DIY Show Off Holiday Highlights Linky Party

There’s snow in the weather forecast and I can’t hold off any longer. Time to crank the Christmas carols and get into the Christmas spirit! I’ve heard about some other blog linky holiday parties coming up! If you have one coming up, please send me the info! I’d love to share them during my holiday feature so spread the holiday cheer!

Who’s thinking about the holidays?  There are 44 days until Christmas. We have a vacation coming up before that, so my plan is to have my decorating done in November. I know I’ve seen a few holiday related posts out there and it’s rubbing off.  I’m ready for Christmas music, twinkly lights and holiday decorating. I recently decorated my dining room for Emily Henderson’s Holiday Guide. Then took it down and decorated for Fall and I’m ready to take that down and start all over again.  Crazy, isn’t it? Here are some of my pictures from the feature:
Natural elements, fresh pine and candles.

Centerpiece is made up of paper mache reindeer on a bed of pine,
some brown glass bottles hold candles,
some serve as bud vases for fresh white roses.

Monogrammed placecards:  Stamped book page square, pine sprig tied with ribbon…
Simple but festive…

Even the light fixture looks festive!
Holiday themed vinyl cutouts on white plates can be changed to reflect any season.

What do you think?

Next week, I’ll share a few tutorials of some DIY decorating projects in our dining room.

Christmas at our House…and a DIY Holiday Highlights Party!

I love decorating for the holidays and here is a tour of what it looks like at our house this year…

The dining room (there are still a few DIY projects ‘on the list’ like securing the mantel, hanging the door, painting the vent cover on the wall but see my before and after transformation at the DIY Club using Mythic paint, Dremel and my Purdy paintbrush!)

Here was that same doorway before:

Before:

After:  that dang vent is being camouflaged soon! I’ll also do a proper before and after/reveal soon.

When we bought the house…

This is how it looks today…

Now back to Christmas!

The apothecary jars with ornaments was inspired by Sarah at Th
rifty Decor Chick
(thanks Sarah! I hope you don’t mind).  Okay, not just inspired but completely copied but they were PERFECT for my mantel too and if you can’t believe that your home decor is an inspiration and that copying is the best form of flattery…then we all wouldn’t be sharing, right?  That’s my story!  However, our similar holiday color combinations however are a complete coincidence!

The living room in red and gold (same as previous years)…

The back entryway (with tomato-cage Christmas tree):

And just a little Christmas cheer in the kitchen because I’m crazy and decided that not only would I attack a dining room DIY-style, but I’d tackle a kitchen makeover during the holidays (or maybe it’s really just taking longer than anticipated.  Still!) …

Tomato Cage Christmas Tree and The DIY Project Parade

I know this is nothing new but I love this idea – a DIY Christmas tree using garland and a tomato cage.  I headed to my favorite local True Value for my supplies to make one for indoor use.

  • Tomato cage.  Ask a store associate.  They should have them in the warehouse/storeroom since it’s not garden season.I got the largest they had.
  • 3 – 9ft. lighted garland
  • Thick rubber band
To make the tree:
Using a rubber band, gather the “stakes” to make a tee-pee top and secure together (sorry for the bad picture! I must not have checked it before going to the next step…too late now!).
Starting at the bottom (with the plug end of the garland), start to wrap the bottom wire circle with the garland. Wrap a few branches here and there around the wire frame to secure.
Working around the frame, continue wrapping.
When one garland ends, plug in another and continue wrapping to the top.
Fluff.  If there are gaps, fill in by twisting branches around the frame or fluff branches to fill ‘holes’.
All done!

We don’t have a live tree and I love the smell of pine. So I headed out to the backyard and clipped small pieces of real pine.
Just tuck them in open areas for a fuller ‘real’ look with pine scent! (Mine are only tucked but you can use floral wire to make things more secure if needed.)
Here it is all complete!  I love it!
Need more height?
This works great for a base:
  • 5 gallon bucket
  • fabric
  • large rubber band
Take the handle off of the bucket.
Stretch a rubber band around the top of the bucket.
Sit bucket in the center of a piece of fabric and tuck under the rubber band.
It’ll look like this:

Add a round tray (aluminum cookie tray or rattan works) and it’s the perfect base to add height to your tomato cage tree.  If you have an out of the way spot, it can just rest on top. Otherwise attach with wire into the holes were the handles were removed.
You could also paint the bucket instead and fill with stones for weight to use outdoors.  The base was a little to high for my purposes so I didn’t end up using it…oops!
Again…my tomato cage Christmas tree:
