I love DIY but Mr. DIY’s preferred hobby is cooking. I don’t mind cooking. Eh. It’s not my favorite thing to do but it’s his passion. Nearly every evening, he unwinds after a stressful day by cooking a delicious dinner for two. Who am I to argue? So, every once in a while, I’ll be sharing Russ’ recipes in a Dinner at DIYShow Off series. This week’s dinner recipes include turmeric rice and tandoori chicken:
- Turmeric Rice

- 1 cup basmati rice
- 2 cups water
- 1 onion diced
- 1 tablespoon black mustard seeds
- 1 tbsp black sesame seed
- 1 tbsp white sesame seed
- Juice of 1 lime
- 2 tbsp cilantro minced
- Pinch salt
- 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
- 1 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 chicken bullion cube
- 3/4 cup frozen peas
- Heat 1 quart saucepan over medium heat. Add mustard & sesame seeds. Cook until seeds start popping on a regular basis (about 5-10 min). Add butter and olive oil. When butter melts, add onions and pinch of salt. When onion become translucent, add lime juice and cilantro. Cook for 3 more minutes then add rice. Stir to coat rice and cook for about 2 more minutes. Add water, turmeric and bullion cube and bring to boil. Once boiling, cover with a tight fitting lid and turn off gas. Wait 10 min. Stir in frozen peas and cover with tight fitting lid. Wait 7-8 minutes or till rest of liquid absorbed.
- Serve with Tandoori Chicken.
- Tandoori Chicken

- 1.5 cups non-fat yogurt
- 2 tbsp garam masala
- 1 tsp tumeric
- 1 tsp curry powder
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1 tsp coriander
- Juice of one lime
- 3-4 lbs chicken thighs
- Add yogurt and spices to a resealable freezer bag. Knead bag till spices are well mixed and blended. Add chicken and knead bag again till the chicken is well coated. Allow to sit for at least 30 minutes but preferably overnight.
- After starting charcoal in a chimney, pile hot coals to one side. Place chicken on the other side of the grill and cover. Open bottom vents of grill completely and close top vents 90%. Allow to cook for about 1 hour till skin is crispy and reddish-brown.
- Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Arrange chicken on roasting pan. Cook for approximately 1 hour till skin is crispy.
- Serve over Tumeric Rice.
He often asks me what I’d like for dinner. This is usually my #1 response. I don’t eat much but when this is being served, I manage two helpings. It’s one of my top favorite dinners. Let us know if you try it!
What’s your favorite homemade dinner?
Thank you and your hubby for the recipe. I have made both before, but I am going to be using his recipe for both from now on.
I am reminding myself to make a trip to my Asian store with hopes of finding some spices I have had trouble finding. And if I do, the McCormick’s or the Spice Island brands are outrageously expensive and not that good to me.
Anyway, thank you ever so much for the recipe. I will be keeping both to make as soon as I replenish my empty spices needed.
You are so lucky to have a hubby who unwinds by cooking! More decorating time for you right? I can’t wait to try his recipe. Thanks so much for sharing. Blessings, Patti@OldThingsNew
That looks so good!
Tandoori Chicken is DIVINE! How blessed you are to have a husband that cooks. Mine does the dishes, and that’s just about as good.
Yumms!! I had an Indian boyfriend and he used to take me to Indian resturants in U.K and amazingly, the food tasted great!!
I can recall I have eaten something similar with him. You just brought the nostalgia back 😉

Ooh! This sounds Really good. I’m not much of a cook; I find the hardest part is just coming up with what to make.
But tonight for dinner I’m seriously going to give this a whirl. The black & white sesame seeds plus fresh cilantro in the rice totally caught my eye. And I think I’ll try to adapt the Tandoori for chicken breasts vs. thighs. Wish my luck.
I’ll let you know how it goes. 😉
Cheers!
Looks incredible! Pinning!
Oh, I wish my hubby could cook something as delicious as this, he has a hard time boiling water 😀 I need to try both recipes!
Pinned it! Can’t wait to try it!
This sounded so good I shared it on Friday Finds!
