Every time I make the trip to Ikea, I have to resist the temptation to fill my cart with all of their luscious textiles. But on my most recent trip, I couldn’t resist the $19.99 Gislev rug…
…great price, pretty rug in a generous 4 x 6 size? Yes, please. I knew right away it’d help anchor the seating area in our little sitting room.
New rugs come packaged in a roll, which leaves both ends curled. Ugh! Don’t you hate that? Huge tripping hazard for sure. Normally, I add weight with boxes, furniture, books, even paint cans. But this small room is a high traffic area to our basement and that would create an obstacle course for sure. {and with a woodburner helping to heat this old house, trips to the basement are frequent in the winter months.}
Solution: I grabbed a roll of FrogTape and taped down those edges.
I let it sit for a day or two until we were expecting guests then removed it.It worked! FrogTape was gentle enough on our slate floor. There was no sticky residue when I removed the tape. Hallelujah! And the ends of the rug are now flattened…
Lalka is happy with her new comfy area rug in a room that gets flooded with sunshine…{I use FrogTape to pick up cat hair that won’t sweep up on this low pile area rug too.}
I’m trying this technique in the family room where the area rug curls up. FrogTape won’t hurt the finish on our bamboo floors either. I’ll keep you posted on the progress.
Does this happened to you? What do you use?
I’ll share the sitting room re-decorated later this week!

OH, I love this… What a FANTASTIC idea! I will have to remember this, pinning it to my, GREAT TIPS board 🙂

I’ve wanted that rug for so long! Unfortunately, my husband was with me the last time I went to Ikea, and he said no to that lovely rug!! Lesson learned: Never take husband on Ikea shopping trip–he’s a party-pooper! 😉
Aloha,
Charlie
lol! My trip was husband-free, otherwise I may have had your same experience! So good to ‘see’ you, Charlie!
Love this idea! Funny thing is….I just bought that rug this weekend 🙂 Couldn’t pass it up for that price!
That pretty rug is definitely too tempting with that price, isn’t it? So funny that you bought it this weekend too!
What a great tip…I use sticky backed linoleum tiles in the corners…I’ll take a tile square and cut them in half or in quarters (depending on the size of the rug), remove the paper off the back of the tile and stick it to the underside corners of the rugs. The weight of the tile usually helps to hold the corners down.
That’s a great idea too, Beth Anne! Thanks for sharing!
I love the Command Rug Anchors – that is the only way I’ve found to get my one rug to stop curling up! This is a great idea, too!

What a WONDERFUL idea! That Frog Tape can be used for just about anything, huh? I think it would be good to hold down my rug pad when I try to position my rug over the top too! Thanks for the tip… Happy Tuesday,

We are blessed!
wish i’d thought of that last week when i put my new area rug in the foyer…hubby used two HUGE fire logs on the corners overnight but hey! it worked! i’m going to remember the frog tape trick next time….looks better.
lol, Judy! That’s what I always did – put something heavy on it. However, with it being right in a high traffic area, that wasn’t an option. Although now that I think about it, I could have moved the rug somewhere else, added weight and then put it in place. I’m so impatient though. haha! Thanks for stopping by! 🙂
Is the Frogtape safe for wood floors.
The nice thing about using FrogTape is that it will release without leaving any residue. I’ve seen it used on carpet, tile, fabric, linoleum, laminate, walls, mirrors, furniture and wood without any issues.
This is perfect timing…we just unrolled a rug in our bedroom, and one side of it is totally curled up. I will try this out to flatten things out. Thanks for the tip! 🙂
I have the same problem with the rug in our kitchen and I have used double sided carpet tape at the corners to repair it (though admittedly – multiple times). Nice Tip here and I may try … I saw this morning that FrogTape’s Delicate Surface line received top honors from Consumer Reports in the category of Painter’s tape. Figured I’d mention. Great product. ~jb
I didn’t know that about FrogTape’s Delicate Surface. That’s awesome! I do a lot of painting and love their products. And I haven’t had the heart to use double sided tape on our new floors. I’ve never had luck with it. This working may also depend on the type of area rug. I’m still trying it on the one in our family room. Those corners will not flatten. They curl up. Annoying and big tripping hazard.
Thanks for stopping by, JB. Have a great week!
Great tip! I have been eying that rug at Ikea, too. For $20, that is a steal. Looks good in your room. 🙂
I use dictionaries and heavy books! I guess it’s a “very me” solution given I’m quite the bookworm!
What a beautiful rug and did you get a fablulous price or what? I have been shopping (dreaming) online at Home Depot and holy moly, their rugs are HIGH. Check out this compared to your rug….. sheeh.

I hope that link works….. not even as pretty by far as the one you snapped up. I think I am jealous now…. grin.
Great rug and what an awesome idea!
btw: On another note, the DIY video of the day ad you have on your sidebar is quite annoying as it starts up on its own and can be loud if my laptop volume is turned up. It left be searching around to see where this guy’s voice was coming from.
I had to purchase that rug from IKEA one too. Great color.
Great ideas! I was wondering, do you have any suggestions for area rugs that were stored folded in half and now have that crease down the middle?
We have washed it, sprayed it with water and put a weighted object on it over night, several nights in a row, rolled it the opposite way, but that crease in the middle keeps creeping back up, tripping everyone, any suggestions?
Jennifer, I’ve never dealt with that so I’m not sure. I have heard of trying an iron set on steam (or over a damp towel) to remove the creases in the area rug but not leaving the iron in one place too long. Or trying a hair dryer from the back side. I’ve also heard ice cubes on an area rug where furniture has left a mark (then fluffing it with your fingers) works but haven’t tried that personally either. I’ve also read that regular traffic will help over time. Again, no personal experience so I’m not sure if they work. I also came across this article with some more ideas: http://www.ehow.com/how_4843683_wrinkles-out-rug.html
Thank you so very much Roeshel, I’ll keep pluggin’ way at this thing!!
I have the Ikea rug too but my corners ares still curling up. I tried everything, tape, weights… nothing.
I’ve had it for almost 2 years now.
(your kitty looks so cute on the rug)
Thanks for a great tip!
