Wooden Candy Corn Accents

We’re making progress on the grape arbor/gazebo, recycled brick path and patio AND a laundry room makeover and in between those bigger DIY projects, I’m having fun with some stress-free easy DIY. I just saw the cutest little candy corn bean bags somewhere which inspired this project…a scrap wood version.

Materials:

  • Scrap 1 x 6 wood
  • FrogTape®
  • Sandpaper
  • Craft paint

I used the miter saw to cut three triangle shapes from my scrap wood, then sanded the edges.

Candy Corn Fact: My DIY version goes from orange to yellow to white but the official candy corn striping starts with yellow on the bottom, orange in the middle and white on top.

I taped off each section using FrogTape®, rubbing my thumbnail along the edge of the tape. I started at the bottom with orange craft paint. After I applied a second coat, I removed the FrogTape®. Let dry and move on to the middle yellow section following the same steps, finishing with white craft paint on the pointy part of the triangle.  Allow drying time between each color.

Aren’t they cute?

I think these would make a great fall hostess gift tied up with ribbon.

Fall Chevron DIY

Earlier this week, I shared my fall home tour. Did you happen to see the DIY chevron “Fall in Love” plaque on the mantel in my family room?

Tutorial:

Materials:

  • Scrap wood
  • FrogTape® Chevron Shape Tape
  • Paint (I used glossy Krylon cherry red spray paint, turquoise DecoArt Americana Desert Turquoise acrylic craft paint and a gold spray paint)
  • Fall stencil (I created/cut a fall vinyl stencil using my Silhouette. Leaf damask design from Silhouette America online store.)
  • Martha Stewart Crafts Wood Stain

Here’s what I did:

1. I sanded the edges of my scrap wood (left over from a shelf DIY).

2. I spray painted my wood plaque red and let dry for about an hour.

3. Starting at the top of my plaque, I applied the FrogTape® Chevron Shape Tape. Cut to size, remove half of the wax paper backing, place Shape Tape, remove other half of the wax paper backing and smooth into place.

4. and just kept adding rows by placing the zig zag design exactly as my first piece and just eye-balling the distance. To get a chevron pattern, line up the zig zag.

5. Using my thumbnail, I made sure the edges of the Shape Tape were secure.

6. Then painted my chevron using turquoise craft paint. I did three coats to completely cover the red paint underneath.

Tip: Elevate the wood using the tape container to paint sides.

7. I peeled away the Shape Tape after the third coat of craft paint while the paint was still wet and let it dry.

8. Once dry, I sanded the the entire plaque for a bit of distressing.

9. Then brushed on the wood stain, let it sit for a few minutes then wiped it off for an aged look.

10. Once everything was dry, I applied my vinyl stencil and taped the edges of my wood plaque with FrogTape® Multi-surface.

11. Then spray painted the design using gold spray paint.

12. Remove tape and vinyl stencil.

It perfectly coordinates with my red/aqua fall mantel display…

Falling for Vintage – Fall Home Tour

It may not feel like fall in your neck of the woods but the shorter days, chilly mornings, garden harvests, cooler evenings all point to autumn’s arrival here in western PA which means preparation for the countdown to my hibernation. I’m all set to warm things up with some fall decorating.  Fall is such a blessed time of year and I love being all cozy and comfy and more than any other time of year. Fall decorating helps me with the transition of summer fun to Christmas celebration.

7-Vintage-Fall-House-Tours

Ready for a little touch of vintage in my fall home tour? Let’s take a look around! It is early in the season so I have to tell you things will definitely be tweaked and moved around before I’m completely satisfied with it just in time to pack it all away.

Vintage Fall Home Tour at DIYShowOff

Last week, I kicked off the fall decorating season by adding some new accents atop my vintage chicken coop.

and a faux wheat stack with my old globe vignette…

The kitchen is all ready for fall on the top shelf of our open pantry. This pumpkin weighs in at a little over 16 lbs. according to the vintage scale. And a faux fall bouquet in a vintage tin adds more balance.

Our kitchen island consists of an old vintage dresser and the centerpiece is a basket filled with mums, purple cabbages, heather and squash. I added a vintage vice for a rustic touch.

On our dining room table, vintage bottles display dried cotton sticks and feathers. The table runner is simply wrapping paper.

The mantel in our family room is a bit of a challenge with the colorful curtains but gold, red and aqua including a vintage tea tin and blue mason jar paired with coordinating vases create a fun autumn theme.

Even the guest room whispers “welcome fall”…

And because the days are still nice enough to enjoy fresh fall air, I spruced up the patio daybed with new pillows and some pretty mums…displayed in a vintage something or other I confiscated from the barn.

Not only do I love the warmth that accompanies fall decorating, it’s fall scents that set the scene for a warm and cozy home, isn’t it? Pumpkins, cinnamon, wood burning, home cooking.
