{Healthy} Fall Scents

Do you know what’s better than delicious fall aromas from fall scented candles filled with harmful chemicals? Well, probably baking a pumpkin pie, to be honest. Right?! And also – Young Living essential oils with healthy benefits and amazing fall aromas diffused into the air.

Fall Scents for your home with Essential Oils @diyshowoff

Here is a list of my favorite Young Living essential oil aromatherapy for the fall season (along with some benefits).

Thieves – when someone in our home is coming down with a cold or flu (today it’s Mr. DIY), I diffuse straight Thieves essential oil blend for its cleansing abilities. It’s highly effective in supporting the immune system and good health AND fills my home with the scents of fall. Ingredients include: clove, lemon, cinnamon, eucalyptus radiate and rosemary. Recipe: fill diffuser with distilled water and add 5-8 drops of Thieves.

Pomander Ball

pomander ball aromatherapy recipe @diyshowoff

Orange essential oil has a rich fruity scent that lifts spirits and provides a calming influence, peace and happiness. Orange essential oil is also rich in the powerful antioxidant d-limonene and aids in maintaining normal cellular regeneration. Clove essential oil has a sweet, spicy stimulating and revitalizing fragrance with immune-enhancing properties. Recipe: fill diffuser with distilled water. Add 5 drops of clove and 3-5 drops of orange essential oil. Don’t have clove essential oil on hand? Try using Thieves with orange essential oil instead.

Autumn Spice – Cinnamon bark essential oil is valued for its ability to improve wellness, promoting healthy cardiovascular and immune functions with a warm, spicy aroma. Nutmeg also has a sweet, warm, spicy scent that I find comforting and energy boosting. Recipe: Fill diffuser with distilled water. Add 3 drops of cinnamon bark essential oil + 5 drops of nutmeg essential oil.

Warm cinnamon bun – Aromatic Recipe: Add 5 drops of Cinnamon Bark and 2 drops of Lemon essential oil to diffuser filled with distilled water. Warning: family may be disappointed there aren’t cinnamon rolls fresh from the oven!

Fall Pot Luck – Get creative! Whip up your own special recipe. Fill diffuser with distilled water and add your own combination. Thieves, Orange, Cinnamon Bark, Nutmeg, Clove, Rosemary, Raven are all perfect for filling your home with the scents of the fall season.

Tips for Choosing A Sofa

One of the rooms in our home that is on the “to-do” list is our living room. My style changes often however, living room furniture is something we live with for 10+ years so here are some things I like to consider and some inspiration from Havertys (click the images below for information on each specific sofa):

  • Size and shape – Do I prefer a standard size and shape? Smaller? L-shaped? Sofa and love seat or sofa chairs?
  • Furniture placement – I frequently rearrange furniture for a fresh new look as well as take Christmas time into consideration. Furniture against the walls… or defined/separate seating areas?
  • Room’s function – Conversational? Relaxing/lounging? TV viewing?
  • Color - I prefer to keep large furniture purchases neutral since I like mixing things up and changing things out often. How about you?
  • Material – Leather? Upholstered/fabric?

  • Style – What style fits our home? Classy and chic? Eclectic? So many combinations and options.

Because I can guarantee that within that 10+ year time frame, our living room will go through different stages, different color trends and styles.

I may have mentioned my indecisiveness a time or two so coming up with a couple of different ideas makes the process a little easier. When looking at purchasing large furniture, I have a small list of “must haves”. Large furniture purchases must be:

  • of good quality
  • durable
  • neutral
  • affordable

How about you? What is your decision making process when purchasing large pieces of furniture? How do you stay on on track with decorating/redecorating your home?

Share your Havertys purchases on Instagram using the hashtag #HavertysInspired – Havertys will be responding to reader shares! Visit and follow Havertys to stay up to date with the latest events, sales and trends: Website, Mobile Site, Blog, Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter.

That DIY Party

Hi friends! It’s time for That DIY Party! Fall edition! Enjoying the cooler temps and shorter days? I’m not complaining. As long as I don’t hear that “s” word in the weather forecast, I’m good. I do love fall scents and sweaters and hot cocoa and pumpkin pie, pretty colorful leaves and being cuddly. I’ll be sharing a fall project this coming week.

Organizing the desk top / homework station for the back-to-school season? A small storage box keeps school and homework accessories within easy reach but not on display.

What to do:

Tape off a design using your FrogTape. Stripes, checkers, plaid, triangles. So many options!

painted box craft idea at diyshowoff.com

Using a credit card, gift card or just your own thumbnail, burnish the edges of the tape. Meaning: make sure the edges of FrogTape are good and stuck down with no gaps.

Now the fun part: paint each section. YOU customize colors to coordinate with decor or season.

painted box craft idea at diyshowoff.com

While paint is still wet, carefully remove FrogTape. Then let the paint dry.

Give it a quick light spray of lacquer and let dry.

*Optional: embellish with washi-tape and decoupage, add a drawer knob, drawer pull or leather handle, adhere something from the junk drawer or little plastic animal using hot glue, add vinyl decals or stickers. Get creative!  painted box craft idea at diyshowoff.com painted box craft idea at diyshowoff.com

Use as a pencil box, for keepsake treasures, to store note or recipe cards, for organizing an essential oils collection, to tuck on a bookcase filled with bookmakers and highlighters, to keep cords handy or for a unique way of wrapping gifts.

7 Essential Oils for Sleep

Sleepy time! Do you love it as much as I do? I know I don’t want to be operating power tools with a foggy head from lack of sleep.  Not to mention, my family isn’t the most pleasant to be around when functioning on little sleep (me either for that matter). Know what I mean?

In our home: Someone has a bit of trouble falling asleep and when he does sleep, he sometimes snores. No sleep apnea. Just out like a light when he finally gets there and sometimes, quite the disturbance. Me? I have a bit of trouble with turning my brain off at night so I read until I can’t keep my eyes open any longer. Then I sleep peacefully unless there’s snoring from the other side of the bed.

Young Living sleepy time essential oils @diyshowoff #1836762

Here are the Young Living essential oils that have helped our family get a peaceful night’s rest:

  • Cedarwood - Cedarwood has a warm, balsamic, woody aroma. It is relaxing and soothing when used for massage, and has long been used as a beneficial ingredient in cosmetic preparations for oily skin. He says it doesn’t make him feel drowsy instantly but it does help him get a very restful night of sleep. He does not like the smell (I don’t mind it) but the odor doesn’t stay around long and it’s a small price to pay for a restful snooze. He simply rubs a drop onto the bottom of each foot.
  • Valerian - He adds a drop to a glass of milk. He does make a face and says it’s like a shot of what whiskey + milk would taste like but it makes him drowsy within a few minutes and gives him a peaceful night’s sleep. He’s also added a drop to each foot but prefers the “shot” orally. This one smells stinky to me but again, not really a big deal. Valerian root has been used for thousands of years for its calming, grounding, and emotionally balancing influences. During the last three decades, it has been clinically investigated for its relaxing properties. Before we were introduced to Young Living essential oils, my husband occasionally took this in pill form as needed.
  • Valor – Does your partner’s snoring inspire near violent thoughts or make you reach for a pillow to cover your own head? A little drop of this onto each of his big toes at night instantly stops loud snoring. When I tried it, I was stunned by the instant results. He was unaware, didn’t budge or wake when I applied it. It sounds ridiculous, but his breathing didn’t even change. The noise just stopped. Unbelievable! Valor is an empowering combination of therapeutic-grade essential oils that works with both the physical and spiritual aspects of the body to increase feelings of strength, courage, and self-esteem in the face of adversity. Renowned for its strengthening qualities, Valor enhances an individual’s internal resources. It has also been found to help energy alignment in the body.
  • RutaVaLa - RutaVaLa promotes relaxation of the body and mind. It helps ease tension and relieve stress. The blend helps overcome negative feelings while encouraging a positive attitude and comfort. A blend of rue, valerian and lavender. We have yet to try this one but it should be here tomorrow and will reside on our bedside table. Apply RutaVaLa essential oil blend on the back of neck, base of spine, the feet, or just under the nose before bed to overcome negative feelings and lull the mind into a sense of comfort.
  • Lavender – I add a few drops to distilled water with a pinch of epsom salts to a spray bottle and spritz our pillows and sheets every evening. Lavender has a fresh, sweet, floral, herbaceous aroma that is soothing and refreshing. Because it is the most versatile of all essential oils, no home should be without it. Lavender is an adaptogen, and therefore can assist the body when adapting to stress or imbalances. It is a great aid for relaxing and winding down before bedtime, yet has balancing properties that can also boost stamina and energy. Therapeutic-grade lavender is highly regarded for skin and beauty. It may be used to soothe and cleanse common cuts, bruises, and skin irritations. Lavender may also be used to enhance the flavor of foods.
  • Peace & Calming - Peace & Calming is a gentle, fragrant blend. When diffused, it helps calm tensions and uplift the spirit, promoting relaxation and a deep sense of peace. When massaged on the bottoms of the feet, it can be a wonderful prelude to a peaceful night’s rest. Peace & Calming may be especially calming and comforting to young children after an overactive and stressful day. This one is my mom’s favorite and she claims a little goes a long way. A lovely oil to diffuse at bed time. Calms everyone…including the dog.
  • Tranquil Roll On - When I have had a stressful day and can’t even concentrate on my book at bedtime, I apply this to my wrists, temples and a swipe under my nose for relaxation. Tranquil Roll-On is a blend of lavender, cedarwood and roman chamomile essential oils formulated to calm and relax the body and mind. Using the roll-on application, Tranquil provides convenient and portable relaxation. Good for anxiety too.

No groggy feeling the next day. No side effects.

7 sleepy time essential oils @diyshowoff Young Living #1836762

*Note: We do not use all of the above mentioned oils every night, all together at one time. He chooses either Valerian, Cedarwood or soon, RutaVaLa…whichever we happen to have on hand. He alternates between them, one a night. I use the lavender recipe to spritz the sheets and pillows every night or when I remember to. I crack open the Tranquil if he’s exhausted after a long day at work and apply Valor before (if I remember) or after he’s asleep if his snoring bothers me. We diffuse Peace & Calming while we’re unwinding in the evenings. I grab the Tranquil Roll On (or Stress Away) if I have a lot on my mind.

Suffering from insomnia, or having trouble getting your brain to stop when your head hits the pillow, kept awake by snoring and desperate to try something all natural instead of prescription or over-the-counter meds … I recommend giving these Young Living essential oils a try. I’ve had several family members share amazing results. I hope they’ll help you too!

{Hospital} Bedside Table Makeover

One of the Lowe’s Creative Ideas challenges for September is furniture makeover…

Hospital Bedside Table Makeover tutorial

I just happened to score this little thrifty treasure from the thrift store…

hospital bedside table DIY makeover

for the low, low price of $3.99! A cute {hospital} bedside adjustable table in need of some TLC.

I gave it a good cleaning then disassembled the parts.

After taping off the casters, I gave it a few light sprays with a metallic gold spray paint.

hospital bedside table DIY makeover

Once that was dry, I went back and forth on making a decision on the tray part. A shelf board would work. So would a serving tray.

hospital bedside table DIY makeover

I went with the serving tray. I reassembled and used smaller wood screws to attach the tray to the frame.

Now it’s a convenient bedside accessory…

I liked that it has a lip since the tray tilts forward. Great for holding a book or tablet.

DIY Fall Door/Wall Decor Craft

Fall is in the air! The upcoming baby shower theme will be “woodland”. Perfect for the fall season, don’t you think? So I made up a few of these twig leaf door or wall decor crafts for prizes. And just in time to participate in the Autumn Abound Fall Blog Hop (more on that below)!

autum DIY decor - diyshowoff.com

Materials:

  • Twig/stick leaf form from the craft store (you could even make your own) or grapevine wreathes, etc.
  • Fall floral pics including faux acorns, wheat, leaves, feathers
  • Hot glue
  • Burlap ribbon
  • Twine
  • Twist tie or floral wire

Tools: wire cutters, scissors, hot glue gun

Time: approx. 10 minutes

What I did:

Simply assemble in layers and secure each embellishment with hot glue.  DIY Fall Decor Craft at diyshowoff.com

Cut a 36″ piece of burlap. Fold and snip the ends. Lay flat and overlap ends. Tie a knot/bow using twine to gather and finish the burlap bow. Secure to arrangement using hot glue.

Use a twist tie to assist with hanging.

I think that was the easiest tutorial ever! If I can do it, so can you!

Blogger Stylin’ Home Tours – Favorite Room Edition {Kitchen & Pantry}

Following the Blogger Stylin’ Home Tours – Favorite Room Edition? ::gasp!:: So fun! So exciting! If you love looking at ‘real’ and ‘beautiful’ and ‘inspiring’ homes then you’re going to want to catch up on the series starting with Lindsay at The White Buffalo Styling Co.

Have you just popped over from The Chronicles of Home ? Welcome, friends! I’m so happy you’re here! Come in, come in! Make yourself at home!

Favorite Room Home Tours

It’s the next to the last stop of a week long series of beautiful homes. I wish I had some sort of grand finale of “Holy smokes! They saved the best for last!” but our home is really still such a work in progress. And then there was a bonus favorite room added after me so I’m no longer last. But don’t you just want to gather all of these pretty rooms to create one big awesome house? That’s where I’ll live. ;)

My favorite room is almost always the room we most recently completed. Know what I mean? All of the blood, sweat, tears and labor of love, to the finishing touches and I could sit in that room for hours just soaking up the feeling of the reward of a job well done. And well, JUST DONE! Ya know?

I am so SO in love with my bathroom, you guys! If you saw the ‘before’ pictures of what I lived with for so many years, you understand…now it’s just the prettiest soothing spa-like room. I’d move my bed or office in there if there was room. BUT anyway, that seems like such an odd room to choose. “Roeshel’s favorite room is the bathroom! hahahahahaha!” Ugh.

DIYShowOff Bathroom Makeover before and after

Plan B: I’ll go with our open pantry. Again, another odd choice so we’ll include the kitchen too since that makes it more like an entire room. Kitchen and pantry. It’s all related to cooking & food storage, right? Right! Ready? Let’s go!

This is sort of what we had to start with (except the bamboo flooring is newer). A strange small room/hallway behind the kitchen that has SIX doorways.

open pantry before

Now we utilize this area for extra food storage as well as a place to house our little-used microwave. It sits right next to the kitchen. This is from when we just finished before Christmas last year…

open pantry at diyshowoff.com

I keep this area organized and pretty with a little decorating and we’re slowly adding dried foods to the shelves in pretty glass containers. Canned foods and boxes get stored in baskets and other ‘not-so-pretties’ behind closed kitchen cabinets.

Animal Humane Society Before and After Grand Reveal and Adoption Event

Helloooo, DIY friends! I’ve just returned from an awesome packed few days where I partnered with Purina Cat Chow in assisting with a fun makeover of the Animal Humane Society in Golden Valley, MN. Exciting and so rewarding!

#purinacatchow #myrescuestory @purinacatchow @diyshowoff

The Purina Cat Chow “Building Better Lives” program is committed to helping improve the lives of cats across the country by supporting 50 cat-focused shelters nationwide – one in every state! – and donating a generous $275,000 in renovation and adoption support, product and monetary donations as well as a possible $50,000 donation to The Petfinder Foundation, for a total donation of up to $325,000. Wow! Purina Cat Chow identified three of the participating 50 shelters for on-site makeovers of their cat facilities valued at $50,000 each or $150,000 total. The makeovers include custom changes and upgrades to meet the specific needs for each facility. Bri and I were so excited to lend a hand!

#MyRescueStory {and Pet DIY}

Meet: CocoRosie or as we call her, “Rosie”. An Italian Greyhound.

CocoRosie - diyshowoff

Ever since we lost our beloved doxie (Niski) a few years back, I’ve been wanting to open our hearts and home to another dog but just didn’t feel ready. I was just heartbroken. Even now when I think about her, my eyes tear up. I loved that little sausage dog.

When I truly began to settle down into my empty nest, it just felt too quiet. I mean, Lalka, our ragdoll cat is super sweet but most days, she has her own agenda, comes out of hiding or wakes up from napping and plays on her own terms. Cats are so independent. When she’s not bullying the dog, she’s hunting mice but mostly, she’s enjoying cat naps. Or as the baby of our family, looking to get into mischief.

Meet “Lalka”:

And a lot of times, she’s supervising my DIY projects…just to make sure I’m doing things right.

Meet: Sneaks. And you may not know this, but we actually have a second cat. His name is Sneaks. He was rescued/adopted by my husband before we met. He is super sweet. He currently resides at my husband’s office (he loves people but isn’t a fan of other animals) so he has taken to welcoming and putting clients at ease. He takes his job as VP of public relations very seriously.

I started considering welcoming a dog into our lives again. However this time I knew I’d prefer to rescue an adult rather than adopt a puppy and so the hunt began.

Italian Greyhound Rosie

I saw an Italian Greyhound who needed a home on Craig’s List. Unfortunately by the time I called, he already had a new home but it got me to researching the breed a little more. And the breed seemed like a good fit. It seemed as if we had a lot in common!

Italian Greyhounds:

  • Small in size.
  • Short fur/little shedding.
  • Imaginative.
  • Funny.
  • Snuggly and affectionate.
  • Gentle.
And after more research, I discovered a local/tri-state Italian Greyhound Rescue. After more thought, I finally applied. The adoption process was more than I anticipated with paperwork and a home visit but understandingly so. Our home visit was completed by a friendly IG loving/owning couple in our town who brought their little guy with them for us to meet. He was just so irresistible, the couple so kind and knowledgable. Before we knew it, we were approved!

I was looking for an adult female Iggy. It took about 3-4 months before we found her.

Lucky for us, that same couple that did our home visit began to foster Italian Greyhounds in our town and had a sweet little girl.

I was nervous. I was hesitant. Would I love a new dog as much as I loved our dachshund? Would she be a good fit to our laid back, boring life?

Name: CocoRosie
Breed: Italian Greyhound
Age: 8 years old
Weight: 10 lbs.
Favorite past time: Burrowing under the blankets, sleeping.

Then I met her. 10 lbs. of the sweetest little dog. Calm. Relaxed. So well behaved.

I fell head over heels in love with her. She is super sweet! Those big brown eyes. Her personality is so similar to our doxie…even down to the love of burrowing under the blankets! And guess what – she is perfectly house trained as well! Bonus!

And they aren’t kidding when they call IGs “velcro dogs”. If I’m on the couch, she’s on the couch. If I get up to go to another room, she follows.  If I walk out the door, her nose is looking out the French door glass. If I’m on the patio, she’s right there. She never leaves my side.

Rosie has been enjoying some attention here at DIYShowOff…

Drop Zone Makeover {Back to School Organization} Before & After

It’s back to school season! It’s the perfect time to re-think the “drop zone” to organize back packs, shoes, coats…all the things that get unloaded when walking in the door.

before and after back door drop zone area makeover

As a part of the Lowe’s Creative Ideas team, one of this month’s challenge options included a back to school organization theme. Since my sister is still recovering and her little one will be  starting pre-school in a couple of weeks (AND her birthday is right around the corner),  I surprised her with a 6-hour back door entryway makeover.

Here are the before pictures: this little space just wasn’t functioning well as an organized drop zone with storage options.

back entryway makeover before back entryway makeover before back entryway makeover before coat rack before

First up, we emptied the area then I freshened up the walls with paint to give the space more light and a bigger neutral vibe. I used Valspar Signature (Paint + Primer). Color is silver leaf. Isn’t it pretty? Just a touch of a gray-blue tint. Best part? It covered up the raspberry-painted paneling in just two coats.

back entryway makeover before back entryway makeover before back entryway makeover before

While the paint was drying, I assembled the furniture consisting of a storage bench and cubby shelves. I even had a helper…

back entryway makeover before

Once the paint was dry (use a fan to speed along the drying process), I added some coat hooks for back packs, coats and hats. Using a level (and screwing into the walls studs/using wall anchors) to secure the coat racks.

Since the previous window treatment on the door wasn’t a good fit, I replaced the curtain on the door with a new roman shade.

Once more, the before when opening the door…

After…

Then added in some pretty accessories and wall art.

And now…the room feels bigger, fresher, prettier.

My nephew started adding his shoes to bins and hanging his backpacks the minute we finished up. No more hunting for lost shoes and his backpack is ready to go. He also grabbed his ‘camera’ to take a few shots of his own.
