5 Easy Ways to Refresh Your Home for Spring (No Renovation Needed)

Featured

You don’t need to buy anything to make your space feel fresh again. Just a few simple tweaks can make a room feel new. Happy Spring! Spring = renewed energy! Who else is so ready for light, clean, and refreshed?! Here are 5 simple tips I do for an easy spring room refresh. No renovation required.

5 Room Refresh Tips

  1. Clear the clutter before adding anything new. Time for spring cleaning. Tackle just a corner or one room at a time. Clean under furniture. Wipe baseboards, window sills. Wash window treatments, vacuum under the cushions. Dust shelves and decor. Mop floors or freshen carpets. If we’re lucky, we just might get a window-opening day to let in the fresh air! Examine everything in the room and see what could use a little TLC. Okay, so not exactly in the “simple” category. Getting started is half the battle and so this is your gentle nudge. It makes a difference.
  2. Add greenery (real or artificial). ‘Tis the season for waking up and planting! I love to add a cheerful spring bouquet where my eyes land every day.
  3. Rearrange what you already own. Pull furniture a few inches away from the wall. Shop the house. Move things around. Head to the attic for spring or seasonal decor. Or just go from room to room and decide what might work in a fresh new way in another space. Shift personal items to a new spot. A favorite book near natural light and a window makes for pause with a view and a change of scenery.
  4. Swap out winter textiles (pillows, throws, quilts). I replace heavy, chunky, fuzzy, winter cozy with lightweight this time of year. I also love to swap out warm winter plaids for bright spring florals. Or a complimentary mix of patterns. If you’re not sure where to start, I created a simple room refresh planner that walks you through exactly what to keep, move, or change.
  5. Refresh the room scent. (Cleaning is a great start or opening the windows on a nice spring day for fresh air is the best!) Candles. Diffusers. Whatever your preference. I find citrus and florals (lemon, tangerine, LILAC) for spring re-energizing and take the place of more earthy and spice winter favorites (pine, vanilla, cinnamon).

Just a few simple tweaks to feel fresh again! Even just attention to a corner feels refreshing! Do you have a favorite way of refreshing your home?

A New Season at DIYShowOff | Cozy Home Inspiration & Fresh Start

Featured

This birthday feels a little different than most. Today I’m sitting with my laptop, a bottle of water nearby, reflecting on how much life can change in a year. Some seasons stretch us in ways we never expected. But they also remind us what really matters. Today, I’m reminded of my passion for creating, healthy habits, home, and the simple joy of making a space feel not just beautiful but tranquil, comfortable, safe, healing.

A Season of Change

Life has shifted in ways I never expected and this past year has been one of growth, change, and learning to how to begin again. But if there’s one thing that has always grounded me through every season, it’s creating a home that feels peaceful, welcoming, and personal. Life changed. But my creativity hasn’t. I’m still here. I’m still creating.

The past several months have been one of the hardest seasons of my life. Like many, I’ve been navigating change, learning a lot about resilience, and figuring out what the next chapter should look like. A lot has changed behind the scenes, and like many of you know, life sometimes asks us to pause, regroup, and figure out what the next chapter looks like. I’ve always associated “change in seasons” with the calendar, the weather. But this year, there’s a change in seasons that applies to my life.

Enjoy every moment. Funny how something meant for guests can start speaking directly to you. This season looks different. Stronger in some ways, softer in others. Still figuring parts of it out. Not trying to rush the process. Just showing up, staying consistent, and choosing to be present in it.

Why Home Still Matters

One thing that has remained constant through it all is my love for creating a home that feels like a safe haven, inviting, meaningful. That love is what started DIYShowOff so many years ago. It started as a place to share projects, ideas, and inspiration but over time, it became something more. It became a community. DIYShowOff is my voice, my creativity. It’s connection.

Over the years, this blog has been more than a place to share DIY, more than projects and decorating ideas. It’s been a creative outlet, a journal of sorts, and a community of people who simply love that same thing.

Lately I’ve felt the pull to come back to that. The desire to refresh spaces, try new ideas, and to share the process along the way. To the joy of creating to make everyday life a little more beautiful, a little more comfortable. And most importantly to reconnect with the things that bring joy and inspiration to everyday spaces. So this season feels like a fresh start. A return to creativity, simple projects, cozy spaces, and the kind of inspiration that helps us all love where we live. So this feels like the right time to breathe a little new life into DIYShowOff.

What’s Ahead

In the coming months you’ll start to see a mix of things here again: home projects, decorating ideas, small updates around my home, the journey of a new beginning, and a few behind-the-scenes glimpses of the design work I’ve been doing through Style Thyme.

If you’ve been here for years (maybe even more than a decade!), thank you for sticking around. Welcome back! If you’re new here, welcome. I’m really glad you’re here. I look forward to getting to know you better.

I’d love to hear from you! What’s something in your home or life that feels like a fresh start right now?

Grand-Moments: Planner-Devotional-Journal Grandmother Gift

Becoming a grandma (“Nanny!”) changed the way I look at time. I don’t just want to remember the sweet moments with my grandsons, I want to CREATE them. I want to be present, intentional and part of the childhood memories they carry forward. I want to impact their lives in a positive way.

Grand-Moments grandmother planner devotional journal - Christian planner to help grandmothers create meaningful moments with grandchildren.

That’s exactly why I created Grand-Moments, a planner, mini-devotional, journal (and so much more) designed to help make room for connection in the middle of real life! If you’re a grandmother, you get it. Grandchildren are the BEST.thing.ever and we want to encourage them in the best possible ways.

Why I Created Grand-Moments

This is so different than the usual grandmother story book. Most grandmother memory books focus on past stories, memories from our childhood and lifetime, advice, family history. Those are beautiful too but focused on the past and stories to pass down. I felt like something was missing. I wanted something for “right now”. Something that helped me:

  • Plan small but meaningful moments with my grandsons
  • Stay intentional throughout the week
  • Encourage their little hearts and to build their confidence
  • Keep my own faith grounded as I show up in their lives
  • Capture the memories we make as we go
  • An interactive mood tracker
  • With a quiet moment of reflection and intention setting for quality time

Grand-Moments became that tool. And I think you (or the grandmother figure in your/your child’s life will enjoy the results of setting intention too.

What’s Inside the Planner (and Why It Works)

Weekly Planning Pages: These are simple, doable prompts that keep connection front and center (even in busy seasons). 12 Months broken down into weekly planning pages with beautiful graphics and sweet prompts. I use these pages to jot down:

  • A moment of connection I want to create
  • Seasonal plans or events happening
  • A small activity or outing (nothing elaborate – sometimes it’s bubbles or a walk)
  • A reminder of who I want to be in their lives this week

Mini-Devotionals + Prayers: Each week includes a gentle devotional, a bible verse, prayer space. These help reset my heart and perspective so I’m showing up with patience, presence and purpose.

Journaling Space: This is where I reflect on the little things: a phrase they said, a funny moment, a moment of growth, or a small answered prayer. These are the memories we forget unless we write them down.

Simple Activity Ideas: Quick ideas you can do at home or on the go, perfect for days when your mind feels full and creativity feels far away. Broken down into seasonal inspiration with a focus on presence! Even if the ideas of activity elicits a groan, these moments can be silly and memorable in the long term, especially when it become part of a routine.

Heart Moments: Little snippets of works of encouragement to foster confidence. These are gold!

Letters: Space for writing letters to yourself, your family, any advice or stories you do want to pass down. Maybe just a recipe, maybe a heartfelt letter, or maybe just a “dear diary”. You decide.

Scrapbook Pages: For documenting times to remember. Create an album in your phone, place an order from Free Prints monthly and tape them the old fashioned way to the scrapbook pages. Keepsake!

Record: Pages for remembering birthdays and milestones. Tracking special moments.

And so much more! It’s truly a treasure for grandmas, if I do say so myself. lol Time with grandchildren is the legacy. It’s what shapes them and future generations. Leave a lasting imprint. Make a difference.

How I Use Grand-Moments with My Grandsons

Every week looks a little different, but the intention stays the say. Sometimes I write before they arrive, sometimes I jot notes after they leave. I just set aside 5-30 minutes once a week week (morning tea, Grand-Moments and a favorite pen). A few examples:

  • Planning a simple treat and easy seasonal craft time
  • Talking a walk and collection leaves for “nature art”
  • Writing down something they’re curious to talk about later or something they shared that was important to them
  • A written prayer over a challenge they’re facing or a handwritten blessing or gratitude thought
  • Recording a moment that made us all laugh or cry (in the best way)
  • A note of ideas for gifts as they’re favorite things are shared…activities, interests

A Thoughtful Gift for Any Grammy!

Whether you’re a brand-new grandma or you’ve been in this season for years, whether you’re local with a physical presence or virtual over distance – this planner is a gentle companion. It also makes a meaningful gift for:

  • Mother’s Day
  • Baby announcement to grandma
  • Grandma-to-be baby shower gift
  • Christmas
  • Birthdays
  • A grandmother who wants a special way to connect
Grand-Moments journal, planner, devotional and so much more is perfect grandmother gift idea!

Why Intention Matters More than Perfection

Grandmotherhood isn’t about doing things perfectly. It’s about showing up with love, presence, and a willingness to grow alongside them. It’s hugs, direct eye contact, it’s making them feel seen and heard. It’s encouragement and laughs, forehead kisses and silly dances. Games and stories. It’s being present. This planner helps me do that and if it helps even one other grandma feel more grounded and connected, more grandchildren feel prioritized and loved, then the work behind this project was worth it. Acknowlegement that grandmothers have the ability to leave a lasting impact on the children in their lives. Legacy! If you want to be more present, more connected, more intentional with your grandchildren this year, Grand-Moments is a beautiful place to begin!

How to Get Rid of Raccoons in the Attic (Humane DIY Solution That Worked)

Featured

What worked, what didn’t, and how I peacefully evicted our uninvited guest.

A raccoon mama moved her family out after we made the attic a little less cozy. (No traps, no harm, just DIY persistence.)

Signs You Have Raccoons in the Attic

  • scratching or thumping noises at night
  • heavy footsteps in the attic
  • insulation disturbed
  • droppings near entry points
  • damage near roof edges

How to Get Rid of Raccoons in the Attic Without Traps

Volume up! Because this guest wasn’t on the reservation.

Last spring, A mama raccoon in the attic at the studio made herself right at home. Unfortunately, her new home was directly above the guest bedroom… and the nighttime noises were hard to miss.

Thankfully, our actual guest was incredibly understanding (shoutout to the real MVP). But the situation had to be handled quickly, humanely, and ideally without calling in an expensive wildlife service.

The Clues: Scratches, Sounds, and a Rooftop Break-In

If you’ve ever had a raccoon in the attic, you know the sounds aren’t subtle. One night, a guest messaged me:

“There’s something in the ceiling. It’s chirping.”

Sure enough, it sounded like something was having a party in the attic crawl space.

I investigated and spotted muddy paw prints (not visible in photo) and scratch marks going up the white drainpipe and my freshly painted exterior straight to a gaping hole near the soffit and fascia at the roofline. Raccoon. Of course.

What We Tried First

Professional Help? Pricey.

I called a few local wildlife services and got the scoop:

  • Trapping fees were high. They’d set, check in a few days and if she didn’t take the bait,
  • prices went way up if they had to go into the attic.
  • There was no guarantee they’d catch her, especially with babies involved.

So… I went into research mode.

What Didn’t Work: Classic Traps

We placed a humane trap near the entry point and tried a few bait combinations:

  • Tuna and eggs
  • Peanut butter and marshmallows
DIY marshmallow and banana sheep on a plate as a humorous raccoon bait idea

One of our light-hearted bait attempts. Marshmallow banana sheep. Spoiler: she was not impressed. Humor meets trial and error.

Just kidding on the presentation! haha! But I did try peanut butter and marshmallows.

Ps. I didn’t want to use tuna or cat food…I didn’t want to catch a feral stray or neighborhood cat.

She didn’t take the bait. Not once. I later read that raccoons who’ve been trapped before are trap-shy and this clever mama seemed to know the drill.

What Finally Worked

How I Got a Raccoon in the Attic to Move Out Naturally

My guest was leaving for the weekend. I had a small window to evict the unwanted raccoon-squatter. Raccoons love quiet, dark, undisturbed spaces. So I flipped the vibe completely.

Here’s what I used to encourage a peaceful exit:

Humane DIY Ways to Get Raccoons Out of an Attic

  1. Add bright light to the attic
  2. Play loud music or talk radio
  3. Use peppermint oil or strong scents
  4. Place vinegar-soaked rags around entry points
  5. Increase noise from rooms below

I opened the attic crawl space door and placed the following:

Young Living peppermint essential oil bottle held on a wooded path
Peppermint essential oil: part of my humane DIY raccoon eviction plan.

*I always have Young Living peppermint essential oil on hand … it’s one of my favorites for DIY, wellness, and even (apparently) raccoon evictions. Here’s my YL referral link if you want to try it too. Just a few drops in the diffuser and the attic smelled like a spa (to me but not a fan favorite for raccoons).

A full-on raccoon rave. Minus the fun.

And… it worked. That night, she packed up her babies and moved out.

How to Prevent Them From Coming Back

What We Did Next: Prevention Mode

Once she was out:

  • We sealed up the hole near the roofline (there was plans for a new roof in the works anyway so that also helped in the long run).
  • Did a full check of other outdoor structures (sheds, etc.). I read that they usually have a back up plan or two. (In fact, this is in a downtown neighborhood. The abandoned house next door was demolished. I have a feeling that was the original labor and delivery den and since it was no longer there this year, she made her way to her plan B…my attic.)
  • Gave the neighbors a heads-up. (Raccoons are sneaky and resourceful!)

Raccoon Prevention Tips (Humane + DIY-Friendly)

These are all helpful ways to prevent a raccoon in the attic from returning year after year.

  • Seal any small gaps around soffits, vents, or eaves—especially in spring.
  • Use peppermint essential oil or ammonia as deterrents (not poisons).
  • Place motion-activated lights near potential entry points.
  • Play a radio in the attic or unused spaces to discourage nesting.
  • Trim tree branches that could act as raccoon bridges to the roof.
  • Try a humane trap if you’d like to first.

Pin for later…Humane DIY Raccoon Removal Tips

Final Thoughts (and a Gentle Disclaimer)

We got lucky. The mama raccoon moved out peacefully, and no one (no guest, human, or critter) was harmed. This DIY method was a last resort before calling in pros, and it worked because we acted quickly and respectfully.

If you’re dealing with something similar:

  • Be patient.
  • Act early in the season if possible.
  • When in doubt, call a licensed wildlife removal expert.

In addition, for more info on humane wildlife removal, I also found this guide helpful during my research: Humane World: Raccoon Removal Tips

Disclaimer: I’m not a pest control pro. I’m just sharing our personal experience in hopes it helps someone else avoid a costly or stressful situation. We chose humane, non-harmful deterrents and were mindful not to separate a mother from her babies.
