This year’s Haven Conference was the second blog conference I’ve ever attended (Haven 2012 was my first). Since I’m an introvert, I felt that I missed out on so many opportunities to meet everyone last year. This year, I realized that others felt just as shy as I do so I made the effort to step out of my comfort zone and introduce myself first (although if I didn’t walk up and hug you…I still had a few moments of lack of self esteem and fear) and even now realize that there were a ton of blog friends I wanted to meet but never did. I didn’t even catch a glimpse of a lot of bloggers I wanted to meet the entire time I was there. I guess it’s bound to happen in a crowd that HUGE. Bummer. But like I’ve said before: “Meeting face to face in real life is awesome when there’s an opportunity but I’m just as blessed by my online all-day, all-year-long, anytime friendships too!”
What is Haven? Haven Conference is the place to celebrate that DIY spirit. It is where DIY lovers from all over will gather together to encourage and learn from one another.
First and foremost, I have to give a BIG thanks to Angelina from JoJo & Eloise and Sew Crafty Kids.
I was so excited that my daughter Bri decided to join me on the trip to Atlanta, content to just relax by the pool and have some stress free time away. She’s been wanting to start a blog for quite a while now and so when I tossed out a request for a last minute Haven Conference ticket as a surprise to Bri, Angelina couldn’t attend and generously donated her ticket. Got that? Donated. She wouldn’t take $. Angelina, thank you so much from the bottom of my heart. Bri came back feeling so inspired, so empowered and super motivated. She learned so much. I love seeing her excitement and her passion fired up.
Angelina’s kindness made all the difference in our amazing experience. I had her ship us some JoJo & Eloise and Sew Crafty Kids business cards for Bri to hand out to at least give Angelina a small presence there. So, if you’d visit her sites, it’d go a long way to contributing to a HUGE group hug for Angelina since she couldn’t be there in person.
The conference kicked off with the gorgeous Ana White telling her story. Let me take a moment to say…she is radiant! Getting to know her better through her keynote speech was a great way to start 3 days of awesomeness, encouragement to believe in ourselves.
You guys, I have NEVER talked so much in my entire life as I did these three days. I know I wasn’t the only hoarse voice but my days are spend talking to a dog and a cat and a few hours in the evening to my husband (when I can get a word in). I’m just not a “talker”. I sure wish I was…I’d have that low sexy voice all the time!
My shyness affects my ability to whip out my camera and ask for photos too. I didn’t take my Canon for that reason…I knew I wouldn’t pull it out of the bag. And you’ll notice it was mostly on the last day: one outfit…not the two cute dresses I wore. Bummed about that. It’s rare that I’m sporting anything other than paint splattered fashion after all! Poor lighting makes for blurry photos. Ugh. But I worked up the courage to get a few, however left without getting so many more than I wanted.
I managed to squeeze in a few classes between hugging and chatting with friends and sponsors: I couldn’t resist the opportunity to support my favorite brands and to understand sponsorship and advertising with blogs from a brand’s point of view. I admire the speakers for their bravery, the ability to be a natural at public speaking and for generously sharing their knowledge. Each class I was able to attend was SO fun! And definitely inspired me to remember to do what I love, not what others love. So many inspiring tips for decorating. If I wasn’t so tired, I’d be rearranging my book shelves right this minute or digging out my Kreg Jig to finally put it to good use.
I still missed out on so many amazing classes. I seriously wanted to attend them all! Why oh why can’t we all have clones?
Of note:
- Spending some time with the brands I work with face-to-face again was another highlight of the event.
- The sponsors and vendors spoiled us big time! I had to check a bag on the way home as well as ship a package to my home. Thank you so much to all of the sponsors and vendors!
- The accommodations, food and service at the Grand Hyatt were AWESOME!
The dance parties were so much fun! Especially when you’ve learned the DIY/Haven shuffle (created and choreographed by Traci at Beneath My Heart).
The closing by Bob Johnson from Habitat for Humanity was not only funny, it was truly up-lifting and inspiring. The message: Do Good on a Grand Scale. Love that and definitely something at the top of my lift of things to do now.
Thank YOU for each visit, each comment, your support, your encouragement, your compliments, for sharing your projects as well as sharing mine through social media. Whether I’ve met you at Haven or online, I’m so glad we’re friends!
And last but not least, another group hug and HUGE thank you to the amazing Haven team for organizing an inspiring, fun and successful event. It’s everything I’d ever want in a dream conference and you pulled it off. THANK YOU, Rhoda, Kristin, Beth, Traci, Sarah & Chris!

Thank you so much for sharing your experience, Roeshel! I’m shy like you ~ the thought of meeting people actually makes me nauseous so it is nice to hear that I’m not alone. I hope to have the finances, time and courage to attend next year. I loved seeing all of your photos and reading your story. Angelina is such a wonderful person ~ I just ‘visited’ her blog yesterday but I’ll be sure to stop by again today. I’m so glad your daughter got to share the event with you. It’s always better when you get to share things with someone you love.
P.S. I so wish they would stream these conferences for a fee so I could learn but maybe I just need to get out of my comfort zone and actually physically go to one!
Well, the good news is, one of these days we can get brave together and meet in person because we’re close geographically. Once I get caught up (and deal with something going on personally), I’ll be planning that HomeTalk Meet Up. We’ll have to talk so I can see what works best for you in the way of your schedule. 😉
Recording the conference classes would be awesome. I’m sure the team has considered it but with there being so much to do to organize an event as well as keeping costs down and work load to a minimum…it’s probably gotten pushed to the back burner. Hopefully it’s something that becomes available!
Thoroughly enjoyed this post on Haven, Roeshel! You gave a different insight into the goings on especially from a shy persons’ point of view. You made all of us who deal with shyness feel more at ease when it comes to attending events such as this. I would love to attend Haven next year and maybe will get up enough courage to follow through..
Shy or not, I’d love to meet you and maybe I can make it to the next Haven Conference. I heard it was in July in 2014. July and August I’m usually in Germany (that’s where I am now) but hopefully I can wing it next year.
It looks like a fabulous time!
What a great post about yourself and your experience. I really enjoyed it and it looks as if you had a blast!
Cynthia
So sorry I didn’t get to meet you! Next year we MUST meet up on the very first day!! Great recap. See you at Haven 2014 for sure!
Roeshel! It was great to see you, even if it was for only a minute or two. Next year we’ll need to fix that, I’d love to chat longer. 😉 So glad you had fun, and I’m thrilled your daughter has caught the blogging bug too!
I remember meeting you last year, and thinking that you were so darn sweet! I met you and your daughter this year on the elevator, and I wish I had the frame of mind to actually introduce myself properly. Just wanted to say that I love your blog, sorry that I didn’t get to tell you in person. 🙂
I am SO HAPPY you had a great time. It looks like a lot of fun. I’ve seen your picture ALL over the place! Happy, happy times.
Much Love,
Amanda
It sounds like so much fun!! I’m new to DIY blogging and just heard about Haven this year. I might need to go next year! I’m proud of you for going, opening up, and having a good time.
I eeked when I saw that you posted the picture of you and me! I literally “eeked!”. Thank you so much! It was absolutely wonderful to meet you and seriously, I meant what I said…you would make an amazing speaker next year! Can’t wait to see you at Haven 2014! 🙂 Claudia
So great to see you again! Even if it was too brief. Glad you had a great time, and you got so many awesome photos! I think I barely got half of that many. Still have to do my recap post, clearly I’m still recovering from the Haven goodness 🙂
Well, at least this year I got to say hi, which was more than the shy wave that I managed last year! I hope that next time around, I can get a picture with you and tell you face-to-face how much I admire you. 🙂
I loved seeing you at Haven again, Roeshel. It was so fun to meet your cute daughter, Bri, too! (And I’m looking forward to reading her new blog.) I met so many people at Haven, but there were still a few more I wanted to meet. This year was so much fun! I learned bunches from the classes I took, too. My only regret is that I didn’t take any photos! I don’t have a smart phone so whipping out my ipad (with it’s clunky case) was a little awkward! So glad that you and Bri had such a good time!
Sounds like you had an amazing time!! I hope to make it there some year 🙂
Oh, Roeshel! It was such an incredible JOY to meet you. I didn’t take very many pictures either, and I so wished I had gotten one with you…
I think you must be sweeter in person than you are even on your blog… a true and genuine spirit.
It was wonderful to see you! I’m sorry that I didn’t get to meet Bri. It just feels great to see everyone, can’t wait for next year!
Debbie
I’m so glad I got to see you again but sad I didn’t get to spend ANY time with you. Oh well, I’ll settle for a hug if that’s all we can squeeze in any time. Haven was jammed packed with activity — I’m still trying to catch up on sleep. :0}
Roeshel, I am so enveious that you attended Haven, it is on my list. I did get to attend Snap and I understand exactly how you feel about being out if your comfort zone. I am grateful for the opportunity this brought; as I showed myself I can travel alone, stay with a bunch of strangers and walk up to someone just like me(nervous) and strick up a conversation! I hope to meet you at next years conference!
You are a doll! I thoroughly enjoyed meeting you! I totally felt like I was rambling when you and Gina were standing at my booth! I hope I wasn’t boring you to death. Your daughter is precious and I can tell she will take after her momma and do fab at this blogging gig! Thanks for posting your recap. It’s fun to keep the conversations going with the people we met! xoxo
I’m so glad that you had a wonderful time, but I cannot get over the fact that THAT is your daughter!!!!!! She looks like your sister!
Lauren
It was great reading about your experience and looking at all the pictures you took, it looks like it was lots of fun! I want to attend next year though it makes me nervous because I’m too an introvert :/ Anyways it will be awesome to meet you there next year!
Love this post and your Haven photo round-up. I’ve been wondering how to get all those pics on a post! Thanks for the collage idea. So glad I finally got to meet you in person Roeshel. Your daughter is as sweet and beautiful as you are. Have a great week!
First off – it is hard to tell who’s mom and who’s daughter. second off – I totally can see myself right there smack dab in the middle of all those group pics. What kind of lucky guy would I be? … well at least until Mrs Moxie saw them on my fb page ha! voice sexy – yes I’ve heard it. and I do love when you reveal some of your insecurities. In my eyes, you’re a superstar – stand tall. Anywho… really was jealous of everyone who had a chance to attend; it really has me already looking hard at doing a DIY conference in 2014. We’ll see. Cheers and thanks for getting me stoked R. ~jb
So sorry I didn’t get to meet you at Haven. I didn’t manage to fit everything and everyone into the weekend but almost feel that I was two places at once while looking at your fabulous pictures. This is my first visit here but definitely won’t be my last. You make me smile! 🙂
Hey Roeshel! Happy to hear that you were able to come out and have a great time at the Haven Conference! Homes.com & ForRent.com enjoyed sponsoring the event and loved connecting with attendees such as yourself. 🙂 Be sure to take a look at all the photos from the event on Facebook, tag yourself & share with family/friends! https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10151682489139086.1073741827.280285049085&type=3 Hope to chat with you soon!
