DIY Floral Arranging

The Michaels’ Makers’ April Challenge: Attend a class at Michaels craft store. Take a little time to indulge yourself with some “you” time, learn new skills, get some tips, spoil yourself with something handmade with love or whip up a handmade gift. Gather your friends and make it a girls’ night out.

Were you aware that Michaels offers craft-themed classes?! There are so many to choose from – from painting to knitting or crocheting to paper crafting to jewelry making, kids’ crafts, floral arranging and more. I found most classes were free, only the cost of supplies. A great way to try a new skill or craft, a fun way to set aside time for yourself or to get together with friends. Productive too – you walk home with something you create!

I simply enrolled online (I chose the project DIY floral arranging) then showed up at the scheduled date and time with my friend, Dana.

How fun! free craft classes at Michaels #michaelsmakers (DIY floral arranging tips)

We started with shopping to purchase the materials needed for DIY floral arranging from a printable supply list. The twist: choosing flowers and a container with our own preferences for a custom DIY floral arrangement. Our instructor, Brittney, was close by to answer questions and make suggestions.

The printable class description and supply list when I signed up online for the class provided me with a coupon too – 10% off our entire purchase. Score!

How fun! free craft classes at Michaels #michaelsmakers (DIY floral arranging) How fun! free craft classes at Michaels #michaelsmakers (DIY floral arranging)

Our class size was 6! So fun and what a joy to see the creations! Because of the shopping, we sort of worked in two groups of three, our group getting an early start so I did miss out on seeing the other groups’ finished projects but from what I could tell, they choose some pretty unique supplies too (a tall glass cylinder with burlap and neutrals, a birdcage with ivy and a glass lantern with sea shells)…so fun that you have the option to choose what appeals to you personally. I was there at 6 p.m. and home by 8 p.m., a small time frame and a little indulgence…me time!

When I’ve done floral arrangements in the past, my techniques have varied: 1) buy a pretty bundle of silk florals/bouquet, place it in a vase and call it a day to 2) snip the stems with wire cutters and haphazardly, errr..’artfully’ arrange them in a container. The “handpicked bouquet” technique (haha), kind of like this one last spring:

decoupage vase @diyshowoff #SpringTimeinParis #michaelsmakers

So, getting some ‘professional’ tips was a welcome help!

DIY floral arranging tips I picked up at the class:

  • Secure floral foam to the bottom of a vase/basket/container using hot glue/glue gun to keep the arrangement secure.  How fun! free craft classes at Michaels #michaelsmakers (DIY floral arranging tips)
  • Separate stems using wire cutters to desired height.
  • Michaels’ has a “pick machine” which gives floppy wireless stems a pointy edge to place in foam. So cool!  How fun! free craft classes at Michaels #michaelsmakers (DIY floral arranging tips)
  • Starting with the center, poke a stem into the floral foam then work in “triangle” placements (threes) around each stem.  How fun! free craft classes at Michaels #michaelsmakers (DIY floral arranging tips)
  • Slightly bend wire stems to give flowers a more life-like look. Real blooms are heavy and droop, faux florals have strong wire stems. Give it some “life” by ‘curving’ the wire stem.
  • Camouflage foam with moss or stones. Use picks to secure moss.  How fun! free craft classes at Michaels #michaelsmakers (DIY floral arranging tips)

I really enjoyed the friendly atmosphere, making acquaintances with new people too. And I now I’m excited to display a pretty centerpiece perfect for spring.

Have you attended a local class at Michaels? Did you even know about them? What would interest you most? I plan on attending more for sure, opening a whole new world for making local friends who share my passion for DIY and taking a couple of hours on occasion to improve my crafting skills or trying something new.

Here are a few floral arrangements from class. Pretty, right?

DIY Keepsake Mother’s Day Gift

The Michaels’ Makers’ April Challenge is all about Mother’s Day and this project will be for celebrating my daughter who’s now a mom too (Ali, don’t look! lol). I couldn’t resist scooping up this opportunity to get creative and practice a little DIY influence on the littlest one in our family by making up a DIY keepsake Mother’s Day gift.

Awe! A cute DIY keepsake handprint Mother's Day gift (LED 'love' wood plaque) tutorial @diyshowoff #michaelsmakers Awe! A cute DIY keepsake handprint Mother's Day gift (LED 'love' wood plaque) tutorial @diyshowoff #michaelsmakers

Materials we used:

  • MAKE Market LED wood plaque kit – LOVE (Alphabet Soup Collection) available at Michaels’ Craft Store
  • 2 colors of paint and 2 foam brushes (or sponges)
  • painter’s tape

Awe! A cute DIY keepsake handprint Mother's Day gift (LED 'love' wood plaque) tutorial @diyshowoff #michaelsmakers

What we spent: Under $15

Time we invested: Less than an hour (+ paint drying time)

What we did:

1. We protected our work surface and applied a thin coat of paint to his little hand then carefully pressed it to the wood plaque. We washed his hands immediately and let painted handprinted plaque dry.

Awe! A cute DIY keepsake handprint Mother's Day gift (LED 'love' wood plaque) tutorial @diyshowoff #michaelsmakers

2. Using painter’s tape, we secured the stencil to the plank sign, lining up the word “love” so we could see the drilled holes in the empty stencil space.

Awe! A cute DIY keepsake handprint Mother's Day gift (LED 'love' wood plaque) tutorial @diyshowoff #michaelsmakers

3. Next, with a foam brush we applied paint to the stencil (using a sponge technique using a little paint…don’t glop it on or it will seep under the stencil) to paint on the word “love”. We removed the stencil, filled in any spaces and let the paint dry.

4. Last, we pushed the string of LED lights through the drilled holes from the back side and added 2 AA batteries.

5. The kit comes with hanging hardware and foam/felt for protecting the wall. Attach according to packaged instructions.

Very simple. Very cute. And a special keepsake from baby to mom. Display on a shelf or add to a gallery wall. So sweet!

Make up chocolate ‘shot glasses‘ (SO many great ideas for these!) by melting chocolate, adding essential oils and pouring into silicone molds. Fill with chocolate mousse. I’ve tried two versions…a more complex recipe using heavy cream, etc. and an easy pudding/whipped topping recipe. The first was a little too rich (but so good) but I prefer the second ‘light’ version.  spring party inspiration #michaelsmakers #madewithmichaels @diyshowoff @michaelsstores spring party inspiration #michaelsmakers #madewithmichaels @diyshowoff @michaelsstores spring party inspiration #michaelsmakers #madewithmichaels @diyshowoff @michaelsstores spring party-13 spring party inspiration #michaelsmakers #madewithmichaels @diyshowoff @michaelsstores spring party inspiration #michaelsmakers #madewithmichaels @diyshowoff @michaelsstores

Spring Succulents Arrangement

Spring is right around the corner (so they say) and I couldn’t be cheering any louder! BRING IT ON! …with a spring succulents arrangement!

spring refresh challenge #michaelsmakers

Michaels’ Makers’ March Challenge is all about spring floral and decor and you know Michaels’ has everything you need to fill your home touches of succulent spring decor! I wanted to pack up the entire spring floral department to create a flower market. Prettiest peonies that I cannot kill. For.real. And a new line of fab boho decor to boot! Go! Arm yourself with coupons!

This trip I simply settled for succulents and a few spring accents but I see another shopping trip in my near future. After the gloom of winter, I’m ready for happy spring buds and bouquets and freshening up each room with some happiness and color. How about you?

Okay, on to the spring succulents arrangement tutorial and pretty decorative accents, eh?

Freshen up your home with spring decor! DIY tutorial for spring succulents arrangement! #michaelsmaker

spring succulents arrangement

(or succulent robin’s eggs and no, that’s not a recipe for breakfast)

Freshen up your home with spring decor! DIY tutorial for spring succulents arrangement! #michaelsmaker

What I used:

  • paper mache´eggs
  • acrylic craft paint (robin’s egg blue and something dark like espresso brown)
  • paint brushes (one with short bristles)
  • X-acto knife/utility knife
  • faux mini-succulents
  • optional: hot glue
  • decorative accessories: ceramic egg crate, pitcher/vase, your choice of gorgeous blooms from the floral dept.

What I did:

I ‘cracked’ my paper mache´ eggs using an X-acto knife, cutting them in half with a zigzag pattern.

Freshen up your home with spring decor! DIY tutorial for spring succulents arrangement! #michaelsmaker

I pulled them apart. If the paper pulls away, great! If it stays attached, great! Go with the flow. Mine pulled off. I used the plastic layer instead.

Color the outside of the eggshells with paint and let dry.

Freshen up your home with spring decor! DIY tutorial for spring succulents arrangement! #michaelsmaker

This next step is messy. Apply dark paint to a short bristled paint brush. Using your finger to fan the bristles, splatter dark paint onto the outside of the eggshells. My brush had longer bristles, so I got more of a 1980’s splattered paint look but it’s okay! And again, you’ll make a mess. Brown paint isn’t pretty under your fingernails either. But it does wash off. Let paint speckles/splatters dry.

Freshen up your home with spring decor! DIY tutorial for spring succulents arrangement! #michaelsmaker

Then fill eggshells with succulents. Hot glue if desired. Place into the pretty ceramic egg crate or a nest. Tuck them in floral arrangements. Decorate for spring! So cute!

Awe, look…newly hatched spring succulents! So proud!

Personalized Magnetic Artwork Display

The Michaels’ Makers’ February challenge has an “express yourself” theme with a campaign called Made by Me, A to Z and it’s all about personalization, showcasing projects that take raw materials and transform them into something that’s completely personalized. The new Make Market line includes materials  from galvanized metal to distressed wood, acrylic, fabric and chalkboard! Something for everyone … or even everything for someone. There’s so crafting goodness to choose from, it’s hard to decide!

I treasure little one’s creations, artwork and photos so I decided to personalize a space in the nursery for displaying his art work and photos.

Here’s what I snagged from the Alphabet Soup collection in the Make Market aisle at Michaels:

I personalized a galvanized magnetic memo board with vibrant paint colors to match the nursery decor…

the magnets are so cute!

And added magnets to the back of F-U-N chalkboard letters for displaying on galvanized chargers/plates. These will work for magnetic play time in the future too.

Organizing a Craft Closet

Happy New Year, DIY Friends! Kicking off 2016 with a DIY organization challenge! #michaelsmakers diy organization challenge

Every January, I find myself wanting to declutter and get organized around the house. I do have a craft room upstairs that acts more as a storage room because I find that I prefer crafting on the dining room table. I’m more productive when I’m working where things are going on which inspired creating a craft closet in the guest room right off the dining room.

closet before… DIY craft organization challenge craft closet #michaelsmakers @diyshowoff

I emptied the closet full of forgotten and unworn coats and added some shelves. DIY craft organization challenge craft closet #michaelsmakers @diyshowoff

I still want to paint but my favorite part was shopping Michaels newly launched line of storage and organization products called Cre8ted Spaces available in stores now. Tons of different colors, bins and office supplies – with more than 300 new items in 4 coordinating colors. You have to check it out!

As a part of the Michaels’ Makers January DIY Organizational Challenge, an unused closet makes crafting on our main floor in the dining room with my most used craft supplies for essential oil business and gifts so much easier, making working more enjoyable!

I LOVE the gorgeous color and that there are so many fun different boxes, drawers, baskets and pencil cups to hold and organize my supplies.

3 Ways to Wrap Odd Shaped Objects – Holiday Hack Challenge

Michaels' Makers Holiday Hacks @diyshowoff

The Michaels’ Makers December Challenge is “Holiday Hacks”, how to creatively tackle everything the holidays might throw at you! Some helpful ideas for making holiday prep go smoothly. And I’m sharing 3 ways to wrap odd shaped objects. For example: a toy that’s got part of a box package, jewelry and a stuffed animal/ball.

these odd shapes…

now look irresistible…

Challenge: How to Wrap Difficult Objects

1. Gift wrap idea with a little handmade DIY touch: create a gift using a gift. Add jewelry or small gifts to a fillable ornament (this one comes in two pieces that snap together) with some filler (crinkled shredded paper or pine & berries). Embellish with a hook and bow. Almost too cute to open, isn’t it?

2. DIY! Create your own custom gift bag using your supply of wrapping paper for difficult shaped objects.

Michaels' Makers Holiday Hacks @diyshowoff gift wrapping odd shaped objects

Instructions:

  1. Gather supplies: wrapping paper, scissors, tape and gift.
  2. Cut a piece of wrapping paper that fits around the gift.
  3. Fold paper so seams meet in the center.
  4. Tape seam.
  5. Fold bottom up, making sure that the folded area fits the depth/width of the gift.
  6. Open folded area and shape paper to create a diamond.
  7. Press seams with your fingers to create diamond shape.
  8. Fold down top and bottom of diamond to meet in the center, overlapping a bit.
  9. Tape seams. This creates the bottom of the gift bag. Tape well!
  10. Open gift bag.
  11. Place gift into the bag.
  12. Fold top down.
  13. Tape the package closed.
  14. Embellish with ribbon, bow, tag.

All set for giving!

3. And the obvious: A gift sack! Not just any ordinary gift bag, this adorable gift sack (available at Michaels) is a cuter option than the traditional gift bag AND something that will get use year after year. A re-usable gift! Love it! Perfect for oddly shaped gifts OR toting your stash of gifts on the go.

Framed 3 Dimensional DIY Pumpkin Wall Art

Helloooo, DIY lovers! I’m still hanging on to summer but there’s no mistaking that fall is in the air! My first official challenge for Michaels’ Makers is a DIY Pumpkin Challenge. Fun!

DIY craft pumpkin challenge @diyshowoff #michaelsmakers

It’s nearly that time of year! Shorter days, chilly evenings. I love faux pumpkins or ‘funkins’ for fall DIY crafts and decor! This year Michaels has “half craft pumpkins”! The tutorial tag I saw in the store showed 3 vertically on ribbon with the letters “B – O – O”. How cute is that? But I decided some framed 3D wall art was in order! I always think floral arrangements in pumpkins are so pretty…works of art. So why not add a frame and make it 3D wall art?

3D framed DIY pumpkin wall art tutorial @diyshowoff #michaelsmakers

Materials I used: (some affiliate links included)

3D framed DIY pumpkin wall art tutorial @diyshowoff #michaelsmakers

Tools: wire cutters, hot glue gun, knife or box cutter

Project Time: Less than 1 hour.

What I did:

1. With the box cutter, I cut the top off of my half craft pumpkin similar to the way I would cut the top of a whole pumpkin.

3D framed DIY pumpkin wall art tutorial @diyshowoff #michaelsmakers

2. Cut down the foam brick to fit inside of the craft pumpkin and secure with hot glue . This step may not be necessary but I think it makes the flower arranging easier and keeps the arrangement in place. Flowers can be swapped out for a different look.

3. Secure the half craft pumpkin to the the message board, centered inside of the frame with hot glue. I really think it’d work to attach it to a picture frame with backing (with glass or without) using hot glue too! If you give that option a try, let me know. I’d love to see it! Well, if you try this project at all, do share your creativity! I want to see!

4. Using wire cutters, remove stems from floral bunches and arrange flowers inside of the half craft pumpkin, poking stems into the foam brick to secure.

5. Embellish pumpkin if you wish. I just added the push pins that came with my message board. Stuff in some Spanish moss, if you’re inclined to do so. It adds some texture.

6. Hang to display!

Isn’t it pretty?

The other accessories are from Michaels too! I really love the combination of blues, plums, creams and green for a fresh fall vignette but I think traditional colors with touches of metallic gold would be gorgeous too!

Springtime in Paris vignette {Enter to win a trip to Paris!}

#springtimeinparis #michaelsmakers @diyshowoff

I sure wish it was springtime in western PA but until that day arrives (hopefully sometime in the very near future), I’m enjoying the Michael’s Makers March challenge: “Springtime in Paris”. I paired pretty French script pillows with a pretty DIY springtime arrangement in a decoupaged French script vase with matching frame to bring a little “Springtime in Paris” to our home.

How to:

Working in sections. Brush on a coat of decoupage.

decoupage vase @diyshowoff #SpringTimeinParis #michaelsmakers

Due to the shape of my tin vase, I applied strips of tissue paper in layers.

decoupage vase @diyshowoff #SpringTimeinParis #michaelsmakers

Apply one strip to the wet decoupage, smoothing out the wrinkles (carefully to avoid tearing the tissue paper) then move on to the next section and repeat.   decoupage vase @diyshowoff #SpringTimeinParis #michaelsmakers decoupage vase @diyshowoff #SpringTimeinParis #michaelsmakers

Once the entire vase is covered, brush on another coat of decoupage. You can repeat and add more decoupage layers if you want. The more layers, the better protection.

Let dry. The metallic sheen shines through. Love that happy surprise!

Now arrange your favorite spring time florals. I love this collection of faux teals, oranges and purples with greenery.

Gorgeous! Spring is right around the corner!

I added a bit of tissue paper and French language flash card to a frame {le jardin = garden}, some things from around the house and pillows (also available at Michael’s) to complete my Springtime in Paris vignette.

Felted Soap Tutorial

It’s time for the monthly Michael’s Makers challenge! I’ve been wanting to/meaning to make felted soap for years and I can finally check it off my craft bucket list. But first, January is a great time of year for getting organized. I love these Recollections Memory Boxes with chalkboard labels for keeping crafting supplies organized in my craft room…

organized craft room @diyshowoff

My craft project this month is felted soap. It’s something I usually purchase, handmade from boutiques…always for gifts but never for myself. I’ve always wanted to attempt to make my own but just never made the time to give it a try. Just one of those crafts that seemed time consuming or difficult. Boy, was I ever wrong! It’s so easy! No craft-talent required, although I bet it’s something we can acquire a skill at doing, to create some beautiful works of art maybe even too pretty to use. A fun craft to do with the kids as well.

DIY felted soap tutorial @diyshowoff #michaelsmakers

What is felted soap? It’s like having your bar of soap wrapped in a felt washcloth. It lengthens the number of uses of a bar of soap and there’s lots of lather! It’s also pretty…you decide on colors or designs to coordinate with your bathroom decor, seasons or holidays, etc. You choose the soap brand or scent or even make your own.

Materials I used: Shop Michaels Online

  • bar of soap (I made 3 this time around: lavender, peppermint and even an activated charcoal soap.)
  • wool roving
  • nylon stocking (cut to fit over soap with room to tie opening)
  • water, paper towels, drying rack
  • optional: felt appliqué and felting needle tool

Do a search for felted soap tutorials. There are a lot of different ways to go about this. This is what I did:

1. I wrapped the bar of soap with a piece of wool roving in the long direction around a bar of soap, as tight as I could get it to stay. I left a little overlap on the edges/corners. I used a thin sheet of roving and kept the overlapping the pieces on the back to a minimum.

DIY felted soap tutorial @diyshowoff #michaelsmakers

2. I then wrapped wool roving the other direction. I tucked in the overlap on the corners from the first piece of wool roving placed.

DIY felted soap tutorial @diyshowoff #michaelsmakers

3. Optional: add thin strands of different colors. Add an appliqué using a felting needle tool. Just place and punch. I didn’t really notice that it ‘stuck’ well (I could easily pull it back off) but it did seem to grab a few fibers and that seemed to be all that was needed to keep it sort of secure and in place. Maybe I did it wrong, I’m not a felting expert. lol!

DIY felted soap tutorial @diyshowoff #michaelsmakers

4. I carefully placed the wrapped bar of soap into a piece of nylon stocking. If it was the toe piece, I tied a knot in one end. When I ran out of toe/foot stocking pieces, I used the leg parts of stocking and tied both ends. This just holds everything all together and in place.

DIY felted soap tutorial @diyshowoff #michaelsmakers

5. In the kitchen sink, I prepared a bowl of hot water. I dipped the nylon covered soap into the hot water and started “washing my hands” with the soap. Rubbing each side of the soap, lathering. Repeating for 15 minutes. Yes, it feels like a long time standing there, but it’s not really a long time for a DIY craft project. It’s worth it. Pull up a stool or chair! Be aware of the appliqué so that it doesn’t slide around or change shape. And don’t forget to give attention to the corners and edges of the bar of soap.

DIY felted soap tutorial @diyshowoff #michaelsmakers

6. Next I did a rinse in cold water, lathered one more time for a minute or so then a cold rinse and squeezed to remove some of the water.

DIY felted soap tutorial @diyshowoff #michaelsmakers

7. I then cut away/removed the nylon stocking and patted with a dry paper towel. If it does look as if the felt is not adhered well, repeat steps 5 and 6…without the nylon.

DIY felted soap tutorial @diyshowoff #michaelsmakers DIY felted soap tutorial @diyshowoff #michaelsmakers

8. Set aside to dry overnight (I put mine on a rack with paper towels underneath).

DIY felted soap tutorial @diyshowoff #michaelsmakers

It’s addicting…

I want to make more, try more detailed designs! Maybe add a few drops of essential oil. Open my own shop! Okay, I wouldn’t go quite that far. But, I even made up a felted soap-on-a-rope by tying on wool yarn before felting (then simply decorated it by adding some wool yarn stripes).

5 Tree Decorating Tips

If you celebrate Christmas, more than likely you decorate an evergreen tree (real or artificial) with ornaments and lights. It’s a Christmas tradition in our home.

When the days are short and evening arrives early, there’s just something happy about twinkly lights on a Christmas tree that lifts my spirits and warms my heart this time of year.

dream tree decorating tips @diyshowoff #michaelsmakers

As a member of the Michaels’ Makers blog team, I recently had an awesome opportunity to participate in a dream tree challenge. Bri and I spent quite a bit of time browsing the aisles at Michaels to come up with creative ideas for the challenge. Finally, a glittery shimmery succulent wreath is what inspired the succulents & spruce theme. We both really love the natural/botanical vibe that succulents and plants add to just about any style of decorating.

Succulents & Spruce Christmas Tree @diyshowoff - #michaelsmaker dream tree challenge

Today I wanted to share a few tips for setting up and decorating an artificial tree, some that help make it look more ‘real’ and full.

Tip #1 Set the Mood

This is completely optional but nothing sets a Christmas tree decorating mood like cranking up the Christmas tunes. Pair that with a cup of hot cocoa and you’re all set! I like to set my boxes of ornaments and decorations in the same room to have everything within easy reach.

dream tree decorating tips @diyshowoff #michaelsmakers #tagatree

Tip #2 Pine Scent

Making the tree not only visually “Christmas” but smelling like pine contributes to the magical feel of the holiday season. In the past I’ve lit pine scented candles. Michaels also sells pine or cinnamon scented ornaments. This year, we’re really loving our essential oils. So we’re diffusing essential oil blends like Christmas Spirit, cinnamon and/or pine, creating a seasonal scent without the harmful chemicals.

Tip #3 Ideas for Under the Tree

dream tree decorating tips @diyshowoff #michaelsmakers #tagatree

Get creative with the area under the tree. For my dream tree challenge, I simply added a burlap table runner for a ‘skirt’ and displayed potted succulents. here are some past ideas we’ve done too:

Tip #4 Lights

Tip #4: Pre-lit is the way to go but in the past I’ve also used a 9 outlet Christmas tree extension cord for adding strings of light. I like that the outlets are spaced along the extension cord. One plug into the wall outlet and an off/on switch for the Christmas lights, the outlets up along the back of the tree for adding strings of lights.

Christmas tree extension cord

I was surprised that not many Facebook fans knew this tip, so I’ll share here too: I add my lights to the tree vertically {up and down} rather than around. I can’t tell the difference and when the tree is in a corner, it’s a lot easier than trying to get around it’s width. Not a fan of pulling it out from the corner, moving a ladder all around while trying to “lasso” the tree with strings of lights and pushing it back into place.

Tip #5 Filling in the tree & decorating

If your artificial tree isn’t as full as you’d like it to be, add faux pine garland or silk flower bunches to fill in the gaps {large faux poinsettias help to fill in space and look pretty too}. Even dollar store green garland pushed near the center of the tree will help hide seeing the “pole” through sparse branches. Try larger ornaments and use wide ribbon or tulle as a garland to help fill the empty spaces.

We chose items that had more of a natural theme rather than specifically traditional. By adding in mixed metallics with a bit of glitter along with natural elements, we were able to create an enchanted evergreen vibe.

Bonus tip: Cat Proofing the Tree. I recommend an artificial tree if you have a cat to prevent possible poisoning from ingesting pine needles or tree water (things to consider with a real tree). You may want to set up the tree but hold off on decorating until cat is a little less curious. Choose a safe location in the event that the tree is knocked over. Use a citrus spray, Bitter Apple spray to help discourage cats or spritz pinecones with citrus/citronella and display near the base. Make sure the tree has a wide/secure/heavy anchor. Tape down electrical wires or wrap exposed wires in foil. Artificial trees also eliminate the temptation to sharpen claws where as your cat may find a real tree trunk irresistible. Thankfully our cat doesn’t climb the tree but I’ve heard that tin foil around the trunk may help to prevent it. Ours will bat at lower ornaments though. Be sure to bend the ornament hanger securely around a branch or display unbreakable ornaments lower on the tree.

Succulents & Spruce Christmas Tree {Dream Tree Challenge}

DIYShowOff: Michaels Dream Tree Challenge Reveal

Why yes, I do realize the calendar has just flipped to November. And in real life, it’s a few weeks too early to be decorating for Christmas however it’s not too early to be collecting holiday ideas and inspiration! I’m excited to be a part of the Michaels’ Makers blog team, the 3rd annual Dream Tree Challenge and the #tagatree campaign, I present my “Succulents & Spruce” themed Christmas tree…

Succulents & Spruce Christmas Tree @diyshowoff - #michaelsmaker dream tree challenge

Michaels provided me with a beautiful pre-lit 7 ft. artificial pine and a gift card for decorating to participate in the dream tree challenge to kick off the decorating season in the DIY Show Off house. After I finished decorating it, I decided I wanted to remove the area rug…but moving the 9×12 monster size out from under a decorated 7 ft. tree is another challenge for another day.

We do decorate a Christmas tree in our living room with a more traditional (red & gold) look. I really enjoyed creating some a little whimsical and fun for the dining room. My steps: Assemble the tree (seriously easy as 1-2-3…it’s labeled). The order I decorate: garland (in a diagonal spiral pattern on the tree). I used three. Next I tuck in floral pic items such as branches, ferns, etc. (decorative items with stems). Then I add succulents and ornaments, placing mossy fairy houses into bare spaces. Tuck in pheasant feathers. Top the tree with more floral pics and grapevine star. I laid out a burlap table runner in a circular pattern under the tree and added some potted succulents, some on birch wood slices to add height. You may acquire a supervisor…

DIY Lightning Bug Dog Costume

DIY Halloween Costume Challenge #michaelsmakers

The Michaels’ Makers October challenge is ‘Halloween costume’. How fun! I received a gift card to create a cute lightning bug costume for my love bug, Rosie, our Italian greyhound.

lightning bug halloween dog costume tutorial at diyshowoff #michaelsmakers

This will only fit small super skinny dogs. Rosie weighs in at 10 lbs. Alter the design to fit your dog’s size – sleeves of an old black t-shirt? Or sewing two stretchy/knit bands that fit your dog snug but comfortably.

Materials I used:

Michaels.com: Your 24-hour Arts & Crafts Store

What I did:

Cut the ends off of each sock.

lightning bug halloween dog costume tutorial at diyshowoff

Fold adhesive felt in half and cut out a set of wings. (I drew out a few shapes to practice/choose a shape that I liked best). Remove backing, place onto black felt and cut around the ‘wings’. This gives the wings a little more sturdiness.

lightning bug halloween dog costume tutorial at diyshowoff

Cover light with black tape.

lightning bug halloween dog costume tutorial at diyshowoff

One of the socks will go around the neck. Poke the end of a pipe cleaner into the sock, fold pipe cleaner in half. Twist the base and curl the ends.

Towards the other end of the length of the sock, cut a small hole using a pair of scissors. That hole will allow a felt patch with velcro to show through for securing the wings.

Attach a piece of velcro to the under side of the wings.

I added a piece of velcro to the back of the light and cut a small hole in one end of the second sock.

Cut rectangles from remaining felt. Attach a 3″ strip of velcro to each square of felt (velcro opposite of that used on the wings and light).

Dress the dog! One sock around her neck (this fits my dog comfortably). The other sock fits around her waist area, below her rib cage.

Once the socks were on my dog, I tucked the felt square into each sock with the velcro side facing the small holes. Attach wings and light, velcro side down to velcro showing through the small hole.

Do you dress your pets for Halloween? Do they tolerate it? Act a bit embarrassed (like Rosie)? Roll around or proudly show off?

*Note: Please take your own dog’s temperament, personality into consideration and make your pet’s safety your priority.

Scenic Pumpkin Jack-o-lantern

Inspired by a picture of a pumpkin diorama from Country Living that I stumbled across on the Michaels’ Halloween Pinterest Board, I couldn’t resist making up a scenic jack-o-lantern of my own. *This post contains affiliate links.

scenic faux pumpkin jackolantern tutorial @diyshowoff #trickyourpumpkin

Materials I used (all purchased at Michaels Craft Stores with the exception of stick trees and rocks):

scenic faux pumpkin jackolantern tutorial @diyshowoff #trickyourpumpkin

  • faux pumpkin
  • carving tools
  • black acrylic craft paint
  • sky blue glitter craft paint
  • 4 small foam paint brushes
  • plastic toy wolf
  • moss
  • styrofoam disk
  • hot glue/gun
  • fall garland
  • tree-like sticks from the yard
  • small rock
  • small wood disk (for full moon)
  • white acrylic craft paint
  • glow in the dark paint
  • tiny faux pumpkin
  • small battery operated light
  • 3M adhesive velcro

What I did:

Using chalk, I drew a circular shape onto the front of my faux pumpkin, then cut out the shape using small carving tools. Then I cleaned the dust and pieces out of the pumpkin.

scenic faux pumpkin jackolantern tutorial @diyshowoff #trickyourpumpkin

Using a foam paint brush, I painted the inside of my pumpkin black. I brushed on the dark glitter coat over top and let paint dry.

scenic faux pumpkin jackolantern tutorial @diyshowoff #trickyourpumpkin

While the paint was drying inside, I attached a decorative fall garland with mini leaves and acorns to the outside using hot glue.

scenic faux pumpkin jackolantern tutorial @diyshowoff #trickyourpumpkin

I painted the wooden disk white, followed by a coat of glow in the dark with a few ‘pounces’ of the dark glitter paint using my foam paint brush (not shown). Let dry.

scenic faux pumpkin jackolantern tutorial @diyshowoff #trickyourpumpkin

I inserted the styrofoam disk into the bottom of the pumpkin. I left the plastic wrap on the styrofoam disk. Optional: I used some mini-pinecones to fill in the gaps along the sides.

scenic faux pumpkin jackolantern tutorial @diyshowoff #trickyourpumpkin

Then I topped it off with moss.

scenic faux pumpkin jackolantern tutorial @diyshowoff #trickyourpumpkin

I carefully poked sticks (I found some in the yard that had sort of a ‘tree’ look) through the moss/styrofoam to create “trees”.

scenic faux pumpkin jackolantern tutorial @diyshowoff #trickyourpumpkin

I then secured full moon to the back using hot glue. You could do this before adding the trees. I waited so I could decide the placement behind the trees.

scenic faux pumpkin jackolantern tutorial @diyshowoff #trickyourpumpkin

I added a piece of adhesive velcro to the back of the small battery operated light (don’t cover the on/off switch). It’s adhered to the “roof” of the pumpkin. The velcro attachment allows me to remove the light to turn if off and on.

scenic faux pumpkin jackolantern tutorial @diyshowoff #trickyourpumpkin

I finished it off by adding rocks and a wolf.

Display! Isn’t it fun? I’m going to raffle this one off at a local event but may just have to make one for myself too…maybe with a different scene: mini hale bales and a scarecrow or a ‘nevermore’ theme with ravens or a graveyard scene with tombstones. What about you?

DIY Book Ends

Back to school time! Time to restock the desk area for homework assignments and school projects. Add cute set of DIY book ends to perk things up.

A to Z book ends tutorial @diyshowoff

As a part of the Michael’s Makers team, I have the opportunity to create a monthly themed project. This month’s challenge is “Back to School”. A bit of a ‘challenge’ when your nest is empty but these will work in grand-baby boy’s nursery too. 😉

What I used:

  • 4  wood blocks
  • wood glue and clamps
  • scrapbook paper and scrapbook cards
  • multi-surface acrylic craft paint and foam brush
  • gloss finish decoupage and foam brush
  • {thin} washi tape
  • letter A
  • letter Z
  • hot glue gun & glue

DIY Show Off back to school book ends tutorial

What I did:

Start with applying a bead of wood glue to each block to create an “L” shape. Clamp, wipe away any excess glue and let dry.

DIY Show Off back to school book ends tutorial #michaelsmakers

Once glue was dry, I removed the clamps and applied a ‘white wash’ look using a foam brush and multi-surface acrylic craft paint. I only applied one coat so that the wood grain still showed through. Let dry.

DIY Show Off back to school book ends tutorial #michaelsmakers

Cut scrapbook paper to size for inside of the “L” shape and the outside of the vertical wood piece. I used scrapbook paper and cute patterned scrapbook cards.

DIY Show Off back to school book ends tutorial #michaelsmakers

Apply a coat of decoupage to one side at a time as a glue. Place scrapbook paper onto decoupaged surface. Smooth out air bubbles. Apply another coat of decoupage over the scrapbook paper, sealing it. I brushed on the decoupage in the same direction as the wood grain. Repeat decoupage + scrapbook paper to all sides. Decoupage will go on with a ‘milky’ look but dry transparent.

DIY Show Off back to school book ends tutorial #michaelsmakers

Add washi tape to sides, smooth out bubbles/make sure it’s adhered. Apply a coat of decoupage to seal. *There’s also the option to apply the decoupage before the washi tape to act as a ‘glue’.

DIY Show Off back to school book ends tutorial #michaelsmakers

Apply a second coat of decoupage to all surfaces. I let mine dry overnight.

Attach wood “A” and “Z” using hot glue gun. Wouldn’t they be cute with succulent planters, plastic animals, vases, figurines instead too?

Once hot glue sets, you’re good to go!

Ready for keeping school books within easy reach and an organized desk top. Useful, functional book ends that coordinate with your home office, library, reading room, craft room, nursery or homework station…love it!

DIY Burlap and Spool Key Keeper Tutorial

Michael's Raw Bar

As a part of the Michael’s Makers team, I have the opportunity to participate in monthly craft challenges. This month’s project is a DIY burlap and spool key keeper tutorial.

DIY Show Off key holder

I don’t know about you but I LOVE craft supplies like cork, burlap, unfinished, twine, jute…all things “natural and earthy”. I feel like I could just start a collection of natural materials with no crafting plans…they’re all just so pretty! But since this isn’t blog isn’t titled  “Hoard Show Off”, let’s get to the ‘how to’!

DIY Burlap and Spool Key (or jewelry) Keeper Tutorial

(Because we all have a habit of misplacing our keys on occasion, right? Some more than others. Ahem, “Mr. DIY”)

DIY key holder supplies at diyshowoff.com

Materials:

  • stretched burlap canvas
  • natural wood cutout (I chose a key but I saw the cutest bird cage cut out at Michael’s too)
  • cork letter
  • wooden spools
  • twine and scissors
  • optional: acrylic craft paint (black) and foam paint brush
  • hot glue and hot glue gun
  • picture hanging hardware or 3M strips

What I did:

1. Paint the accessories and let dry. I painted the wooden key decal and spools black.

DIY key holder tutorial at diyshowoff.com

2. Wind twine around spool. Cut twine and secure with hot glue.

DIY key holder tutorial at diyshowoff.com

3. Attach accessories (wooden key decal, cork monogram and spools) to stretched burlap frame using hot glue.

DIY key holder tutorial at diyshowoff.com

4. Hang and display near door. I nestled mine inside of a regular picture frame.

DIY key holder tutorial at diyshowoff.com

Keep keys within easy reach or hang in a in closet, the bedroom or bathroom for hanging necklaces, beads, bracelets, hair ties, etc.

It doesn’t get much easier than that, does it? Perfect for your own home (and sanity) or a great handmade housewarming gift idea.

On August 8th, you’ll find these and MORE fun accessories at Michael’s new “Raw Bar”. Tons of unfinished, natural craft supplies for your next DIY craft project.

My take on the Upcycled T-Shirt Tote Bag

Materials I used:

  • short sleeved sport gray adult medium t-shirt
  • black parachute cord
  • black distressed iron on letters
  • gray thread

upcycled tshirt tote back supplies

Skill Level: Easy

Project Time: 30-60 minutes

You’ll also need:

  • scissors
  • sewing machine (optional)
  • needle
  • iron

Michael’s Coupons:

What I did:

1. Start with a washed, dried, and ironed t-shirt then flip inside out.

easy tshirt tote bag tutorial at diyshowoff.com

2. Next sew the bottom hem of the shirt closed using a sewing machine (you could also do this by hand).

easy DIY tshirt tote bag tutorial at diyshowoff.com

3. Cut off the sleeves.

easy DIY tshirt tote bag tutorial at diyshowoff.com

4. Cut off the neckline (squared).

easy DIY tshirt tote bag tutorial at diyshowoff.com

5. Flip t-shirt right side out. That easy – it’s a bag!

The following steps are optional. Use your imagine to come up with your own creative take on it!

6. Embellish! I chose to use iron on letters (apply to t-shirt according to package instructions) but you could also decorate with fabric paint and/or stamps as shown in Michael’s instructions.

7. Cut two 12″ pieces of parachute cord and knot each end of each piece.

easy DIY tshirt tote bag tutorial at diyshowoff.com

8. Using a needle and thread or sewing machine, attach the parachute cord for bag ties between each of the handles (at one knotted end).

All done! Place near the door, ready to toss in the car for shopping.

Cute, cute, cute! Love it! Easy to do with so many possibilities…love that kind of DIY, don’t you?
