I filled in the cracks/seams with wood filler.
2 coats of Valspar Porch and Floor paint. I chose a color called Journey. It’s a nice dark chocolate brown.
Then immediately pulled off the tape, pulling away from the paint (some of the tape was completely covered though so fingers do get paint-y). I had newspaper laid out near by so I could throw the wet-painted tape on it (pushing into a garbage bag = bigger sticky mess).
My big center area is 3 x6, so using a pencil, I drew a grid with 12″ squares in order to keep everything symmetrical. I learned that a Magic Eraser is quick and easy for erasing pencil! But, when all was said and done, most of the penciled area was covered by paint and what wasn
‘t, I painted over when doing my final touch ups. I considered using a chalk line, but intimidation got the better of me. I’ve never used one and with me being down on the floor…I was worried I’d smear it all.
I even painted over the gray area one time because despite drawing some ideas on paper, I didn’t like the first design. It’s just paint and it really doesn’t take too long. Right under this room is a wood stove, so the floor is warm and helps to speed up drying time.
I did use acrylic craft paint for the stencil (that happens to match the dark brown perfectly) because it is thicker consistency than the brown floor paint I used. Also – my stenciled areas “bled” a little – anyone know how to get a perfect stencil? Anyway – it actually gave it more character and I like the effect of “fuzzy” edges with the stencil rather than “clean edges”. It really does give it more of a “rug-look”. And honestly – can you really tell? Not unless your nose is 6 inches from it. 🙂

Last part coming up! Replacing the baseboard trim, re-installing the pedestal sink and then the fun part – decorating! I know everyone wouldn’t pair the striped walls with a doily-designed painted floor but the best part about decorating for yourself is doing what you love, right? I promise I won’t hang a polka-dotted shower curtain and crazy wall art. 😉

This is seriously a great idea. I think it looks fantastic and I love the pattern you came up with. We have yet to do anything to our master bath. The floor is mostly old carpet and some crumby tile. Maybe this is something we could do on the concrete?
Thanks for posting a tutorial.
Ta-da is right – that looks fantastic! The border really makes it – almost a shame that it's only temporary!
Looks fabulous! You have the patience of a saint to do all that taping and stenciling! Well-done, Roe!! Hope your painter's butt has recovered!!
Amy
That's a LOT of work, but it turned out so amazing! What an effect! I love it!
VERY NICE JOB, IT TURNED OUT BEAUIFUL…I don't blame you for not wanting to ever cover it up. I stenciled a whole room once with a garden theme, picket fence, flowers, birds the whole bit…took me forever but it was beautiful when finished.
That truly has to be one of the neatest things I've ever seen. You did an amazing job…and, yes…it does look exactly like a "real" rug!!! Very talented, you are!!!
WOW, that is a LOT of work and it is STUNNING!!! I agree, you are not going to want to tile over this floor!!
Hugs,
Marsha
Hi,
I think it looks great! Now that's a labor of love! Great job.
XoXo
Unbelievable. Unbelievable. Unbelievable.
That looks great! Very impressive with the details and patience for this project.
That's better than ANY floor I've ever seen. Could that be any more magnifiscent? I think not! Well done.
That looks awesome!!!
I LOVE it….great job!
wow.
what a great job you did! it looks amazing. you may just want to make this your "permanent" floor!
The floor looks amazing! Absolutely gorgeous! I have a question though; how do you clean it without taking any paint off? Do you have to use a special cleaner?
WOW! amazing! i've never seen anything like this before! you did an amazing job!!!
-Sierra
Thanks ladies! 🙂
Stephanie – I just did the first coat of polyurethane and will do at least 1 more (maybe 2). That will protect the paint and I'll be able to wash the floor when needed. There is also a shower in this bathroom so it'll also be waterproof when all is said and done.
Have a great weekend everyone!
Roeshel
This is so neat! The pattern is beautiful!
You never cease to amaze me with your creativity and talent!
You are amazing! I love this floor. I'd never have guessed it wasn't tile. Just went through your before & afters and all the rooms you have finished are just beautiful!
It looks fantastic! Who would have thought that a little paint was all you would need. It does look time intensive, but well worth the effort. I can't wait to see it when it's all complete!
WOW!!!! Completely amazing….love the colors, the pattern, everything :O) I wouldn't worry about tiling either!
You did such a great job. They look like snowflakes !
Wow! Its gorgeous.
WOW! Great job – I wish I had half your patience!
Fabulous!!!
Roeshel I love it! I've painted floors before, hard work. I love them though. My painted floors always held up very well.
I also like painting floor mats, they are also very durable.
I just had to pick myself up off the floor – you did such an amazing job!!! So creative, and what a beautiful result!
Amazing job! We're obsessed with this project! Feel free to submit it as a Reader Redesign if you'd like. We'd be happy to share such a fantastic end result!

It looks SO awesome! You did a great job – you know how I LOVE painted floors! I'm just going to have to talk about you in my post today. 🙂
That is STUNNING! Thanks for sharing!
That looks great!
That is amazing!!! I need a new kitchen floor, I wonder if I can talk the hubby into this? It's so glam- why would you EVER want to cover it up with tile?? 😉 Great job!!!
Love it!! Of course I am a huge fan of the fleur de lis stencil you chose. Pretty brave of you to paint the floor, it looks like a great solution, let us know how it holds up.
That looks amazing. If that were my painted bathroom floor, I would find all sorts of excuses to bring people in and show it off.
You did a great job! It looks fantastic. You'd never know there was a plywood floor under there!

That is beautiful! I once *temporarily* painted a living room dining room sub flooring. I'm with you, once it was done, I never wanted to cover it. It was a huge job. You are very clever!

WOW. Your blog name does you justice. You NEED to be showing off the project. It looks seriously so good.
I.am.so.impressed. Seriously. It's beautiful. I've painted floors throughout the years, but never anything like this.
And stencils? Ughhh. I can design them, cut them, but use them? Nah.
Congratulations on a beautiful job.
Have you tried floorcloths? You'd love them. You can paint them on a table or tack them onto a wall. Saves your back and knees. I'd love to see what you come up with.
this looks fantastic! i love when projects require such little money and materials, but have a HUGE payoff like this. it's all about dedication and hardwork! 🙂 great job!
It looks AMAZING! Where did you get the stencil? I love the colors too. What a great idea and transformation!!

I featured you. Well-your floor, I didn't feature painters butt or dark circles–hee hee. I wanted to stay friends here.
I have been trying to convince my parents to let me do some things like this but they are nothing like me and make every decision so pain stakingly long-drives me crazy.

Just came across your inspiring blog, will definitely be stopping by again.

GREAT JOB!!!!
STENCIL TIPS: Yes I have used a technique that helps to keep the paint from bleeding under the stencil. We spray that back of our stencil with a light coat of adhesive. Place the stencil where you want it. Then paint with the ORIGINAL underneath paint. Let it dry at bit. This seals and keeps the darker paint from bleeding underneath. Hope that makes sense. You can email me at McCartyandCo@aol.com, if you need better instructions. Please put STENCIL in the subject line, as your email will go to my junk folder. 🙂
AGAIN, GREAT JOB!!! I love it.
This came out AMAZINGLY. U know what it reminds me of? Artwork that I have seem on Marble tiles at the Taj Mahal India and Alhambra – Spain. It has such an old world classic feel to me and I just LOVE it. congrats on a job WELL DONE.
Amazing job! Thank you so very much for sharing this wonderful idea.
Blessings,
Diana
I have floors like you ! I too decided to paint them until i could afford something more. I cut out spnges the size of a brick and made mine to look like a brick floor. I added 3 coats of clear to protect them against scrtches and they look great ! I love your design!

this is seriously an awesome idea!!!
i love it and i am definitely excited to try this one day.
seriously fabulous!
I have ugly carpet in my dining room and have not had the money to replace it with tile. It is so full of stain and grossness I am embarrased to have people over. Last week I told my husband I was going to pull it up and live with subfloors for the next 50 years if I had too. But now that I see how beautiful yours turned out painted that is what I am going to do! Thanks for the great idea!! Wish it had crossed my mind….ever!! 🙂
How is the paint holding up? It has been three years. I am only asking because we have a really nasty Saltillo tile floor in our kitchen and we are thinking that painting is our only option. We are just afraid that the result will turn into a nightmare. Any advice would be appreciated.
Hi Jake. It’s a lower traffic area than a kitchen and I painted directly onto a plywood subfloor. I’m can’t guarantee your results would be the same, but my bathroom floor is holding up perfectly {3 years and it’s still our ‘temporary’ fix but no issues and no plans to change it any time too soon…still loving it}. With there being a layer of primer, then porch and floor paint and having that sealed {I’d recommend non-yellowing polycrylic for lighter colors), it is just as durable as laminate in my opinion. We’ve even had water from the shower end up on the floor with no issues. Hope this helps a little. Good luck!
Wow! This is so beautiful. If I went to all that trouble, it would not be a temporary thing, it would be forever, or at least as long as it lasted and still looked nice.
Other than complementing you on the fantastic job, I also wanted to make a suggestion to anyone else who tries this. You made the comment about the paint smearing a bit when you did the stenciling. In the stencil department of places like Jo Ann’s, Hobby Lobby, Michael s, etc, they sell dabbers for stenciling. They look like sponges on a stick. They are round with a flat end. You daub the paint on by pressing downward instead of rolling it on and the paint will not smear and the stencil does not move on you. I have stenciled for years using complex stencils and many different colors. The daubing technique has not failed me yet.
Keep up the awesome work.
Blessings,
Andi J.
I really like what you did here it is very lovely!
thanks for sharing!
That is AWESOME – ya big show-off!!
I love the painted rug look. Thanks for sharing
