Kacey's LivingRoom and DiningRoom Makeover

Thanks to Kacey, I have another living room/dining room makeover to share with you.  It’s another beautiful transformation!  Here is her letter:
The Dining Room:

We just moved into an older home.  All the walls were WHITE!  So, we had a blank canvas to work with.  We started in the Dining Room.

Then, we painted red and added wainscotting to the wall.  Budget tip: we used old bed slats for the vertical wood on the wall.
Then we added crown moulding and a chandelier.  The table is a bit oversized, but we got it for $100 from a woman designs wall art.  It was her table for her Vegas showroom.  What a deal!  The tryptich wall art is also her design. Curtains… We’re still working on those.  All in all, this project was SUPER fun.

THE LIVING ROOM:
Also a blank canvas.

Here is the living room after the Tiffany’s inspired paint choice 🙂

I am a musician… If you can’t tell.

Living Room and Dining Room Shot.

No furniture in the Living room, yet.  But, hopefully soon.

Amazing, right?  The dining room – love the wainscoting (a dream of mine!) and how about those beautiful black and white accents with the red?  So pretty!  The living room?  LOVE the new colors and her wall art.  Kacey – thank you so much for sharing your gorgeous home!  Great job!

Personal updates:  I have to share with you! I have a new niece!  Addelyn Grace was born yesterday!  I LOVE baby girls.  She is so precious.  All 9 lbs. 1 oz. of her!  AND on another happy note, I will be driving to the airport tonight to pick up my daughter.  She had the best experience and so much fun in Germany with the foreign exchange program the past three weeks but I’ve missed her so much!  And finally, Niski is showing a LITTLE improvement.  I spied a little movement in her back legs.  Not much and not walking or 100% yet and still a few more weeks of crate rest but it’s so reassuring to see her lifting her back end the teeniest bit!

Living Room/Dining Room Combination Makeover

You know me, my favorite type of DIY is room makeovers.  Since we have so many rooms that need DIY attention, I’m always inspired by beautiful room transformations.  This one submitted by Merritt from So It’s Not Perfect is so pretty!  I love the coastal charm she added.  Here is her post:

Since the day we moved in to our new house, one of the rooms that has really bothered me was the living room. Sure, it was big, but it really lacked any character at all.

It always felt to me like it lacked any definition, and was reaaaaalllly boring. So after 6 longs months and countless hours of convincing Hubs that beige (even Ralph Lauren beige) isn’t a real color, we finally decided to tackle the living room.

Like night and day! I was telling Hubs the other day, it feels like someone just turned on a light!

We decided that in order to create character, as well as some architectural interest, we added a chair rail.

We weren’t sure what the “official” chair rail height was supposed to be, so we just eyeballed it to the height that looked best (it turned out to be 44 inches). Then we painted the bottom half Valspar’s “Ultra White” in a semi-gloss finish, and the top half Martha Stewart’s “Heavy Goose” in a flat finish. It was my first time using Martha Stewart paint, and I’m really happy with it. I’ll definitely be using it again.

Then we attached 1×4 pine boards to the wall with a nail gun and filled in the nail holes with wood filler and sanded it back to smooth before we painted them white. Originally, we weren’t going to use really good wood for the chair rail (we were thinking more along the lines of MDF), and honestly, this was kind of an accident. We went to the lumber yard to try to save some money on the wood, and the guy there assured us that we wanted “clear” wood, which just means is has no knots in it. That sounded good, but we had no idea what he was talking about. He was asking us all kinds of questions and saying all these things that I’d never even heard of. Our response was “uhh, ok. Whatever you think is best…” Seriously, no idea what he was talking about. It looked great on the walls, but not really the way we thought it would, it looked much fancier!

Unfortunately, the walls aren’t level and bow in and out in some spots, so putting it up was more difficult than it should’ve been. Yes, I could’ve torn down the drywall and fixed it, but we were so close to being done! I couldn’t stand the thought of starting over. Between the uneven walls and the great looking wood, we scrapped our original idea of board and batten and just stuck with the chair rail. The wood for the whole room and the hall cost about $50.

I wish these pictures did it justice, but it just FEELS different in the room. It’s so much lighter, cleaner…more peaceful.

I really pared down the accessories in the room, I wanted it to feel less cluttered. I only used the items that I absolutely loved, the rest were put away. I got the starfish at one of my favorite antique/cool stuff that you can’t find other places store. They were $1 each! The bell is from Marshall’s and “Boats” sign is from TJ Maxx. I can’t remember exactly how much they were, but they were less than $10 each.

I dry brushed the buffet with Martha Stewart’s “Driftwood Gray” (it used to be black). I haven’t decided whether or not I’m going to sand the edges, I’m really loving the worn look it has now. I’m also really happy with how the fireplace looks now. I know everyone says to not have a whole bunch of pictures on your mantle, but I don’t care. I love my pictures, and I think it looks cool. I think especially since they’re all black frames, it really looks de-cluttered. The mirror is the same one that was on the fireplace before, just repainted.

The white chair is the Pottery Barn Charleston chair. Now before you think that Hubs has lost his mind and let me buy a $1000 chair, let me just say that I paid a whopping $30 for it. Yes, you read that right, $30! Craigslist, baby! It’s the most comfortable chair on the planet, and probably the best $30 I ever spent.

The other major thing we did was make a dining room area. The living room was certainly big enough, and it was totally unused space before. It also means now I have room in the kitchen for an island/breakfast bar (a project which I haven’t tackled yet!).

The “Crab Shack” sig
n is one of my favorite things, it’s from Virginia Beach. We were there 2 years ago for my daughter’s cheerleading championship, and I saw in the window at night as we were walking down the street. The store was closed, and it was our last night there, so I sighed and resigned myself to the fact that it wouldn’t ever be mine. The next day, Hubs made sure we were waiting outside when the store opened and begged the lady to sell it to him (it was the last one). He’s pretty awesome like that. The bench and chairs are both from a consignment store, we paid less than $50 for all 3 of them. All I did was paint them and distress the edges. I can’t remember the name of the paint, all I know is it’s Glidden. I threw away the can and didn’t even write the name down. Sorry 🙁

The table is is from an antique store.

It’s made from an old church pew from Saluda, South Carolina. We love it, it’s the perfect size, not only for the space, but also for the four of us. I love how it’s so rustic and simple but so pretty all at the same time.

So there you have it. My new living/dining room! I still have some touch-ups to do, and we’re still figuring out what to do with the floor molding, but I love it so much. It’s so much better than I’d even imagined! I have to say though, there was no way I could’ve done all this without my husband’s help. He was the muscle behind this one, and he’s like a surgeon with a nail gun! (except for when he nails it through pipes in the wall!)

Isn’t it pretty?  What’s your favorite detail?

Thanks for sharing your rewarding hard work with us, Merritt!  You did a beautiful job!

$78.42 Living room Makeover!

Some DIY’ers have magic powers and can transform a room on an unbelievable budget.  That’s what Elizabeth from Southern Comfort did. $78.42 to be exact.  WOW!

Living Room Project Breakdown

This was the best and the worst project I’ve ever done. I say that because I had a vision in my head, but trying to get all those visions into the room was hard. Especially having such a short budget. The most expensive thing in this room was the floor lamp. But we’ll get into that later.

I started this project the last week of May. It’s now July. When I say I’m done, I’m really not. There are still some things that may need a teak here and there. I swear a home is never really complete is it? 🙂

Anywho…
The first project I tackled was the fireplace. Here is a shot of what it looked like before it’s facelift. Not bad per se, but not what I wanted either. John and I had this ongoing “battle” over what to do with the fireplace. I wanted to paint it white, he liked the natural wood color. After many discussions, we did decide to paint it (since most homeowners like white now-a-day and it would increase our resale value, since this isn’t our forever home). This is what sparked the living room makeover. John was leaving for a business trip to Salt Lake in late May. I decided I would surprise him with a new room.

So one evening, one of my wonderful friends (thanks Emily!) came by after work and we got started on painting it. I primed it with some Kilz before painting it. I used Behr’s Ultra White paint. Here it is now.

Beautiful. And yes, John loves it.

The next project I did was the couch. I needed to update the pillows in a bad way. Our couch is a hand me down, and as much as I love it, it is beginning to show its wear. Since we can’t replace it yet, I knew I could give the pillows a little help. So I took the original pillows (as you can see in the first picture) and took off their covers. I knew I wanted a beachy, fun print, so off I went to the fabric store. I found exactly what I wanted.

I thought I liked the rust brown one because I’m in love with the texture, but it doesn’t work in the living room so it will be used in another room someday. But the one on the left was PERFECT. It was pricey at $26.99/yd. which is way out of my budget. Luckily, it was on sale that weekend and I had a coupon (score!) I swear the stars were aligned that day. I ended up skipping out of the store with 3 yards of this fabric for only $7.99/yd! I still can’t believe it. It ended up being the perfect fabric for my pillows. The green pillows I made from some leftover fabric I already had. Perfect.

We exchanged the oversized coffee table for another one we had upstairs. Since the “big box” as we admiringly call it was just a little too large for our small living room, we exchanged it with one we had in storage. It opens the room up and since you can see the floor underneath, does make the perfect place for Maggie to beg for popcorn. 🙂

The mirror above the fireplace I repainted. I used it as a child above my dresser for years. Come to find out, it’s a hand-me-down from one of my Gram’s dear friends I knew as “Grannie Ruth” who died in the 1990’s. She was 88. The mirror was Grannie Ruth’
s mothers!

Project number 3 were the sitting chairs. I moved a couple of our chairs from the kitchen into the living room. I inherited them from my grandparents. They were made after my Dad’s dad decided to have new chairs made out of some wood from our family farm back in the 80’s I believe. I love the history behind them. When I first got them they were little worn and tattered so I re-covered them in a red stripe to match the kitchen, but I knew I wanted them to be beachy for this room. Hmm. I have seen all over blogland amazing curtains and pillows using painters canvas from hardware stores. So I headed to Lowes, grabbed some for myself for only $4.99 I slipcovered the chairs. I didn’t take off the original red stripe, I just slipped the canvas over it. Looks just like linen and gave me the look I was visioning all along. If I need to move them to the kitchen for holidays or guests, I just take off the canvas. Voila.
The adorable pillows in the chairs I found at Goodwill for $2.99 each.

That awesome glass jug was found in my grandmothers house while we were cleaning it out. After a good wash it was perfect. You can’t really tell in the pictures, but it has a subtle blue/ seaglass look. Beautiful.

The bookcase in the corner was a gift from my mom’s dad. He passed away in 2002, but made this for me when I was a little girl for all my toys and books. My mom has been holding onto it for when I had my own house. The picture below kinda shows you how it looked before I painted it. I didn’t really want to paint it. I had this internal struggle with myself for a while it was “being tested” in the living room. Grandaddy made this for me with his two hands. For me. Thinking about me while he made it. How could I cover it with paint? But it just didn’t look right. So after a while, I decided to paint it. I wanted to love it in this room, not just like it. I decided to take the plunge, paint it and MAKE IT WORK FOR ME. And I’m SO GLAD I DID. I love it. It’s perfect, and maybe, one day, I can pass it down to our little one for their toys and let Grandaddy’s vision live another generation. I know he would be so proud.

Like I mentioned earlier, we did purchase the new floor lamp. I let John pick it out. He liked the square lines. I still haven’t decided if I want to switch out the shade for a drum one. Any thoughts?

As for the foyer, I reused the small table we already had. It was a gift from my Gram (mom’s mom) several years ago when she found it at an antique store. It’s the perfect small table for a tight spot. The basket underneath was a given to us (thanks Lyndi!) at one of my bridal showers. It’s been a real life-saver.

I shopped the house and found some picture frames that I placed beach pictures in. Love being able to shop the house and not spend a dime 🙂

The “E” monogram was a project I made back when we lived in our apartment. I bought the vinyl “E” and the wreath from Stampin’ Up. I’ll give the run-down on that project a little later since it’s pretty cool (and very easy to do).

The grand total of our living room cost us $78.42 including paint. Not bad right? I don’t think so. This comes to show that you can have a house that you love with a little patience, a little digging and some creativity.

AMAZING!  Isn’t it?  Thanks so much for sharing your beautiful livingroom, Elizabeth and proving that making a big difference and pretty room doesn’t have to break the bank!
