Kitchen Progress and a "Help Me Decorate My Kitchen" Poll

I thought I’d get the painting done in one day.  I can usually knock out painting a room in 1/2 a day.  WRONG!  There is so much more cutting in and edging in our kitchen than a standard room.  I am sore. But I’m also happy!  One coat down.  One to go.

I had the pleasure of trying True Value‘s Easy Care Platinum – Paint and Primer in One.
The True Value in Slippery Rock, PA has awesome customer service!
I was skeptical.  I love my high priced paint and with redoing the kitchen, I was prepared to buy my favorite brand.  It’s a kitchen – one important room where paint quality really matters. Mr. DIY’s domain (“D” stands for disastrous. BEST FOOD/BEST Messes.)  But I figured I’d give it a try.  It’s just paint and if I didn’t like it, I’d tell you and re-paint.  However, I’m going to tell you that I was pleasantly surprised!  For an affordable $27.99 a gallon – this paint is amazing!

Old color:  Benjamin Moore “Palisades Park” eggshell finish (a pretty sage/pine color) but with the remodel, I wanted a completely new fresh look.

New color:  Easy Care “Old Fashioned” satin finish (a light blue/gray that depending on the light, looks light blue-green or light blue-gray).  I LOVE the new color.  It looks beautiful with our newly painted cabinets, new Jet Mist granite and marble backsplash. It’s exactly what I wanted. It looked ‘white’ going on but dries darker to a beautiful shade of blue/gray.

Coverage? These pictures are just the one coat. I could get away with one coat and call it “done”. Except there are a few spots where I must have been stretching the paint thin and the green shows through brush strokes so I will do a second coat just for the sake of doing 2 coats/knowing it’s 100% perfect.  Second coat goes faster than the first anyway, right?!

Isn’t it pretty?  It’s perfect for showing off some reclaimed barnwood going in the room and our new distressed medium-tone bamboo floors (coming in June).

BEFORE
AFTER (Yes…small pantry closet is gone! So is the vinyl flooring!)
You can see the “Old Fashioned” wall color in the back ground of the pictures below.  So, now I’m choosing the overall feel and accent colors. I have a farmhouse style.  We’ve made up my mind but I’m curious to see what you think of the choices I created to choose from.  Please vote below for your favorite! (Click here if you’re reading in your reader or email if you’re interested in voting.)  I might be persuaded to change my mind.  I’m indecisive like that.

Option 1 – Light Aqua/Blue & Green

Option 2 – Light Aqua/Red

Option 3 – BOTH!  Combine it all!
Option 4 – Neither.
Something completely different.
Which would you choose?
Have you tried the Easy Care brand paint?
What do you think?
HAVE A WONDERFUL WEEKEND!

Additional Kitchen Workspace?

I’m painting the kitchen this week! More on that soon but we’re also ready to think about our kitchen island.  Our kitchen doesn’t currently have one, but there’s enough room and I can seem myself sitting in there talking to Mr. DIY while he cooks dinner, listening to the details of his day.  He’d also like to have a kitchen work table to provide more workspace and storage.  My morning multi-tasking of eating breakfast and checking emails would certainly be more easily balanced at a kitchen island than in the living room on the love seat.  Ever try to eat with one hand, hold a steady hot cup of tea with one hand, click and type with one or two hands and play mug guard with one hand (safe from kitten jumps)?  Wait, how many hands is that?  I’ve mastered the multi-tasking with only 2 hands but sitting in the kitchen where the sun comes in through the French doors would be more motivating not to mention, easier.
Being DIY’ers, building our own is an option although we’ve never built anything ‘substantial’ in the way of furniture yet but buying might be a option. Here is my favorite kitchen island inspiration. I’d love to build it ourselves using reclaimed wood.
Looking at ‘inspiration’ and ‘window shopping’ is dangerous! How many kitchen carts are too many? (Looking around at the foot stool/ottoman/bench addiction…no such thing AFD (accent furniture disorder), right?)
This kitchen island is a perfect match for our dining room chairs…

While looking for inspiration, I came across this kitchen cart which would be awesome on the patio for beside Mr. DIY’s Big Green Egg (his other love of his life).  Pretty and functional! Great Father’s Day gift idea. 🙂

Do you have a kitchen island? Is it a huge built-in permanent fixture or a movable cart?  Do you love having an open floor space or are you happy with the extra work space and the seating that an island provides? Inquiring minds (of two specific DIY kitchen renovators) want to know! 🙂

Kitchen Makeover at The Nest on the Hill

We started our kitchen makeover last fall. Last FALL! And we’re only 1/2 way there. So it’s a little obvious to you by now that I’m obsessed with kitchen transformations.  I can barely hit the link fast enough when I see a submission with the word “kitchen” in it.  So today’s post is brought  features…

Meet:  Shannon from The Nest on the Hill.  I’ve featured her beautiful home befores and afters in the past. Shannon and her husband just finished their kitchen remodel. After working through updating most of their home, they were left with a pretty small budget for the kitchen.

Here is her kitchen before:

They would have loved to have torn out the floors and cabinets and started from scratch but with a small budget, it wasn’t possible.  Instead, they replaced the countertops, added some new lighting and a kitchen island, painted and ventured into the world of subway tile.  After:

The budget?  $2000!  Wow!

I love the rich new butcher block countertops, the pretty punch of fun in the drum shade chandelier, the pretty ocean blue and the old original charm.  Beautiful job, Shannon.  You two have worked so hard to make your home “yours” and I love watching the progress.

See more from Shannon at The Nest on the Hill.  🙂
