You’ve probably read several recaps about the awesome Haven Conference and mine is very similar, if not the same and I can’t NOT share. I seriously am so glad that I got over my anxiety and just went.
Haven was a highlight of the year type of experience for me. Blog conferences have never been in my budget {so many home improvements/so little $} but when I heard about the Haven Conference and how there would be sessions that would interest me (blogging and DIY) and most importantly that I’d have the opportunity to meet so many DIY blog friends in person, I made it a top priority. I can’t believe I was almost way too shy and nervous to go.
My favorite part was transforming e-friends in to real life friends. The best part for me is that I met so many amazing people. Bloggers, non bloggers, men, women. I was nervous. I was star struck. But every person there was super friendly. I recognized faces and blog names. Many times, it was like seeing a long time real life friend. I have “visited” many of their homes, read about their lives and even featured some of their DIY projects after all. It was a DIY reunion and everyone seemed to enjoy picking up their friendships were we left off in blogging earlier in the week. There’s nothing better than meeting a group of friends who share the same interests. There’s always something to talk about!
I’d like to thank the Haven team for organizing such a successful amazing event: Southern Hospitality, Kristin, Centsational Girl, Home Stories A2Z, Miss Mustard Seed, Beneath My Heart, Thrifty Decor Chick, Just a Girl. Their hard work was evident and they put together the best first blog conference dedicated to our favorite topics: DIY home improvement, decorating and blogging.
John & Sherry from Young House Love were the keynote speakers and had us hooked and laughing. They’re hilarious, such an adorable couple and were the perfect start to a dream come true event. Like most long time bloggers, I’ve “e-known” them from the start and I got to introduce myself but as you can imagine, there wasn’t a moment someone didn’t want to meet and talk with them and there was certainly no time to pose for a picture or talk for long.
I didn’t have the chance to attend all of the sessions but the ones I did were so interesting, informative and fun! The speakers were so smart and so helpful.

I didn’t take many pictures of the event in action and I didn’t have a chance to take a photo with everyone I met and believe it or not I didn’t get to meet everyone I wanted to meet either. I missed meeting some blog friends (so sad about that!) and even some of the sponsors. There was just so much packed into such a short time. Here are some of the friends I met, proof that these blog friends are real people: (if you’re pictured here, yes you have permission to borrow the picture!)
I was so excited to meet my friend, Rashon {Mr. GoodWill Hunting}! (Can’t wait for I Heart Thrifting Day coming up 7/7). As always, he was charming, hilarious and shared some awesome thrifting tips. I couldn’t wait to meet him and attended his session first thing, hanging on every word. 🙂
Me with Gina from The Shabby Creek Cottage. We did get to spend a lot of time talking and I have a feeling it’s the start of a lifelong friendship…
At the Picket Fence! Heather, me & Vanessa. I got to dine with Vanessa and talk about our lives, our families and our DIY. She’s lovely and her sister, Heather had me laughing so hard I was crying. These two sisters are such an inspiration!
Julia from Hooked on Houses and me. I’ve been hooked on Julia and her blog for years.
Ange {The Blooming Hydrangea}, KariAnne {Thistlewood Farms} and me. Both of these beautiful ladies were a hoot and so sweet!
Me with Becky from Organizing Made Fun. Becky’s always been an inspiration with so much helpful advice and meeting her was a treat!
Me and Beth from Unskinny Boppy. Beth and I have been friends from The Nest before blogging and it was super sweet to meet her finally!
Me, Brittany {Pretty Handy Girl} and Jessica {Decor Aventures}:
Me with Carmel at Our Fifth House…
Ange and me again…
Me with Cassie from Primitive and Proper. Cassie has an amazing talent with painting furniture (my go to blog for advice and beautiful furniture inspiration and fellow DIY’er at the DIY Club)…
Gail {My Repurposed Life} and me – so happy to finally meet! Our email/blog friendship is now real life! Woo hoo!
Deneen from Dreaming in Color and me…she is so friendly!
Sweet Deb from Bungalow with me:
Dusty (All Things G&D), Amanda (Serenity Now) and me:
Me with Ana White. I’ve admired Ana’s building skills from her Knock Off Decor days. Ana – if you’re ever in the Pittsburgh area, you have a place to stay (of course I may put you to work, but that’s a DIY girl’s idea of fun, right? Spa day to follow!).
Gail, me and Katie (half of the husband/wife team from Sew Woodsy). Katie and her husband were some awesome lucky winners at the conference!
Lesli (My Old Country House) and me. Not only is Lesli a super talented artist, she’s now my real-life friend. 🙂
Tonya (Love of Family & Home), me and Beth from Unskinny Boppy:
Me with Miss Charming from Charming Zebra. Great smile, great new friend.
I met Laura from Top This Top That – beautiful inside and out and I’m so happy we had the chance to meet!
And Laura from Finding Home Online is super model tall, gorgeous and so sweet:
Ellen, me and Vicki – maybe someday bloggers who were attending a fun girls’ trip. They called themselves “blog stalkers”. We had a great time chatting over lunch.
Me and Miriam from HomeTalk.
Me with Todd {we met last year here} from Shaw Floors HGTV Home:
Why I didn’t get pictures with Karah, flat Kelly or Debbie, Sherry & John, Layla & Kevin, Sarah, Maury, Jocelyn, Linda, JamieLyn, Lisa, Andrea, Kim, Sheila, Pamela, Vivienne, Kerry, Kelly and so many more friends…because it was that crazy of social/learning and we were too excited saying “hi” or didn’t find each other. 🙁 Next time!
There’s a picture of me with Traci over at Beneath My Heart. Isn’t she a doll? She is a sweetheart in real life too!
Thanks to Brittany for sharing this picture.
Front: Sandra {Sawdust and Paperscraps}, Roeshel (Me!) {DIY Showoff}, Brittany {Pretty Handy Girl}
Middle: Chris {Just a Girl}, Myra {My Blessed Life}, Marian {Miss Mustard Seed}, Stacy {Not Just a Housewife}, Wendy {The Shabby Nest}, Traci {Beneath My Heart}.
Back: Gina {Shabby Creek Cottage}, Beckie {Infarrantly Creative}, Beth {Home Stories A2Z}, Rhoda {Southern Hospitality}, Sarah {Thrifty Décor Chick}, Kate {Centsational Girl}
I swear I wore about 7 outfits in 3 days out of the 50 (slight exaggeration but I had no idea what to wear to a blog conference!) that I managed to squeeze into my carry on but you can tell from the pictures above that I only had my camera out for a small amount of time.
I was way to shy to play the part of paparazzi and not expert enough to have my camera settings correct in changing lighting. And it’s HARD for me to keep bugging others to use my camera to take my picture…ya know?
And the awesome sponsors had fun interactive booths and amazing giveaways including a swag bag packed full of DIY related goodies! Special thanks to: FrogTape, Purdy, Shaw Floors/HGTV Home, Home Depot, Apartment Guide, HomeTalk, Ryobi, Kreg, Minwax, Rustoleum, Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, PureBond, Oreck, Royal Design Studios, 3M Tekk, Bondo, Homes.com, Moen, Mirror Mate, Fish Window Cleaning and Mail Chimp.
Here I am with the Purdy team after winning the amazing (OMGosh!) $1000 worth of Purdy products {thanks to Rhoda for drawing my number!}:
(I also won a Home Depot gift basket! I told you it was an awesome couple of days!)
Meeting others who share my DIY and blogging interests made for a great time! I left there feeling energized, empowered, motivated and inspired and can’t wait to dive into my next DIY project and to see my friends again. 🙂
See more Haven 2012 Conference recaps at Southern Hospitality.
Great recap Roeshel! Lots of great pics! I didn’t take any–well, a few. hahaha
I’m not much for whipping out my camera in a crowd.
so happy I got to finally meet you!
gail
Aw shucks…what great pictures! I am so glad you got to go and have a great time too!!
Roeshel – you are adorable and such a great blog friend! I’m so happy to have met you! You are so LUCKY to have won so many prizes, too! It’s probably good I didn’t win anything since I had to fly home. Now when I read your blog, I feel even more connected to you!

Organizing Made Fun
What a wonderful time you had, and thanks for making me sooo jealous…I mean, thanks for making me feel like I was there with you! 😉
You were at the top of my list of awesome people I wanted to meet at Haven! (So sweet and stylish, too.). I’ve always loved your blog but now I’m even a bigger fan. I really enjoyed meeting you, Roeshel!
Looks like loads of fun. Loved seeing you with all these bloggers who I read all the time. Isn’t it amazing what good friends we make through this….because we all have so much in common.
Go you winning lady! So glad you had a great time. My goal for next year… go to my 1st conference too. I can’t wait!
It was so nice to meet you!!! You are just as cute and sweet in person as you are on your blog! I’m loving that polka dot dress you had on! I’m glad you got over your nerves and came. I was so nervous too but now for next year we’ll all know each other 🙂
Roeshel, it was wonderful to meet! You are one of my blog idols! I am so glad I went to Haven, it’s surreal meeting awesome bloggers like you. Congratulations on winning that Purdy and Home Depot baskets!
Have a great week,
Debbie
You got an awesome amount of pictures! I feel like a total photography failure because I didn’t get a pic with you and so many others I was so happy to meet. Your are every bit as sweet, genuine and just down right lovely in person as I’d imagined you’d be. And by far, the cutest dressed. I want to hire you to style me for next year … and then we’ll definitely have to get a pic!! I’m so thrilled to have shared our first blog conference together. 🙂
Great pictures. I’ve never been to a blogging conference. Like you, I suppose, they’ve never been on my budget. Looks like you had a fantastic time. It makes me think that I should really make the effort to attend one.
Hey, Roeshel, it was so great to see you again & I only wish I had had more time to spend with all of you, getting to know so many wonderful bloggers. There just wasn’t enough time to do it all. You were looking adorable the whole time & you got some great pics. So glad you came to Haven!! xoxo
Roeshel – I so wish I could have gone but so glad to read your recap. It looks like a lot of fun and you are such a beauty, inside and out.
Laura – why didn’t we get a picture?! And I wish we had had more time to chat. I knew I had to keep the “Lauras” straight and I still messed up! That’s what happens when you work on a post past bed time. But I am so happy that we had the chance to at least meet and until we have a chance to meet again and talk more, I look forward to staying in touch and sharing through our blog commenting, projects and emails. 🙂
Hi Roeshel! I was so sad we didn’t meet but maybe next year!! Wonderful wrap up of the conference — it was a life and blog-changing experience for me. Happy I’ve found you online so now I can follow along. 🙂
I was so glad to finally meet you in person! I hate that I didn’t get a picture with you, or get to spend more time with you. I only got a few pictures- I think I was so star-struck, I felt embarrassed to ask for pictures with everyone.
it was so awesome to meet you in person finally!!!! you are stunning… and i am slightly envious of your hair. 🙂
here’s to continued friendship!
Hi Roeshel! Such a fun recap! I really enjoyed reading. Glad you had a great time!
What an awesome recap!! You got so many great pictures!! So glad to have met you at Haven!! Looking forward to next year!!
Thank you for including me and Ellen in your Haven update and for making us feel so welcome in the blog world! I hope to get the chance to see you again at the next conference!
Awesome recap, Roeshel! You took such great pictures. It was awesome to finally meet you! Thanks for the shout out 🙂
Looks like you had a great time! Looking forward to next year 🙂
You did a much better job of taking pictures than I did! I think I took a few on Wednesday night and then again on Friday! FAIL! So glad you enjoyed it!!!
Looks like a blast! I would love to go to Haven someday. Inspiring post!
Roeshel,
Thanks for sharing and it looks like you met so many fabulous bloggers and “blog stalkers” alike! And congrats on the big win!
My “sources” tell me you are every bit as sweet and inspiring and supportive as you come across on your blog … and your emails!
Next year for sure I hope to meet you … and will hunt you down with camera in hand!
🙂
Linda
Great pictures. Thanks so much for sharing. Hugs, marty
Wow!!! Looks like fun!! I’m going to have to take the rest of the day off so I can check out all the cool blogs you linked to! Fun, fun!
You’re gorgeous Roeshel and Flat Kelly agrees with your assessment of the conference – she had a blast too! Wish the real me could have met you – but there’s always next year!
Congrats on your lucky winnings too!
Kelly
Like I told Cassie… I’m overwhelmed at reading your post, I can’t imagine what it was like to be there! Next time, baby… next time…
Roeshel,
It was so great to meet you in person, even if I did miss my floor when we got on the elevator together! You are as lovely and sweet in person as you come across on your blog and I expected nothing different.
Take care, Laura
Fun recap! I just love seeing these faces and saying that I actually know some of them now. It was such a pleasure to meet you…I know we both had our stresses from home in the background, but hopefully we’re all in the clear!
loooove the pictures – you’re so beautiful! Glad you went – I would just *die* if I could go next year … here’s hoping!!
It was so nice to meet you — I’m Diane from the 3M TEKK booth! Loved your pics so now I can remember what everyone looks like! We could’ve used another week to meet everyone!
Love it that you shared Haven with us bloggers that didn’t get to attend. Thank you.
Roeshel, I will never forget….that first night, at the cocktail party, when I saw you and without thinking, or remembering that I had never indeed met you in person….just bursting over to you and said “Hi Roeshel!” I might hide it better than I think…. but I am soooo shy at places where I don’t know anyone and seeing you was like a drink in the desert…so refreshing!!! I am touched you consider me a real life friend because I feel the same. I am sort of wishing that the kids had not occupied so much of my free time, so I could have socialized more at night… but it is is what it was meant to be and I am so grateful for the experience. I think I have been putting off doing my recap, for it will signify that it is truly over, but I will tonight! xoxoxoxoxoxo
Ah, Roeshel, your gorgeous face was one of the very first I saw and I’m SO glad it was. It was so great meeting you finally and getting to actually hang out! I kept telling Dusty that you looked like a Hollywood actress in that crowd. I would scan the room and even my photos and be like “WOW! Roeshel is just stunningly beautiful!”
Thanks for much for including me in your recap! I had the best time and cannot wait to do it again next year!
Hi Roeshel,
This is a great recap post and it was so nice to meet you at Haven! I hope your I ♥thrifting day is a success! I’ll probably go to Phila for I♥thrifting….it’s much closer.
Hope I see you next year at Haven!!!! Do you attend the snap conference?
I’m so glad we got to meet too! Our thrifting day is usually a small group but we have a great time! I hope you find some fun stuff! I don’t attend the SNAP conference but maybe I’ll consider it next year after meeting Tauni in Atlanta too. 😉
Looks like a wonderful time, lucky you to meet so many wonderful people!!! XO
Kristin
I think, after reading yours, and several other fine ladies (recap) this is where I’ll be next year, for my first conference. 🙂 Maybe we’ll bump into each other; would be so nice!
what a great event, thanks for sharing with us, I hope to go next year.
one more thing, your yellow dot dress!!!!!!! you are so cute!
xo Debi
Roeshel, it was so nice meeting you in real life! I’m just now getting around to all the blogs and reading all the recaps! gahhh! The next time I’m in Pittsburgh we will have to get together… I have tons of family up there (and my parents are currently visiting).
