I started a project to share, but time got away from me, a car got towed, I procrastinated my work by working on the bathroom and so it’s not finished (neither is my work and neither is the bathroom). But, here are some DIY wreaths that I made last year. They were so easy to make! Cardboard and ribbon – you might even have the supplies already sitting around ready to go.
Editing to participate!
Update: I’m linking to the Wreath Party at Modern Country Style!
I saw a DIY ribbon wreath on a wire frame last year and came up with this easy inexpensive holiday alternative.
Time: About 1 hour (Seriously, it took me longer to type these instructions & add photos!)
Materials:
Ribbon (I used about 35 feet, thick wired ribbon works best and will save you time!), cardboard, scissors, Xacto-knife, coordinating decorative pick/bow
Instructions & tips:
Trace a dinner plate (or your preferred circle for wreath size) on a piece of cardboard with an Xacto knife. You can also trace and cut out with scissors, but that’s a little more difficult.
Trace a smaller sized salad plate inside the bigger one:
Now, cut ribbon into pieces. I cut about 33 – 12″ strips. You can use any width/length of ribbon. I used 2 1/2 in. Tip: The wider the ribbon, the less work covering the cardboard. I also used wired ribbon so that I could fluff and manipulate the pieces better. 🙂
Next, you don’t
have to notch the ends of your ribbon, but I think it give it more of a wreath-y look. Tip: Don’t be a perfectionist! Layer ends and cut several notches at once to save time!
Now the fun part! Tie the ribbon around the cardboard ring, knots on the outer edge. I did 1 tie not a double knot since my ribbon is wired and stayed. Continue this step until the entire ring is covered. Note: There will still be cardboard showing but we’ll address that in the next step. Tip: For a fuller look, use more ribbon and slide pieces close together.
Next, start another layer filling in the bare spots. This time tie the ribbons in between the first layer to cover up the cardboard. I knotted this layer and place the knot in between the outer and inner edge of the cardboard ring, facing you.
Almost done! Fluff and manipulate the wire ribbon to get a nice shape and to cover all of the cardboard wreath.
Add a bow or the coordinating happy stuff you’ve chosen like holly, pinecones, Christmas ornaments, candy, etc. Here’s an easy to make bow:
Use a l
arge piece of ribbon to tie around the center (hiding the twist tie) and cut desired length of bow “tails”. Fluff!
TA-DA! A beautiful handmade ribbon wreath created with love by your own two hands!
If you make one – please share your photos with me and I’ll post your photo here to show off!
I made one using tulle and the smaller circle cutout for the main bathroom too:
I also want to share some other great DIY holiday ideas with you.
I made an Eddie Ross-inspired ornament wreath last year too. Another easy DIY project with beautiful results. It’s still packed up but I’ll show it to you another time.
Keelie from Red Writing made some cookies for the party…quilt cookies.

I think your ribbon wreath would be perfect for the inside of my front door (and the price is right!). I'm totally making one!
I haven't started holiday decorating yet, but hope to have some fun stuff to post in the coming weeks. I'll be anxious to glean some inspiration over here for sure, though. Great wreath…I may try a version of this with my younger boys with ribbon they pick out.
peace.
Are you accepting thanksgiving entries for this holiday party? 🙂
What a super fun post…every project you have here is adorable! Your ribbon wreaths are so pretty! Love those green acorns.
That wreath is fab! I'm loving all the Christmas stuff!
Thanks for the great party!
Rachelle
Love the green in that ribbon you used ~ just gorgeous!
My kind of project, quick and easy! I may have to do one for my workroom!
Hugs,
Marsha
I love that wreath. I made a ribbon wreath for Halloween and I'll have to make one for Christmas now!
Hi Katie – YES! I'd love to see your holiday post! Thanksgiving included! 🙂
I'll edit and add that to the post.
Thanks!
Roeshel
I am looking forward to seeing your Eddie Ross wreath. I tried that today and got totally frustrated. I used what seemed like a ton of Christmas balls of different sizes, but it ended up looking like a hanger with some Christmas balls on it. Help!
Love the feathers on the ledge! Very creative touch! But I have to ask, are they loose or did you attach them to something? I'd be terrified of the constant picking-up of feathers I'd have to do!
Thanks everyone! 🙂 I know – isn't Hudson Goods awesome?
Amber – the feathers are a feather boa! I love how soft and fluffy and snow-like they are for holiday decorating!

All of our christmas stuff are packed and still at the other house!
So I'm scared I won't be enterring this week.
+ my love won't let me unpack those before the 1st of December!
That wreath is beautiful! I gotta make a run to Joanns so I can make one! So fun and cute. Thanks for sharing!
i've never heard of this store and oh my they have amazing things!!
Hi Roeshel! sorry you had a somewhat rough day~ Your beautiful wreath prevailed! Big smile. Even if circumstances don't always permit us time….creativity still flows in the mind….whirling in the midst of cars being towed or waiting in a doctor's office. Anyhoo, lovely lovely wreath. It turned out wonderful and I checked out Redswriting blog….absolutely wonderful. I always enjoy coming here, it is delightful.
Hope your day is wonderful!
Blessings,
Debbie
What a lovely wreath! I live fairly close to a ribbon factory so I am always looking for great ways to use ribbon.
Thanks for hosting this fun party!
Thank you Thank you Thank you for the link to the instructions on making that ornament wreath. We have all the ornaments to make one, but have been looking for instructions! Yeah!!!
The Christmas wreath is so cute.
I made one similar to it for Halloween using black netting. I really loved it. I would take a pic of it but it is already packed. I got the idea for it from http://j-a-girl.blogspot.com/2009/10/feature-friday_16.html
I love your ribbon wreath! What a great way to burn through a forgotten ribbon stash. I have a ton of christmas ribbon I need to use!
That is a great wreath idea. Thanks for posting to Made it Mondays. You are very creative!
I love how simple and thrifty this project is. I may give them a try since they are light weight maybe to tie on chairbacks at the holiday table. Thanks for always inspiring me!
The ribbon wreath is gorgeous, I love the color green! A few years ago when my daughter was in Girl Scouts, we needed to do a Christmas craft project so we made a bunch of miniature Godseyes tree ornaments with popsicle sticks and yarn. I had so much fun making them and now we put them on the tree every year.
Ok Roeshel, I just voted for you on the DIY bathroom project. Good luck, I hope you win!!! 🙂
I L-O-V-E your ribbon wreath! What a super idea and exactly the right price!
That's a really clear tutorial. Thank you so much for linking up. I have to say that I nearly fell of my chair with excitment when I saw your comment. I'm completely star-struck.
