Colorful Eclectic Family Room Reveal

My family room finally feels just about complete and ready for a reveal!

family room makeover

If you’ll remember, I shared the before photos a few weeks back. {Family Room Makeover Plan}. With some help from Overstock, welcome to the after: a happy colorful eclectic room.

I located more before pictures..

 The details:

I wanted something narrow but a bit rustic to use as a coffee table. The height and length of this bench fit the bill perfectly. I love the “turnbuckle” detail too! The large size navy world map canvas is perfect for behind the couch.

This quote sounds just like something my husband would say. Love it!canvas wall art

Oh deer! Originally silver, I spray painted the deer an oil rubbed bronze with gold antlers for a custom look.

Workspace: We have a separate living room and I also have a home office/craft room upstairs but utilizing a small space of the family room to function as a workspace gives me an area to work on the main floor.

I fell in love with the chippy blue paint on this stool – perfect seating for my repurposed greenhouse frame desk (more on that later)!

Keeping the walls and furniture neutral makes decorating with color fun!

Simply dropping our old mismatched planters into these braided baskets adds just the right amount of texture.

The fuchsia accent pillow covers are the perfect punch of coordinating color.

A dog crate that functions as an end table. I added gold Rub ‘n Buff detail to the scrolly metal design on the front door to give it more dimension.

Don’t be fooled. My girls don’t share. The one on the right chased out the one of the left.

Attention to detail…a DIY gold-dipped legs treatment adds a little something special to plain furniture legs of this criss cross side table.

Add a touch of glam to a boring chandelier with acrylic ornaments, dangly earrings and transparent vinyl decals.

Hideaway: Adding shower curtains to an old folding screen frame hides the cat tower for a more custom look and gives kitty more privacy. Easily removable for washing too!

That fish tank…ugh. One of the obstacles (along with the cat tree and plants) for this room but the beautiful hand-crafted tapestry makes it all tolerable. 🙂

I had a good start with painted walls, new bamboo floors, colorful DIY drapes, the area rug and a few pieces of furniture but finally with fun decorative accents from Overstock and a little DIY effort, my room is pulled together. It’s colorful. It’s eclectic. It’s pretty and fun and just my style.  I love it!

Now I have a space for gathering with friends, curling up with a good book, an escape from loud ‘man tv shows’ and a workspace that may keep me from cluttering up the dining room table.

Do you love a mix of old and new? Fun colors or more neutral?

Cottage Living Room Before and After

Remember that cottage living room that I designed with Cassity for HGTV Home/Shaw Floors?

Eclectic, beach cottage, living room

how to get this eclectic beach cottage look

That room inspired reader, Wendy, to change previous owner’s hunting cabin style into a lighter lake cottage style. She apologizes for the cell phone quality pictures but like me, I knew you’d be able to see past that to the “wow!”

“Trust me when I say the entire cabin, while in good shape structure-wise, was decorated in a super-kitchsy cabin/lodge/hunting style.  Lots of bear and moose decor.  Not that there is anything wrong with that, but I wanted to steer it in a lighter, lake retreat style.”

“Before…every. single. wall.  Hunter green.  Blah.  All this furniture was left by the previous owner, so I used what I could to save money.  The sofa and one of the chairs, which I slip covered.”

after

“I had a fairly small room to work with, a minuscule budget, and a pretty ugly starting point.  Lots of paint, Craigslist finds, DIY and a few new purchases (thanks Pier One and Home Goods).  My only disappointment was not being able to incorporate that red chandelier of your room…the husband said The Ceiling Fan Must Stay!”

I love that our eclectic beach cottage design inspired Wendy’s own beautiful lake cottage version…

She also dressed up builder basic interior doors using a beadboard wallpaper….

Now I may be a little biased but didn’t she do a beautiful job with her version of the room? What do you think?

Family Room Makeover in Progress

I have been working on my family room for years. It keeps getting pushed to the back burner. Ever have one of those rooms?

repurposed coffee table

When we first moved in, we removed carpet. Then lived with plywood subfloors for a few years before finally installing bamboo flooring.

I painted the French doors a beautiful Benjamin Moore Pacific Ocean blue with glazing when I created a door pediment from an old headboard…

And the old hunter green striped LaZBoy sofa was great quality but I was thrilled when it got slipcovered…

And then I saved my money to order the Waverly Santa Maria Desert Flower fabric I had to have to make curtains. That fabric sat untouched for a year. I finally got the curtains sewn but not hemmed although you couldn’t tell in photos.

DIYShowOff family room tour.jpg

It’s a room that I tend to decorate here and there, one we rarely use so it gets cluttered up, but it’s never really been finished.

Until now. With the help of Overstock.com, this room is getting “polished”… i.e. “completed”. I also want it to function more as a studio/work space too since it has great lighting. It’s finally happening!

If you’ve ever shopped at Overstock, you know there’s a great selection of all things home related at great prices. And I love shopping the WorldStock section for beautiful handmade home decor and furniture. 60-70% of the purchase price goes back to the artisan and suppliers!

Here’s a sneak peek at my Overstock order. Definitely eclectic…just the way I like it! Some things will have a bit of a DIY spin.

Summer Home Tour

Welcome to the Summer Tour of Homes Day 2! If you’re following along and just popped over from visiting Emily’s gorgeous home at Decor Chick, welcome guests!

Summer Tour of Homes

I’m so excited to participate in Day 2 of the Summer Tour of Homes hosted by Gina at the Shabby Creek CottageIt’s my favorite time of year! Longer days for productivity and lots of DIY.

DIYShowOff Summer Home Tour

Are you ready for LOTS of pictures? I hope so! summer chalkboard

Most of our summer is spent outdoors. We do a lot of summer entertaining, hosting BBQs and family cook-outs. So making our outdoor areas pretty is where our tour begins…

barn patio

We have a bank barn which we use for storage (much like a huge garage), but the bottom part opens up into our BIG party gathering space in the summer where we can set up volley ball in the yard and sit around a bon fire.

teeny tiny scary before picture…

barn before

The barn patio area provides a covered space for setting up a picnic buffet for entertaining or a quiet place for relaxing. Improvements are still on the DIY ‘to-do’ list but you can see it’s a big improvement already. This area has been a great location for grad parties, a co-ed baby shower BBQ, a fashion photo shoot, family reunions, picnics and cook outs.

The patio off the back of our home also got a mini-makeover last month with some cleaning, refreshening accents with some spray paint, some re-arranging, flowers and a few new decorative touches…

One of the things I loved about the property when we purchased our home was the mature huge grape arbor. It was very rickety but the grapes were plentiful…

We rebuilt the framing and added a gazebo to the center…

This year we’re recycling a pile of old bricks for a paved walkway and seating area underneath the gazebo (more on that coming up this summer). Again, a work currently in progress, but check out those vines! LOVE!

It’s been a while since I’ve done a home tour. Things are mostly the same with some rearranging but here are some most recent pictures. Our house before was down right disgusting and scary but we saw past that to the potential…location, charm, character, size. But definitely a true fixer upper.

The French doors lead right to our patio. It’s so convenient for entertaining and hosting BBQs. The sun sets on the other side of the house so evenings are shaded and comfortable. Perfect for alfresco summer dining.

I’m always re-arranging the sitting room. It’s gets a makeover about once a month. It’s an ever changing multi-functional space. Sometimes it’s a sitting room, sometimes a dining area or mudroom.

This month, it’s a small office/work space…

And the family room is still a work in progress so these are a bit of a reveal since I haven’t shared little things in this room before, but fun DIY art and lots of color adds a touch of summer…

Still a lot of DIY planned for this room!

Kitchen Before and After at All Things Heart and Home

Hi DIY friends! Meet Robin from

Robin and her husband are constantly doing a project (sound familiar?).  They completely remodeled their old house on Willow Creek and now they’re having fun updating their new place on Stone House Lane. Today, Robin is sharing a little of her kitchen makeover reveal.

She started with this kitchen before…not bad. Just not Robin’s style.
