DIY Halloween Candy Skull Owl Plaque

I do love my Sharpies so I happily accepted the offer to participate in the Neon Sharpie campaign with a fun colorful Halloween project. I used the coupon link shared below to snag my 5 pack at Target…along with more than that of course…isn’t that always the way in that store?

DIY Neon Sharpie Candy Skull Owl Tutorial

Materials: 

  • 5 pack Neon Sharpie Markers
  • Wooden shield or route 66/road plaque (I picked mine up at a yard sale but you could also cut your own from thin plyboard or purchase online or in craft stores)
  • White craft paint
  • Black Sharpie

Tutorial:

My plaque is a shield/road route shape but doesn’t it look like the shape of an owl too? Perfect for this project! I gave it two coats of white paint and let it dry. candy skull halloween owl

After a quick online image search to get an idea of candy skull designs, I practiced a few design sketches on a piece of paper. candy skull owl tutorial

Using a pencil, I traced my camera lens cap for large circle eyes then utilized a few stencils but mostly just doodled with my neon Sharpie markers. I filled in the white surface with designs, shapes, flowers, spirals, etc. candy skull stenciling

and more. I tried to keep things symmetrical but being an amateur candy skull artist, it’s a bit off. I compensated here and there with design but a part of having hand-drawn charm is the imperfection, right? It doesn’t jump out and say OFF BALANCE. Sometimes, I walked away when interrupted or at a loss of what else to draw then came back with a fresh look and filled in the design some more…DIY candy skull owl

until I was happy with my overall design. I love the bright vivid colors. So fun!

Quick Resource for Easing the Painting Process

There’s progress in the laundry room! The walls have been painted!

It’s always helpful to take a little refresher course before starting a project and of course our DIY blog friend, Lindsay from Makely Home, does a great job with the Glidden “Show Me How” videos (she’s such a natural). 

Since I do a lot of painting, I always have paint supplies on hand but when I ventured down to the basement this time, I noticed that my angled brush had seen better days. And I have to tell you, when I’m ready to paint…I want to do it right then. No shower, no make up and no desire to run to the store. So these tips for cutting in and getting clean lines were super helpful! 

Then I followed up by rolling the “w”…

It doesn’t matter that I’ve painted dozens of rooms. Taking 1 minute to review those two videos ensured my DIY process went off without a hitch. See all of the Glidden Show Me How videos here.

Now…I chose a white base since this room is in the middle of the house with no window and no natural light. laundry room walls

Nothing too exciting to show but it sure feels exciting! My walls look beautiful. So fresh and clean and one step closer to being done. And yes…there’s a fun bold painted wall design coming up then onto the baseboards. I’ll share the floor this week too. Stay tuned!

Because there’s so much “life” going on outside of DIY Show Off, the laundry room progress has been slow but hoping to get things going a little faster to get ‘er done!

So when Honeywell asked if I’d review and share the new Honeywell Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat with Voice Control, I watched the videos, read the specs, slept on it and decided it was something I couldn’t live without. Simply calling out “hello thermostat” (do you say that with a Jerry Seinfeld “Hello Newman” accent or is it just me?) and asking it to adjust the heat from across the room is well, “cool”! Isn’t it? Maybe “hot” is a better word in my case. In addition, if I turn the heat down before I leave for the day, I can log into the Total Connect Comfort app from my smart phone and adjust the settings to arrive home to a roasty toasty house. I love the ‘remote start’ on my car and this seems to be along the same lines for me…an awesome way to get through winter. Another bonus? I can customize it to accent my home decor! I’m eagerly awaiting the “clean house” command!
