DIY dressing room, guest room

Dressing Room Reveal

I had been wanting to give the upstairs guest bedroom some dressing room touches for a while now. We have another guest room on the main floor with it’s own guest bathroom AND we rarely have overnight guests (4 nights in nearly 5 years). I still want it to function as a guest room – it has the most comfy bed and when the girls come over and raid my closet (we share clothes and shoes)…it’s a fun place to hang out and talk style and fashion. Ready to decorate your home but short on cash? Apartment Guide can help you find inexpensive decorating ideas for how to update an area of your home without spending a lot of money.

My dressing room sits catty-corner across the hall from the master bedroom, but it’s not a big inconvenience and I love having a ‘girly’ space!  Let’s head in…

I hope you don’t mind around 40 pictures…there’s so much to see! 🙂

To maximize the space, I rearranged furniture. (Want to find even more decorating tips for your home? Apartment Guide provides ideas for people in any sized home on http://www.movingtoday.comand http://www.apartmentguide.com/blog/).

The closets also had a lot of wasted space.

Shelving installed!

After:

This one only had 1 rod for hanging clothes…

With the addition of two shelves in wasted space and an extra closet rod…

{I want to get all matching top quality hangers…another day.}

Shelving in the upper areas makes organization easy. Folded clothes, baskets of accessories…

See the bi-fold doors become French door-style here.

For years, my nail polish sat in a basket chest. Sometimes a lid wouldn’t be on tight and there’d be a spill and I’d have to do a lot of digging to find the right color. Using accessory dividers on the wall {hung with 3M vecro hangers} makes selection so much easier. I love coordinating by color.

In the back of this closet is the original old-house closet. Too narrow for hangers. Inspired by Pinterest, my scarves and boots are on display and within easy reach.

Easy Hang Closet Extension Rods double hanging space for boots shown above and pants/skirts as shown below:

Ironing board gets a new cover and totes aren’t shoved in a corner anymore…

A little seat for pulling on boots…

Two extra sets of bi-fold doors becomes a folding/dressing screen (attach with hinges in the center)…

Behind it hang my dresses, jewelry box, a dresser and more shoes….

Gold shower curtain hooks with transparent green glass beads are perfect on shutter slats for hanging accessories…

Picture of my sister and me {on the right}

A GoodWill found tiered candy dish holds favorite accessories…

Inspired by Martha Stewart, trim/molding organizes my shoes {I think I need to go shoe shopping!}. Four 42″ pieces hold 24 pairs of my {heeled} shoes…

Super easy DIY – cut molding to size. Paint. Mark studs. Measure distance and level. Drill pilot holes. Screw into the wall/stud…

A desk and vanity pushed together in the center of the room make a nice folding station and work space.

Budget friendly thrift store finds:

The clock needs a go-round with some rub-n-buff to tone down the tacky brassy gold but it’s awesome! The front glass bubble has a hinge and the clock winds up with a key. More pictures…

I’m thrilled with my guest bedroom/dressing room – clothes definitely get put away where they belong, finding things is so much easier, getting dressed is fun and seeing everything I have definitely makes putting together an outfit (or girls borrowing pieces) easier!  I feel like I’m getting dressed in a specialty boutique…now all I need are more clothes, shoes and accessories. 😉
