DIY Project Parade – Back Splash from start to finish

Back splash, back splash, back splash! It’s out of my system. I promise this is the last you’ll hear about it except for a link back to this tutorial at the kitchen reveal.  Here is our DIY back splash tutorial.  We finally finished installing our marble subway tile back splash. I’ve linked to the products we purchased.  This took us about a month of weekends (some of that time was spent doing some electrical work for under cabinet lighting and swapping out old beige outlets/switches for clean white ones along the way).

Materials:
Venatino Polished Marble Tiles 12×12 mosaic, 5 Venatino Pencil Borders
OmniGrip Maximum Strength Adhesive
Tile Guard Natural Stone Penetrating Sealer
QuartzLock Grout – silver
Frog Tape
Caulk

Tools:
Tile saw
Trowel
Float
Putty knife
Bucket
Sponge
Bucket
Paper towels
Rags
Caulk gun
DAP Pro Caulk Tool Kit

Just because we all love a good before and after…here was our kitchen when we bought the house (cabinet painting tutorial)… ugly. All we did when we moved in was paint the walls green, insert new SS appliances and range hood then lived with it for 3 years until we just couldn’t take it anymore and we had a savings to get started on our dream kitchen (the dream where we have savings but the dream without winning the lottery)…
The above blue countertop (want it?) was replaced with honed Jet Mist granite…

(dark charcoal grey with random white veining)

Back Splash Tutorial:

1.  Apply caulk to gap where countertop meets the wall. I’m not sure why I didn’t get a picture of the caulking gun…but we did use one. (Just didn’t want you thinking it was magic, in case you were thinking so.)

2.  Use a DAP Pro Caulk Tools to make an even/straight line. Love this little blue plastic tool!

3.  Prep area.  Cover counter top or clean as you go. Protect the granite!

4.  Starting at the edge of the counter, decide how your tile will end.  We used a matching border from the countertop’s edge vertically and ended at the bottom of the end of the wall cabinet.  We mitered the joint where vertical meets horizontal.

5.  Apply border and tile with OmniGrip Adhesive using a trowel.  Coat the wall (can be done directly to drywall).  It’s pre-mixed so there’s no guessing on consistency and this product works really well for a back splash.

Pardon the blurriness…DIY does not wait for camera battery to recharge.
6.  To lessen breakage and crumbling when cutting (the vibration nearly pulverizes edges of the marble), we used Frog tape on cuts as well as to secure mosaic while cutting.
Don’t forget your safety gear!

7.  Apply pressure to ‘set’ tiles in place.

Another shot of how we ended the tile on the countertop/cabinet edge.

8.   Let dry at least 2 days.

9.  Seal tiles using Tile Guard.  Wipe on with a rag.  It dries within seconds.

10.  After drying, prep area by covering countertops or clean as you go – dried grout will be hard to remove.

Have a bucket of water handy.

11.  Apply generous amount of Quartz Lock to the float using a putty knife.

Pre-mixed. Put the lid on and save leftover for a future project.

12.  Add grout to spaces between the tiles, filling every gap, working in small areas going to next step and starting again with the next area.  Smoosh it in the gaps.

13.  Using a well-wrung wet sponge, wipe in a diagonal motion (except when necessary against countertop and cabinets), wiping away grout from tile.  Grout should stay in the cracks and gaps, but be cleaned away from tiles.

14.  Rinse sponge.

15.  Repeat.

16.  Let dry.  Grout will hide imperfections/crumbled edges of marble tile.  Don’t stress with tiny chips. Grout will disguise them. We have an old farmhouse, so our motto is “imperfection adds character”.

Before Grout:
After Grout:

Admire work!

Again, before when we bought our home in 2007…
to this…
A work in progress 2011…
Next on the list, one of these:
  • Tearing out existing pantry to make room for future stand alone fridge and freezer (which won’t happen by time of reveal, but saving for it).
  • Removing vinyl flooring – yipes!
  • Building a larger built-in pantry.  Original plans were for a table and open shelving.  Russ has decided he’d like it built in.  Not sure if it’ll be cabinetry or framed-out with doors. Still planning.
  • Installing new wide plank hardwood or bamboo floors.  Still on the hunt for our perfect floor.
  • Painting ceiling and walls.  I think we’ve agreed on a color!
  • Framing a window and replacing French door frame with something more original looking.
  • Adding reclaimed barnwood to make a header in the middle of the room look like wooden beam.
  • Painting trim, freshening up old and primer/paint for new.
  • Running electrical to new island.
  • Building an island. DIY? Maybe incorporating reclaimed barnwood.
  • Decorating!!!

Guess why I'm so excited?!

UPDATED!

This is why we’re smiling big this week…

honed Jet Mist granite installed today…so pretty

Here are a few things we’ve purchased for the kitchen…

Venatino marble tiles which have 1 review (bad) but we’re moving forward. We’ll review our experience.  Sometimes DIY’ers don’t feel the need to review if it’s good, but if it’s bad – there’s definitely something to complain about.  Crossing fingers that for 1 bad review, there are 100 good silent ones. 🙂  We’ll keep you posted.  We’ll start off with a minimum purchase to test if it will work or if the bad review was correct.

 12" x 12" Venatino Polished Marble Mosaics

I couldn’t pass up this cute wire basket for right inside the door for Dr. DIY’s cell phone/keys/etc. (from Wisteria).

Build me a kitchen around these!  Our beautiful new American Made faucets from Waterstoneco.com
(We received a discount for our review but the
“HOLY COW! These things are awesome!” is our own opinion.)
Cabinets are painted, (Painting Kitchen Cabinets Tutorial) countertops are in but I’m so eager to see more progress!
When we moved in…
Now… (is it me or does the kitchen look bigger with more cabinets now?)
New sink! My Chef LOVES this sink!

What do you think so far? Tempting to keep that floor, huh? JUST KIDDING!  Stay tuned.  Coming up:
  • Installing garbage disposal – DIY cutting water pipes and making it fit from dual-bowl sink to single and much deeper.  Wish us luck!
  • Connecting water supply – and celebrating a once-again functional kitchen!
  • Installing insta-hot water tank (I can’t live without my hot tea all day long. No more microwaving my mug!)
  • Backsplash!  A lesson in tiling!
  • Distressing and glazing cabinets – still waiting for Lowe’s to stock the Valspar glaze so I can ‘test drive’ it before beginning.
  • Removing pantry closet to allow room for future stand alone refrigerator and freezer and patching walls. (New appliances aren’t in the budget but since we’re doing the floors, this needs done now.)
  • New wall color! Mr. DIY loves his green kitchen walls.  I suggested something different.  Every inspiration picture I see is all white.  I mentioned this.  He says “you promised!”  Darn.  lol  But then he said “you can do whatever you want” and in a sweet tone (not the sarcastic one).  So…I’m looking for a white/green color to compromise. Current green color is Benjamin Moore’s Palisades Park and I actually don’t mind it as much without the honey oak and blue countertops but I’m ready for a change.
  • Light fixtures – this has been hard for me! I bought one copper one but one existing is brushed nickel. The pot rack is oil rubbed bronze.  It’s driving me crazy.  I w
ish we could have 2 barn/farmhouse style. Still looking!
  • Building an island – reclaimed barnwood and marble slaps that came with the house when we bought it (outside).
  • Building shelving – a DIY with reclaimed wood. For the microwave/etc. on a blank wall.  Maybe even something similar (tweaked to fit our needs/measurements) to Ana White’s Tryde table with shelving.
  • New floor – still deciding.  It will be dark and distressed but can’t make up our minds just yet.  Disappointing trip to Lumber Liquidators has us confused.
  • Butler’s pantry in the hall behind the kitchen cabinet wall – with the pantry cupboard being removed, more storage here and in the island.
  • Window treatments – DIY but need to see how the kitchen progresses and wall color/etc.
  • Decorating!  The fun part!

DIY Spice Loft & DIY Project Parade

Our kitchen is undergoing a makeover and one of our goals is organizing and making the most of the space we have. Mr. DIY loves to cook and has a HUGE spice collection (this is only a small fraction of his spices) so we’ve come up with a way to make the most of wasted space.  This area is still undergoing some work but I wanted to share one of the easy projects we’ve completed.  We created a Spice Loft in a space that was blank and  unused before.  The Lazy Susans swivel, allowing for a spin and easy grab.  How to reach?   Well, because they swivel, Mr. DIY who is 6’2″ has no problem reaching but you can see from the picture what we have in mind.  More on that coming soon!

Materials:

3 Lazy Susans (Rockler 12″a little overkill on the weight for this purpose but we LOVE the size and industrial look)
Screws (we used spare screws we had lying around) (12 total, 4 for each Lazy Susan)

Magnetic Spice Tins (We already had 18 Grundtal tins from Ikea but you could also add magnets to the back of favor tins found in party supply stores.)

Tools:
Drill/screwdriver
Old wrapping paper
Marker
Tape
Dry Erase Marker

Tutorial:

1.  Use a piece of wrapping paper to make a template close to the size of the area/wall  accommodating the spice loft and measure the center/place the Lazy Susans symmetrically and evenly spaced on the paper template.
2.  Trace the Lazy Susans using a marker and mark the screw holes. The Lazy Susans have a larger hole on the front, just spin to see the small screw holes on the piece used for mounting.
3.  Tape the paper template to the area where Spice Loft will be placed.
4.  Drill pilot holes using the template.  We drilled 4 holes for each Lazy Susan.
5.  Remove paper (we didn’t do this until the end but learn by my mistake – it’s hard to remove when done!)
6.  Secure the Lazy Susans to the wall with 4 screws each (depending on your wall surface, you might opt to use plastic anchors). I had Mr. DIY do this part. (Remember – you won’t have paper up still when done.  I recommend taking paper down after pilot holes are drilled.)
7.  Add spices to the tins (loved this part – so many good scents) and write name on front using a dry erase marker (or make a label).
Swivel Spice Wreaths
All done!  A great space saving idea that frees up much-needed cabinet storage.  Also better than storing near the heat of the stove.  This area of our kitchen has no lighting so it’s dark too.  They look like wreaths, don’t they?  I love being able to see the spice through the lid.  I like that they’re not only handy and storage-saving – they’re decorative as well.
What do you think?
Thanks to Mr. DIY for his ‘muscle’ behind this project.  We had to drill through drywall over plywood.  It was also minutes before the football game.  And he is sick.  Somebody must love me.  🙂
