Summer is my favorite season of all – warm weather, long days and relaxing outdoors. We enjoy our patio, gazebo/grape arbor and barn patio area more than being indoors this time of the year. And I love decorating our outdoor living spaces just as much as I love decorating indoors.
Pops of color: Because I love to change things up every year, I find that keeping larger furniture pieces neutral works best since we tend to use them for 10 years or more at a time and to decorate with colorful accents.
Planting flowers breathes life and color into outdoor living areas. This year it’s shades of yellows, oranges, pinks and reds.
Colorful accent pillows are an invitation to get comfy and kick back with a frosty glass of lemonade. I like lots of pillows to soften things up.
Decorative accents:
Fun planters add a whimsical touch. (pallet, chandelier, tire)…
I recently spray painted a colander to add balance to the planters displayed in our magnolia tree …
Repurposed items add interest. (bird feeder, bundt pan, birdie garland)…
Furniture placement:
I love creating different cozy conversational areas like under the grape arbor for catching up with friends on this little bistro set…
swinging with the baby…
or positioning our canopied porch swing into a daybed position for curling up with a good book or a sweet pup…
al fresco dining near the kitchen door and grill…
areas to encourage conversation…
The flowers in my pallet garden have sprouted but aren’t visible yet.
For entertaining, we set up a buffet on the harvest table at our barn area with outdoor games in the yard near by. We add rental tables and chairs in the shade for large gatherings, a smaller comfortable area for more intimate parties. I haven’t tackled de-winterizing yet, but here’s now it usually looks all cleaned up…

wow, definitely have plenty of seating for me and the family to come by this weekend! 🙂 great spaces and i love the pops of color especially the blues on your planters.
Just found your blog and I’m loving it!
I love my covered patio and spend every minute that I can there.
I love summer….I grew up in Alaska. Now that I’m in the states – I feel a desperate need to make up all those “lost” summers!!
Everything is beautiful, Roeshel! Especial that baby grandson!! <3
Love all the unique turquoise elements you have injected! The space is so inviting! I do not have a deck but would love to add one at some point. I do have a small front porch and love to decorate it as a cheerful welcome! I will be using some of the inspiration here to add more touches! Thank you!
i love decorating my backyard and decks, too. The home owner before us was a Master Gardner at the Botanical Gardens. Our yard is so lush and colorful!
Your outdoor spaces are beautiful, Roeshel, and I love the picture of you and sweet baby swinging.
It’s great to be partying with you again!
hugs, mb
Love the pops of teal everywhere! It’s my favorite color, and my husband is sick of me trying to use it in every room of the house. Maybe I can get away with using it in the backyard…
I recently finished decorating our porch after a tornado destroyed all of our old decor. I am so happy with it and am working on the patio now. I like decorating the porch best because everyone can see it and enjoy it.
Love love love all of your outdoor spaces!
Excellent ideas!
I live in an apartment, so the only outdoor space we have is a porch/deck we share with our neighbor. But I want to add flower pots and seating of some sort.
I’m actually working on my back porch now. I should be screening it in when school goes out. I’m so excited to create a little outside hang out. The best part is my baby (my cat!) will be able to go outside and feel the breeze, can’t wait to see him amused by all the NEW TO HIM outside wonders. 🙂
My Deck…It needs some T.L.C. Thanks for hosting Ladies!Smiles.Cindy
I love to decorate my new sun porch for the summer!
I love all of these great ideas!
Your outdoor spaces are SO beautiful Roeshel!! The best pic of all though was the one of you and your sweet grandbaby!!
I just love to decorate my patio. Any chance to give myself comfy seating so my pup can play with the boys in the gorgeous warm weather!
Your patio and gazebo area are beautiful! And the barn with that turquoise tire planter has always been one of my favorites. What a sweet place to sit and swing. I hope there will be lots of time for that this summer. Have you done a post on your arbor? It looks so pretty with the vines.
This is my favourite time of year!
I back porch needs a facelift in the badest way!!!
everything is so pretty, i love those pops of blue!
My husband and I are currently screening in our covered porch-a lot more work than I imagined! After we get that done we are going to build a sectional to go on it. I can’t wait to decorate the porch. I think my husband’s motivation is being able to sleep on the new sectional without the bugs getting him !
That’s hard to answer because I love entertaining on my front porch as much as on my deck. Mornings on the front porch and evenings and nights on the deck. Yet I’m hoping that I get to build some flower gardens on each ide of my deck. My deck is around 10-12 feet off the ground so I’ve been planting a lot of flowers in containers and placing them on my deck. Yet I want to do a lot more to my backyard starting this year.
Oh my goodness! I could spend an hour here just taking in all the great outdoor details! LOVE the spray painted pieces! Your outdoor living spaces are amazing! I got lots of ideas and inspiraton!!!
MY SIDE PORCH !!!This would be so grateful & helpful….TY
I LOVE All of the color and relaxed seating in your back yard Roeshel! Wish I could come over and share an pitcher of ice tea with you! It’s all stunning – thanks so much for joining me in this fun blog hop – pinning! ~ Heather

What lovey colors! I also love the way you have repurposed so many items.
Wow! what a lovely outdoor space! Love all the seating arrangements and the accesorries! I have been wanting to revamp our backyard.. and got tons of ideas from your post 🙂
Well since this is my first summer in my new fixer upper house I’m not sure which area I like decorating the best… right now I’m fixing up the whole yard because it was a mess too!

Great blog!
I am currently in the process of purchasing a home that needs a little updating. I am so excited to even have a screened in porch that will need filling up.
I completely re-did my deck last year. New railings, new stairs, new stain. Now I need new furniture. $300 would just about do the trick – if I was very careful and shopped wisely.
What a beautiful outdoor space you have! I love all of the different areas and all of your creative turquoise planters!
We like to decorate our back deck that everyone confuses for the front of the house.
My favorite outdoor project is still the brick patio under the gazebo. So many corners to gather in and enjoy the yard.
I would like to get your bug spray recipe.
Hi Jeannie! You can find the recipe here: https://diyshowoff.com/2015/05/18/diy-outdoor-camping-spray/ (I had to change the name of the spray.) Let me know if you need anything else! 🙂
Yay! Great ideas. I love decorating our outdoor spaces too. I love the feeling that when I step into my outdoor space, my first sensation should be ‘ahhhh’ so comfy.
