Eclectic Sun Room Makeover

Featured

This little room at the back of our house has gone through several transformations. We mostly call it the mud room but it’s more of a sun room, reading nook, sitting room, overflow from the dining room when entertaining (more seating)… a quite space off the dining room with French doors leading to the back patio.

Boho Sunroom Makeover

Well, the sun room got an unplanned makeover when we used some leftover paint from the man cave paint job. And it gave me a chance to turn Spring cleaning into something so rewarding – a room makeover with a zero budget by shopping the house. But first, let’s take a trip down memory lane for this little room…

When we bought our house, it had a single door and blue indoor/outdoor carpeting. Right away we added French doors, slate tile and a fresh coat of paint.

It’s one of my grown up “doll house” rooms. I’m always changing it up in there by shopping the house for furniture and accessories. The HUGE mirror was frameless and above the fireplace in our living room when we bought our house. We moved it to this room to give the illusion of more space and light, added a frame and a vinyl monogram.

Do you move furniture and decorative accessories around from room to room to freshen things up or do you call it permanently perfect and enjoy things as is for years?

There was even a brief stint as a breakfast nook.

I love an eclectic vibe of the collected decor…can you tell?

This DIY half globe light fixture cover is one of my favorite projects:

And these DIY no-sew script curtains. They didn’t go back up this time but I’ll be finding somewhere else in our home to use them. Do you have decorative accessories that you hang onto because you’re just so in love?

Remember when I had these vintage teacher desks in the kitchen too? Again, always rearranging. It’s just such a joy! Motivation to clean, something new without spending. I’m addicted.

Holiday decorating too!

Let’s see the latest look, shall we? Finally, right? I am in love with the happy and bright atmosphere with the dark moody wall color! The collected decor from shopping around the house gives it an eclectic boho feel!

And all that’s new in this room is the wall paint (which was actually leftover, so again, zero dollars spent! Gotta love that!). Wall color: Carbon Copy (Behr)

Chandelier – one of my favorite DIY projects from the past. It does require a lot of TLC for the plants. I also love the idea of solar lights in place of plants.

What are you latest greatest favorite yard sale treasures?

Flower Fountain Planter

Isn’t she a beauty?

What a treasure! Check out this beautiful cast iron flower fountain in all of her chippy glory! @diyshowoff

This flowering fountain is my favorite planter so far and after looking back, I’ve done a lot of planters over the years…and we joke that I have the complete opposite of a green thumb. Pffft. The DIYShowOff vault is filled with proof (below) that I’m not THAT terrible a gardener. Right? Right.

Okay, onto this year’s planter project….she’s so pretty! A mix of something old, living breathing beauty and a new topper.

What a treasure! Check out this beautiful cast iron flower fountain in all of her chippy glory! @diyshowoff

When we bought this old neglected house just about exactly ten years ago, we found pieces of an old fountain in the tall overgrown grass. Or maybe it was weeds or what might have been a garden at one time…but it was like finding buried treasure! And for 10 years, I’ve wanted to do something with ‘her’ but she sort of just sat discarded in that same overgrown area (and that little fenced in mess, well that’s a project for another time) or up against a hidden area of the house as a last priority. Forgotten.

I bet this rusty, chippy fountain was stunning back in her heyday with her beautiful curves. I imagine she had a bubbling personality with lots of feathered friends.

This year, Russ hefted those cast iron pieces out from hiding and cleaned them up and a plan was hatched. He drilled holes into the basin bottoms and sprayed the interior basin areas with a rubber/latex coating.

Then he assembled it, using a cyclone fence pipe to anchor and secure it into place.

We filled the basins with potting soil, plants and flowers.

Looking good, old girl! It’s worn and old and the top wasn’t quite what it used to be (not sure what it looked like back in it’s prime, but I love that we didn’t spray paint it solid.

What a treasure! Check out this beautiful cast iron flower fountain in all of her chippy glory! @diyshowoff

Then I remembered that I had a decorative artichoke-type accent. It’s resin and perhaps a temporary topper but it’s secured with a blog of concrete (still wet in photos but dried to a lighter shade…still, imperfectly perfect although I may give it a little white-washing) and I AM IN LOVE! Isn’t she beautiful? Isn’t she lovely?

What a treasure! Check out this beautiful cast iron flower fountain in all of her chippy glory! @diyshowoff

How old do you think she is? I’d guess at least 50-60. The imperfections of age give this girl some history. Just imagine the stories she could tell of homeowners past.

What a treasure! Check out this beautiful cast iron flower fountain in all of her chippy glory! @diyshowoff

She looks like a beautiful tiered cake with luscious flowering/fruit decorations to me!

Those laugh lines and wrinkles. She’s just as striking today as she once was. At least to a lover of worn and vintage treasures like me. What do you think?
