Our farmhouse kitchen is still evolving. We still have some finishing touches such as baseboard trim, little pot rack/light fixture DIY, stove backsplash and kitchen island. But I wanted to show you how it’s looking today.
I’ve decided to go with red as an accent color.
My favorite piece of furniture is this old mail sorter (?) that we use as a Butler’s pantry. We do regularly use items stored and displayed here.
My new cow canvas print (wuslu.com)…
And we’re using two old school desks pushed back-to-back as an ‘island’/more work space for the time being…until we work on our do-it-yourself kitchen island.
{distressed wide plank antique java bamboo floor}
I’ve yet again moved my subway art! To be truthful – I accidentally pulled off some plaster behind it when re-arranging. This was my quick fix in time for entertaining guests (no time to do a patch). No one knows but us. Shhh! (and now I notice that E-A-T is messed up from when I was leveling the subway art. Oopsy!)
You can see the sliding ladder/spice loft and cook book library {antique chicken feeder} in this shot…
New mugs and a cook book holder is perfect for supporting the iPad…
On the DIY to-do list:
That’s the result of my whole house cleaning when all I accomplished was playing life-sized doll house in the kitchen. Oops. Back to work for me. 😉

i love your cow canvas! so cool!
Thanks, Cassie! I love their faces and the colors were perfect. 😉
It’s looking soooooo good! I am jealous, jealous, jealous. 🙂
What a fantastic space! I love the desks being used as an island. If it fits, I think it would be awesome to jack it up in height and keep it as your island; it’s perfectly quirky enough to fit the theme of your kitchen. Awesome.
That’s a great idea, Mel! I’ve thought about that too (along with the huge dresser we use as a buffet in the dining room) but neither give me the storage options I’m picturing/designing. I do love the character of both ideas but my husband loves to cook and there are just way too many things that require a perfectly custom organizational plan. Now to work up the courage to do it! 😉
I saw that cow print in a store this weekend, and I fell in love with it!
What a beautiful kitchen. There’s not a single thing that I don’t like.
I’m loving your kitchen so far. You can see how hard you have worked. Fantastic!
Thanks, Cindy! It has come a long way (before pictures in our home tour). It’s like a completely different house! I love that part…making it ours. 🙂
Your kitchen is absolutely beautiful and I love the DIY custom touches. The mail sorter is amazing.
I love it! I’m jealous of your Pot Rack Restore find! I kind of want a pot rack but afraid I wouldn’t like it up. For $5 I’d definitely give it a try! Also your floors are fabulous and I love the cow print. Your temporary kitchen island is so cool looking!
It’s looking amazing! I love your mail sorter! I think using old pieces in a new way is what makes a home unique.
Everything is looking so great already Roeshel and your finishing touches are just going to put it over the top! Love the cow print! 🙂
Vanessa
I love the cow print and your floors, you have certainly been working hard:) I just beautiful!
Your kitchen is looking GREAT!!!! I actually like the desks in the kitchen. And the mail sorter….SWOON!!!
Lakeitha! SO good to see you!!!! Thank you!
Love the pot rack–my mom has the same one in her kitchen (not for $5 though!). I’d like to put a similar one up in ours, but our ceilings are painfully low already. I’m thinking of doing something on the wall instead.
I like the school desks a lot. Great idea.
That looks amazing! I love your kitchen!
Awe, thanks, Gabbi!!! 🙂
Roeshel,
I love your kitchen so much. That idea of the two desks is awesome for the center island. Do you mind if I pin it? I don’t want to forget 🙂
blessings,
karianne
PS Don’t get me started on that mail sorter 🙂
ohhh, love that mail sorter Roeshel! and the temp island! Can’t wait to see that evolve!
gail
Thanks, Gail! Just working up the courage to build an island. Hopefully soon! 🙂 First some other projects (one where I’m channeling your creativity! lol!). Have a great week!!!
Your kitchen is my dream kitchen!! I love the clean white with all the charming accents. Your make-do island is ingenious too! 🙂 Great inspiration… If only my landlord wouldn’t mind if I started remodeling. 😉
Thanks, Brittany! That’s such a big awesome compliment! Renting is a challenge but there are so many great ideas and inspiration in blogging to make temporary changes. I’m so glad you stopped by and took the time to leave a comment. 😉 Have a great week!
I really love the kitchen so far, i even like the desks. I am really into islands that are a different color form the rest of the house. What are you thinking of for your kitchen?
Oh, me too, Chance! I’d love to do something bold for the kitchen island. Still considering it. After all – it’s just paint, right? lol I do love a dark aged red since we’re adding some red accents but I think I’d love an aged/distressed turquoise or aqua too. Or bold black. So.indecisive. lol! It definitely won’t be white/gray to match our cabinets but having a little trouble making a commitment! 😉
It looks awesome!! Love the backsplash and subway art! And, of course, the desks are a brilliant solution!
🙂
shaunna
Thanks, Shaunna! It’s so good to “see” you! 🙂
I am in love with your sliding ladder!!! Did you make it? We are interested in doing a sliding ladder for our mudroom but they are expensive! I also love your antique mail sorter and the two desks as an island. The accent color in my kitchen is red too. I am in the process of doing the pics for a tour… If you could let me know about the ladder when you get a chance that would be great!
Thank you!
Hi Catherine! I’m glad you found what you were looking for (the sliding laddder tips). Super easy! I love the character it adds and I do use it since I’m short. 😉 Looking forward to your tour! You have a beautiful home!
Very nice….I love the two old school desks as an island.
My favorite thing has been since I first saw it is your sliding ladder. LOVE, love, love. Sigh, love some more. I don’t know why, but even as a kid, I can remember being so enchanted with sliding ladders in homes, and one in the kitchen, my uber most favorite room in the home. I have a big open concept kitchen and I have wracked my brain of where I could put one. Maybe you need to come for a visit to San Fran and stop by my home to tell me where it can go! Then we will figure out where I am going to put sliding barn doors. My other dream decorating item.
Your kitchen is gorgeous! I love it so much! What a beautiful space. 🙂
Oh my word! I love it! And I adore the desks as an island. So clever 🙂 You are amazing!
What a gorgeous space! Your antique touches like the typography and ladder are perfect! And in case it counts, I love the two desks! It makes your space so unique! I dunno… work your magic on them and it’s my bet they may just stay…
Donna
I love your kitchen and the backsplash is amazing!

Such a great eclectic space! That cow print is amazing. I should get one for my husband … he works for the dairy industry in milk marketing …

Thanks, Becca! I can’t wait for the final reveal too! LOL! It’s been a long process!
And I am so thankful to my web developer (Maximus at http://a1websitepro.com/) for fixing my feed! It had been broken since December and I tried a gazillion things and even had other professionals trying too. He finally figured it out. Don’t know what I would do with him! 🙂
I always love seeing your kitchen. I think using the school desks is very inventive. They look great but I know you probably have something even better in mind to create there. Just love love love this kitchen.
