DIY Show Off Holiday Highlights Linky Party

There’s snow in the weather forecast and I can’t hold off any longer. Time to crank the Christmas carols and get into the Christmas spirit! I’ve heard about some other blog linky holiday parties coming up! If you have one coming up, please send me the info! I’d love to share them during my holiday feature so spread the holiday cheer!

Who’s thinking about the holidays?  There are 44 days until Christmas. We have a vacation coming up before that, so my plan is to have my decorating done in November. I know I’ve seen a few holiday related posts out there and it’s rubbing off.  I’m ready for Christmas music, twinkly lights and holiday decorating. I recently decorated my dining room for Emily Henderson’s Holiday Guide. Then took it down and decorated for Fall and I’m ready to take that down and start all over again.  Crazy, isn’t it? Here are some of my pictures from the feature:
Natural elements, fresh pine and candles.

Centerpiece is made up of paper mache reindeer on a bed of pine,
some brown glass bottles hold candles,
some serve as bud vases for fresh white roses.

Monogrammed placecards:  Stamped book page square, pine sprig tied with ribbon…
Simple but festive…

Even the light fixture looks festive!
Holiday themed vinyl cutouts on white plates can be changed to reflect any season.

What do you think?

Next week, I’ll share a few tutorials of some DIY decorating projects in our dining room.

DIY Fall Festival (and Roomspiration – Dining Rooms)

The DIY Show Off
Jena from Involving Color is kicking off Roomspiration – Dining Room edition today. She’s the perfect host for the dining room edition. She has a gorgeous inspiring dining room!  With the DIY Fall Festival falling on the same day as Roomspiration – dining rooms, I dug out some fall decor and made the dining room mantel and buffet festive.

The Lettered Cottage
A great place for Fall inspiration!

I used a mix of traditional fall colors and added a bit of blue. I want to do something different for a centerpiece next week but for now, I’m working with what I could find in my stash of autumn.
Dining Room Mantel
The “pumpkins” are  .59 thrift store balls of yarn.
The pine cone candle holders are new.
Buffet (old vintage dresser)
More shots of our dining room.
This wall before had an ugly door without character when we bought our home.
Barn door track was a $30 Craig’s List find.  Glass door is original to the house, found in the barn.
Mantel is also original to our house, stored up in the barn rafters for years.
Just for fun, this was our dining room when we bought our home…
This is our dining room today. Quite a change! What we did:  Tore down ceiling tiles and put up dry wall ceiling, changed out light fixture (to be changed again one of these days), ripped out carpet and sanded/refinished pine planks and now new distressed wide plant bamboo flooring has been installed, swapped out ugly door for prettier one and changed the door trim to matching wider trim and of course – painted.  🙂

What do you think?  Do you decorate using traditional colors or do your own thing?

DIY Stenciled Wallpaper

Meet:  Heather from

Heather just started a DIY-Organic Food-and-Soiree blog!  She’s a full time teacher but in her spare time she enjoys helping others decorate their homes on a budget, entertaining and cooking.

With a small budget, Heather gave her dining room wall a new look.  $15!  Using paint pens, she created this DIY stenciled wallpaper:

Helloooooo beautiful! Look at that diva chandelier sneaking into the beautiful wall’s close up!  Love her too!

Big improvement from the boring before:

The power of paint never ceases to thrill me. $15,a little DIY and Heather’s dining room looks completely glamorous! Reminds me why I put make up on before leaving the house!

Gorgeous job, Heather!  After scraping layers of wallpaper off so many walls and even ceilings, THIS is my idea of wallpaper!  I’ve done it in my own home too and really love to personalize the “wallpaper” look!  Thank you so much for sharing!
See the HOW TO at The Lovely Cupboard for the full tutorial.  Know what else you can see?  DIY project going on in Heather’s 1943 cottage.  Kitchen envy and more!

Have you stenciled a wall in your home?  Feel free to include a link in the comments so we can all check it out!
