DIY dressing room, guest room

Dressing Room Reveal

{THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED. Congratulations to Ashley from A to Being Creations!}

I am thrilled to be partnering with Apartment Guide‘s New Year, New Style: Decorating on a Budget Blogger Challenge!

I had been wanting to give the upstairs guest bedroom some dressing room touches for a while now. We have another guest room on the main floor with it’s own guest bathroom AND we rarely have overnight guests (4 nights in nearly 5 years). I still want it to function as a guest room – it has the most comfy bed and when the girls come over and raid my closet (we share clothes and shoes)…it’s a fun place to hang out and talk style and fashion. Ready to decorate your home but short on cash? Apartment Guide can help you find inexpensive decorating ideas for how to update an area of your home without spending a lot of money.

My dressing room sits catty-corner across the hall from the master bedroom, but it’s not a big inconvenience and I love having a ‘girly’ space!  Let’s head in…

I hope you don’t mind around 40 pictures…there’s so much to see! :)

To maximize the space, I rearranged furniture. (Want to find even more decorating tips for your home? Apartment Guide provides ideas for people in any sized home on http://www.movingtoday.comand http://www.apartmentguide.com/blog/).

The closets also had a lot of wasted space.

Shelving installed!

After:

This one only had 1 rod for hanging clothes…

With the addition of two shelves in wasted space and an extra closet rod…

{I want to get all matching top quality hangers…another day.}

Shelving in the upper areas makes organization easy. Folded clothes, baskets of accessories…

See the bi-fold doors become French door-style here.

For years, my nail polish sat in a basket chest. Sometimes a lid wouldn’t be on tight and there’d be a spill and I’d have to do a lot of digging to find the right color. Using accessory dividers on the wall {hung with 3M vecro hangers} makes selection so much easier. I love coordinating by color.

In the back of this closet is the original old-house closet. Too narrow for hangers. Inspired by Pinterest, my scarves and boots are on display and within easy reach.

Easy Hang Closet Extension Rods double hanging space for boots shown above and pants/skirts as shown below:

Ironing board gets a new cover and totes aren’t shoved in a corner anymore…

A little seat for pulling on boots…

Two extra sets of bi-fold doors becomes a folding/dressing screen (attach with hinges in the center)…

Behind it hang my dresses, jewelry box, a dresser and more shoes….

Gold shower curtain hooks with transparent green glass beads are perfect on shutter slats for hanging accessories…

Picture of my sister and me {on the right}

A GoodWill found tiered candy dish holds favorite accessories…

Inspired by Martha Stewart, trim/molding organizes my shoes {I think I need to go shoe shopping!}. Four 42″ pieces hold 24 pairs of my {heeled} shoes…

Super easy DIY – cut molding to size. Paint. Mark studs. Measure distance and level. Drill pilot holes. Screw into the wall/stud…

A desk and vanity pushed together in the center of the room make a nice folding station and work space.

Budget friendly thrift store finds:

The clock needs a go-round with some rub-n-buff to tone down the tacky brassy gold but it’s awesome! The front glass bubble has a hinge and the clock winds up with a key. More pictures…

I’m thrilled with my guest bedroom/dressing room – clothes definitely get put away where they belong, finding things is so much easier, getting dressed is fun and seeing everything I have definitely makes putting together an outfit (or girls borrowing pieces) easier!  I feel like I’m getting dressed in a specialty boutique…now all I need are more clothes, shoes and accessories. ;)

  1. What a blessing to have your very own dressing room, love everything about it! I always like seeing new ideas for using things, so I really like the shower curtain hooks for hanging items on your shutters. The chandelier is gorgeous.

  2. I absolutely LOVE how you organized your shoes with the crown molding! I am searching for the match to a shoe way too long these days…gonna steal that idea from Martha and you! ;)

  3. Oooh so jealous!!! Well, no, I don’t do jealous, but I do envious! It’s sooo girly and feminine and well organized. Well done Roeshel!

  4. The room looks great! I LOVE the shoes hanging on the moulding! GENIUS! That is definitely my favorite part of the room. I imagine its going to see a lot of Pinterest action! Great work on the room.

  5. Love the idea of getting the boots and shoes off the floor. Mine end up in a heap and dirt and dust collect there. Disgusting.
    Also, scarf display is genius.

  6. This is awesome. I’ve been wanting to do pretty much the same thing to one of our rooms. So many great ideas, but the shoe storage is my fave. Thanks for sharing. Visiting from it all started with paint. Now following you. I’d love it if you would follow me.

  7. Just one favorite? If I had to pick one, it’s the small accessory boxes on the wall. I always have trouble organizing those little bits of stuff (especially my tiny cache of makeup). I am SO adding such boxes to my closet. :)

  8. I’ve ‘liked’ DIYShowoff on FB for a while now and I’ve recently started getting the emails. LOVE the girl-energy your room gives off. Must find a way to do this sort of thing with my craft room!

  9. I first loved the organization of the nail polishes, what a great way to see what you have. I then saw the molding and how you had your shoes displayed and fell in love with this idea. One question, does it require a certain length heel when displaying your shoes or will any size work. (I thought I saw a pair of flats).

  10. I really love the way this whole room turned out. If I had to pick Ithink my favorite signle feature would be the desk. It looks like it belongs there& it would be wonderful to have a surface to fold things on.

  11. I love everything about this room! The paint color is gorgeous, and that clock is awesome. You have inspired me to redo our walk in! Love your style.

  12. I have to pick just ONE favorite idea from above? Sheesh..impossible. But the one that I’m doing first is the drawer organizers for my nail polish collection. I keep them in a basket in the bathroom, and you’re right, spills happen! I think hanging them right on the blank wall in my bathroom would be perfect and also bright and colorful. I do have some drawer dividers already, some Mod Podge and scrapbook paper…an idea was born!

  13. Oh, Roeshel, how did I miss this post? It’s so fab. I want to do it all. (Particularly that molding rail full of shoes – what a terrific idea – this from someone that has sixty pair!) I love that soft green, too. To quote Lawrence Welk: “Wunnerful, wunnerful!”

  14. What a beautiful room. I love the chandelier and the artwork. Such a fun room to get dressed in. Lots of ideas for me to use.

  15. Your room is gorgeous! Oh my! You are such a girly girl! :) Even if I had half of those accessories, I’d never wear them. I’m such a tomboy! lol
My favorite part is the shoe storage! that is awesome. However, I don’t have any heels…. I don’t think my tennis shoes would hang like that. :)
    Love everything about your room!
    gail

  16. Such a beautiful room, and fun space to organize! It must be such a great feeling to not have things shoved into drawers and closets, accessible and merchandised as you wish. Great job! I have shoe and scarf storage envy :) I’d love to win the giftcard, btw…I think I’d use it for some moulding and pretty storage bins and baskets.

  17. I love the chandelier and the scarves on display. This is partly because I have recently developed an unnatural adoration for scarves…I can’t get enough of them! Thanks for the chance to win, Roeshel! :)

  18. Wow! You did an amazing job! I really don’t think I can choose just one favorite thing ~ there are just so many things I love… Those pretty white doors are one of them… and the closet organization… and your boot collection (oh, I love them!). I, too, did the “Impossible Projects” challenge, and found it highly motivating. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful work with us all.

  19. Seriously? I love your transformation! My favorite part of the dressing room is those racks to hang your shoes!!!!!! What a fabulous idea! I am totally doing that in my closet! Thanks for joining the party!
    blessings,
    karianne

  20. I LOVE this room!! Can you come make me one? (you’ll have to build the room too…eheheheheee) Fabulous job!

Thank you for the opportunity to win!

    Blessings,
    Kathryn

  21. I had that furniture set as a child and I love how you designed the room incorporating it! It looks so classy, French, romantic, etc. Enjoy the room – it’s gorgeous!

  22. All your storage ideas are brilliant. I particularly like the boots storage by clipping together. I ‘ve never seen that anywhere else. I am not resident in the US but would like to enter for a niece who lives there.

  23. Are you kidding me? This is my DREAM closet! So beautiful! I love the scarves hung like that, and the shoes on the walls- brilliant!

  27. I love the shoe thing from molding. That is such a cool idea! Too bad all my shoes are sneakers or flats or I’d do that bit in a heartbeat. LOL!
I also love the bedding, the walls (is that paint or paper?), and your window treatments. Can we get the details on these?
    Thanks.

  33. My favorite part of this beautiful transformation was the molding on the wall to hang shoes. When I was reading, I actually looked in my room to see if I had a place to use that idea :)

    You did a great job!

  34. i love all the color choices, the nail polish and shoe racks are the highlight for me, but it all comes together so nicely. It makes you feel pampered like a high class dress store! Great job! i already follow you on facebook but google + as well! thanks for this post and the giveaway!

  38. OMG!!!! That is GORGEOUS!!!! I love the candy tier you use for jewelry, the vintage furniture. THE SHOE RACKS!!!!!! It’s beautiful! :)

I have to ask, what paint did you use on your walls?!?! I love it. I’ve been looking for the perfect green for my living room and kitchen and that one is wonderful. I’d really appreciate a reply. :)

  39. Thanks Karla! The walls are painted Lamorna (Mythic brand). It’s actually very, very bright so make sure you get a sample (have it color matched) before making the big decision. I like it in that room because there’s a lot of light/white/ivory to tone it down but…in real life, it’s almost shocking! lol

  40. I love the boot hanging system. Makes me wish I had more closet space. Thanks so much for linking this up at Doggone Dirty Craftin last week. Can’t wait to see what you have for this thursday!

  41. Oh my goodness what an amazing room!!! You have created every woman’s dream closet/dressing room! I love the shoe idea and everything has a perfect place, LOVE IT!!!

  43. So many great ideas here–I pinned a few. The shoe storage is genius! They actually stay up on the moulding like that? I have 20 something daughters and we’ve often joked about turning my son’s old room into a purse and shoe closet now that he is out on his own!
    Mary

    • LOL! Mary – my girls are older too and one is on her own so that’s just what I did with an extra bedroom! haha! And yes, the heels stay on the moulding without any problem. Nothing’s fallen off (it’s been three months)! :)
