Thrifty Bathroom Counter Organizer

Thrifty bathroom counter organizer (this would be cute on a desktop in my home office too)… bathroom organizer at diyshowoff.com

Materials:

  • Thrift store scores: mismatched vase, ceramic jar with lid, tiny dish and tile trivet
  • RustOleum FlexiDip (removable rubber coating in gray) or spray paint

DIYShowOff bathroom counter organizer materials

How to: Clean and dry ceramic pieces. Apply 4-6 light even coats allowing 5 minutes dry time between each coat. Let dry overnight. Optional: Glue pieces together with an epoxy glue. Rubber coating is removable (within three months) when adhered to plastic, metal and glass…pretty cool!

DIYShowOff bathroom counter organizer materials

That’s it. I love the matte color, texture, that if I had used something ‘precious’, I’d be able to peel away the rubbing coating, and that it’s waterproof too.

Painted Storage Box Craft

Organizing the desk top / homework station for the back-to-school season? A small storage box keeps school and homework accessories within easy reach but not on display.

Materials:

What to do:

Tape off a design using your FrogTape. Stripes, checkers, plaid, triangles. So many options!

painted box craft idea at diyshowoff.com

Using a credit card, gift card or just your own thumbnail, burnish the edges of the tape. Meaning: make sure the edges of FrogTape are good and stuck down with no gaps.

painted box craft idea at diyshowoff.com

Now the fun part: paint each section. YOU customize colors to coordinate with decor or season.

painted box craft idea at diyshowoff.com

While paint is still wet, carefully remove FrogTape. Then let the paint dry.

painted box craft idea at diyshowoff.com

Give it a quick light spray of lacquer and let dry.

painted box craft idea at diyshowoff.com

*Optional: embellish with washi-tape and decoupage, add a drawer knob, drawer pull or leather handle, adhere something from the junk drawer or little plastic animal using hot glue, add vinyl decals or stickers. Get creative!  painted box craft idea at diyshowoff.com painted box craft idea at diyshowoff.com

Use as a pencil box, for keepsake treasures, to store note or recipe cards, for organizing an essential oils collection, to tuck on a bookcase filled with bookmakers and highlighters, to keep cords handy or for a unique way of wrapping gifts.

It’s perfect for storing 70 15ml Young Living essential oils (more if you’re mixing in 5 ml sizes). Great idea for incentives, prizes or gifts – and YOU customize it to coordinate with your home.

{Hospital} Bedside Table Makeover

One of the Lowe’s Creative Ideas challenges for September is furniture makeover…

Hospital Bedside Table Makeover tutorial

I just happened to score this little thrifty treasure from the thrift store…

hospital bedside table DIY makeover

for the low, low price of $3.99! A cute {hospital} bedside adjustable table in need of some TLC.

I gave it a good cleaning then disassembled the parts.

After taping off the casters, I gave it a few light sprays with a metallic gold spray paint.

hospital bedside table DIY makeover

Once that was dry, I went back and forth on making a decision on the tray part. A shelf board would work. So would a serving tray.

hospital bedside table DIY makeover

I went with the serving tray. I reassembled and used smaller wood screws to attach the tray to the frame.

hospital bedside table DIY makeover

Now it’s a convenient bedside accessory…

Hospital Bedside Table Makeover tutorial Hospital Bedside Table Makeover tutorial

I liked that it has a lip since the tray tilts forward. Great for holding a book or tablet.

Adjust to the table top position for a portable desktop, breakfast in bed or bedside, chair side or couch side table.

Makes for a pretty side table too…

Silhouette Scrap Wood Wall Art

I recently shared the DIY coat rack we’re now utilizing in our sitting room above a vintage trunk used as a bench…

DIY pipe coat hooks @diyshowoff

See who loves to rest here? It’s a tiny little Italian greyhound named Rosie…

DIYShowOff Coat Rack and Sign

One more picture. She’s just so stinkin’ cute!

DIYShowOff Coat Rack and Sign

and I’m loving this scrap wood turned silhouette art placed above it. Rosie approves! DIYShowOff Wood Plank Wall Art

Materials I used:

  • scrap 1 x 6 pine boards
  • RustOleum Ultimate Wood Care (kona)
  • RustOleum Ultimate Polyurethane
  • Gorilla wood glue
  • picture hanging hardware
  • vinyl decal (I used a greyhound shape)
  • white acrylic craft paint

What I did:

I cut my pine boards so that they all measured the same 30 inches long then sanded the edges.

DIY wood plank sign tutorial DIY wood plank sign tutorial

Next I used wood glue and clamps to create a large wood plank canvas. Let dry.

DIY wood plank sign tutorial

I applied my vinyl decal to the center of my wood canvas, burnishing the edges using my thumbnail.

DIY wood plank sign tutorial

Then using a foam brush, I applied the stain in the same direction as the wood grain.

DIY wood plank sign tutorial

After a few minutes, I wiped away the excess stain, again in the direction of the wood grain, with an old rag. Let dry one hour.

DIY wood plank sign tutorial

Then I removed the vinyl decal. I was hoping that there wouldn’t be any seeping but there was. No problem! Change of plans. Sometimes DIY doesn’t always go according to plan.

DIY wood plank sign tutorial

I used a small craft paint brush and white acrylic craft paint to fill in the unfinished portion of the greyhound stencil. Let dry.

I then applied a coat of the polyurethane over the stain, brushing on in the direction of the wood grain. Add picture hanging hardware to the back and hang to display.

DIY Book Ends

Back to school time! Time to restock the desk area for homework assignments and school projects. Add cute set of DIY book ends to perk things up.

A to Z book ends tutorial @diyshowoff

As a part of the Michael’s Makers team, I have the opportunity to create a monthly themed project. This month’s challenge is “Back to School”. A bit of a ‘challenge’ when your nest is empty but these will work in grand-baby boy’s nursery too. ;)

What I used:

  • 4  wood blocks
  • wood glue and clamps
  • scrapbook paper and scrapbook cards
  • multi-surface acrylic craft paint and foam brush
  • gloss finish decoupage and foam brush
  • {thin} washi tape
  • letter A
  • letter Z
  • hot glue gun & glue

DIY Show Off back to school book ends tutorial

What I did:

Start with applying a bead of wood glue to each block to create an “L” shape. Clamp, wipe away any excess glue and let dry.

DIY Show Off back to school book ends tutorial #michaelsmakers

Once glue was dry, I removed the clamps and applied a ‘white wash’ look using a foam brush and multi-surface acrylic craft paint. I only applied one coat so that the wood grain still showed through. Let dry.

DIY Show Off back to school book ends tutorial #michaelsmakers

Cut scrapbook paper to size for inside of the “L” shape and the outside of the vertical wood piece. I used scrapbook paper and cute patterned scrapbook cards.

DIY Show Off back to school book ends tutorial #michaelsmakers

Apply a coat of decoupage to one side at a time as a glue. Place scrapbook paper onto decoupaged surface. Smooth out air bubbles. Apply another coat of decoupage over the scrapbook paper, sealing it. I brushed on the decoupage in the same direction as the wood grain. Repeat decoupage + scrapbook paper to all sides. Decoupage will go on with a ‘milky’ look but dry transparent.

DIY Show Off back to school book ends tutorial #michaelsmakers

Add washi tape to sides, smooth out bubbles/make sure it’s adhered. Apply a coat of decoupage to seal. *There’s also the option to apply the decoupage before the washi tape to act as a ‘glue’.

DIY Show Off back to school book ends tutorial #michaelsmakers

Apply a second coat of decoupage to all surfaces. I let mine dry overnight.

Attach wood “A” and “Z” using hot glue gun. Wouldn’t they be cute with succulent planters, plastic animals, vases, figurines instead too?

DIY Show Off back to school book ends tutorial #michaelsmakers

Once hot glue sets, you’re good to go!

DIY Show Off back to school book ends tutorial #michaelsmakers

Ready for keeping school books within easy reach and an organized desk top. Useful, functional book ends that coordinate with your home office, library, reading room, craft room, nursery or homework station…love it!

Rustic Glam Woodland Centerpiece and a Mint Mocha Smoothie

My favorite time of the year is summer and I love spending my days outdoors when I don’t have to bundle up, the sun shining warm on my face, taking a few moments from the chaos on the patio swing to close my eyes while I ponder the day’s plans.

My woodland centerpiece is inspired by summer, talking walks in the woods. A good hike, re-connecting. Mood boosting!

Materials: moss runner, large wood slice, fresh flowers, feathers, white candles, twine, wooden spoons and gold spray painted toy animals.

a blend of natural elements with a little glam

Create a woodland themed vignette. Nature inspired. Peaceful and serene.

It’s a sweet centerpiece for the bistro table under our grape arbor gazebo, all set for some quiet time, counting blessings, healthy meditation and brainstorming up my next big DIY project. Remember to take a few quiet minutes for the sake of your health, to breathe, to think (or not think) and to just rest before tackling the rest of the day.

A shaded haven for catching up with my daughter. We sat there the other day, sipping mocha mint smoothies, talking and dreaming big.

Do you take the time to sit and soak up the good things? What inspires you to live a healthier lifestyle?

Mocha Mint Smoothie Recipe

Ingredients for 1 large serving or 2 small:

mocha mint smoothie

  • 3 cups of frozen chocolate Greek yogurt
  • 1 cup of Silk Almond Coconut Blend (grab a coupon!)
  • Shaved organic chocolate
  • Fresh mint
  • 1 drop of peppermint essential oil

Check out the Silk products for yourself on the Silk Facebook page. Cool, refreshing and so good! I hope you get a few happy moments away from summer’s crazy schedule today. xo

DIY Pipe Fitting Wooden Coat Rack Tutorial

This little seating area is great for putting on shoes and a quiet pet resting place and I love the vintage mould (I think that’s what the chalkboard is hanging on) but you know what? I was ready for a change. Surprise, surprise! haha!

eclectic-hallway

Time to get creative and since we love pipe and wood projects for a bit of a rustic industrial style (see this), those are the materials I used to create a pipe fitting wooden coat rack.

What I used:

DIY pipe coat hooks

  • Three 3/8 inch galvanized flanges
  • Three 3/8 inch 90 degree elbows
  • Three 3/8 inch black caps
  • Three 3/8 inch x close steel pipe nipples
  • Twelve 3/4 inch sheet metal screws (these fit nicely for securing the flanges to wood)
  • RustOleum Universal Metallic spray paint + primer (oil rubbed bronze)
  • Scrap 1 x 6 pine board
  • RustOleum Ultimate wood stain (Kona)
  • RustOleum Ultimate polyurethane
  • 2 drywall anchors and screws (to secure to wall)

What I did:

1. I connected my pipe fittings in this order: flange, nipple, elbow, nipple, cap.

DIY pipe coat hooks @diyshowoff

2. Then I gave them a few light coats of spray paint and let dry.

DIY pipe coat hooks @diyshowoff

3. I cut my scrap pine board to 30 inches.

DIY pipe coat hooks @diyshowoff

4. Then sanded the edges smooth and wiped clean.

DIY pipe coat hooks @diyshowoff

5. Next using a foam paint brush, I applied the wood stain and let it sit for a couple of minutes. You’ll want to wear gloves!

DIY pipe coat hooks @diyshowoff

6. Then wiped away the stain with an old rag and let it dry.

DIY pipe coat hooks @diyshowoff

7. After about an hour, I brushed on the polyurethane and let it dry according to manufacturer’s instructions.

DIY pipe coat hooks @diyshowoff

8. Once everything was dry, I secured the first pipe hook to the center of my wood plank. Then secured the other two.

9. I attached it to the wall using drywall anchors and screws.

Sauder Experience

With a nursery project in the works, purchasing a dresser is near the top of the furniture list.

As a part of a fun campaign, I recently shopped at Sauder.com to choose a dresser that fit our space and needs. The Expedition Design tool makes choosing a piece that fits your style easy!

I ordered the a dresser from the Shoal Creek Collection (gorgeous jamocha finish) from Sauder that will coordinate beautifully with the crib that Ali has chosen. I love the extra attention to detail.

We loved the rich dark color, beautiful hardware and extra deep drawers for more storage. Even better? I ordered it online and it was delivered to my back door. Much less complicated than hauling it home from the store.

Upon unpacking the box, it was noted that one of the boards had snapped during shipping. But rather than have to pack everything up and return to the store (that box is heavy!), I simply ordered a replacement part at no cost to me … online. It shipped the next day. Super convenient! There’s also a live chat option.

And while the DIY part of building may feel overwhelming, assembly was actually pretty easy with detailed instructions. Every piece is labeled and the drawings of each step are helpful. The only tools required are Phillip’s screwdriver and small hammer. The dresser was assembled in just a little over an hour. An affordable dresser! With slides and drawers…that easy!

It’s currently residing in our guest room, soon to be guest room + nursery space. Perfect for baby’s clothes, blankets and diapers but until those plans are underway, it provides great storage for extra linens, towels and “junk”.

Isn’t it gorgeous? I love the placement at the end of the bed too. How about you?

You’ve seen me use a dresser as a kitchen island, hallway linen storage and dining room buffet. I love non-traditional uses for furniture. And dressers are so versatile for use and function as additional storage for any room. What do you think?

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Sauder. The opinions and text are all mine.

Quick DIY Lamp Makeover

A recent thrift store score inspires a new addition to our family room.

Materials:

It goes without saying but I simply taped off the parts I didn’t want sprayed with paint using FrogTape.

Wall Mounted Lantern Hanger

As a member of the Lowe’s Creative Ideas team, I participate in monthly DIY challenges. The challenge I chose for July is DIY decor with a DIY wall mounted lantern hanger.

DIY wall mounted hanging lantern tutorial at diyshowoff.com

Materials I used:

wall mounted hanging lantern materials

Wall Mounted Lantern Hanger supplies

Here’s what I did:

1. Stain the wood plank by brushing stain on in the direction of the wood grain, let sit a few minutes and wipe away (same direction) with clean rags. Let dry one hour.

DIY wall mounted hanging lantern tutorial at diyshowoff.com

2. Apply a coat or two of polyurethane and let dry. It goes on with a milky look but dries transparent.

DIY wall mounted hanging lantern tutorial at diyshowoff.com

3. Attach hanging hardware to the back. I did two; one on each end.

DIY wall mounted hanging lantern tutorial at diyshowoff.com

4. Flip to the front stained side and attach the curtain rod brackets using 1/4″ screws (the screws that come with the brackets will be too deep). I measured and marked the center bracket first then measured the center from the edge to the center bracket on each side for the other two ‘hooks’.

DIY wall mounted hanging lantern tutorial at diyshowoff.com

5. Adjust the brackets to fit the depth of hanging a lantern on the hook.

6. Hang or secure to the wall.

7. Hang lanterns. Add candles, use as mini display cases to showcase your favorite small decorative items or use lanterns as mini-greenhouses for succulents or small plants.

Beverage Recipe Vinyl Decal

Summer time in our home = lots of entertaining and hauling out the fancy glass beverage server for homemade lemonade is a must. Labeling glass containers lets guests know exactly what they’re consuming.

Beverage Recipe Vinyl Decal Label Tutorial

Materials:

  • Glass beverage server
  • Happy Crafters Glossy Adhesive Vinyl (mint)
  • Transfer paper

Tools Needed:

  • Vinyl cutter (I use a Silhouette Cameo)
  • Scissors

What I did:

Open up Silhouette Studio Designer software. Choosing the font tool, write up a label. Simply the name of the beverage or ice. I included my lemonade recipe too.

Party Favor Jewelry Dish

Looking for an easy DIY party favor idea? These melamine appetizer plates with vinyl decals make a cute little gift!

jewelry junk tray tutorial @diyshowoff.com

What I used:

What I did:

Measure flat center area of plates. Mine allowed for a 3.5 inch square design. Open the Silhouette Studio Design software and create words using font/text in a size that fits. I created six different designs.

Weed away excess vinyl from the design.

vinyl decal tutorial for plates @diyshowoff.com

Apply transfer paper over the vinyl lettering.

Cut into individual designs.

Rub the transfer paper over each piece. I just grabbed a hard plastic name tag with a straight edge. You could also use a credit or gift card.

Peel away wax paper backing, transferring vinyl to the transfer paper.

Simple but so many options. Try different colors, different fonts, personalize with quotes, monograms, shapes or words.

Cute inexpensive gift to include with a card or gift basket or to use as party favors.

Perfect for keeping tabs on jewelry, paperclips on a desk, keys in an entryway, spare change in the laundry room, Q-tips in the bathroom, etc.

Painted Staggered Striped Accent Wall

I’ve shared bits and pieces and sneak peeks of the accent wall in the laundry room and I have to say, photographing that small space is a big challenge but here’s the gist of what we did and how it’s looking. A small wall in a laundry room is a great way to play with a bold design.

The base color on my walls is white. Clean, plain, simple.

But adding black staggered stripes is a fun way to add a punch of wow!

laundry room at diyshowoff.com

Supplies:

  • Paint – I use latex in an eggshell finish. One color as the base, a bolder color for the accent.
  • FrogTape® Delicate Surface (I also used FrogTape® Multi-Surface to start)

What I did:

Planning/measurements: I started by measuring the wall width and height. For me it’s 45.5 inches wide by 107 inches or so tall. My baseboard is 6 inches tall, leaving me with 101 inches of height. I decided on 5 inch high stripes. With a 45.5 inch width, I decided on roughly three 15 inch columns.

I’m going to start with how I did the design since painting the base color is basic…just paint the wall! For the stripes, using a yard stick, I made pencil marks every 5 inches above the baseboard and along the wall.

staggered stripes accent wall @diyshowoff.com staggered stripes accent wall @diyshowoff.com

I then connected the dots using a light pencil line and my level to create evenly spaced horizontal lines up the wall from baseboard to ceiling.

staggered stripes accent wall @diyshowoff.com

Because dividing 45.5 into 3 equal sections gets an odd long number, I made a mark in the center of each horizontal line on the wall (for me that was 27.75). From the center, I made a pencil mark at 7.5 inches left and right. My center column on the wall will measure exactly 15 inches. The left and right columns will be slightly larger than the center 15 inch column (but unnoticeable).

I then used my level to connect the dots to mark my vertical lines and to create three columns on the wall.

Time for FrogTape®! Starting with the center column, I taped off the “outside” of every other rectangle.

Burnish the edges of the FrogTape with a thumbnail.

staggered stripes accent wall @diyshowoff.com

Using a dense foam roller, I painted each rectangle. I did three coats since I painted black on white.

staggered stripes accent wall @diyshowoff.com staggered stripes accent wall @diyshowoff.com staggered stripes accent wall @diyshowoff.com staggered stripes accent wall @diyshowoff.com

While the last coat of paint was still wet, I removed the FrogTape by pulling away from the paint. Let dry 24 hours.

staggered stripes accent wall @diyshowoff.com staggered stripes accent wall @diyshowoff.com staggered stripes accent wall @diyshowoff.com

Time to paint the left and right columns! Using FrogTape Delicate Surface (since the black paint is still fairly fresh), I taped off each rectangle (staggered from the center column).

staggered stripes accent wall @diyshowoff.com

Again, burnish the edges of the FrogTape with a thumbnail then paint. I did three coats throughout the day.

While the last coat of paint is still wet, remove the FrogTape by pulling away from the paint. Let dry 24 hours.

As is the way with DIY, I was not liking my initial design. It was more of a check board/racing flag look. Not what I was going for at all! Yikes! OH NO NO NO!

staggered stripes accent wall @diyshowoff.com

The fix: So, on the right and left columns I applied a strip of FrogTape Delicate to the white rectangle boxes/stripes…one on the top edge, one on the bottom edge.

staggered stripes accent wall @diyshowoff.com

Then painted the white middle section of each rectangle black. Again, 3 coats!

staggered stripes accent wall @diyshowoff.com

While the last coat was still wet, I removed the FrogTape….and the result was MUCH BETTER! It has a sort of 3D look to it. I was going to do that last paint step on the middle column’s black rectangle with white paint in the center but ended up liking it as is.

staggered stripes accent wall @diyshowoff.com

It really pops agains the otherwise neutral white laundry room with silver appliances, black walnut porcelain tile floor, bright green decorative accents and adds some fun dimension.

staggered stripes accent wall @diyshowoff.com

Well worth the math. Well worth the few hours of work a day for a couple of days. Now I get to enjoy the result for years! *I had to lighten the pictures (causing graininess) because there is NO natural light in this room.

It’s the perfect back drop for my ironing board with DIY cover too! Don’t you think?
