Easy DIY Summer Cooling Spray Recipe & Tutorial

It is HOT out there! Our local forecast promises a HOT and humid week. No worries! I’m going to share my favorite way to keep cool and chill out with an easy DIY cooling spray.

Reasons you need to make cooling spray this NOW for you and your family members.

• It’s hot outside! As a result, you might be feeling over-heated.
• If you’re hot, you’re sweating. Yuck. Doesn’t hurt to spritz on some good smelling lavender and peppermint! lol
• If you’re overheated, chances are – you’re cranky. A ‘lil lavender for calming is going to help!

DIY Keep Cool / Chill Out Spray

Supplies I use:

I included some affiliate links.

• 2 oz. amber glass spray bottle (or adjust recipe according to the size spray bottle you have on hand)

• Witch hazel

• Distilled water
• Peppermint essential oil*
• Lavender essential oil*

* I only use and recommend Young Living essential oils! Quality matters!

What I do:

I fill the bottle half way with witch hazel, then the rest of the way with distilled water (to where the bottle starts to curve, NOT to the bottle neck or completely full, leave room for essential oils. I then add 4 drops each of Lavender and Peppermint. No worries if you get an extra drop or two, no worries if you’re running low and only have 3 drops. The nice thing about DIY is you control the strength and can alter the recipe as needed.

Lavender Essential Oil

The Swiss army knife of essential oils! SO many amazing benefits! Off the top of my head – supporting healthy skin, so a good choice for a body spray. AND as most of us know…relaxing and calming. So hot = cranky pants, add lavender = CHILL (CALM).

Peppermint Essential Oil

Another good one with so many benefits. It supports a healthy digestive system, soothing after exercise (dilute and apply topically), etc. But one other benefit is … it’s COOLING! For all things that cause me to overheat, I keep this bottle handy. Peppermint = CHILL (COOLING).

Tip:

It is not necessary at all, but I store it in the refrigerator to give it an extra cooling boost!

Easy to grab and go, throw it in your purse or backpack. Having a cookout or going on a picnic in the park? Toss it in the cooler.

How I use it:

Shake and spritz myself, then spray the back of my neck.

Head’s Up:

Avoid your eyes! Peppermint stings! IF you do get it in your eyes, grab some coconut or a carrier oil, some fatty liquid and flush. Water will not help.

When I use it:

When temps are up, summer heat! Outdoor events, going to the park, going on a walk, run or hike, doing yard work, working outdoors, when air conditioning isn’t available or isn’t working, when the power is out and the a/c and fans aren’t an option, picnics/BBQs, at the pool.

‘Tis the season to be jolly! And healthy! And if you’re wondering where to even start with a healthier lifestyle, here’s my story. As you know, I’m a DIY girl. No fear about diving in and giving things a try. So doing the same when it comes to wellness made sense to me. This is what got me started, raised awareness and made a difference in my lifestyle:

Is what you put into your body important to you? I‘m pretty sure by now that you’ve heard a lot about essential oils, right? ::groan:: and ::eye roll:: <— that was my initial reaction too! lol! What IS all the fuss about? Let me share it with you as short and sweet as I can why essential oils are all the rage for me personally. (Some affiliate links below.)

I am so forver grateful someone shared with me: When I first heard, I thought it was some temporary popular trend and I tuned it out. la-la-la-la-la!!!!!! But nearly 4 years ago on a blogging retreat, two of my blog buddies shared essential oils with me…I have a bit of an issue with traveling which causes some uncomfortable side effects (TMI! you don’t want to know) and the essential oil shared made all the difference! Oh.my.good.NESS! If it worked for that, how else? In my world at the time, my mom and sister were going through treatments for breast cancer. I was ready and open to making healthier choices. Baby steps. Just starting somewhere.

You guys, I’ve had 6 family members diagnosed with cancer in SIX years! I felt so helpless!

Essential oils have been around FOREVER and I know that lately they’re ALL THE HYPE but I believe it’s because word of mouth spreads faster these days via social media. They aren’t new. And specifically, Young Living has been around going on 30 years! I was still practically a child (and I’m a grandma now!). That’s not anything bright and shiny and just born. Why haven’t we heard about them before? Why didn’t I know that I could grab an essential oil for relief or health support in so many ways without the synthetic chemicals or side effects? The answer to that is an involved blog post for another day but just because I never knew, doesn’t mean it isn’t so. Essential oils were one of the first medicines! I’m learning so much and I’m so thankful that my friends DID share with me because it’s made a HUGE difference in our lifestyle, our health, our finances and our home.

Cleaning favorites:

We love Thieves Household Cleaner for ALL of the surfaces in our home from floors to countertops to stainless steel appliances including our zero radius kitchen sink to upholstery (it’s recommended to always perform a spot test), windows and mirrors (no streaking!) and bathrooms, yardsale finds and the baby’s toys. I love that it’s in concentrate forms. Snag a few dollar store spray bottles. We have a ratio for every day use and one mixed up for heavy degreasing.

Who knew you could have a hand soap addiction? Back in the day I’d hit the sales and stock up never realizing that the ingredients in those “botanical” scents were chemicals and not the real thing! Yikes! I love the lather and scent of this Thieves Foaming Hand Soap. Gentle but effective! There’s even savings on the refill!

This is another good one. Oh my gosh! Nobody likes dirty fruit and vegetables. Don’t you just love fresh veggies from the garden and shopping the farmer’s markets this time of year? Have you caught any of the videos circling social media or YouTube about how filthy they can be? ::shiver:: I LOVE a good harvest! But please bathe those beauties before eating!

This is another big one for us. We’ve always used unscented detergents when it comes to laundry since one of us gets itchy. lol Sensitive skin calls for products without the synthetic fragrances. Thieves Laundry Soap is all we use now. I love that it’s a concentrate and with an energy efficient machine, I personally only use half the recommended measurement and our clothes are clean! DIY Laundry Boost

Okay, so I may be a bit of a germ-o-phobe when it comes to touching public door handles, menus, highchairs, shopping carts…you name it, I’m not wanting to touch it! Thieves Waterless Hand Purifier is always always in my purse. And if you’re with me, I’ll share a squirt with you too! It’s not drying like the ones I used to carry and it has a refreshing peppermint scent! I share the love and everyone always raves about it. I also like having the large bottle with the pump for picnic tables and gatherings. So handy!

Oh! And that bar soap? So soft with a creamy lather. Every one of the bar soaps from Young Living feel good on my skin!

Another for ‘on the go’? Thieves wipes! There’s a fabulous DIY recipe floating around as well and I love making those up too, especially in place of the tub of toxic wipes I used to use daily. The spray is also great to have on hand. Public restrooms can be so…so nasty!

More treasures:

Yes! You will find each and every one in our home. A clean home doesn’t stop at cleanliness. Clean ingredients. If they’re touching your skin or being inhaled, your products need them!

^^^ Just supplied my dad with a supply of the cough drops. His words…”NOW THAT’s a cough drop!”. Those and the lozenges are powerful!!!…great to have on hand for airports, etc. where you never know what’s floating around in the air. They’re strong and so good!
