Hallway Paint Refresh

Remember our bathroom remodel? So light and pretty!

LampsPlus Monroe Adjustable Wall Sconce

All of a sudden, the beige hallway felt drab in comparison. The yellowed color just seemed “dirty” next to all that glam. Hey! It’s nothing a quick coat of paint can’t cure!

Hallway before:

A lot doorways in one small area means a lot of trim in this old house so FrogTape® MultiSurface is a must have for creating crisp clean lines, especially in hard to reach spots.

Tape off trim in hard to reach areas.

The difference is subtle when all is said and done but you can see how much brighter the new wall color is during the progress…

While the second coat of paint is still wet, carefully remove FrogTape by pulling away from paint.

I love how clean and fresh it looks and since there is no natural light in this space, the new light color makes a huge difference to me.

Small Apartment Nursery Nook Reveal

I’ve enjoyed creating two nursery spaces the last couple of months. The first one was the guest room/nursery space in my own home (see links below).

Guest Room/Nursery reveal @diyshowoff

Today is my daughter’s birthday! Happy Birthday, Ali! Creating a space for baby is one of her birthday gifts. Fun!

This one is a temporary space (functioning as a nursery until spring of next year). I call this sweet little room the nursery nook since it’s located in a small one bedroom apartment. Until I rescue photos from my old laptop, this is the only before picture I could find of the space:

bedroom-before

This part of the bedroom was made into a ‘dressing room’ type closet space a few years ago since storage is limited (I promise I’ll dig out the small apartment before and after pictures in the near future) but now part of the one bedroom is a cute little nursery nook for a soon to arrive little boy.

As you can see, it’s not super baby themed since it’s a temporary/rental space. We’re saving a fun boy-themed nursery design for next summer.

Guest Room + Nursery Makeover Reveal

Nursery Guest Room Reveal @diyshowoff

You guys! There is a new little grand child arriving in just a couple of weeks! #EXCITING! So of course, this first time grandma needs to convert the guest room to allow space for baby sleep overs. The before is pretty enough…

It needed a good freshening up. And I’m sure that I’ll still be playing ‘doll house’ in this room, moving things around, adding a little something here and there but for now…it’s guest AND baby ready!

I started with a mood/design board to get a feel of how things would look, things I liked and things I already currently had on hand.

There’s still a bit of a to-do list:

  1. A new (used) dresser…of course I plan on giving it a DIY makeover (just have to find one first).
  2. Light fixture: I’d love to swap the existing for something gold.
  3. DIY wall art for above the headboard.
  4. Replacement casters for the portable crib.
  5. I’m thinking that the weathered green oar would be adorable mounted horizontally with some coat hooks.
  6. Of course you know me, there will probably be TONS of baby related DIY coming in the future too.

There are fairy lights strung between the curtains above the crib. The arrow near the rocker has a battery operated lights and a switch. There are fairy lights hanging around the top of the bed frame. So plenty of soft “night light” after sunset.

Do you spy the Young Living Aria Ultrasonic diffuser? Definitely a splurge but oh my goodness…this diffuser combines the latest in ultrasonic technology with a variety of useful features. The included remote lets you choose from a selection of soothing, built-in sounds or enjoy the multicolored LED lights. With the built-in speakers, you can plug in your own personal music player and enjoy the music of your choice. Diffuse some peace-inducing calming essential oils and it’s like a spa. I’m moving into the guest room!

I haven’t had the chance to empty the room, roll the original back up and unroll/install or see the condition of the replacement but fingers crossed that it’s “new and stain-free”~ I’m optimistic and pleased with the service I received despite my original disappointment.

Drop Zone Makeover {Back to School Organization} Before & After

It’s back to school season! It’s the perfect time to re-think the “drop zone” to organize back packs, shoes, coats…all the things that get unloaded when walking in the door.

before and after back door drop zone area makeover

As a part of the Lowe’s Creative Ideas team, one of this month’s challenge options included a back to school organization theme. Since my sister is still recovering and her little one will be  starting pre-school in a couple of weeks (AND her birthday is right around the corner),  I surprised her with a 6-hour back door entryway makeover.

Here are the before pictures: this little space just wasn’t functioning well as an organized drop zone with storage options.

back entryway makeover before back entryway makeover before back entryway makeover before coat rack before

First up, we emptied the area then I freshened up the walls with paint to give the space more light and a bigger neutral vibe. I used Valspar Signature (Paint + Primer). Color is silver leaf. Isn’t it pretty? Just a touch of a gray-blue tint. Best part? It covered up the raspberry-painted paneling in just two coats.

back entryway makeover before back entryway makeover before back entryway makeover before

While the paint was drying, I assembled the furniture consisting of a storage bench and cubby shelves. I even had a helper…

back entryway makeover before

Once the paint was dry (use a fan to speed along the drying process), I added some coat hooks for back packs, coats and hats. Using a level (and screwing into the walls studs/using wall anchors) to secure the coat racks.

Since the previous window treatment on the door wasn’t a good fit, I replaced the curtain on the door with a new roman shade.

Once more, the before when opening the door…

And now…the room feels bigger, fresher, prettier.

My nephew started adding his shoes to bins and hanging his backpacks the minute we finished up. No more hunting for lost shoes and his backpack is ready to go. He also grabbed his ‘camera’ to take a few shots of his own.

Have you been following along the Craft Rooms and Spaces series hosted by Angie at Country Chic Cottage? It’s so fun seeing where bloggers create, getting ideas and motivation to maybe initiate some spring cleaning and organization in your own space?

Thanks to Angie for the invitation to participate! I had no choice but to finally put things away. Here’s my chaotic craft room when I agreed to join the series…

One first thing you’ll notice is this room is PACKED full. But when everything is organized and tidy and in it’s place, its a great space for getting creative. The old farmhouse dining room table serves as a great workspace.

The skirt is sewn into simple custom sized rod pocket panels and attached using tension rods on 3 sides. I’m ready for an updated fabric/pattern but what I really love about the skirt is that it hides even more storage (things not so pretty to display, boxes of supplies and such) under the table.

DIYShowOff Craft Room

The walls are lined with inexpensive shelving units, some tucked for a perfect fit against the back wall, providing TONS of storage and organization. A string of lights adds a fun festive feel.

I recently added some shelves to the window for plants to bring some “life” to the space.

I love that this window sits low, close to the floor. The shelves add a little privacy (second floor) but still allow for lots of natural light to flood the room.

I don’t remember where I got the light fixture (maybe Urban Outfitters years ago) but I really like the cage and sometimes clip cards or paint swatches there.

The walls are filled with a mix of fun frames collected over time, some with family photos, others just random art or thrift store finds and continues to grow here and there.

Bathroom Makeover

The other day I shared the before and after bathroom transformation. I’ve gone from sitting and staring all day long at our recently finished open pantry (makeover here) to wanting to sleep in my new peaceful bathroom. Since the bathroom had was a nightmare before, ANYTHING would look good after. This is what we got with this old farmhouse…

Before – yikes! bathroom makeover before

And this is the potential I saw. I’m in love with the soft peaceful ‘after’ results! Bathroom Makeover

Bathroom Makeover Details at DIYShowOff

Paint: Those walls! Believe me, I did a good scrubbing but is there any better way to really clean up walls than applying a fresh coat of paint? Love this color! Valspar Pale Linen: Depending on light, sometimes it has a soothing blue tint, sometimes more of a gray/white tone but definitely a tranquil light blue color.

Vanity: The gorgeous Huntshire vanity with marble countertop and Talia faucet set from Virtu USA is the luxurious center of attention! Check out the beautiful detail and gorgeous espresso color.

Metallics: Mixing the silver finishes like the brushed nickel faucets, polished nickel sconces, polished nickel vanity knobs, satin nickel curtain rod add just the right amount of bling!

The vanity comes with beautiful antique gold hardware which I’ll re-use on another piece of furniture since I swapped them out for these beautiful polished nickel knobs.

Pottery Barn Bevel Mirror: Go big or go home! {Heavy! Molly bolts included.} The mirror’s beveled mirror frame is the perfect glamorous accessory reflecting light and the illusion of more space into this small bathroom.

Lighting: Drool-worthy. ::sigh:: Thanks to LampsPlus for the stunning lighting! {Hudson Valley Monroe polished nickel adjustable wall lights} These are just the icing on the cake, aren’t they? Definitely my most favorite fixture in my home!

Floor: I did this all by myself! Would you believe they’re vinyl tiles? Easy to install and grout (use grout for vinyl) gives it a look so similar to real marble but without the maintenance or cost and installed in just a few hours! Check back for the tutorial.

Pantry Before and After

First project of 2014! A pantry makeover, before and after… DIYShowOff Open Pantry before and after makeover

Did that space actually grow larger and taller with the addition of shelves or is it just me?

Well…the pantry was actually complete December 1st, 2012 (remember I showed a sneak peek in the Christmas home tour?)…but since I’m just sharing the reveal now and still tweaking…let’s call it the first awesome DIYShowOff project to kick off DIY in 2014! When we removed a pantry closet in our kitchen to move the refrigerator (more on that here), it decreased valuable storage space. What were we thinking?! What to do? Well, after much thought, the solution was to utilize an odd room/hallway to create more storage space. Lucky for us, that space exists in our home right behind the kitchen. Jackpot! Kismet. Fate. Whatever – it was finally time to make it happen!

The space is bigger than a hallway but six (6!) doorways make it too awkward to be a room. There are doorways opening to the kitchen, dining room, living room, old cellar stairwell, enclosed porch (original front door) and half bathroom. We walk through that room a gazillion times a day.

It’s approximately 6 ft. wide and 9 ft. long with 9 ft. ceilings. Ever since previous owners enclosed the front porch and re-routed the front door, this poor former entryway has been feeling forgotten. Perfect for some custom DIY industrial pipe shelving and a new job description as ‘open pantry’.

Where is all started: The idea to one day call this area a pantry formed three years ago after drooling over this awesome pantry by Emerson Made on Design Sponge. Emerson Made open pantry

And then falling in love with this cool pipe shelving I spied at the Brick House pipe shelving at the Brick House

inspired the transformation of this space…

before – boring, useless, a lamp for light open pantry before

now: a functional beautiful open pantry area… DIYShowOff Open Pantry

with new paint, new lighting and DIY industrial pipe shelving. It’s a small space…no room to get a photo straight on of the monstrous pipe shelves but plenty of walking room even with 20 inch deep shelving. I love storing dried goods in glass jars too.

Before from another angle… pantry area before

After…isn’t the industrial pipe shelving unit awesome?! DIYShowOff Industrial Pipe Shelving

It’s super convenient with it’s location right off the kitchen. industrial farmhouse pantry makeover The shelves were designed to fit the wall to ceiling and floor space perfectly and to accommodate our microwave as well as dried goods and baskets. I’m still messing with getting it all organized but I loooove how this once awkward unused space is now functional and pretty! Hurray!industrial cottage pantry

More photos: Notice all of the doorways? DIYShowOff Pantry farmhouse pantry farmhouse pantry decor

Custom design was also handy when working around the heat vent… Kitchen Pantry

Why yes, that’s still a little Christmas hanging around for another week or so. Thanks for noticing! Industrial Pipe Shelving I’ll share more about the lighting challenge soon too. farmhouse industrial pantry lighting

  • Paint – inexpensive way to brighten up a room lacking natural lighting. (accent wall tutorial) Base wall color: Valspar Cool Grey.
  • Lighting – The Allen + Roth fixtures from Lowe’s were super affordable at around $57/ea. but electrical wound up costing more than I anticipated due to labor charges because there was no lighting whatsoever in the space from the get go and an outdated electrical outlet. (We did attempt DIY but it was over our heads and I’m not referring to just literally!) The exterior track/wiring adds to the industrial charm.
  • Pipe shelving – DIY means custom to fit our space and needs. Not a cheap DIY but still more affordable than purchasing two manufactured floor to ceiling shelving units. I’ll share how we did in in a couple of days! Check back!
  • West Elm Fiesta Tile Printed Jute Rug (sold out)
  • Flea Market Distressed Galvanized Metal Clock (DecorSteals – currently unavailable)
  • IKEA Burken jars with lids
  • Large Seagrass Basket (I got a set of three nesting ones on clearance at Wisteria a few years ago.)
  • Petite Cow & Bull Cameo Plaques, set of 2 – Antique Farm House
  • Grocery Sign – I had plans for this to be a DIY sign (mine would have been the same wood stain as the shelving with white lettering, not red) but with so much going on in December and the real life holiday home tour deadline…when I spied it at Hobby Lobby, I couldn’t resist.

Cottage Living Room Before and After

Remember that cottage living room that I designed with Cassity for HGTV Home/Shaw Floors?

Eclectic, beach cottage, living room

how to get this eclectic beach cottage look

That room inspired reader, Wendy, to change previous owner’s hunting cabin style into a lighter lake cottage style. She apologizes for the cell phone quality pictures but like me, I knew you’d be able to see past that to the “wow!”

“Trust me when I say the entire cabin, while in good shape structure-wise, was decorated in a super-kitchsy cabin/lodge/hunting style.  Lots of bear and moose decor.  Not that there is anything wrong with that, but I wanted to steer it in a lighter, lake retreat style.”

before

cottage living room makeover

“Before…every. single. wall.  Hunter green.  Blah.  All this furniture was left by the previous owner, so I used what I could to save money.  The sofa and one of the chairs, which I slip covered.”

after

“I had a fairly small room to work with, a minuscule budget, and a pretty ugly starting point.  Lots of paint, Craigslist finds, DIY and a few new purchases (thanks Pier One and Home Goods).  My only disappointment was not being able to incorporate that red chandelier of your room…the husband said The Ceiling Fan Must Stay!”

I love that our eclectic beach cottage design inspired Wendy’s own beautiful lake cottage version…

She also dressed up builder basic interior doors using a beadboard wallpaper….

Now I may be a little biased but didn’t she do a beautiful job with her version of the room? What do you think?

Family Room Makeover in Progress

I have been working on my family room for years. It keeps getting pushed to the back burner. Ever have one of those rooms?

When we first moved in, we removed carpet. Then lived with plywood subfloors for a few years before finally installing bamboo flooring.

I painted the French doors a beautiful Benjamin Moore Pacific Ocean blue with glazing when I created a door pediment from an old headboard…

And the old hunter green striped LaZBoy sofa was great quality but I was thrilled when it got slipcovered…

And then I saved my money to order the Waverly Santa Maria Desert Flower fabric I had to have to make curtains. That fabric sat untouched for a year. I finally got the curtains sewn but not hemmed although you couldn’t tell in photos.

It’s a room that I tend to decorate here and there, one we rarely use so it gets cluttered up, but it’s never really been finished.

Until now. With the help of Overstock.com, this room is getting “polished”… i.e. “completed”. I also want it to function more as a studio/work space too since it has great lighting. It’s finally happening!

If you’ve ever shopped at Overstock, you know there’s a great selection of all things home related at great prices. And I love shopping the WorldStock section for beautiful handmade home decor and furniture. 60-70% of the purchase price goes back to the artisan and suppliers!

Here’s a sneak peek at my Overstock order. Definitely eclectic…just the way I like it! Some things will have a bit of a DIY spin.

Summer Home Tour

Welcome to the Summer Tour of Homes Day 2! If you’re following along and just popped over from visiting Emily’s gorgeous home at Decor Chick, welcome guests!

Summer Tour of Homes

I’m so excited to participate in Day 2 of the Summer Tour of Homes hosted by Gina at the Shabby Creek CottageIt’s my favorite time of year! Longer days for productivity and lots of DIY.

DIYShowOff Summer Home Tour

Are you ready for LOTS of pictures? I hope so! summer chalkboard

Most of our summer is spent outdoors. We do a lot of summer entertaining, hosting BBQs and family cook-outs. So making our outdoor areas pretty is where our tour begins…

barn patio

We have a bank barn which we use for storage (much like a huge garage), but the bottom part opens up into our BIG party gathering space in the summer where we can set up volley ball in the yard and sit around a bon fire.

teeny tiny scary before picture…

The barn patio area provides a covered space for setting up a picnic buffet for entertaining or a quiet place for relaxing. Improvements are still on the DIY ‘to-do’ list but you can see it’s a big improvement already. This area has been a great location for grad parties, a co-ed baby shower BBQ, a fashion photo shoot, family reunions, picnics and cook outs.

The patio off the back of our home also got a mini-makeover last month with some cleaning, refreshening accents with some spray paint, some re-arranging, flowers and a few new decorative touches…

One of the things I loved about the property when we purchased our home was the mature huge grape arbor. It was very rickety but the grapes were plentiful…

We rebuilt the framing and added a gazebo to the center…

This year we’re recycling a pile of old bricks for a paved walkway and seating area underneath the gazebo (more on that coming up this summer). Again, a work currently in progress, but check out those vines! LOVE!

It’s been a while since I’ve done a home tour. Things are mostly the same with some rearranging but here are some most recent pictures. Our house before was down right disgusting and scary but we saw past that to the potential…location, charm, character, size. But definitely a true fixer upper.

And the family room is still a work in progress so these are a bit of a reveal since I haven’t shared little things in this room before, but fun DIY art and lots of color adds a touch of summer…

Living Room Before and After

Liz from Darling Dwellings recently submitted her living room before and after and I knew you’d want to see it too. When something dungeon-like is transformed into bright, fresh and colorful, I’m motivated to paint a room, move things around, shop and dig into DIY. It’s so fun when others see potential when it comes to turning a place into our home.

Her living room before was dark, but look at that gorgeous ceiling and there’s hardwood under that purple carpet!

After some DIY attention, she now has a bright funky space that fits their modern style.

Boy’s Bedroom Makeover by Nellie Bellie

Hello DIY Showoff readers!! It’s so great to be hear on Roeshel’s blog. That girl is the real deal; she makes my heart happy!! So, it’s a thrill to be able to hang out with her!

My name is Janel…

I blog at NellieBellie…

I am hear today to brag a bit. They say you shouldn’t brag. But, sometimes…you have to!! Otherwise you might just burst!! Although I am bragging, I also do so in the hopes that you get a bit of encouragement on your ability to create something awesome from next to nothing. I see a budget as a challenge, not a hindrance. It’s a chance to add creative and personal touches to a space.

So, what am I bragging about today? What was my “challenge”?

My 10 year old son’s room.

He had been wanting his room to “grow up” for several years. The “baby” room was embarrassing him and he desperately wanted me to fix it. I procrastinated and procrastinated. For a few reasons…

1. A giant bunkbed. It was one of those bunk beds with the full size on the bottom and the twin size on top. I am the oldest of 10; our home is often full of overnight guests. His bed was handy for putting an extra person in. But, it was liking have an Airbus in a porta-potty. It just took up too much space. Who wants to help mom take apart a giant bunkbed?? I looked around and there are no takers. Yep, procrastination. Finally, he talked his dad into helping him and I knew it was time to start.
2. A $120 dollar budget. $120 doesn’t go very far. At all. But, that’s all I had in my budget. And, I couldn’t figure out how to get him a bed and ALSO get the needed paint and supplies for the change.
3. Style compromising. He was fairly specific in what he wanted and didn’t want. But, I wasn’t keen on Characters or Neon colors. I wanted it to grow with him and not require repainting and new bedding very soon. I needed to figure out a compromise to make us both happy.

Both he and I are so pleased with how we conquered these “problems”. They weren’t really problems, more like challenges. They made my brain work harder. A hard working brain is always a good thing, isn’t it?

levis bedroom 13

There it is, his new bedroom. Can you see the ways I saved money and got creative?

1. The bed. He wanted a pallet bed. As in, he really wanted it! Well, okay? That costs me all of $8.00. Problem solved!
2. The wood slats on the wall are from the old bunk bed. Doesn’t that make the best focal wall??
3. The main cost of the budget was the paint. Although I paid big bucks for good paint, I only had to do 2 coats. Saves time and gallons of paint! The stencil paint was oops paint. Budget saver!
4. The curtains are “custom-made” fabric. I gave my son a cloth dropcloth and some Sharpies and asked him to doodle. That dropcloth was cut in half and hung on a rod. The coolest curtains!!
5. Lighting was made from shop lights and antique spools.

levis bedroom8

6. I salvaged everything I could from his room and “remade” it to be fresh and new. The bunk bed ladder was painted and put on the wall for shelving. Even his dresser has a new paint job.

levi's room 9

His favorite part of the whole room??

Levi's bedroom 11

His new reading nook.

I took a little closet and turned it into a great place for a little boy to chill. Budget savers were the duct tape paint stripes, diy funnel light, and dog bed instead of a cushion (seriously…so much cheaper!).

This room redo came in under budget and way past expectations!! Stop by and see the before, as well as more details from this room; including the how-to’s on those “custom” curtains, DIY lighting, and more!

Apartment Kitchen DIY – 1 before and 1 after

Hellooooo, DIY friends! So it’s almost midnight here and even up until about a half hour ago, I had high hopes of editing photos and writing up a painting kitchen cabinets tutorial and Rusteoleum Cabinet Transformations review but my long work days have caught up with me and I can barely keep my eyes open so um, yea…not happening. I sometimes tend to get a little ambitious with trying to squeeze so much into one day. When I say DIY is my passion, I’m not joking. And I love blogging but I discovered some times there isn’t enough time for both. You’ve noticed that too, right? This past week and the next few days will reflect all work, no play, no blogging, no socializing but lots of rewards!

I plan to be up at the crack of dawn (or maybe a few minutes after that) to head back to the rental to work on some more DIY. You all know I love me some DIY projects and it’s a three day DIY weekend, friends! At least in this household it’ll be 3 fun days of DIY (although we may be persuaded to spend an afternoon with family, food and swimming one day because that does sound like a lot more fun than our summer: DIY apartment part 452, doesn’t it?).

So anyway, as I head off to bed for a few hours of sleep before heading back to DIY, DIY and more DIY, in place of sharing a full tutorial and review today, I leave you with this…

This is one area of the apartment that we started with…

apartment kitchen before

{and that’s the cleaned up version…see the scary before here}

and this is what it looks like now (still some more to reveal yet/coming soon to a DIY blog near you. There will be much more to this kitchen than this current state!)

DIY apartment kitchen after

{Rustoleum Countertop Transformations review & tutorial}

Well, that is what it looks like now minus the clutter of additional tools and materials and MINUS that smooth ceiling to the left because there was a leak in the bathroom upstairs (uh oh!) and after a major freak out minor breakdown where I had to walk away to cry before gathering my strength, wiping my nose and wishing desperately that I could just run away to somewhere tropical and never DIY ever again –  to return to clean up wet crumbling drywall and water. I may have ran out the door an wailed. Ask the neighbors. It wasn’t pretty. ::sigh:: The joys of DIY. Not always smooth sailing and according to plan. But, nothing to do but persevere and just clean it up and mentally make up a drywall patch check list because it won’t fix itself and a huge 5 x 2 foot hole in the ceiling to expose floor joints and the wood floor above isn’t going to make for a pretty reveal.

Sooooo…if you don’t see me around for a few days, I will be working on this list:

  • painting faux tileboard, ceiling, trim
  • grouting a bathroom floor
  • patching a ceiling
  • installing baseboards
  • fixing a painted accent wall
  • working on a few other *fun* DIY projects (YAY! Finally!)
  • installing a bathroom vanity, sink and faucets
  • installing a bathroom light
  • installing a toilet
  • staining/poly’ing hardwood floors

Again, with the ambition! I’m optimistic. I’ll be working my butt off to get as much done as I can. I’m not kidding myself. I know I’m not going to make my deadline of it being ALL done this weekend but we’re getting closer! What are YOU doing THIS weekend? If you’re enjoying one of those Pinterest inspired recipes…I’m so envious! Anyone else notice that busy DIY days = unhealthy eating?

Decorating Ideas Made Easy ~ Beautiful Master Bedroom Makeover

Hi DIY friends! I’d like to introduce you to Jennifer from

Decorating Ideas Made Easy

Jennifer’s website is all about teaching others about interior decorating on a budget and she also runs a blog where she highlights different projects. It’s so fun ‘e-meeting’ others who share our love of decorating. Jennifer is also an interior decorator, and runs her own business. I’ve enjoyed browsing the links on her side bar.

decorating ideas made easy

Today she is sharing her beautiful master bedroom makeover which started with beige walls and two pieces of faux finished furniture. Jennifer was ready for some soft color and a calm relaxing retreat. She started with choosing a “Gray Shell” by Porter Paints for the walls because of it’s blue undertone.

rustic beach bedroom

{the headboard is an old door!}

Then she painted her furniture white to create a clean and fresh look and purchased bamboo blinds and sheer curtains to soften the room.

Her search for quality and affordable bedding resulted in finding pretty blue damask pattern set at 65% off. Lucky girl! It’s so pretty!

Accessorizing the room with a ruffled pillow, bench and lamps were layered into the room. I love her choice of decorative accents.

As her budget began to run low, her DIY creativity kicked in and she created a beautiful unique piece for $7 for above the bed. So sweet!

Didn’t she do an amazing job on a tight budget? I think it’s so peaceful and relaxing. I want to snuggle up in that bed after a long week! I’d have a hard time leaving!  See more details on this master bedroom makeover at Decorating Ideas Made Easy.

Apartment Progress ~ floors are sanded!

It’s been a mega DIY couple of weeks here folks! Where I challenge myself to see just how much DIY I can squeeze into a tight deadline (6 wks.) in the apartment renovation. Sounds like work to most people I know but for me, I say “let the fun begin!”. This rental is my life sized mini-doll house! Here’s an update:

how-to-sand-hardwood-floors

{graphic courtesy of Fox Hollow Cottage}

Apartment Progress!

I rented an orbital sander and I enlisted the help from my 19 year old nephew, Kaleb. {muscles, people – I don’t have them!}

orbital sander

HOW TO SAND HARDWOOD FLOORS

{How we did it.}

  1. Floors were cleaned.
  2. Floors were sanded (24 grit) with the orbital sander. Thank goodness my nephew helped because I seriously doubt I could have carried that thing up the stairs and from the looks of it, once the power was turned on, that thing had a mind of it’s own and took off! I know my limitations. And orbital sander wrangling ain’t one of them. Paying a nephew was a wise choice. Much better for Kaleb to restrain the monster sander than me being spun around in circles and crashing through walls, gouging the floor as I go. (It really wasn’t that bad…I’m just little and wimpy but most people would control the orbital sander without difficulty.)
  3. I swept up the dust.
  4. Then he sanded again (60 grit).
  5. Then swept.
  6. Then sanded again (120 grit).
  7. Then swept again!
  8. I used my Dremel Multi-Max and a palm sander where needed in corners, under radiators and around the edges where floor met baseboards. My little muscles could handle those guys. I did the edging with the 3 levels of sandpaper.

{Please don’t mistake these legs for mine…they’re Kaleb’s!}

how to sand hardwood floors

I really don’t know anything about the previous renter/owner. Perhaps their situation wasn’t so easy, but they definitely were not clean and did some damage.

hardwood floors before

So, floors are now sanded!

sanding hardwood floor

There’s a method to my out-of-order renovating madness. I sanded the floors first before painting the walls because I didn’t want to have to scrub the walls twice (1 – the grime before and 2 – after sanding due to the fine layer of saw dust after sanding floors). Next up is covering the floors and painting the ceiling, walls then trim because I don’t want to lose the weekend waiting for the floor stain to dry.

As you’re reading this, I’m probably at the rental DIY’ing! More to come!

Oh! Hoping for better pictures in the near future. I always have trouble making what I’ve learned ‘stick’ and resort to shooting in auto but I sat in on the Photography session at the Haven Conference and Josh and Kevin really had a way with making it more interesting.  I’m all signed up for Photography 101 to learn how to use my DSLR and to finally learn the skills to take better pictures…
