I got crafty at the DIY Club recently. Loving most things Pottery Barn, these PB Found Parat Mirrors were on my birthday wish list but that day came and went and besides…
they aren’t convex mirrors and the price tag of $79/each isn’t something I’d really want to spend. Lamps Plus has this LARGE convex beauty for $104. Definitely not in my budget.
I’ve always wanted to do something with convex mirrors so I decided to create a DIY version.
Materials:
- Styrofoam 12″ wreath forms (I used 3)
- DecoArt MagiKote
- Dark brown spray paint
- DecoArt Americana paints (Ebony and Traditional Burnt Umber)
- Hot glue
- 8 1/2″ Convex mirror (x3) affiliate link:
Tutorial:
1. Using a foam brush, coat the top and sides of Styrofoam wreath form and let dry.
The DecoArt MagiKote seals the Styrofoam, creating a paintable surface.
Without on the left, MagiKote on the right…
2. Give each Styrofoam wreath form 2 coats of spray paint (dry between coats).
3. Remove brackets from back of convex mirrors.
4. Attach convex mirrors to center of wreath with hot glue. I used hot glue on the back of each mirror. Once in applied to the Styrofoam in the center, I used hot glue around the perimeter of each mirror too.
5. Touch up with Americana paints.
6. Let dry and hang using Command velcro strips.
What do you think? {besides the fact that the top one is a little off?!} It’s okay. They’ve since been moved and are now aligned.
I love them as they were but I can never leave well enough alone so I’ve done a little embellishing using beaded garland (attached with hot glue)…
My convex mirrors are hanging using Command Velco Strips.
These will go in our master bedroom makeover but for now I’m liking them here, in the family room
…until next week when you’re likely to see them moved again. It’s a sickness. I just love rearranging. You know you do that too right? . . .
They’d look fab horizontally displayed too!
Like this project? I’d love for you to share!
The mirrors look great. You are so clever and very resourceful… nice job!
Thanks, Linda!!!
Have a great day!
Hello,
I have been looking for these mirrors to do a DIY sunburst mirror. Where do you get these? I clicked the link you provided but it brought me to your shop and they weren’t there.
Thanks,
JM
Hi Jessica – sorry about that. I added the correct link in and it is in my shop under “crafts”. These are the ones I purchased: http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B004MF24IA/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=th061-20&linkCode=am2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B004MF24IA“>PARTSMART SMR729193 8-1/2
Thanks!
Those look great! I did something similar in our guest bath with mirrors from the Thrift Store. I like your DIY using styrofoam!
Gosh, that’s super creative. I may have to try my hand at this one of these days. I’ll share it with you (and give you street cred of course)!
So friggin’ cute! I love the beaded detail around the mirror. It adds the perfect touch to the project! 🙂
Wow, great job Roeshel, I love it.
Thank you, this was just what I was looking for. I like the unusual, different types of crafts, not the “make a cake stand from a candle holder” type. I am looking for a 10 inch convex mirror, but I noticed from your links that that size might be scarce. I need it to fill the space on something I made. Thanks for your ingenuity.
Roeshel,
I’m blown away! Those are so cool, I am sooo making these. Amazing what you can come up with! Oh that’s a pin alright.
Some of the photos of finished product look like wreath is nice/shiny black, but close up photos show that it really is Styrofoam, right? I love the true black look but don’t want to have it look like poorly painted Styrofoam. Am I not seeing it correctly?
Sheila, it is Styrofoam but the DecoArt MagiKote helps seal it up a lot and make it a paintable surface. I can tell up close that they are Styrofoam (although not poorly painted) but I like the textured look. Maybe you could try using something other than Styrofoam.
I’m a little late to the party… but great job! Another idea may be to cover or wrap the styrofoam with fabric. Most fabric stores carry faux leather and some are even very thin which would be easy to work with. Just an alternative… 🙂
I have reposted your tute on Russian site for customizing ideas. http://secondstreet.ru/blog/dekor_sten/zerkalo-na-stene-master-klass.html
I liked your idea very much. Thank you
Thanks for sharing and linking back to DIY Show Off! 🙂
Enjoy the weekend!
Well, this is pretty darn awesome! Great job! 🙂

Seriously?! This is fantastic — and I didn’t know you could seal styrofoam to paint it — thanks for all of these great ideas all in one post!
This was so stinkin clever Roeschel! Oh my word- you’re awesome!

Pingback: Round Concave Mirrors
I saw your project at Knock Off Decor and had to come see this project for myself, as I have been in mad love with concave mirrors for many years, ever since buying one back in the 90’s at a Bombay Store in Chicago (I miss Bombay stores). Absolutely excellent and brilliant — even I might be able to do this project. Thanks for the tutorial and photographs. The added bead detail was the perfect touch.
I’m almost finished with the mirrors but can’t tell from your photo if the convex mirror lies on top or nestles into the Styrofoam? Mine sits fully on top and you can see the ilver sides of the mirrors. I’m hesitant to cut the Styrofoam. Any ideas?

Love Them !!!
I was wondering what exactly is that tubing you used next to the beading, Roeshel.
The tubing is actually just the frame on the mirrors. I just painted it dark brown. Hope that helps!
Thanks for the great tutorial and supply sources. I want to make some nautical mirrors and appreciate the inspiration!
They look Pretty 🙂 Great job 🙂 Thank you for sharing 🙂
