How the heck do you get ready for the holidays when your home is under DIY construction and chaos? Well, I’m not sure but I can tell you how it’s going for me. When I have a lot going on, I’m a list maker. Seeing what needs done and checking things off helps keep me on track. Otherwise, you know something’s going to get forgotten. This year, with being a part of the Lowe’s Creative Ideas team, Lowe’s has played a large part in halting my holiday home procrastination.
Here is how my list goes:
- First priority is to finish up existing projects like bigger tasks so that I can breathe, relax and enjoy the rest of the year. So, I’m pushing to get some projects like our window installation, open pantry makeover and laundry room makeover complete. You may not see those makeovers until January, but my deadline for finishing them is a real life holiday home tour on 12/7.
- Cleaning and de-cluttering. In order to prep for digging out all of those bins filled with holiday decorating goodness, I need to start with a clean slate. That means piling up existing decorative accents (to be stored in the empty Christmas bins) and dusting, vacuuming, sweeping, scrubbing.
- Re-arranging the furniture. I decorate three trees for Christmas so moving furniture around to make room is one of my favorite parts of decorating. I love a fresh new perspective from the usual arranged room, don’t you?
- This one I usually start the weekend after Thanksgiving: Hauling out the Christmas decor bins and decorating! Pump up the volume on those Christmas tunes and deck the halls!
- Sending out Christmas cards to family and friends.
- Holiday shopping. I’ve started a little shopping the past month or two but this is the time I take to get it done. I love giving gifts! Do you wrap as you go or pile it all up or wrap all gifts at once? I love to be organized about it and wrap it all at once. Blasting the Christmas music in the background, singing along, ribbons and bows and paper and scissors and tape all within reach. It’s a huge wrap-fest! A party for one.
- Holiday baking. I don’t do much baking but hoping to change that a little this year. I’d love to have a variety of cookies to go with my hot cocoa. {chevron wooden table runner tutorial}
Call me crazy but I’m {unrealistically?} optimistic! Check back with me next weekend and I may be in a panic. Because #1 on my list is a doozy. But if I don’t have everything crossed off my list this week, I do have next week before Thanksgiving and the weekend after to fall back on. Having a deadline puts the pressure on to get things wrapped up…and I’m not even talking about the presents yet!
A few weeks’ back when I first started thinking about getting my home ready for the holidays by following the Lowe’s Holiday Showcase, I had the opportunity to play around with some decorating. Just enough to get me excited to get the projects done in order to get to the reward:
…really decorating for Christmas.
That was a couple of weeks ago. Remember when I said I’m working on completing some bigger projects and a house under DIY construction? This is my dining room table now…{keeping it real!}
Yikes! Not for long. According to my list, I’ll be clearing that table off today! Hurray!
I hosted a small get together with family and friends and we discussed holiday decorating and plans.
Putting together a list this time of year really helps keep me on track as well as ensures I don’t forget something with so much going on.
THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED. Winner is JD who commented: Paint! I’ve had paint chips up in the bedroom and bathroom for months now, and we have a nursery to do now too! Congratulations, JD! You’ll be notified by email!

Oh Thank goodness I thought i was the only one going thru remodel chaos and trying to Holiday Decorate at the same time too! Everything is just breathtaking and Gorgeous! Loving the colors..well its just Stunning.
Getting ready for the holidays is simpler for me since I’m not hosting at Christmas this year. But I start off the same as you do, I clean the heck out of my place first, then lay out ever Christmas decoration in my living room. Next I sort through things that need to be tossed, recycled or donated, all the while sorting my ornaments into categories (glass, silver, gold, white or other colors). I find this helps me decorate the tree / house in a more balanced way, appropriately dispersing the colors, metals and whites all around my small condo. I also love using ‘FlyLadys’ tips for Cruising through the Holidays. She provides me with tips for decorating, organizing and sticking to my budget during the holidays. Thanks for asking – you’re helping me get in the holiday mood. As far as the $50 from Lowes goes, I’d use it to purchase loc VOC paint for my kitchen. That would be a really nice bonus for my budget. 🙂
Lists…… yes, have lists on top of lists….. and then I make a new list…… somewhere, somehow I keep remembering what I desperately need. Okay, that one is way too long.
I would definitely use the certificate to buy paint and primer to paint all three of my exterior doors….. that have NEVER been painted and I am now desperate and not sure I can even do it now that the weather has got too cool to leave the doors open………. YIKES!
Hi, if I won the money to use at Loews, I would get the things that would allow me to be ready for the holidays and make it comfortable for my family and friends plus they would love it and want to get ideas from your site as well as shopping at Loews .
Sounds like you will be busy! Your dining room photo made me giggle…been there, done that! My husband and I were constantly moving stuff from one room to the next and back again so we could work on our construction/remodel.
I think I have my own parking spot at Lowe’s, I’m there so often! Fifty smackers would help replace the sad little medicine cabinet in our master bath.
This might sounds odd, but I would use the fifty dollars towards buying lamps for my new place. My apartment has the worst overhead lighting and I have been on a fruitless search for affordable, but nice, simple lamps.
I would use the money to buy paint to replace the broken blinds in our master bedroom. It would be nice to let in a little more sunshine.
I pinned this on Pinterest to hare it.
I’d get a new pendant lamp for our entryway!
I shared on my FB page and emailed a couple friends and told my boyfriend about it…..
LOL, love the mess on your dining room table because that’s what my house looks like right now too!
I’m in desperate need of a Christmas tree and lights.
I would put the money toward a lighted palm tree. I know it sounds silly but we live in the desert and I would keep it up all year long.
I would spend the lowe’s card on spray paint
Oh my word, I’m glad I’m not the only one! My house is under DIY construction chaos too! I actually just finished (and posted) my pantry but we are still working on construction and next is ripping up the flooring to lay the new wood floors. Meanwhile I’m hosting Thanksgiving so it might have to make sure my guest keep their shoes on so they don’t get splinters from the subflooring! 🙂 Craziness!!
As far as the gift card from Lowes, I could use it 1000 ways! Paint for the walls we just built, paint for the ceiling (that for some reason the old owners painted green!), a big rug for the living room once the wood floors have been laid, the list goes on and on. 🙂
Happy Thanksgiving!
Anna
I would use the $50 to go towards buying a fridge for our first home which we close on on the 18th of December 🙂
Ooooh!! I’d put it toward some wood to make a new bed frame 🙂 Oooor a drop cloth, paint and poly to make an area rug!
I don’t even know where to begin, but I’m sure once I got there, it would be no problem! (Christmas, projects, paint-where do I begin?!)
I shared this on my Facebook page and told friends around me about your page 🙂
No doubt about it, I’d could use $50 to replace our Christmas lights. I’ve lost track of how many years they’ve been around! Starting to look a little snaggle-toothed 😀
I just bought a new house and it needs some work. I would get tools and a rake and some mulch.
light fixture for my foyer-or maybe paint. I want to paint all my interior doors blue!
I would use it to buy planks for a wall in my dining room. I ripped the wallpaper down and I’m ready to get planking!
I have a fence to repair & lighting to get in the barn so I need some posts & lighting components.
Always could use more lights. Never can have enough Christmas lights!
i would love to get some real greens this season. thanks so much!

I could spend it so easy at Lowes! 🙂 i’d probably buy wood
I just messed up on a buffet table I’m building…so I’d use the $50 to buy some new 1×12 boards!
If I had a $50 gift card from Lowes right now I would purchase a huge canvas painter’s drop cloth and some Purdy brushes. I have an on going project using the drop cloths and you can never have too many brushes!
I just bought some Valspar at Lowe’s for our Living Room but there are many, many more rooms to paint. I would spend the money on paint for our home.
I start getting ready for the holidays by bringing up all the decorations from the basement and going through them to see which ones made it through the year and didn’t get ruined by the mildew ( we have an old farm house and through the years I have lost a lot of decorations because of mildew I have packed them in containers and tried everything) It is ok because I get new stuff that I can buy every year…
This year I would like to take the $50 and purchase paint for my living room it could use a new paint job…
Lowe’s so many things to choose from however right now I need to replace both bathrooms with new toliets, so I would probably use the $50.00 toward that purchase or I need a cover up for my outside furniture. Thanks

Love the natural style mantel. It’s very charming!!
wreaths on the windows is the topper for me!
If I spent $50 at Lowe’s at this very moment it would be for a dear friend of mine who finally has a place of his own to get back into woodworking. He’s missed this dearly for many years and unfortunately at the current time is out of work. He can’t afford to buy wood for all those Christmas presents he has in his mind. I’d buy him quality lumber from Lowe’s.
Your efforts are certainly admirable. I started staging our home for sale last March while my husband accepted a transfer in another state 10 hours away. We purchased a new (old) home in May & started total rip-out/renovations in June, storing everything we owned in the garage and moving from floor to floor as renovations progressed. The week before Thanksgiving we were both hit by the worst case of flu either of us could ever remember experiencing. As an interior designer must sometimes choose between fashion or function, I chose sanity over everything. Twelve months later, every muscle in my body has been twisted & stretched more than an egg full of Silly Putty in 1965 but my hands have taken the brunt of it so of everything on my list to Santa, I’m really hoping for a new staple gun with some power behind it to finish upholstering our bed. We’re almost there 🙂
Thats a hard question! I know what I’d like but I probably should replace the lighting over the bathroom sink. Which would be nice!
I shared on Facebook, thanks for the chance, hope you get everything done!

We’re a military family so moving is a big part of our life. I love getting to go to new places! What I don’t love is when my belongings become others belongings or just lost during the moves. I went out to the garage 2 days ago to start pulling in specific Christmas decor and realized 2 boxes were gone 🙁 So, I’d use the money to buy new ornaments/ribbon/outdoor decor to decorate with!!

Ours just received a shipment of very fresh healthy looking Norfolk pines and I’d like to add one to our DR for the holidays and hopefully it would survive longer … and they had a nice assortment of holiday decor including – surprisingly to me, some nice table runners that I think could be also used to DIY pillows and other cute items. See, I’ve already spent over the $50 again!
The gift card prize would go toward a belt sander! I have a torn ligament in my thumb, and sanding by hand is not only painstaking, but painful! I’d love to finish all my fun little restoration projects in a fraction of the time 🙂

If I won, I need to make a wooden photo backdrop. Not exactly the biggest project around here, but it does need to be done!
I would finish my kitchen back splash. I sooooo want to get it done 🙂
I would spend getting a blow up Christmas ornament to put in my yard for my grandkids to enjoy!!
We are remodeling the downstairs portion of our hous. The granite was just installed a week ago. We still need tile for the backsplash, flooring and paint. Lowe’s is our go to store for everything! $50 sure would come in handy… 🙂

Toward a new dishwasher . In dire need!
I would spend it on trim to finish out the wainscoating on a cabinet dividing or entry from the dining (now playroom). The cabinet now holds toys.
I want to build a floor to ceiling headboard.
I would use the lowes gift card to help re-do my kitchen, right now it is a wreck. Painting walls, pulling up old tile floor and replacing if i ever make up my mind what i want!!! Also replacing old butcher block counters. (i think i’m the last human to still have those)
I would buy a blow up character for my new grandbaby
Just finishing up redoing my kitchen. I’d finish up with molding before I start decorating.

I would LOVE a gift card to Lowe’s to help decorate my house. The love of my life moved in with me in February. Currently, I am trying to pay bills off so we can start planning for our wedding as well as our future together. (Despite being behind a mortgage payment and I havent even paid this months yet. 🙁 I am so sad to think that I will not be able to spoil my love the way he deserves.) We have also had two miscarriages since April and could both use a cheerful, happy holiday.
I would finish up my children’s bathroom. I’m missing tp holder, towel holder, New hinges, and bead board to finish up ceiling.
I would buy the Christmas decorations that Im missing. I just had a major surgery and a 2 week hospital stay. Having to stay home with little ones has really hit financially hard for us, it was close before financially. But now were scrambling to pay layaway, bills, food,.so the christmas decorayions that got destroyed in the barn that was messed up in the midwestern storms last week need replaced. I have 3 boys, 2 under 12 who LOVE to decorate for the holidays. I would use the gift card to make sure they had Christmas decorations and stockings to hang.
Good luck to all who enter, and enjoy the holidays with family and friends!!
Power tools, I’d buy more….a girl can never have enough!
I’d buy a new light fixture for our bathroom. It needs to be updated!

I’d buy a new rug.
I would put this money toward replacing some ceiling tile that was damaged from a leak.
I would buy a new faucet to replace my 1976 “Brady Bunch Era” one. Thanks for the opportunity!
I would buy some flowering plants to put in the Mexican pots we’re using to anchor our hot tub gazebo!
I would spend the money to complete my bedroom DIY projects! Finally!

I would fix up our master bathroom! My fiancé and I bought a home in February and have been doing our best to fix it up without breaking the bank (since we have been planning our wedding… We get married next weekend!) we have taken down the 80’s wallpaper and have started to mud up the walls, and put down peal and stick tile.. But that’s it! I’d love to paint and get nice mirrors and light fixtures! This gift card would be a great wedding gift to us!! 🙂
And I have shared this on my Facebook!
Thanks!!!!
I’d buy some paint to freshen up the girls’ bedroom.
$50 would be great – I am making most of my Christmas gifts this year and the gift card would help me with supplies needed to complete a wall of art – wood for plaques and paint to name a few
I would most likely put the $50 towards a tool to keep using for my projects.
Prepping for thanksgiving dinner with my 13 year old grandson is staying over and helping cook. The household carbon monoxide detector started beeping. It has never done that before and having a gas stove and two gas fireplaces in the house I immediately stopped to check it out. It continued beeping after I changed the batteries, reset it and placed it outside in fresh air. I read on Kidde’s website it was an end of life beep as the unit was 6 years old. I would use the $50. gift card from Lowes to replace this CO detector in my home, it is a necessary item to have. Thank you.
Hello Roeshel! I just shared your facebook DIY Show off post on my wall so others have a chance to enter also. Thanks again!
