Blend: I blended both parts listed below INDIVIDUALLY in my Magic Bullet blender.

RASPBERRY PUREÉ

1 c. frozen raspberries // 2 tbs. water // splash of sweetener to taste (I used agave syrup)

LIME eo infused YOGURT

1 c. organic vanilla yogurt // 10 drops give or take Young Living Lime Vitality essential oil // optional: tsp. lime juice

Assemble: I used silicone popsicle molds but you could use stainless steel OR paper dixie cups

Add a few fresh raspberries,

fill mold 3/4 way with lime/yogurt mixture, top off with raspberry puree. Don’t forget to insert the wooden popsicle sticks / handles.

Freeze: I froze mine for about 24 hours (made the day before, frozen overnight and eaten the next afternoon) then removed them from the silicone molds. A double recipe shown below in the freezer. Recipe above makes 4 pops.

Backyard Wedding Ideas

One of my best friends is getting married this summer! Celeste and I have been friends since 7th grade. We won’t discuss how many years ago that was! haha! Her wedding will be small, no more than 45 guests on August 20th. Our gazebo is the perfect spot for a for a small intimate wedding ceremony.

Looking for summer entertaining ideas? Check out the #michaelsmakers summer party challenge @diyshowoff

Michaels’ Makers June Challenge: Summer Party.  A backyard wedding is the perfect fit for the June challenge. I got a big head start with ideas by browsing the aisles at Michaels. Celeste’s wedding colors are turquoise and purple and I’m having so much fun adding pops of color to our lush landscape.

pretty backyard wedding ideas for celebrating your special day outdoors @diyshowoff #michaelsmakers

It’s always a challenge for me to decorate for someone else, infusing THEIR style rather than my own. Since this is Celeste’s special day, I wanted to add decorative touches that reflect her style. Here are a few ideas from my ‘dress rehearsal’ over the weekend. But I have plenty of time to tweak, add, take away and work on creating a setting for making happy memories. There will be a white tent for shade and chairs for comfort…well as comfy as folding chairs can be; hors d’oeuvres and bubbles too and more planters, flowers and landscape work as we get into summer. In the meantime, here’s my starting point and a few ideas for hosting a small outdoor wedding ceremony.

pretty backyard wedding ideas for celebrating your special day outdoors @diyshowoff #michaelsmakers

Decorations:

• Aqua/turquoise painted flower pots (or tire planter and chandelier planter in my case) filled with purple flowers. I do this every summer anyway so coordinating my flowers and planters with her wedding colors works well. Last year I did reds, yellows and oranges. This year it’s all about shades of purple in aqua and turquoise planters and pots.

pretty backyard wedding ideas for celebrating your special day outdoors @diyshowoff #michaelsmakers pretty backyard wedding ideas for celebrating your special day outdoors @diyshowoff #michaelsmakers

• Decorative Letter Accent: I LOVE these circle wooden letters. I painted a “J” in her wedding colors (aged with a trans-tint dye technique). I wasn’t able to capture how colorful this truly is in real life in a photo. But it’s a pretty personalized gift that doubles as a decorative accent.

pretty backyard wedding ideas for celebrating your special day outdoors @diyshowoff #michaelsmakers

• Michaels’ has SO many fun party decorations to choose from. Paper lanterns, paper fans, tissue paper honeycomb ornaments and poufs. I love the colors! I displayed them in the grape arbor/gazebo for this blog post but they’ll decorate a white tent with outdoor lights on the big day. Take a look at the outdoor lighting options Michaels’ provides too: pretty string lights, flameless candles, and my favorite solar options!

pretty backyard wedding ideas for celebrating your special day outdoors @diyshowoff #michaelsmakers pretty backyard wedding ideas for celebrating your special day outdoors @diyshowoff #michaelsmakers pretty backyard wedding ideas for celebrating your special day outdoors @diyshowoff #michaelsmakers

• Banner: Check out the wedding aisle at Michaels’ for adorable “Mr. & Mrs.” and other wedding banners. Mine is a DIY “LOVE” banner at the top of a curved gazebo frame … perfect for a photo opportunity. I’m going to layer it with a lavender and light aqua rag banner behind the l-o-v-e letters, around the top of the gazebo.

pretty backyard wedding ideas for celebrating your special day outdoors @diyshowoff #michaelsmakers pretty backyard wedding ideas for celebrating your special day outdoors @diyshowoff #michaelsmakers

• Silk flowers around the grape arbor will add some color and romance to the greenery.

Chalkboard signs: So many to choose from. I love this framed chalkboard easel for instructing guests to take their “thank you gift”. One near the road to direct guests. One with their names and wedding date. I like having chalkboards on hand for labeling, designating areas, instructions, etc. for guests at parties.

pretty backyard wedding ideas for celebrating your special day outdoors @diyshowoff #michaelsmakers

Party Favors: Michaels’ is the place to go for wedding favors. The best selection of little containers (glass jars with flip top lids or corks, heart shaped tins, cute cardboard boxes) for candy or in our case, lavender bath salts.

pretty backyard wedding ideas for celebrating your special day outdoors @diyshowoff #michaelsmakers pretty backyard wedding ideas for celebrating your special day outdoors @diyshowoff #michaelsmakers

Lavender Bath Salt recipe: Mix 1/4 cup of epsom salt with 3-5 drops of lavender essential oil into a mason jar. Shake and pour into glass container, top with a “thank you” sticker (included with the glass containers), embellish with coordinating decorative tape and ribbon.

Since it’s an outdoor ceremony in August, I’m also going to create some hand held paper fans for guests by printing the bride & groom’s names, wedding date, a poem or bible verse onto card stock or scrapbook paper, cutting out a pretty and functional shape then glueing to a large wooden popsicle stick.

Flowers: Silk flowers are budget-friendly and long lasting. If not for the bride’s bouquet, a great option for the “bouquet toss” at the reception, decor or a pretty accent to a table.

pretty backyard wedding ideas for celebrating your special day outdoors @diyshowoff #michaelsmakers

Unity Candle: Michaels’ has a section designated to a stunning collection of unity candles or create your own set from the candle aisle with a pillar and two tapered candle sticks. Crystal holders and a beautiful charger complete the look.

pretty backyard wedding ideas for celebrating your special day outdoors @diyshowoff #michaelsmakers pretty backyard wedding ideas for celebrating your special day outdoors @diyshowoff #michaelsmakers pretty backyard wedding ideas for celebrating your special day outdoors @diyshowoff #michaelsmakers

Refreshments: An August outdoor afternoon wedding ceremony calls for serving ice water and a few refreshments. A special occasion calls for glass. I love these mini glass jugs and coordinating straws. Any suggestions for finger foods? Dinner and reception are at another location later in the afternoon.

Feeding Flowers

How does your garden grow? It’s nearly August and it feels like summer has finally arrived. Hot days! I normally wouldn’t want to answer questions about my flowers this time of year. But this year is very different! Remember the gorgeous flowers I planted in the pallet garden in the spring (here)? I’m proud to say that they’re still producing blooms and happiness on the patio! I began with using my Miracle-Gro Liquafeeder to fertilize my flower gardens.

to

Did you know that feeding your flowers all summer long will provide more, bigger and longer lasting blooms as well as help plants thrive throughout the heat of the hot summer months? I didn’t. It’s not something I’ve ever done. Perhaps the reason for my past flower-fails. Now you know too!

Just add the Miracle-Gro Liquafeeder to an outdoor spigot. Attach the hose. Pop in the Liquafeed, push the bottle upright, turn the dial to “feed” and you’re ready to go!

I’ve been giving my lovely flowers a yummy treat of Bloom Booster via the Miracle-Gro Liquafeeder every 7-14 days.

The flowers in the pallet garden as well as several flower pots, window boxes and container gardens are ALL bursting with blooms! One I even thought…”oh, no flowers, that plant’s done, but at least the greenery is still all healthy” only to wake up a day or two later to another “bloom explosion”! No doubt the “Bloom Booster” works! If you can water your flowers, you can feed them too! Easy peasy!

And where you simply see green above? There are so many buds just waiting to bloom! Want a few more months of pretty blooms from your summer flowers? Now you know what to do too. Good luck!

If it waters, now it feeds with Miracle-Gro® LiquaFeed® Universal Feeder. It’s a great tool to help you reach your gardening goals by providing the essential nutrients your plants need to thrive all season long.

Berry Grapefruit Yogurt Smoothie Popsicle Recipe

Summer time is the best time of the year for cold refreshing treats, isn’t it? And this girl lives 1/2 mi. from Dairy Queen. But I really should be looking for something a little on the healthier side so the other day I turned my kitchen counters into a test kitchen and whipped up this delicious berry-grapefruit-yogurt smoothie and popsicles. SO GOOD!

Ingredients:

one recipe two treats smoothies and popsicles @diyshowoff

  • 1 cup of vanilla almond milk
  • 1 cup of organic greek yogurt
  • 10-15 drops of grapefruit Vitality essential oil (Grapefruit Vitality essential oil includes the naturally occurring constituent limonene and is a great way to enhance the flavor of water and recipes).
  • 2 oz. of Ningxia Red (Enjoy NingXia Red daily to energize, fortify, and revitalize the body and support overall health and wellness, from head to toe.)
  • 1 cup of organic red raspberries (frozen)
  • 8 ice cubes

Flower Pallet Garden

This year I wanted to give my pallet garden a new look. It’s the third year we’ve been using it and it’s still in great shape. The Project Garden campaign was the perfect opportunity for a little assistance. Since we entertain outdoors often in the summer months, I really wanted to add color and pretty blooms to our patio area rather than herbs this time around.

Miracle-Gro’s® latest product innovation, Liquafeed® Universal Feeder, makes feeding as easy as watering.

We simply installed the Liquafeed® Universal to our outdoor spigot, then screwed on our hose. Then just pop in a bottle of MiracleGro feed.

Down position when not in use. Up when feeding.

There’s also a handy water/feed switch so the Liquafeed® Universal can remain in place.

We planted the flowers then soaked the soil with using the Liquafeed® Universal attached to the hose on the mist or shower setting, the same as when I’m watering.

I water my flowers every evening then flip the switch to feed every other week for bigger, more beautiful plants. Feed every 7-14 days with Miracle-Gro All Purpose Plant Food or Miracle-Gro Bloom Booster Flower Food to help plants grow bigger and more beautiful versus unfed plants.

Flowers can be quite the investment and a risky one if your track record isn’t so great with plants, like mine. I want to make sure these beauties thrive all season long!

Oh my goodness! Gorgeous!

Spilling out like flower gardens on a European balcony but it’s really just a vertical pallet garden in western PA. 😉

I am in love with these bright colored impatiens and happy begonias! Stunning, right?

Get tips for making your own vertical pallet garden tutorial HERE.

Do you have a green thumb? Any helpful tips for maintaining beautiful plants? My new favorite flowers are impatiens. How about you?

Tie Dye Party Fun

Celebrate the start of summer with snacks, sweets and some tie dye fun!

Tie Dye Party invitation #tiedyeyoursummer @michaelsstores @diyshowoff

I had the opportunity to participate in trying out the Tulip One-Step Tie-Dye Party kit and cute FREE exclusive tie dye printables from Lillian Hope Designs. It’s summer time! I’m always up for hosting a fun themed event. Toss in tie dye, kids, a pretty day at the park and who can resist? To be perfectly honest, I’ve actually never tie dyed anything so I almost felt like one of the kids!

I partnered with Dana from Parties & Playdates to get a few kids together to kick off celebrating summer. With everything in the kit and free printables, it was easy to throw together a party. Everything needed to tie dye comes in the kit including 18 bottles of dye, 6 gloves, 6 t-shirts (kids large), plastic table cloth, 90 rubber bands and instructions for creating cool designs. And there a TON of cute tie dye themed party printables at TieDyeYourSummer.com. Here are just a few that we utilized:

Invitations: personalize to “get this party started”!

Tie Dye Party invitation #tiedyeyoursummer @michaelsstores @diyshowoff

Cupcake wrappers and mini tie dyed-shirt cutouts: I served gluten free fun-fetti cupcakes with lemon buttercream frosting. We had organic veggies, dip and chips too.

Rectangle flags and sandwich/snack bag toppers: to coordinate bubble sticks and punch balloons favors.

Party Banner and tent cards: print and assemble the cute banner, add some tulle to create a pretty backdrop.

We gave guests the option of bringing their own dye-able item and kept the extra t-shirts from the kit on hand too. 45 minutes before the party began, I simply added water to the powdered dye in the bottles provided and shook them to mix. Instant tie dye party!

Tie Dye Party invitation #tiedyeyoursummer @michaelsstores @diyshowoff

Tie dye can be accomplished with damp or dry shirts. Our guests started with dampening their shirts at the water fountain.

The kit includes instructions for creating spirals, sunbursts, stripes, ombre, crumple, bullseye, heart and more using the rubber bands included in the kit.

Tie Dye Party invitation #tiedyeyoursummer @michaelsstores @diyshowoff

Wearing plastic gloves, everyone got creative with tie dying their shirts by applying different colors of dye to the fabric after rubber bands were placed.

18 vibrant colors.

So much fun!

Then we wrapped the creations in plastic wrap and tossed them in a ziplock bag and attached a ‘wash and care’ printable: Let sit 6-8 hours or overnight for more vibrant colors. Rinse until excess dye is removed. Remove rubber bands. Wash and dry as instructed.

Tie Dye Party #tiedyeyoursummer @michaelsstores @diyshowoff

I was surprised with how easy it was to pull together a party with the Tulip One-Step Kit and free printables. Set up and clean up were simple. With the exception of a few drips of red on the pavilion concrete (which faded fairly quickly), dye was contained to the plastic tablecloth, rolled up and easily discarded. Quick clean up! The kids? Not too bad. Be sure to instruct parents to dress children in old play clothes just in case. You remember: kool aid mustaches, bandaid stickies, half worn temporary tattoos, popcicle drips, dirty bare feet, grass stains and a bit of tie dye = summer time and being a kid!

The results:

Homemade Lemonade with Essential Oil

refreshing lemonade using Young Living lemon essential oil at diyshowoff.com

There are several essential oil lemonade recipes but after some trial and error, this one is my favorite. I made it for a recent Young Living Essential Oils class and since a few have asked for it, here it is!

And the entire thing disappeared! Refreshing, fresh squeezed without the fake mix taste. Color is darker due to the blue agave.

Young Living Lemon Essential Oil Lemonade Recipe

  • 1 gal. of filtered water
  • juice of two organic lemons
  • juice of one organic lime
  • about 15 oz. of organic blue agave (test as you go to adjust the sweetness to your liking)
  • 10-12 drops of Young Living lemon essential oil
  • lemon and lime slices for garnish

Serve in glass with ice. Rather than add ice directly to the lemonade which waters it down, I serve ice in a separate container.

Optional: I also served it up with lime garnish for glasses (rub lime around glass rim and dip in colored sugar). Offer a small bit of blueberry juice or raspberry liquor for guests to create their own summer cooler.

Beverage Recipe Vinyl Decal

Summer time in our home = lots of entertaining and hauling out the fancy glass beverage server for homemade lemonade is a must. Labeling glass containers lets guests know exactly what they’re consuming.

Beverage Recipe Vinyl Decal Label Tutorial

DIY lemonade recipe vinyl decal on beverage glass

Materials:

  • Glass beverage server
  • Happy Crafters Glossy Adhesive Vinyl (mint)
  • Transfer paper

Tools Needed:

  • Vinyl cutter (I use a Silhouette Cameo)
  • Scissors

What I did:

Open up Silhouette Studio Designer software. Choosing the font tool, write up a label. Simply the name of the beverage or ice. I included my lemonade recipe too.

3. Once the white paint was dry, I applied FrogTape® Shape Tape™ (I used the chevron pattern) in three strips, starting with the top, then the bottom, then centering the third between the top and bottom.

4. Using my thumbnail, I burnished the edges of the tape to activate the PaintBlock® Technology.

Odds and Ends – Happy 4th of July!

Happy Independence Day, US friends! The 4th of July is probably my second most favorite holiday (right behind Christmas). I love my country!

Our day will be filled with work. But we’ll be celebrating the 4th on the 6th. With the exception of seeing fireworks tonight. How about you?

We’re celebrating by prepping for a BBQ this weekend.

And a Happy 3rd Birthday to our ragdoll girl, Lalka, who was born on the 4th of July in the USA. Don’t let that sweet innocent face fool you. She definitely lived every minute of her terrible two’s to the fullest by climbing on shelves, tearing through the house, finding her favorite crinkly ball only at nights right under the bed, bullying her new sister-dog Rosie by stealthily sneaking up behind her or popping out from dark rooms.

Summer BBQ Menu and Summer Recipe Inspiration Link Party

What? Recipes at DIY Show Off? Well, cooking is a do-it-yourself process, right? In our home, my husband does the cooking (not because I can’t but because he really enjoys it). We host a lot of dinner parties, summer cook outs and picnics and recently held a Mother’s Day BBQ (see the beautiful chandelier planters our guests and I made). Oops…back to HIS passion FOOD! and the reason for today’s blog post…our BBQ menu and a Summer Recipe Inspiration Link Party. Our BBQ menu included:

Summer BBQ Menu

We’re new to sharing recipes (and taking food photos too). Let us know if you have any questions.

Pictured above:

  1. Pulled Pork Sandwiches (recipe below)
  2. Fresh Crunchy Vinegar Cole Slaw (recipe below)
  3. Fresh baked buns (add pulled pork and coleslaw)
  4. Dill Red Potato Salad (recipe below)

Smoked Pulled Pork
Serves 15
This recipe utilizes a Big Green Egg for smoking which makes the smoking process easier, with only loading charcoal one time and cooking for up to 18 hours or more.

Pulled Pork Ingredients
  1. 3-5 lb. pork shoulder
  2. 1 bottle of Allegro Marinade
  3. 1 bottle of Heinz Hot Relish (12 oz)
Smoking Ingredients
  1. Royal Oak Natural Lump Charcoal
  2. 6-8 hickory chunks soaked in water and 1/2 cup vinegar.
This is what I do
  1. Using a jaccard* or sharp knife, poke multiple holes in the pork shoulder, top and bottom. This will help the marinade penetrate the meat. Place pork into large resealable bag. Add Allegro marinade and squeeze out the air in the bag. Allow to marinate for 3 days.
  2. Ready the fire on your smoker. I use Royal Oak Natural Lump Charcoal. Get the smoker to a temperature of 220 degrees. Use about 6-8 hickory chunks soaked (covered) in water and about 1/2 cup of vinegar. Place hickory chunks on the coals. Place a large turkey roasting pan filled with water on the grid above the coals. Next place the pork shoulder on a grid above the water. Insert a remote meat thermometer set to go off when the meat reaches 190 degrees. Estimate time to be approximately 11.5 hours.
  3. After that time frame, wrap meat in foil and continue cooking for another 3-5 hours when temperature reaches 220 degrees.
  4. Remove pork shoulder and pull apart. Add about 1/2 bottle of the hot relish. Mix and pull and mix.
  5. Serve on buns with vinegar cole slaw.

CRAFTS:

How to make a distressed chevron sign

I wanted something bold to add to our summer mantel and decided a large distressed wooden chevron garden sign was the perfect focal point. how to make a chevron sign

Materials:

  • scrap wood planks (I used two 1x4s and two 1x5s)
  • furring strip (cut into 2 pieces a little smaller than the width of my four 1x4s)
  • Gorilla wood glue
  • 3 colors of paint (I used acrylic craft paint in white, green and brown)
  • glaze (or watered down brown paint)
  • Frog Tape Delicate (I used the 1.41 in. wide)
  • vinyl stencil (I created mine using my Silhouette Cameo)
  • (2) saw tooth picture hangers

Tools:

  • Sander (or sanding block)
  • Paint brushes
  • Clamps
  • Saw

Distressed Chevron Sign Tutorial: 1. I cut my scrap wood planks to measure 32 inches each. cutting boards 2. Using Gorilla wood glue, I glued my planks together, clamped and let dry. glue and clamp boards 3. I glued two furring strips to the back for extra protection and added weights while they dried. You could also screw the furring strips into each plank.

4. Once all of the glue was dried, I sanded the edges of my boards. sanding edges of wood plank sign

5. Next I gave my sign a coat of white paint all over using a dry brush technique. dry brush white paint 6. Once the paint was dry, I chose FrogTape Delicate (for freshly painted surfaces) and created a chevron pattern. I used a small piece of the tape to create spaces. chevron Frogtape design FrogTape Delicate - chevron pattern 7. Once my FrogTape design was set, I rubbed down the edges and gave the untaped areas a coat of green paint. painting a chevron pattern 8. Then a coat of glaze, brushed on, wiped off. I love that it gives it a summer grass/garden dirt feel. glazing chevron sign 9. As soon as I finished applying the glaze, I removed my tape and let the sign dry.

10. I love having a Silhouette Cameo (affiliate link below for a great deal) because I can create my own custom vinyl stencils, decals or lettering as needed. I created an cut out a garden quote with my Cameo and using transfer paper, applied the stencil to my sign (I also saved the letters as stickers to make another sign). As soon as I applied the last coat of paint to each letter, I removed my vinyl stencil and let the sign dry. chevron garden plank sign 13.
