DIY Thanks Sign Tutorial

Happy Thanksgiving, friends! Hosting Thanksgiving dinner? It’s a bit late for this tutorial but there’s always filing it away for next year. Make up this easy sign to add the finishing touches on your Thanksgiving decor.

easy Thanksgiving sign tutorial @diyshowoff

What I used:

  • 12 x 24 piece of plywood
  • FrogTape®
  • paint and foam paint brush
  • wooden letters
  • hot glue (or wood glue and clamps or screws)

easy Thanksgiving sign tutorial @diyshowoff

What I did:

1. Paint wooden letters if needed and let dry. Mine came from the craft store dollar section pre-finished.

 2. I taped off stripes using FrogTape Multi-Surface. I made a larger stripe in the middle to create a darker background since my letters are lighter in color.

3. Using a plastic card, I burnished the edges of the tape to ensure crisp clean lines.

easy Thanksgiving sign tutorial @diyshowoff

4. Next I applied a coat of paint.

easy Thanksgiving sign tutorial @diyshowoff

5. While paint was still wet, I carefully removed the FrogTape. Then let the paint dry.

6. I secured my letters using hot glue.

I love this quick and easy piece to add to my Thanksgiving vignette:

This past year, Young Living essential oils became a big part of our family’s lifestyle and I’m so thankful that at a time when I was feeling helpless and praying for answers that I was introduced to Young Living products. We’re more health conscious —> empowered, taking charge of our health, maintaining wellness, feeling better and happier, making smarter choices when it comes to our environment and what we consume.

5 essential oils for Thanksgiving

Abundance™ is created to enhance the frequency of the harmonic magnetic energy field that surrounds us. This higher frequency creates what is called “the law of attraction,” which refers to the things we attract to ourselves. Abundance opens us to a wealth of possibilities.

Faith™ essential oil blend – This confidence-boosting blend enhances spiritual influences, promoting deeper meditation and a greater sense of spiritual awareness and connectedness.

Gathering™ helps overcome the chaotic energy that bombards our everyday life and clouds our focus, thus diverting us from the path leading to higher achievement. Gathering combines galbanum and frankincense oils from resins used by Moses for incense with sandalwood to help gather our emotional and spiritual forces so we can achieve greater unity of purpose.

Gratitude™ is a soothing blend of therapeutic-grade essential oils designed to elevate the spirit, calm emotions, and bring relief to the body while helping to foster a grateful attitude.

Harmony™ is an exquisite blend that promotes physical and emotional well-being by bringing harmonic balance to the energy centers of the body. The liberating, balancing, and calming essential oils in this blend open us to new possibilities while contributing to an overall feeling of well-being.

Do you host Thanksgiving dinner or attend as a guest? Add essential oils to your pumpkin pie recipe, apple cider and find creative ways to incorporate dietary approved (I only recommend Young Living) essential oils into other dishes as well. Add small samples to place settings. Share your supply with others as needed (with all of the good food…essential oils supportive of digestive health are great to have on hand).

Complete the ‘mood’ by swapping out chemical filled candles for essential oils with amazing health benefits. Diffuse Light the Fire (perfect for fall)…there so many options to fill your home with healthy holiday scents. Young Living essential oils are so loved and so amazing that they’re sponsoring my blog! Thank you, friends! What a blessing! Interested in joining me? Once you experience essential oils, you’ll not only be embracing wellness (we feel better than ever with this lifestyle change!), you’ll make new friends, be a part of an awesome team and have tons of support/resources so you aren’t left clueless. You’ll also learn of the generous business opportunity that has the potential to create financial freedom if you want it, but no obligation! I’d love for you to join us! Silhouette Portrait Giveaway

The winner is: Rebecca!

One of you will get an early Christmas!

Big things comes in small packages! There’s a lot of power and creative assistance packed into this little machine! I’m hosting a Silhouette Portrait giveaway this week! So fun!!! One lucky DIY Show Off winner will receive:

Silhouette Portrait giveaway @DIYShowOff

What is a Silhouette Portrait?

It’s an electronic cutting tool for personal use, similar to the Cameo but on a smaller scale. It’s like a home printer and it plugs into your computer with a simple USB cable. However, instead of printing it uses a small blade to cut paper, cardstock, vinyl, fabric and more up to 8 inches wide and 10 feet long. The machine also has the ability to register and cut printed materials.

See more details at Silhouette America. I seriously love my Silhouette. I use it all of the time, my favorite being vinyl stencils for DIY signs but for lots of other projects too {my Silhouette projects}.

Thanksgiving decorating {thrift store art print becomes Thanksgiving reminder}…

We don’t host Thanksgiving dinner. We’re lucky to be guests. So, Thanksgiving decor is minimal at the DIY Show Off home but I did want to share how I turned a $4 print called “Nostalgic Autumn” by Eric Sloane into something I love hanging in our home this time of the year. Our thrift stores have huge framed outdated prints in “fair” condition on occasion. It’s not something I’d normally choose, but the the colors and autumn farm theme is perfect for our dining room. I decided that adding the words “Give Thanks” ensures that once a year, I will hang this print. And every time I look at the words “give thanks”, I take a moment to thank God for our many blessings.

Give Thanks vignette

What I did:

easy DIY Thanksgiving wall art

  1. Old framed print {thrift store}. Mine wasn’t in the best of shape. There were scratches on the print, etc. but we embrace imperfection around here, therefore it’s “perfect”. {You may want to check to see if your print has value before altering it.}
  2. Decide where lettering will be placed using a level or ruler.
  3. Apply a piece of FrogTape Delicate Surface. It works on freshly painted surfaces (24 hours) so it’s a good option for sticking lightly to an old art print. I did not rub the tape to adhere since I’m not painting. I’m using it as a guide/straight line.
  4. Write quote or words with chalk or use a stencil.
  5. Go over chalk words with a Sharpie/permanent marker. Be care of smudging with your hand, work from left to right {or I guess if you’re left handed, it might make sense to work from right to left…which ever way your hand won’t smudge the area you’re working on}.
  6. Carefully peel away FrogTape. Continue drawing letters that fall below the level line, wipe away chalk.

I love the every day reminder to “give Thanks”, especially this time of year. What do you think? Have you seen large art prints at the thrift store or yard sales that with a little DIY touch or accent would work for your seasonal decor?

3rd Annual DIY Holiday Highlight Party #1

It’s that time of year…time to start thinking of the approaching holidays. This year I’ve decided to host a 3rd annual DIY Holiday Highlights linky party since the past couple of years have been such a success…and we all love having DIY holiday ideas from blog friends grouped together, right?

DIY Holiday Highlights

The party welcomes DIY related to Thanksgiving and after that, our family celebrates Christmas so that’s what you’ll see from me. My brother and sister-in-law host our Thanksgiving family gathering every year so no prep at our home, other than putting together a yummy dish to share. And I’m not ready to decorate for Christmas just yet, but I am already thinking of holiday crafts and handmade gifts, how about you?

To kick off this year’s holiday event, I actually did decorate a little for Thanksgiving. But then discovered I left my camera’s battery charger on vacation. {I should probably return to Florida to retrieve it, especially since it went from 70 degrees yesterday to in the 30s today. #sonotafanofcoldweather} So I tried the ipad camera, but not much luck. Here’s a look at what I’ll share more of when my new battery charger arrives…

I went through last year’s DIY Holiday Highlights parties and chose from favorite linked up oldies but goodies for Thanksgiving that I find just as inspiring this year as last. Please pin from the original source by clicking the link. I know these ladies would love your visit, comment and pin from their archives.

You’ll be seeing it in my Christmas decorating this year. She also shows you how to make your own ornament wreath. {Thanks, Amanda!}
