Lavender Ylang Ylang Sugar Scrub

It’s that time of year…winter takes it’s toll on my skin. But, a few times a week you can find me making up some DIY recipe using my essential oils and I love sharing them here for future reference too. This is a recipe I use for mild exfoliation and skin moisturizing. It’s a sweet gift idea and works great for make & take classes.

DIY skin nourishing lavender & ylang ylang essential oil infused sugar scrub for maintaining healthy skin @diyshowoff

What I use: (some affiliate links)

What I do: I fill the container about 1/2-3/4 full of sugar then top it with the grapeseed oil (carrier oil) until the surface of the sugar is covered. Add 2 drops of lavender essential oil and 2 drops of ylang ylang essential oil and stir. I like to leave room to add more sugar if needed and to stir with each use. It makes just the right amount for a gift/sample. Embellish with decorative tape, label, ribbon and mini-spoon.

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) has a scent that’s a wonderful blend of fresh, floral, clean, and calm. It’s this dynamic aroma that has made the flower a classic for perfumes, soaps, fresheners, and beauty products. Lavender oil is a great beginner oil and a must for every home. It’s also highly versatile. From skin care products to relaxing routines, this oil can infuse many areas of your life.

Ylang Ylang essential oil has a rich, pleasing, and romantic floral scent. Diffuse this calming, relaxing and soothing fragrance or massage into the scalp to increase the appearance of healthy, shiny hair.

Yarn Wrapped Reindeer {Secret Santa Blog Tour}

Yarn Wrapped Paper Maché Reindeer Head Tutorial

Yarn Wrapped Reindeer {Secret Santa Blog Tour}

But first – Hellooo, DIY friends! I have the pleasure of participating in a fun secret Santa blog hop organized by my sweet friend, Dria at DIO Home Improvements. Dria is a hard working, generous and talented blog friend with a big heart.

DIO Home Improvements

I was lucky enough to be Dria’s randomly chosen secret Santa. Here’s the DIY gift I made for her, hand-wrapped with love:

DIY yarn wrapped reindeer head @diyshowoff

A yarn-wrapped paper maché reindeer head. Isn’t he cute? I loved the earthy tones in the super soft acrylic/wool blend yarn. I think he’ll be a great holiday decorative accent in her beautiful home.   DIY secret Santa gift @diyshowoff

Materials: purchased from Michaels Craft Store

  • 1 skein of yarn (the thicker the yarn, the less work)
  • paper maché reindeer head
  • hot glue

DIY yarn wrapped reindeer tutorial @diyshowoff

Tutorial: It’s pretty self-explanatory. I started with wrapping the reindeer face, securing where needed with hot glue. The curved areas are a little tricky!

DIY yarn wrapped reindeer tutorial @diyshowoff

Then moved on to the antlers and ears, wrapping a large vertical portion then coming back and doing smaller areas.

DIY yarn wrapped reindeer tutorial @diyshowoff DIY yarn wrapped reindeer tutorial @diyshowoff

I hot glued any loose ends, adjusting yarn to cover paper maché where needed. And voila!

DIY yarn wrapped reindeer tutorial @diyshowoff

Then I simply added a gift tag, tucked in a few Yankee Candle pine scented ornaments, packed him up and shipped special delivery.

DIY yarn wrapped reindeer tutorial @diyshowoff

Giving is the best part of a secret Santa gift exchange, isn’t it? Getting a gift in return is icing on the cake and boy oh boy does my secret Santa know how to create, if you know what I mean.

Thank You

Along the same reindeer theme, Christy from Our Southern Home whipped up this beautiful chevron reindeer accent pillow. Just for me, you guys! Metallic gold chevron. Reindeer silhouette. I love it!

DIY Essential Oils Sugar Scrub

DIY Essential Oils Sugar Scrub Recipe

I recently held an essential oils holiday open house for my Young Living essential oils team and first time guests. One of the activities involved creating some DIY gifts. I’ll be sharing the recipes here and there in the next coming weeks for holiday gift ideas as well as tips for hosting such a party.

DIY essential oils sugar scrub recipe @diyshowoff

Ingredients:

DIY essential oils sugar scrub recipe @diyshowoff

  • 4 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 3 tablespoons melted coconut oil
  • 2 tablespoons carrier oil (such as grape seed oil, jojoba oil, olive oil, etc.)
  • approx. 8 drops of essential oil of your choice
  • 4 oz. container, label, gift tag, ribbon, etc.

DIY essential oils sugar scrub recipe @diyshowoff

Directions: Add drops of essential oil to sugar in a small bowl. Mix well until combined. Add carrier oil to melted coconut oil (I use a double boiler.). Slowly add the oil mixture to the sugar mixture while stirring constantly. Carefully transfer to a small gift container like a glass jelly jar. (Mixture will harden a little as it sits, melt easily when exposed to warm hands and heat.) Decorate and embellish container. Get creative! I used a round chalkboard label on the canning jar lid and added a small spoon tied with a ribbon.

Makes 1 gift sized amount. Increase ingredients to make a bulk sized batch.

Vinyl Decal Tutorial for Stainless Steel Tumbler {for essential oils}

Once I started experiencing the benefits of using Young Living essential oils, I’ve been adding grapefruit, tangerine and sometimes lemon essential oils to my water. Love it! It’s definitely increased my daily water intake! However, because Young Living citrus essential oils are so potent, using a glass or stainless steel drinking vessel is recommended.

I found this awesome stainless steel tumbler (including lid and straw) on Amazon.

vinyl decal tutorial for stainless steel tumbler (for essential oils) @diyshowoff #happycrafters

It works beautifully – keeps drinks SUPER cold with a double insulated wall. Design wise, it’s a little boring and plain so of course I couldn’t help but create some vinyl decals to dress it up a bit.

Materials:

What I did:

I added my designs (shapes I already had on hand) to the Silhouette Designer Software template, making sure they were at a size that would fit my tumbler. Designs are previous purchases from the online Silhouette store accessible through the software.

I sent the design to cut.

vinyl decal tutorial for stainless steel tumbler (for essential oils) @diyshowoff #happycrafters

I adjusted setting as needed for cutting vinyl (you may want to do a test cut).

vinyl decal tutorial for stainless steel tumbler (for essential oils) @diyshowoff #happycrafters

I loaded my adhesive vinyl glossy color side up into the machine.

vinyl decal tutorial for stainless steel tumbler (for essential oils) @diyshowoff #happycrafters

I clicked “cut” and removed vinyl from machine when cutting was complete.

vinyl decal tutorial for stainless steel tumbler (for essential oils) @diyshowoff #happycrafters

Then, I peeled (weeded away) the vinyl that surrounded the design.

vinyl decal tutorial for stainless steel tumbler (for essential oils) @diyshowoff #happycrafters

Next I added a piece of transfer paper to the decals and rubbed with a credit card to ‘transfer’ the design.

vinyl decal tutorial for stainless steel tumbler (for essential oils) @diyshowoff #happycrafters vinyl decal tutorial for stainless steel tumbler (for essential oils) @diyshowoff #happycrafters

I peeled away the transfer paper, separating it from the wax papered backing (vinyl decal should now be on the sticky side of the transfer paper).

vinyl decal tutorial for stainless steel tumbler (for essential oils) @diyshowoff #happycrafters

I placed the decal sticky side down onto the tumbler’s surface then rubbed a credit card.

vinyl decal tutorial for stainless steel tumbler (for essential oils) @diyshowoff #happycrafters

When I peeled away the transfer paper, the decal transferred to the stainless steel surface. All done!

vinyl decal tutorial for stainless steel tumbler (for essential oils) @diyshowoff #happycrafters

*Now stainless steel tumbler must be hand washed (do not run vinyl through dishwasher).   Young Living essential oils - stainless steel tumbler for citrus oil @diyshowoff

Much cuter! And since my mom, my daughter and I all use these tumblers, now I know which one is mine! It makes a great holiday gift idea for your essential oils team or oily friends and family.

Organizing the desk top / homework station for the back-to-school season? A small storage box keeps school and homework accessories within easy reach but not on display.

What to do:

Tape off a design using your FrogTape. Stripes, checkers, plaid, triangles. So many options!

Using a credit card, gift card or just your own thumbnail, burnish the edges of the tape. Meaning: make sure the edges of FrogTape are good and stuck down with no gaps.

Now the fun part: paint each section. YOU customize colors to coordinate with decor or season.

While paint is still wet, carefully remove FrogTape. Then let the paint dry.

Give it a quick light spray of lacquer and let dry.

*Optional: embellish with washi-tape and decoupage, add a drawer knob, drawer pull or leather handle, adhere something from the junk drawer or little plastic animal using hot glue, add vinyl decals or stickers. DIY Metallic Iron On Decal Tutorial

DIY metallic iron on decal tutorial @diyshowoff

I know, I know. I just shared a t-shirt tutorial a few weeks ago that I created for my sister but making up your own personalized iron on decals is so fun! Recently my blog buddy Julia from Cuckoo 4 Design (love her!) shared on her FB page the coolest t-shirt. It read “#BLOGGER”, however it’s only available in Germany so thinking along the lines of DIY (as usual), I decided to make my own for my August Happy Crafters project. They have a great selection of metallic iron on vinyl that I couldn’t wait to use.

DIY metallic iron on decal tutorial @diyshowoff

Materials:

What I did:

Open up your Silhouette Studio Design Edition software and create the text “#BLOGGER” for the front of the shirt. I also added “@DIYSHOWOFF” for the back of mine. Center on a 12×12 space.

metallic gold #blogger vinyl decal tutorial @diyshowoff #happycrafters

Right click the text box to bring up the edit menu and select “flip horizontally”. You’ll need to mirror the text for cutting.

metallic gold #blogger vinyl decal tutorial @diyshowoff #happycrafters metallic gold #blogger vinyl decal tutorial @diyshowoff #happycrafters

Load the iron on vinyl into the machine gold side down (back side up).

metallic gold #blogger vinyl decal tutorial @diyshowoff #happycrafters

Adjust blade setting for heat transfer and send to cut.

metallic gold #blogger vinyl decal tutorial @diyshowoff #happycrafters

Unload from the machine and weed away excess vinyl. The silver/gold side will peel away from a tacky transparent side (your text will be stuck backwards to the tacky side).

metallic gold #blogger vinyl decal tutorial @diyshowoff #happycrafters

Smooth out the shirt onto an ironing board. Place iron on vinyl decal tacky side down in the spot where you’d like it to show on the front of the shirt.

metallic gold #blogger vinyl decal tutorial @diyshowoff #happycrafters

Cover the decal with a cotton dish towel (or scrap fabric). Iron on high adding pressure according to the instructions provided with the Happy Crafters iron on vinyl.

metallic gold #blogger vinyl decal tutorial @diyshowoff #happycrafters

Slowly peel away the transparency. If you notice that the vinyl hasn’t adhered, replace transparency and iron again applying more pressure.

metallic gold #blogger vinyl decal tutorial @diyshowoff #happycrafters

Once transparency is removed, I replaced my cotton dish towel and ironed the lettering flat.

metallic gold #blogger vinyl decal tutorial @diyshowoff #happycrafters

Repeat the same steps for adhering the iron on vinyl decal to the back you may want to slide a piece of cardboard inside of the shirt first to prevent re-heating the front iron-on decal.

metallic gold #blogger vinyl decal tutorial @diyshowoff #happycrafters

That’s it. I may have ironed mine on too high a temp so I have a sort of distressed look to my decal … which I love! So you may want to do a practice run/test to get it just right if you’re not a fan of the distressed lettering. Good luck!

metallic gold #blogger vinyl decal tutorial @diyshowoff #happycrafters

And…it coordinates with my black and gold polka dotted iPhone case. #stylish haha!

Essential Oils Gift Basket Idea

Looking to share Young Living essential oils in the way of a gift or searching for a fun incentive or prize idea?

Young Living Citrus Essential Oils gift idea @diyshowoff

If you’re making healthier choices such as adding drinking more water to your daily routine like I am, you’re going to love this! Of course incorporating more water into your diet is super healthy but how about kicking that up a notch or two by adding a drop of lemon, lime or grapefruit essential oil?

And since Young Living citrus essential oils are so potent they break down the petrochemicals in plastic water bottles, using glass or stainless steel is a must! I recently put together a gift basket for a friend and it turned out pretty cute so I thought I’d share it here too.

Baby, it’s cold outside in my geographical location in February so how about adding a package of hot cocoa to a dollar store mug, toss in some DIY decorated marshmallow stirs and attaching a cute “You melt my Heart” tag.

DIY Glitter Iron-On Vinyl Tutorial

The Chinese zodiac/new year follows the lunar calendar and begins January 31st. 2014 is the year of the horse. It’s a year for making efforts to improve yourself. Why not wear a reminder to do just that. It’s also the symbol for my word of the year for 2014 but more on that later this week.  iron on vinyl glitter decal tshirt tutorial

Did Santa bring you a Silhouette Cameo? Unpack that baby! There are so many cool things to create just waiting for your imagination! One of the things I love is the ability to create custom vinyl decals easily and that includes not just stencils or signs but dressing up my t-shirts too. Here’s how:

Materials:

  • t-shirt or sweatshirt. Give an old one a little pizzazz! Or purchase new if creating a gift.
  • Iron-on vinyl. I’m using Happy Face Glitter Iron On Vinyl in Pine Bling from Happy Crafters for this project. Big selection of fun printed, solid and glitter iron-on vinyl for DIY projects.

Tutorial:

1. Create a design using the Silhouette Studio. I purchased a horse shape from the Silhouette online store and added text.

2. For iron-on vinyl, you’ll need to “mirror” the design. I just ‘right click’ my design and flip horizontally.

3. Load the vinyl into the machine glossy/sparkly/glitter side down {transparency side down}. Adjust settings. Recommended settings for cutting iron-on vinyl are blade 2, speed 8, thickness 5. Send to cut.

4. My blade is dull from so much use and the glitter iron-on vinyl is thick so before removing from machine, I could tell it wasn’t a good all-the-way-through cut. I had to re-adjust my blade setting to 6 and send to cut again. Tip: Test yours before removing vinyl from the machine so that the not-so-good cut lines will match up with the newer cut lines if needed. You’ll want the vinyl to be cut but not the transparency. When cutting is complete, remove vinyl from the machine. Cut vinyl to a smaller more manageable size from the roll/sheet.  iron on vinyl tutorial

5. Weed away all negative vinyl (vinyl that is not a part of the design) from the adhesive transparency.

6. Position decal onto shirt. Cover with a cotton tea towel, napkin or fabric. Iron on high, pressing down 25-30 seconds on each part of the design (no steam). iron on vinyl tutorial iron on vinyl tutorial

7. Peel away the transparent shiny plastic. If part of the design starts to lift, replace transparent plastic, re-cover and iron again.  iron on vinyl tutorial iron on vinyl tutorial

8. All done! An old t-shirt, a new look and a fun reminder of your ‘word of the year’ to make 2014 awesome!

It’s certainly difficult to photograph the sparkle, not to mention take photos of myself wearing it. But you get the idea, right? It’s super glittery!

Isn’t that green glitter iron-on vinyl pretty? I’ll be using scraps for a glittery shamrock for St. Patrick’s Day too! Here’s another iron-on vinyl tutorial for a monogrammed t-shirt for more direction and inspiration.
