Paint in My Hair – Family Room Makeover and Crown Molding Trick

Paint in my hair! Don’t you love that for a DIY blog name? Lisa from Paint in my Hair blog has two great projects to share. Both involving paint and both are awesome.

After adding more pieces…but you have to see the original post to learn her genius trick for making crown molding more luscious! Seriously – it’s something I plan on doing. Super cool and she makes it look so easy!

Love it! What a huge difference! Definitely a great idea and I love the results!

Lisa also had an entire real wood paneled room. It’s beautiful. And Lisa hesitated to paint it. She even lived with it thinking it’d grow on her. She added light colors to try to brighten it up but it just wasn’t working.

I know how that feels. It’s hard to make the commitment to paint wood. (One of our family members is going to cry when they see our painted oak cabinets.) It’s taboo when it’s “nice” wood. No one advises it. I have to admit, it’s a hard decision but I’d do the same thing. I love painted wood paneling so much better. I share Lisa’s opinion. It’s so much more comfortable, cozy and fresh. I love it.

Closet to Mudroom

I love when closets become new fun spaces – little rooms like my cloak room makeover and Gwenny Penny’s sewing/craft space featured earlier in the week. Take a look at Amy from The Mistress of Oxford‘s closet turned entryway mudroom!

Before:

They have a row of three closets on one wall. They needed a functioning space in the entryway so they retiled for the space, took the doors off and made a half wall. They relocated the light switch for a pass through and the closet turned mudroom/entryway was born.

Don’t you love it?! When there’s 3 closets in a hallway, what a great idea to make one into a functional entryway space to put on shoes, hang keys and store a purse or backpack! Great idea and beautiful job, Amy! Thank you so much for sharing! It really

Progress in the Kitchen

This is what our kitchen looked like when we bought the house. Not much has changed in three years except for the appliances, range hood and wall color.

The time has come to upgrade – make it “ours”. We started with the cabinets. After removing doors and hardware, equipped with our Dremel Multi-Max, we sanded. And sanded. And sanded.

We applied primer with our paint sprayer (Rockler) and brushed the paint on using our Purdy paintbrush.

Now they’re no longer ‘orange’ toned red oak…

Next step is countertops. We’re going with granite. I wanted soapstone but the kitchen is Mr. DIY’s domain. Soapstone is durable but easily scratched and high maintenance. Luckily, we’ve found a slab of granite that is dark gray with white veins very similar to soapstone.

Not too much DIY with the countertops other than demolition/removal of old laminate but more updates coming soon!
