Outdoor Bistro Set Before and After

With summer right around the corner, it’s time to spruce up outdoor seating areas. The oil rubbed bronze of this bistro set matched everything nicely but it’s just so brown and tired.

Before:

DIYShowOff Bistro Set Makeover before

Originally it was a $15 yard sale score, ivory and rusty.

Wayyyyy before…

Here it is better staged in our grape arbor/gazebo recycled brick patio/pathway reveal, but it gets lost…

Here’s what I did:

Bistro Set Makeover @diyshowoff

Remove the glass top. A little sanding of the rusty spots, a good wipe down (Yes! That’s Young Living Thieves household cleaner)…

Thieves cleaner

and one can of Rust-Oleum Painter’s Touch Ultra Cover 2X in navy (don’t forget your mask)!, a day of dry time….

…then re-insert glass, top with a couple of homemade cushions and I’m loving the new pop of color.

After:

Much happier, isn’t it? Do you have some tired old boring outdoor furniture ready for a re-freshening?

DIY {club foot} Brace Cover

Sweet grand baby boy was born with club feet and after months of casting then surgery, he graduated to special shoes and a bar.

Before…

DIY {club foot} brace cover tutorial @diyshowoff

And sometimes that bar conks him on the head. Ouch. So I made up a little cushion/cover and wanted to share here for others who may be searching to cover their baby’s Ponseti bar.

DIY {club foot} brace cover tutorial @diyshowoff

Materials I used:

  • pipe insulation
  • fabric
  • Velcro one wrap

DIY {club foot} brace cover tutorial @diyshowoff

What I did:

I cut a piece of pipe insulation to fit the brace between the shoes (6 inches).

Next, I cut a piece of scrap fabric 8×9 inches. (It’s a snug fit so I’d suggest doing 8×11 inches instead…a little extra to tuck in.)

DIY {club foot} brace cover tutorial @diyshowoff

Then just ironed/sewed the borders.

DIY {club foot} brace cover tutorial @diyshowoff DIY {club foot} brace cover tutorial @diyshowoff

I cut two pieces of the Velcro to fit around the pipe insulation snuggly.

DIY {club foot} brace cover tutorial @diyshowoff

Assembly: Insert the brace into the pipe insulation. Wrap the fabric around the pipe insulation, tucking the ends into the open side. Secure with the Velcro.

Optional: If you’re more of a sewing expert than me, you could do snaps or sew on velcro.

DIY {club foot} brace cover tutorial @diyshowoff

Now, the brace has a bit of cushioning. If there was only a way to cushion those hard soled shoes.

Ps. Yes, his shoes are on backwards. Doctors orders, part of the treatment. Isn’t he the cutest?

DIY Vinyl Iron on Decal

My monthly project for Happy Crafters is all about iron on vinyl, my favorite being the gold vinyl where I can quickly add a little bling to a plain t-shirt, tote back, pillow covers, onesies, etc.

gold metallic iron on vinyl decal tutorial @diyshowoff #happycrafters

Materials:

Tutorial:

Use Silhouette Design Studio software to create a design of text with a quote.

gold metallic iron on vinyl decal tutorial @diyshowoff #happycrafters

Resize text the text box and font to fit the front of your t-shirt.

*Important! Right click and “flip horizontally” so that the text is a mirror image/backwards.

gold metallic iron on vinyl decal tutorial @diyshowoff #happycrafters gold metallic iron on vinyl decal tutorial @diyshowoff #happycrafters

Load sheet of vinyl iron on into the machine shiny/color side facing down.

gold metallic iron on vinyl decal tutorial @diyshowoff #happycrafters

Click “send to cut” and be sure to adjust settings for cutting smooth heat transfer. I found that I needed to up the blade 2 more than recommended to get through the vinyl (awesome quality stuff!) so you may want to do a small text cut.

gold metallic iron on vinyl decal tutorial @diyshowoff #happycrafters

Click “cut”. Once cutting is complete, remove vinyl from machine.

Trim away excess vinyl. I like to have about an inch border around my text.

Weed away the negative part of the design (leaving text on the tacky clear transfer sheet).

gold metallic iron on vinyl decal tutorial @diyshowoff #happycrafters

Place iron on sticky side down onto t-shirt.

gold metallic iron on vinyl decal tutorial @diyshowoff #happycrafters

Iron according to paper instructions included with the vinyl iron on material with a cotton cloth over the transparent plastic.

gold metallic iron on vinyl decal tutorial @diyshowoff #happycrafters

Carefully peel away clear transfer sheet. If vinyl iron on design hasn’t transferred, replace transparent sheet and re-iron/try again.

gold metallic iron on vinyl decal tutorial @diyshowoff #happycrafters gold metallic iron on vinyl decal tutorial @diyshowoff #happycrafters

That’s it! This metallic gold foil has a mirror quality, reflections in the decal. So cool!

Celebrate America Partyscape

  Celebrations Challenge #MichaelsMakers

It’s not often I’m way ahead of the game but when I am, it’s by more than three months. haha! As a part of the Michael’s Makers team, my final assignment came with a “Celebrate America” theme from the Celebrations campaign. Due in April. Yes, quite a bit early and especially since photos were actually due in March while there was still snow on the patio but it wouldn’t be a “challenge” otherwise, right? I had a blast decorating our dresser turned kitchen island in red, white & blue for a festive party. And hey, I’m happy to celebrate America any time of the year.

Decoupaged USA letters

Supplies: Shop Home Decor and Floral at Michaels

  • wooden letters U, S, A
  • decoupage
  • red, white, blue designed scrapbook paper

What I did: Trace letters onto scrap book paper. Cut out scrap book paper shapes. Apply decoupage to wooden letter (works like a glue). Carefully line up scrapbook paper. Apply another layer of decoupage over top of the scrapbook paper to seal. Let dry and display.

Add a few red, white and blue doilies to a burlap table runner for an inspired ‘firework’s look.

red white and blue decorative accents @diyshowoff @michaelsmakers

Red, white and blue straws and red and white polka dot cupcake liners add to the patriotic color theme. There are little American flags near the cash register. Add a red/blue topper to the cupcakes (I found red and blue keys).

Red, white and blue star & mesh banner

Supplies:

  • red, burlap, blue wide mesh ribbon
  • star wire garland
  • twine or yarn

red white and blue decorative accents @diyshowoff @michaelsmakers

Tutorial:

  1. Cut a piece of twine the length you’d like your banner to be. Tie loops on the ends for hanging.
  2. Cut pieces of mesh to tie onto the twine.
  3. Secure mesh with snips of star wire garland.
  4. Thread onto twine.
  5. Repeat until your banner is full. Fluff and display.

Creating a safe home is more important than creating a pretty home. Did I just say that out loud? —–> Before I became a blogger, I worked for 10 years at a cancer center but at that time, cancer was never a word in our family dictionary until the last four years (every spring for FOUR years)… #1 Four years ago, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. What? We have no family history. #2 The following year, my younger sister underwent a double mastectomy and chemo for breast cancer. What? There is no hereditary gene! #3 Last year, my dad’s sister was diagnosed with breast cancer. Again, no family history on that side of my family either. #4 This past week, my youngest sister had her double mastectomy (biopsy results still pending). Four close family members in four years. You guys, it’s so obvious that what we consume and our environment are contributing factors. We need to be our own advocates when it comes to our health which is the #1 reason I’m so passionate about sharing Young Living essential oils and products. I was introduced to Young Living at a time when I was feeling helpless and praying. Now I can’t help but want to get these products into your homes too. I can’t help but feel like a walking time bomb myself but find comfort that I’m making better choices now in an effort to prevent being the next victim. And I understand. I used to roll my eyes too. Now my eyes are wide open to making healthier choices. One small change can help provide life-changing experiences. I’m offering a special deal to help get you started and if you’re not already, I pray that you’ll take the time to “take care of you”, to work towards creating a healthy home environment and consider joining an amazing supportive and encouraging community of women, men, moms, sisters, bloggers and non-bloggers, even doctors and hospitals – who are embracing wellness, purpose and abundance with the #1/leading essential oils company in the world. Let’s talk! Painted Chalkboard Labels

DIY painted chalkboard labels on storage cubes @diyshowoff

Our guest bathroom has some bins for keeping things stocked and organized. I know what’s in them, however guests have no idea. So I grabbed:

  • the bins from the shelf in the guest bathroom
  • FrogTape® Multi-Surface
  • chalkboard paint
  • foam paint brush

Here’s what I did:

Using my FrogTape, I taped off rectangles onto the front of the bins….

DIY painted chalkboard labels on storage cubes @diyshowoff

I burnished the edges of the tape with my thumbnail…

DIY painted chalkboard labels on storage cubes @diyshowoff

and gave each rectangle label area two coats of chalkboard paint.

DIY painted chalkboard labels on storage cubes @diyshowoff DIY painted chalkboard labels on storage cubes @diyshowoff

While the paint was still wet, I carefully removed the FrogTape to reveal crisp clean paint lines! I let the paint dry.

I labeled the bins using a chalkboard marker.

Love Your Home Challenge

In 2007, we purchased a fixer upper farmhouse with the goal of creating our dream home and 8 years later, we’ve come a long way but it’s still far from being finished. Most times it’s finances that keep projects on the back burner. Sometimes things get a little out of hand and taking the time to care for our home becomes last priority. It happens. ::gasp:: I know. Lately, I’ve gone from seeing the potential and enjoying the journey to feeling like there’s never enough money, things are too cluttered and just feeling overwhelmed by it all.

Love Your Home

This couldn’t have come at a better time. I was invited to complete a simple Love Your Home Challenge and recently had the opportunity to read through an inspiring new book by long time blog acquaintance, Melissa Michaels from the Inspired Room, called “Love the Home You Have”: Inspiration to embrace imperfections, a reminder to focus on the blessings and to embrace “home”, no matter what stage it’s in, no matter what life stage we’re in. It reminded me to look at the things I do enjoy about this home. Baking in the kitchen when it’s clean…

Guest Room/Nursery reveal @diyshowoff

the lighting and thrifted charm of our family room…

spring twig centerpiece tutorial @diyshowoff

an organized open pantry…

But it’s so easy to get caught up in what’s not finished, what’s not perfect, to lose sight of creating a dream home right where we are. And I couldn’t help but put the book aside to tackle an area that I’ve been putting off. Something simple. The dreaded drop zone that used to be our dining room table…

#loveyourhomechallenge

Yikes! #loveyourhomechallenge

“Love the Home you Have” is a simple reminder that one small step a day of taking care of the little things contributes to a happy home. Whether it’s simply wiping down the cabinets, decluttering, cleaning, rearranging furniture or clearing the dining room table. Something, anything – brings about a sense of accomplishment and contentment.

Love The Home You Have from The Inspired Room on Vimeo.

My mission: organizing the mess, putting things away, a little light cleaning, shopping the house for a fresh touch. The room still needs painted. I still look at the built-ins and cringe. I have a completely different vision in mind but for now I can focus on the things I do love when I walk through this room. I can enjoy the beautiful barn wood trestle table. I have a clear line of vision to the sliding door that gives me a thrill and I can plan the first step to turning the entire room into a room I’ll drool over…someday. But in the meantime – it’s clean. It’s de-cluttered. It’s no longer overwhelming. It makes me happy.

My Essential Oils Journey

I know. I know. I’m sure you’ve heard about essential oils since there is a big buzz about them every where you turn right now. I remember how that felt…annoying. But then something changed. I thought I’d share a little about how I was introduced.

Last year when I was feeling helpless about my family’s health (some of you often ask about my sister and mom and aunt … and they are doing well, all finished with treatment. My sister is still suffering from some of the effects and has bad days but she’s hanging in there). I want her to feel 100%. Thank you for your prayers! At a time when I was praying for my family, I was introduced to Young Living. Now I’m still armed with prayer first and foremost and although there hasn’t been a need for me personally in the past year, I’d still consider modern medicine (I’m not completely ruling that out for us…yet),  but I do feel like YL essential oils were an answer to my prayers. The timing was perfect. I no longer feel so helpless. I’m on a mission to share because I want the same for others.

My sister 5 mos. post chemo and my cute nephew..her hair is growing back so pretty! Love these two!

Why essential oils? Sure. I knew that most of the products in our home had toxins but we never had a family history of anything serious. They’re approved for sale and use, so what’s the big deal? The respiratory problems I felt when cleaning the bathroom and breathing in cleaners…they disappeared later in the day. The foods we ate…everyone eats, so no big deal, right? The over the counter options…side effects but relief, right? Not quite. When the past three years revealed serious health issues to someone new in my family every single year, it became evident that our environment and what we were consuming are harming us, poisoning us, taking away the good health we were taking for granted. I don’t want this year or any year to be my turn. I don’t want health scares for anyone. Sometimes the little choices we make on a daily basis do have long term consequences. And I don’t want that day to ever arrive and me thinking I wish I would have made changes years ago. Being pro-active started the day someone told me about Young Living and it’s my wish that this blog post serves the same purpose for you, the desire to embrace wellness and take a step that could potentially inspire a stronger you, a happy family and a healthier life-style.

Young Living @diyshowoff

I have a very close-knit family and my wish is for every single one of these faces to live a healthy, happy life!

We’re using essential oils every day and I feel so passionate about sharing with others. To have these on hand is so empowering. There are hundreds of benefits. They’re not just for making your home smell pretty. They’re about embracing wellness, promoting a healthy home and lifestyle. Now we grab an essential oil for minor first aid. Now we’re proactive about boosting our immune system, about maintaining a healthy body and mind, about feeling better and happier, about eliminating the harmful chemicals. I find it interesting that I used to accept and willingly take and use products that had bad long term side effects because they were endorsed on tv (even with disclaimers about the bad stuff!), by those who I felt were appointed to make our well being the priority (turns out I was wrong) or by a professional without a second thought but I’d roll my eyes and get all skeptical when someone brought up natural God-made options. What was I thinking?!

Young Living @diyshowoff

The Premium Starter Kit comes with 11 bottles of essential oils (Peppermint, Thieves, Lemon, Purification, Tea Tree Oil, Lavender, Stress Away, Citrus Fresh, Frankincense, Joy and PanAway), extra samples and a $75 diffuser. Throw in the monthly promotional gifts that come directly from me and you’re paying $150 for a package valued well over $300. You pay HALF that! There’s never any obligation to order more or do anything else. It’s an awesome way to give them a good fair try.

Still feel like too much? It’s worth saving for, it’s worth the investment! Think of how much we spend on beauty products, candles, air fresheners, perfumes, gifts, cleaning supplies, over-the-counter options. I used to purchase a perfume that cost $75 for 3 oz., candles that went for over $20 a jar, over $20 when I felt I was coming down with something from the drugstore. I’d hit the dollar store for cleaning supplies. But expensive or cheap, are any of those really worth the effects of chemicals?

Young Living @diyshowoff

A new grandson…more reason to make healthier choices. I want to be around to see this cutie grow as well as encourage smart decisions, good judgement and a healthy lifestyle.

Feel overwhelmed by information? The best way to understand is to get started. It does get easier, I promise. So how are some ways I’m using them every single day? Equipped with an Essential Oil Pocket Reference, I’m learning to reach for an essential oil first! The Premium Starter kit is the best way to test the oils, to experience an oily lifestyle.

Young Living @diyshowoff

  • I diffuse morning, afternoon and evening. I choose an essential oil that fits our routine. Something happy/clean in the morning (Purification or lemon), something to energizing (En-R-Gee) in the afternoon, something relaxing in the evenings (Lavender). It’s fun making up blends too. I love that I control the strength and the diffuser is amazing. You can see it working the minute you press the start button!
  • I apply Thieves to our feet if we feel we’ve been exposed to or are coming down with something. We add Thieves, lemon and honey to hot water for scratchy throats. We diffuse it if the baby is coming over to purify the air.
  • I drink an ounce of Ningxia Red every day (so yummy) to promote a healthy immune system. If I forget it, I notice it so I know it’s working to give me energy too.
  • My husband applies cedarwood every evening for a good night’s rest (I’ve heard it works for hair regrowth too)! Sometimes he’ll swap it out for Valerian, Rutavala, Lavender, Peace & Calming.
  • I’ve made up my own perfume using jojoba oil with grapefruit, jasmine and ylang ylang…and get so many compliments!
  • I whipped up a batch for something that works for my occasional anxiety…that alone is worth every penny to me. Courage!
  • When a certain someone is noisily ‘sawing logs’ in the bed next to me, an application of Valor or Thyme takes away the disruptive zzzzzz.
  • I clean my counters, bathroom, mirrors, windows, glass top table, appliances and spot clean or bamboo floors with Thieves household cleaner.
  • Deep Relief for when I feel like I’ve been hit by a train.
  • Thieves toothpaste (stop the fluoride!) and a drop of orange essential oil for whitening.
  • Thieves hand sanitizer is a must have!
  • My husband loves Sulfurzyme for his creaky knees and fingers.
  • Thieves or peppermint in the dog’s water for stinky breath.
  • Peace & Calming stops an excessively barking, hyper dog (some children too).
  • Lavender with coconut oil for baby for soothing diaper area and scaly skin/head and after bath/before bed.
  • DiGize for promoting healthy digestion…I use this a lot. It works!
  • Lavender on my thumb where it meets my wrist when I touched a hot oven. A bit of a sting at first then just like it never happened. No scab or scar.
  • Making up handmade gifts such as bath salts, sugar scrubs, lotions, rubs, etc.
  • Adding them to our recipes.

And that’s just a few of the ways we’re using them.

Young Living Distributor #1836762

The business opportunity:  It’s never required but as a wholesale distributor, the opportunity is there. And as I use essential oils, as I see how they’re benefitting those I love, I actually feel guilty if I don’t share. I want others to feel better, to make healthy choices. When I first brought essential oils into our home, it was not my intention to take advantage of the business opportunity at all. I mean really. Who’s ever interested in pursuing a career in network marketing? No one that I know. In this case, it happens naturally. When I started sharing how they’re working for me, it just happened. Others wanted them too. It’s as simple as sharing your member# with others and showing them how to get essential oils for themselves. We all share our favorite book, movie, restaurant and this is so much more important that it’s hard to keep quiet. Not to mention, the opportunity is there. How we’re feeling is always a topic of discussion. And before I knew it, I began to get paychecks that pay for my essential oils, paychecks that support my blog. What an unexpected blessing! Who couldn’t use a little extra cash? Once you see the potential, your goals and dreams change. What felt out of reach is now a real possibility. And as apart of the Oily Family team, you’ll have access to a ton of resources. You’re not left to fend for yourself. Bonus! Being a blogger isn’t necessary – spreading the oily love is as easy as sharing with the people around you. However, if you are a blogger well then, you’d be joining one awesome rock star team! Either way, we’d love to welcome you to our Oily Family!

Striped Gallery Wall

A little cabin fever with sub-zero temps had me looking at areas of our home to “clean” up which lead to painting a striped gallery wall. Strange how my brain works but once I cleared the bookcases (so much dust!), that inspired the idea to dress up the entire area.

What I used:

  • FrogTape® Multi-Surface
  • paint – I used leftover paint from our laundry room. Color is Valspar Mineral Ash. Existing wall color is Benjamin Moore Smoky Taupe.

What I did:

I cleaned the wall above our build in bookcases. I marked where the framed prints hang on the wall then using the level, marked light pencil lines horizontally.

Then I applied the FrogTape.

I used my thumbnail to secure the edges of the FrogTape to the wall in order to get nice crisp paint lines.

DIY striped gallery wall tutorial @diyshowoff

Then simply painted the wall two coats.

DIY striped gallery wall tutorial @diyshowoff

While the second coat was still wet, I removed the FrogTape and let the paint dry.

Then hung up my prints and restyled the bookcases. Paint is such an easy way to create a new look, add some interest and to freshen up the space.

Now to come up with some seating for this area. Stay tuned!

Looking for a (useful and handmade) gift idea? I like to give my nieces and nephews candy-free gifts. Since I’m so in love with essential oils, I think these cute lil’ snuggle bunny heat/cold packs are a nice gift idea. Perfectly soothing. Recipe: Broccoli Cheese Soup with pasta shells

Hosting a small casual party? I seem to be doing that on a weekly basis lately since my new grandson is local one day a week. Sweet baby boy is bait for visits from family & friends, especially during lunch time. I love these visits and the opportunity to spend time with those I love and sometimes, I like to have lunch ready to serve. Most everyone loves broccoli cheese soup as well as mac & cheese, right? How about a combination of the two? This only takes about 30 minutes to prepare. Perfect!

Ingredients I used:

  • 1 box Horizon® Pasta Shells & White Cheddar Cheese
  • 1 lb. bag of organic frozen broccoli (recommended: Earthbound Farms brand)
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter (recommended: Horizon® brand)
  • 1 small chopped onion
  • 1/4 cup organic all purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 4 cups free range chicken broth
  • 2 cups organic half and half (Horizon® brand recommended)
  • pinch of sea salt
  • shredded (Horizon®) cheddar cheese for topping

For more information, visit Horizon®’s website.

Servings: 4-6

Time: approx. 30 minutes.

Directions:

Saute onion in 1 tablespoon of melted butter in large pot. Add two cups of chicken broth and simmer.

Add 2 cups of chicken broth and half of frozen broccoli to food processor and puree.

Add chicken broth/broccoli to onions/large pot and stir over medium heat for 3-4 minutes.

In bowl, mix cheese packet from Horizon® Pasta Shells & White Cheddar Cheese, 1/4 cup of flour, 1/4 cup of melted butter and 2 cups of half and half.

Slowly add the half and half mixture to pot and whisk to mix over medium high heat 2 minutes.

Add Horizon® Pasta Shells & White Cheddar Cheese and remaining broccoli. Add a pinch or two of sea salt. Boil 10-12 minutes or until macaroni is done.

Remove from heat, top with shredded cheddar cheese and serve.

It’s so good! Day 2/leftovers may require the addition of more chicken broth/etc. because those shells soak it all in.

Since we’re considering more organic choices, I was pleased to learn about all of the Horizon® products. Looking for more recipes?
