainboots vinyl decal design tutorial at diyshowoff.com

Lots of fun options to play with! Raining cats and dogs, dance in the rain, your name or a cute and trendy design. What would you create for your rain boots?

Easy DIY Indoor Outdoor Honeycomb Wall Art

As a member of the Lowe’s Creative Ideas team, I have the opportunity to participate in monthly DIY challenges. One of the themes for April is outdoor wall art. I just happen to have a bare outdoor wall. This easy DIY indoor/outdoor honeycomb wall art project is super easy and perfect for decorating an outdoor wall in our covered party patio area.

easy DIY hexagon wall art at diyshowoff.com

 Materials I used:

hexagon wall art tutorial at diyshowoff.com

What I did:

I spray painted the pieces of the drawer organizers (not assembled) using Valspar Outdoor Spray Paint. I sprayed one side Peacock Blue and let dry about 6 hours then flipped and sprayed the other side Koi Pond and let dry overnight.

Once the paint was dry, I assembled my pieces. The honeycomb-shaped organizers simply snap together. No tools required!

easy honeycomb wall art tutorial

Since I have 3 sets, I assembled two sets with closed ends and one with open ends (both options shown on pamphlet with instructions included in the box).

easy DIY hexagon honeycomb wall art

You could even leave them white = the only DIY is snapping them together! I hung mine using Command outdoor light clips.

Face on:

From above:

They’re very light weight so not ideal for displaying heavy items but a great way to add color, dimension and interest to an otherwise plain outdoor or even indoor wall. I tucked in a few succulents for now.

My covered patio area still hasn’t been cleaned up for summer. I just grabbed some accessories for photo-staging. Pardon the leaves and dirt!

The outdoor hexagon/honeycomb wall art is going to look great on that back wall when the patio is cleaned up. See the patio when it IS ready for summer lounging and entertaining here.
