DIY Project Parade and awesome DIY features

Hello, DIY friends! It’s that time of the week…time for a fresh new DIY linky party and some awesome DIY features.

DIY Project Parade featured image

If you’re wondering where I’ve been, I’m here. I’ve just been working on non-blogging priorities and doing some major cleaning. Today is the day of our “home visit” with our local Italian Greyhound Rescue. I don’t think they “inspect” your home exactly, but strangers interviewing us in our home does feel like an inspection. Besides, since the new year makes me WANT to clean and declutter, routine cleaning turned into organizing cupboards,closets, purging, 3 trash bags and a pile for donating…well, that’s where I’ve been.

No fear…DIY in the DIYShowOff home will get back on schedule this week. But with a pooch in our near future…this DIY from last week caught my eye. Dog dish chairs at the DIY Village. Awesome!

DIY Project Parade and Highlights

Helloooo!

I’m just about a day late with the Project Parade this week and I apologize. Today is my daughter’s birthday. {Happy Birthday, Bri!} Last week, I spent a lot of time cleaning (as in…full blast purging and organzing) as well as running a lot of errands.  And today, you’re not going to believe this: I cooked! Stuffed peppers upon request. And I baked. A cake. From scratch. A blue velvet birthday cake with cream cheese frosting. If you’re a long time DIY Show Off fan, you know that Mr. DIY does the cooking around here. But every once in a blue moon, I venture to the grocery store, find the kitchen and actually cook a meal {usually reserved for special occasions}.

I don’t have a problem with cooking or baking but as you can see…it threw me off schedule. Oops!

We’re all remembering the children and educators lost on December 14, 2012, at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. My heart is broken. My thoughts and prayers are with the families and community.

thoughts and prayers for Sandy Hook

I came across this site: Hugs for Sandy, where you can upload and share your children’s thoughts, pictures and letters for the Sandy Hook Elementary School community. I think it’s something my girls would have liked to have contributed to when they were younger, a way to show their love. Beth from Home Stories A to Z also shared advice and thoughts on ‘how to talk to your kids about school shootings‘. A Google search showed several ways to donate in order to help.

~*~

If you haven’t seen it this past week, I revealed our sitting room at Christmas time. It’s a place where the sun shines when it rises, a peaceful little area in our home. It’s where you’ll find me in the mornings with a cup of tea and a thankful heart {as well as a heavy heart, prayers and tears the past few days}.

I will share highlights from last week’s party this coming week. Thank you for stopping by today. Thank you always for your friendship, support and for visiting today. I’m sending you the BIGGEST hug, dear friends.

6 Tips for decorating a Christmas tree {DIY Project Parade}

Decorating the Christmas Tree

This is the weekend that we {I} decorate for Christmas! Yesterday and today {probably tomorrow too}, Christmas decorations have exploded in the living room, family room and dining room. There are boxes everywhere. Is it like that for you too? {I apologize for the poor quality pics…but it wasn’t a priority. Not like getting great “after” decorating pictures will be!}

artificial Christmas tree decorating tips

Today I wanted to share a few tips for setting up and decorating an artificial tree, some that help make it look more ‘real’ and full. For our living room, we have a rather nice artificial tree. It’s always mistaken for being real but there are some things I do to make the best of having a fake tree:

Pine Scent

Tip #1: I do burn a Yankee Balsam and Cedar candle to create a real pine smell. Love it! Pretty pine scent without smelling like a pine tree car air freshener.

Yankee Balsam and Cedar candle

Faux Root Ball {and adding height}

Tip #2+3: Rather than a skirt for this tree (our main one where Santa leaves the gifts), we create a faux root ball and giving the tree more height. First, make sure you have room to lift your tree about a foot higher! I set a galvanized tub in the center of a circle of burlap. We add weights to the tub {25 lbs.}. Then I set the stand of our tree onto the tub. I use twist ties to secure two of the feet of the stand to the handles of the tub. I gather up the burlap and tie it around the tub and stand and secure with twine at the “trunk”.

directions: Christmas tree faux root ball

Pull the top of the burlap to make sure it’s over the tied twine. Fluff a little. Lots of room underneath as it lifts our 7.5′ tree about a foot higher. I love that about doing this too!

artificial Christmas tree faux root ball

Tip #4: I also use a 9 outlet Christmas tree extension cord. I like that the outlets are spaced along the extension cord. One plug into the wall outlet and an off/on switch for the Christmas lights. I found mine at True Value Hardware along with lots of lights and decorations!

Christmas tree extension cord

String lights vertically

Tip #5: I was surprised that not many Facebook fans knew this tip, so I’ll share here too: I add my lights to the tree vertically {up and down} rather than around. I can’t tell the difference and when the tree is in a corner like it is in our home, it’s a lot easier than trying to get around it’s width, pulling it out and pushing it back into the corner, moving a ladder all around while trying to “lasso” the tree with strings of lights.

Christmas tree with lights Filling in the tree

Tip #6: If your artificial tree isn’t as full as you’d like it to be, add faux pine garland or silk flower bunches to fill in the gaps {large faux poinsettias help to fill in space and look pretty too}. Even dollar store green garland pushed near the center of the tree will help hide seeing the “pole” through sparse branches. Try larger ornaments and use wide ribbon or tulle as a garland to help fill the empty spaces.

I only have the lights on at the time of writing this post but will share it all decorated soon. I do a traditional tree in our living room with red and gold. Dining room gets a more rustic decorated smaller tree and I can’t wait to do something fun in the family room this year {to go with our eclectic colorful decor}.

Some favorites from last week’s party:

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the crate book shelf at Brandon & Shelby. We wanted to do this in the apartment bedroom, but came up with a different Pinterest-inspired plan. Isn’t this awesome?

I’m not kidding when I say, I’d never get out of bed if my master bedroom suite looked this pretty. I love the gray, purple and silver color combination (and all of the DIY) in Renee’s master bedroom at the Abundant Abode…

DIY Project Parade {and FL vacation pictures}

Helloooo, DIY friends! We’ve just returned from vacation and I’m freezing! Going from sunny days in the 80s at beautiful Fort Myers Beach, Florida, arriving home to PA and 48 degrees with rain. Brrrr! Time to bundle up and prep for Frankenstorm by clearing the patio and winterizing home. It’s a good thing I’m all rested {if I wasn’t feeling so lazy…how is it that I feel the need to ‘recover’ from a relaxing vacation?!}.

Since we only arrived home yesterday, we have no DIY personally to share this week and I hope to get caught up in the next few days. In the meantime, here are some of my favorite pics from vacation. We spent a week in a private beach cottage on Fort Myers Beach, FL. IT.WAS.HEAVEN!

Fort Myers Beach Florida

Sunsets were stunning…

sunsets

Fort Myers Beach wildlife

We ate the best seafood, rented bicycles for the week, collected seashells, soaked up the sun (plenty of sunblock), visited the pier/boardwalk but mostly, we relaxed. The beach cottage was beautiful outside. Nice enough inside. Clean, modern, comfortable and with everything one needs to feel at home. {Just one of those places where I walked around dreaming of how I would decorate and re-arrange…do you do that too? There were a few pieces I loved but mostly, it was decorated with a “Florida beach”/rental vibe…know what I mean?}

Vacation cons: SO many mosquitoes and sand fleas. Crappy wi-fi connection.

BUT, this more than made up for where the cottage fell short: the ‘back yard’ which sits right on the gulf, was breathtaking. The owner put a lot of thought, a lot of time {a lot of maintenance} and a lot of money into making this gorgeous garden oasis with paths and secret gardens, beautiful flower covered pergolas, lounge chairs in several different locations, several different private areas for patio furniture, landscaping, even key lime trees and orchids, umbrellas, a swing, hammock, the prettiest solar lighting I’ve ever seen and lots of privacy. This is only a small peek…

DIY Project Parade – a place to share and search for DIY creativity

I love this time of the week – a chance to see  your creativity, your crafts, your DIY projects, your home improvement. I love visiting the links and sharing our common interest: DIY!

Last week, along with a few other things, I shared the bathroom makeover progress from the apartment renovation:

how to tile a bathroom floor

Some good things about this past week…

DIY:

  • Apartment floors are finished! Ohhh and they’re sooo pretty! Just you wait and see! I’m definitely doing a happy dance over this accomplishment. Ugh. Lots of work! So glad it’s over!
  • Blinds are hung…freebies too. Mr. DIY dug them out from somewhere and I’m sure he told me where, but I think I was probably working and only heard the important part – free blinds. And “he” installed them. Thanks, babe!
  • New deadbolt installed. My impatience had me putting it right back in the box and thinking the brassy gold deadbolt with lost key and the fact that it didn’t match the brushed nickel door knob really wasn’t that important. Again, Mr. DIY rescued the day. He’s my hero.
  • Dressing room area of the apartment bedroom started. So fun!
  • Few paint touch ups completed. Since fall has arrived and the window air conditioner was no longer needed {brrrrr!}, it was removed and I could paint the window sill. And a ginormous box on the apartment wall {something for an outdated telephone line} was removed and I touched up that area too.
  • Old cheap bar stools and a little kitchen island/bar were given a little DIY magic. Such a budget friendly way to furnish the apartment since we already had this stuff just sitting around collecting dust. Saved some $!
  • Dug out some fall decorations and I’m starting to play with getting festive for fall.
Not DIY related:
  • Met up with a sweet blog friend. {Reposhture}. It’s so good talking and laughing with a friend who shares the same interests.
  • Fun fashion photo shoot where I pretended to be a photographer. I admit…I loved the little break away from months of non stop DIY.
  • Invitation to participate in the local Symphony Holiday Tour of Homes fundraiser! Such an honor!
But, life isn’t perfect and there were some pretty crappy things this week too. At times like those, I hold a pity party for one for a bit. Then I count my blessings.
Know what? I’m beginning the official count down to vacation. 27 days. If you’re interested in doing a guest blog post for the end of October, I’d love for you to introduce your DIY and blog to DIY Show Off readers. Email me at thediyshowoff@gmail.com to discuss. :)
What I love about today is it signals a brand new week and a clean slate for me. I love this day when I can cancel the pity party and celebrate what’s been going on in your life as I invite you to share my favorite topic. DIY! Thanks so much for being here today, friends!

This week, we put in a new toilet, new vanity and today I’ll be back at the apartment working on some plumbing with Mr. DIY along with installing new vanity lighting, a bathroom mirror and finishing up sanding a door in prep for new paint. Tired, yet? It’s all a part of the DIY journey but the reward is well worth the time and effort.

I’m hoping to share our tiling experience from the apartment bathroom this coming week.  And this week, I am finally refinishing the sanded hardwood floors! Woo hoo! You know what that means?! JOYFUL DIY! Once those are dry…the fun decorating, fun small space storage solutions begins! Finally! The rewarding part of the apartment renovation. As usual, there will be a lot of DIY and thrift store shopping. Can’t wait to share with you! Want a sneak peek? Okay, but just in black and white because I want to share  the full room reveal before the tutorials. I do share updates on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram – follow DIYShowOff to stay up-to-date!
