DIY Holiday Home Decor: Mirror Makeover

Give an existing mirror a new look for the holidays with a simple makeover and a frosted technique is perfect! The look without the shivers and frozen toes.

DIYShowOff frosted mirror tutorial

Materials:

  • Framed mirror
  • FrogTape®
  • Frosted Glass Spray Paint
  • Vinyl Decal

What I did: (pardon for the poor quality tutorial photos – this was something I worked on in the evening for a party the next day!)

Using FrogTape, I taped off the beveled edge of the mirror. I also liked the mirror’s metallic frame so I taped that off too. Using my thumbnail, I burnished the edge of the tape so that I’d have a crisp clean spray paint line.

Apply a vinyl decal. I used a deer head I created using my Silhouette Cameo. You can use stickers or create your own decal from adhesive vinyl. If you’re artistic, try lining up strips of FrogTape, sketching your own design to cut out and apply to the mirror.

Spray one coat for a light frosted finish, more for a more solid frosting. I went with one light coat.

Remove FrogTape and decals.

Let the frost dry then display! Perfect for a winter wonderland themed mantel, don’t you think?

Frosted Mirror Christmas Mantel

I can use it from fall, Thanksgiving, winter and Christmas or even display it all year long. Wouldn’t a monogram be lovely?

Lightly sand and wipe clean each piece of PVC. sanding PVC pipe - lighted candy cane tutorial Spray each assembled PVC candy cane with primer and let dry.  candy cane tutorial - priming PVC Give each candy cane two coats of white spray paint. Allow to dry between each coat.  candy cane tutorial - spraying painting PVC Remove the bottom pieces (the drain/stand). Wrap FrogTape around each candy cane to create a twisted/striped pattern. It gets tricky around the bends but just do your best. Mine are imperfect but it doesn’t take away from the final result. Imperfection adds character, right?  Using your thumbnail or a credit/gift card, burnish the edge of the tape. Rub the edges to ensure paint doesn’t seep under.  Give the candy canes two coats of red spray paint. PVC candy cane tutorial - spray painting Carefully remove the FrogTape before the second coat of spray paint dries.  FrogTape lighted PVC candy canes Allow spray paint to fully dry.  Drill holes where desired along the candy cane. I drilled mine randomly in the white sections. Remove the plastic/PVC shavings. (Note: Great gift idea for a DIY lover! The Rockwell Jawhorse is awesome for DIY projects…it held my PVC in place perfectly while I drilled!) lighted PVC candy cane tutorial - drilling PVC Remove the bottom drain/stand.  Keep the plug on the outside and push the entire string of lights through a hole that’s been drilled near the bottom of the candy canes right above the drain area. Work the lights up through the candy cane. I used a thin yardstick to help. DIY Gold Dipped Furniture Legs

Add a little more interest (and color) to every day pieces of ‘forgotten’ furniture to spice things up a bit.

side table makeover before

This round side table is so pretty and the long criss-crossed legs are the perfect length to add a dipped look. I was really tempted to do hot pink or bright turquoise but chose gold since I like to swap out color in decorative accents so often.

Remove each furniture leg and the small leveling/floor protector from each leg.

paint dipped furniture makeover

Decide how much of the legs you wish to be painted and mark each leg.

paint dipped furniture tutorial

Create a clean line using FrogTape®. Rub the edge of the tape with your thumbnail. Tape off all areas not to be painted.

FrogTape paint dipped furniture legs

Then spray paint. I gave each leg one coat of paint + primer.

Before last coat of paint dries, remove FrogTape.

Then I reassembled the side table.
