Creating a Reading Nook

There’s a section of our living room near the built in shelving that I like to call our reading nook. It’s a place for displaying my DIY, decorating, home improvement book collection. A place where I enjoy curling up and flipping through the pages of the latest issue of my favorite home magazines.

Things to consider when creating a reading nook:

Bookshelves or bookcases are a must-have for display and organization. In our home, I use a section of built-ins in the living room.

Comfortable seating. I chose two Nico Accent Chairs by Sauder. I love the sturdiness, traditional design, durable linen fabric and fun print in neutral colors with nailhead trim for completing the look and function in this space.

Lighting: Everyone knows that reading in the dark was bad for our eyes, right? You’ll want to make sure there’s some sort of adequate lighting to provide a bright atmosphere for reading. I currently use a pole lamp but would love to incorporate some wall mounting lighting.

Accessories: A collection of books (and/or magazines) of course,

a warm comfy throw,

a foot stool (I’m still scouring estate and yard sales), coordinating accent pillows

and a few decorative accents that reflect your style.

Everything needed to inspire quiet time and reading. It’s my favorite spot in our living room, a little library corner.

For more design inspiration, check out the Sauder Look Book.

Do you have a designated reading space in your home? Do you have any tips to add for creating a quiet comfortable space?

*This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Sauder. The opinions and text are all mine.

Patio Umbrella Table Planter/Centerpiece

Love accessorizing the patio with flowers? me too! This repurposed bundt/coffee cake pan works perfectly for the center of our patio table.

patio umbrella table planter/centerpiece (repurposed bundt pan) @diyshowoff

Materials:

  • bundt cake pan (be sure the center hole can accommodate your umbrella). I used this coffee cake pan (affiliate link).
  • RustOleum spray paint
  • FrogTape
  • flowers, plants or succulents and potting soil

patio umbrella table centerpiece planter tutorial @diyshowoff

The tutorial is pretty self explanatory:  I simply gave the outside a coat of spray paint, taped off and painted some stripes for a fun look. I also poked holes into the bottom of the pan to allow for drainage. Then simply added some flowers.

Since our patio is right off the kitchen, we spend a lot of time dining, entertaining or just relaxing outside when the weather cooperates. How about you?

Outdoor Bistro Set Before and After

With summer right around the corner, it’s time to spruce up outdoor seating areas. The oil rubbed bronze of this bistro set matched everything nicely but it’s just so brown and tired.

Celebrate America Partyscape

  Celebrations Challenge #MichaelsMakers

It’s not often I’m way ahead of the game but when I am, it’s by more than three months. haha! As a part of the Michael’s Makers team, my final assignment came with a “Celebrate America” theme from the Celebrations campaign. Due in April. Yes, quite a bit early and especially since photos were actually due in March while there was still snow on the patio but it wouldn’t be a “challenge” otherwise, right? I had a blast decorating our dresser turned kitchen island in red, white & blue for a festive party. And hey, I’m happy to celebrate America any time of the year.

Supplies: Shop Home Decor and Floral at Michaels

  • wooden letters U, S, A
  • decoupage
  • red, white, blue designed scrapbook paper

What I did: Trace letters onto scrap book paper. Cut out scrap book paper shapes. Apply decoupage to wooden letter (works like a glue). Carefully line up scrapbook paper. Apply another layer of decoupage over top of the scrapbook paper to seal. Let dry and display.

Red, white and blue straws and red and white polka dot cupcake liners add to the patriotic color theme. There are little American flags near the cash register. Add a red/blue topper to the cupcakes (I found red and blue keys).

  1. Cut a piece of twine the length you’d like your banner to be. Tie loops on the ends for hanging.
  2. Cut pieces of mesh to tie onto the twine.
  3. Secure mesh with snips of star wire garland.
  4. Thread onto twine.
  5. Repeat until your banner is full. Fluff and display.

Tea Cup Candle Sconce Bird Feeder Tutorial

Like to attract bird’s to the backyard? Me too. Well…away from the patio where I enjoy sipping tea and starting my day with devotions.

The next time you’re at the thrift store, pick up an old candle sconce, tea cup and saucer to create a cute little bird feeder.

DIY tea cup candle sconce bird feeder tutorial @diyshowoff

What I used:

  • candle sconce
  • tea cup & saucer
  • Rust-Oleum Painter’s Touch Ultra Cover x2 (satin aqua)
  • sanding block
  • damp rag
  • E600 glue
  • clamp tape
What I did:

Lightly sand and clean candle sconce. Apply light even coats of spray paint and let dry.
Using glue, attach saucer and tea cup to candle sconce (saucer first then tea cup after the saucer has dried).
This is the first time I’ve used clamp tape. LOVE it! Worked really well to keep the pieces together while glue dried.
Let dry according to glue package instructions.

Hang, fill with bird seed and enjoy!
Pretty outdoor decor too. DIY tea cup candle sconce bird feeder tutorial @diyshowoff

I haven’t noticed if the birds are enjoying it yet. The food disappeared but it may just happen to be feeding the squirrels. lol  DIY tea cup candle sconce bird feeder tutorial @diyshowoff

Painted Chalkboard Labels

DIY painted chalkboard labels on storage cubes @diyshowoff

Our guest bathroom has some bins for keeping things stocked and organized. I know what’s in them, however guests have no idea. So I grabbed:

  • the bins from the shelf in the guest bathroom
  • FrogTape® Multi-Surface
  • chalkboard paint
  • foam paint brush

Here’s what I did:

Using my FrogTape, I taped off rectangles onto the front of the bins….

I burnished the edges of the tape with my thumbnail…

and gave each rectangle label area two coats of chalkboard paint.

While the paint was still wet, I carefully removed the FrogTape to reveal crisp clean paint lines! I let the paint dry.

I labeled the bins using a chalkboard marker.

Love Your Home Challenge

In 2007, we purchased a fixer upper farmhouse with the goal of creating our dream home and 8 years later, we’ve come a long way but it’s still far from being finished. Most times it’s finances that keep projects on the back burner. Sometimes things get a little out of hand and taking the time to care for our home becomes last priority. It happens. ::gasp:: I know. Lately, I’ve gone from seeing the potential and enjoying the journey to feeling like there’s never enough money, things are too cluttered and just feeling overwhelmed by it all.

Love Your Home

This couldn’t have come at a better time. I was invited to complete a simple Love Your Home Challenge and recently had the opportunity to read through an inspiring new book by long time blog acquaintance, Melissa Michaels from the Inspired Room, called “Love the Home You Have”: Inspiration to embrace imperfections, a reminder to focus on the blessings and to embrace “home”, no matter what stage it’s in, no matter what life stage we’re in. It reminded me to look at the things I do enjoy about this home. Baking in the kitchen when it’s clean…

Guest Room/Nursery reveal @diyshowoff

the lighting and thrifted charm of our family room…

an organized open pantry…

But it’s so easy to get caught up in what’s not finished, what’s not perfect, to lose sight of creating a dream home right where we are. And I couldn’t help but put the book aside to tackle an area that I’ve been putting off. Something simple. The dreaded drop zone that used to be our dining room table…

#loveyourhomechallenge

Yikes! #loveyourhomechallenge

“Love the Home you Have” is a simple reminder that one small step a day of taking care of the little things contributes to a happy home. Whether it’s simply wiping down the cabinets, decluttering, cleaning, rearranging furniture or clearing the dining room table. Something, anything – brings about a sense of accomplishment and contentment.

Love The Home You Have from The Inspired Room on Vimeo.

My mission: organizing the mess, putting things away, a little light cleaning, shopping the house for a fresh touch. The room still needs painted. I still look at the built-ins and cringe. I have a completely different vision in mind but for now I can focus on the things I do love when I walk through this room. I can enjoy the beautiful barn wood trestle table. I have a clear line of vision to the sliding door that gives me a thrill and I can plan the first step to turning the entire room into a room I’ll drool over…someday. But in the meantime – it’s clean. It’s de-cluttered. It’s no longer overwhelming. It makes me happy.

I’ve been working on some products for Rust-Oleum (spring = welcome back spray painting season!!!) and wanted to share this with you too. I couldn’t have you thinking I’d abandoned the blog. I’m still here, still working. No worries.

If you’re crafty and enjoy DIY, you likely have a can of Rust-Oleum already in your supply stash. Grab a branch or twig from the yard and get all spray paint happy with it.

spring twig centerpiece tutorial @diyshowoff

I used Rust-Oleum Ultra Cover x2 (color/finish = seaside/gloss).

Once it’s dry, clip on a faux bird and settle a nest in the branches (hot glue if you’d like a little more security) and voila! A spring centerpiece in the time it takes for spray paint to dry.

Striped Gallery Wall

A little cabin fever with sub-zero temps had me looking at areas of our home to “clean” up which lead to painting a striped gallery wall. Strange how my brain works but once I cleared the bookcases (so much dust!), that inspired the idea to dress up the entire area.

What I used:

  • FrogTape® Multi-Surface
  • paint – I used leftover paint from our laundry room. Color is Valspar Mineral Ash. Existing wall color is Benjamin Moore Smoky Taupe.

What I did:

I cleaned the wall above our build in bookcases. I marked where the framed prints hang on the wall then using the level, marked light pencil lines horizontally.

DIY striped gallery wall tutorial @diyshowoff

Then I applied the FrogTape.

DIY striped gallery wall tutorial @diyshowoff

I used my thumbnail to secure the edges of the FrogTape to the wall in order to get nice crisp paint lines.

DIY striped gallery wall tutorial @diyshowoff

Then simply painted the wall two coats.

DIY striped gallery wall tutorial @diyshowoff

While the second coat was still wet, I removed the FrogTape and let the paint dry.

DIY striped gallery wall tutorial @diyshowoff DIY striped gallery wall tutorial @diyshowoff

Then hung up my prints and restyled the bookcases. Paint is such an easy way to create a new look, add some interest and to freshen up the space.

Now to come up with some seating for this area. Stay tuned!

Springtime in Paris vignette {Enter to win a trip to Paris!}

#springtimeinparis #michaelsmakers @diyshowoff

I sure wish it was springtime in western PA but until that day arrives (hopefully sometime in the very near future), I’m enjoying the Michael’s Makers March challenge: “Springtime in Paris”. I paired pretty French script pillows with a pretty DIY springtime arrangement in a decoupaged French script vase with matching frame to bring a little “Springtime in Paris” to our home.

decoupage vase @diyshowoff #SpringTimeinParis #michaelsmakers

Supplies:

How to:

Working in sections. Brush on a coat of decoupage.

decoupage vase @diyshowoff #SpringTimeinParis #michaelsmakers

Due to the shape of my tin vase, I applied strips of tissue paper in layers.

decoupage vase @diyshowoff #SpringTimeinParis #michaelsmakers

Apply one strip to the wet decoupage, smoothing out the wrinkles (carefully to avoid tearing the tissue paper) then move on to the next section and repeat.   decoupage vase @diyshowoff #SpringTimeinParis #michaelsmakers decoupage vase @diyshowoff #SpringTimeinParis #michaelsmakers

Once the entire vase is covered, brush on another coat of decoupage. You can repeat and add more decoupage layers if you want. The more layers, the better protection.

decoupage vase @diyshowoff #SpringTimeinParis #michaelsmakers decoupage vase @diyshowoff #SpringTimeinParis #michaelsmakers

Let dry. The metallic sheen shines through. Love that happy surprise!

decoupage vase @diyshowoff #SpringTimeinParis #michaelsmakers

Now arrange your favorite spring time florals. I love this collection of faux teals, oranges and purples with greenery.

Gorgeous! Spring is right around the corner!

I added a bit of tissue paper and French language flash card to a frame {le jardin = garden}, some things from around the house and pillows (also available at Michael’s) to complete my Springtime in Paris vignette.

Striped DIY “Love You More” Sign

I like to incorporate a little Valentine’s vibe into my decor this time of year but I prefer to have decorative accents that can withstand longer time frame. Creating a “love” themed vignette works year round and this striped scrap wood sign is the perfect focal point.

striped Valentine LOVE sign @diyshowoff.com

Materials I used:

  • scrap wood for canvas
  • paint
  • FrogTape® Multi-Surface
  • vinyl decals

What I did:

Sand edges and clean scrap wood canvas.

Paint base color and let dry. I did two coats.

Use FrogTape to create stripes. I started with a center stripe and worked my way out. Just eyeball it. Use a small piece of FrogTape for spacing.

I added DIY vinyl decals. Other options include a print/rub technique (print out wording, rub pencil on the back of the paper then place paper on wood sign and trace lettering) and paint or marker or stickers…get creative!

DIY Color Block Painted Door Makeover

Remember when I finished the combined nursery / guest room  makeover a few months ago…

combined nursery/guest room @diyshowoff

I had a few finishing touches left to share. One of them was taking this plain door that leads to the guest bathroom…

chevron color block door tutorial @diyshowoff

and giving it a fun look. Paint is such an easy way to make a fun and bold statement, add a pop of color and definitely a touch of “wow” to the room…

chevron color block door tutorial @diyshowoff

What I used:

  • plain white door
  • sample of Valspar paint (color: rushing stream, finish: satin)
  • paintbrush
  • FrogTape
  • yard stick and pencil

What I did:

1. I gave the door a good scrub. Amazing how unnoticeable the dust is on those recessed panels. Who knew?

2. Using my yard stick, I found the center point of the door horizontally. Then made marks for where I’d like each “chevron” point to be. I didn’t really space them out exact. From the top, the first section is 14 inches down.

3. Using FrogTape, I created a “v” shape. I eye-balled the angle.

4. I repeated the “v” shape. A lot of my spacing and angle had to do with the panels, not exact measurements.

chevron color block door tutorial @diyshowoff

5. I used my thumbnail (a credit/gift card would also work) to burnish the edges of the tape.

chevron color block door tutorial @diyshowoff

6. I painted one coat and let it dry. Then brushed on a second coat.

chevron color block door tutorial @diyshowoff chevron color block door tutorial @diyshowoff

7. While the paint was still wet, I removed the FrogTape. Try pulling away from the paint, as shown:

Before:

After: I am in love with the large scale bold design. It’s so unexpected and fun.

and just that small project makes a big statement, doesn’t it?

I’m done! Our home is ready for Christmas! Have you been following the Holiday Home tours this week? I’ve found following the tours motivates and inspires me to get things done. Take a little time, follow along and be inspired to dig out your decor and get started or rearrange what you have going on already for a fresh new look.

Stopping by from the beautiful home of Jenna Sue Design? Welcome, friends! I love her fun style. What a pretty holiday home!

I didn’t decorate as much as previous years but I managed to juggle being a new grandma AND decorating our home for the holidays. Most of the time with a sweet little baby in my arms. If you’re a DIY Show Off reader, you’ve seen a bit of my Christmas decorating already but I’ve completed things and edited what I already had going on just a bit along with adding some new.

Easy Personalized DIY Ornaments

easy personalized DIY ornaments @diyshowoff #lowescreator

Making up a personalized DIY ornament doesn’t have to be super involved, complicated or expensive. As a part of the Lowe’s Creative Ideas December challenge, I grabbed these decorative ceiling medallion inserts from Lowe’s… easy personalized DIY ornaments @diyshowoff

Bonus: they were on sale. Check out the price…

easy personalized DIY ornaments @diyshowoff

Make up a pretty matching complete gift set with a mix of personalized ornaments using the photo/frame insert, paint the decorative one in coordinating colors and add in a few mirrored inserts (attach a monogram sticker).

Supply suggestions: photos, old holiday cards, wrapping paper or scrap book paper, alphabet stickers for monograms, paint, glitter, ribbon.

What I did:

I cut out scrapbook paper circles to fit in the photo/frame decorative ceiling medallion inserts x 4.

I added metallic gold lettering to spell “N – O – E – L”.

You know that as soon as I have printed pictures of the baby, grandma will be swapping out “NOEL” for grand baby bragging photos instead. How nice that they can then be displayed all year long then? Love it!

If you’re new to DIYShowOff, my tour started last month with a Michael’s Dream Tree Challenge. I always add a Christmas tree to our dining room and this year the theme is Succulents & Spruce {an enchanted evergreen} …

Using a few pretty pieces from Balsam Hill (mixed evergreen pine lighted teardrop, wood tabletop reindeer set, brown glen plaid ribbon) and adding in a candle, I created a pretty centerpiece…

Yarn Wrapped Reindeer {Secret Santa Blog Tour}

Yarn Wrapped Paper Maché Reindeer Head Tutorial

Yarn Wrapped Reindeer {Secret Santa Blog Tour}

But first – Hellooo, DIY friends! I have the pleasure of participating in a fun secret Santa blog hop organized by my sweet friend, Dria at DIO Home Improvements. Dria is a hard working, generous and talented blog friend with a big heart.

DIO Home Improvements

I was lucky enough to be Dria’s randomly chosen secret Santa. Here’s the DIY gift I made for her, hand-wrapped with love:

DIY yarn wrapped reindeer head @diyshowoff

A yarn-wrapped paper maché reindeer head. Isn’t he cute? I loved the earthy tones in the super soft acrylic/wool blend yarn. I think he’ll be a great holiday decorative accent in her beautiful home.   DIY secret Santa gift @diyshowoff

Materials: purchased from Michaels Craft Store

  • 1 skein of yarn (the thicker the yarn, the less work)
  • paper maché reindeer head
  • hot glue

DIY yarn wrapped reindeer tutorial @diyshowoff

Tutorial: It’s pretty self-explanatory. I started with wrapping the reindeer face, securing where needed with hot glue. The curved areas are a little tricky!

DIY yarn wrapped reindeer tutorial @diyshowoff

Then moved on to the antlers and ears, wrapping a large vertical portion then coming back and doing smaller areas.

DIY yarn wrapped reindeer tutorial @diyshowoff DIY yarn wrapped reindeer tutorial @diyshowoff

I hot glued any loose ends, adjusting yarn to cover paper maché where needed. And voila!

DIY yarn wrapped reindeer tutorial @diyshowoff

Then I simply added a gift tag, tucked in a few Yankee Candle pine scented ornaments, packed him up and shipped special delivery.

Giving is the best part of a secret Santa gift exchange, isn’t it? Getting a gift in return is icing on the cake and boy oh boy does my secret Santa know how to create, if you know what I mean.

Thank You

Along the same reindeer theme, Christy from Our Southern Home whipped up this beautiful chevron reindeer accent pillow. Just for me, you guys! Metallic gold chevron. Reindeer silhouette. I love it!

Metallic Gold Arrow Accent Wall Tutorial

A small plain wall is a great spot for adding some pattern and detail to a room. This small wall in the apartment nursery nook was just begging for a little attention. Here’s what we did to give it some pizzazz:

metallic gold arrow wall at diyshowoff.com

Arrow Accent Wall Tutorial

Materials:

What worked for me:

I started with creating triangle (arrowhead) vinyl stickers in my Silhouette Design Studio software. (Since I had some extra space, I created a few vinyl decals including the letter A and a deer head as well…they aren’t a part of this project.)

metallic arrow wall design tutorial @diyshowoff

I hit the “cut” button and adjusted the settings on my blade for vinyl.

metallic arrow wall design tutorial @diyshowoff

Load the vinyl into my Silhouette Cameo color side facing up.

metallic arrow wall design tutorial @diyshowoff

Hit “cut” and remove from machine.

metallic arrow wall design tutorial @diyshowoff

Weed away the excess vinyl (the vinyl that’s not a part of the design). Vinyl stickers. That fast!

metallic arrow wall design tutorial @diyshowoff

On the wall using a level and Sharpie, I drew vertical lines evenly spaced part.

metallic arrow wall design tutorial @diyshowoff

We then decided on placement of the arrow heads, alternating the direction every other line.

metallic arrow wall design tutorial @diyshowoff

I cut a “chevron” pattern from cardboard and used it to create arrow tails, again, evenly spaced and alternating the direction every other line.

metallic arrow wall design tutorial @diyshowoff metallic arrow wall design tutorial @diyshowoff

Ali used a piece of damp magic eraser to erase the Sharpie line between arrows (note for potential future reference: magic eraser works on removing permanent marker from walls).

metallic arrow wall design tutorial @diyshowoff

That’s it. I was hoping for a more staggered look, but even with drawing it out on paper, the final design had an alternating horizontal pattern too. Cool!

DIY Freestanding Mobile Pipe Coat Rack

Holiday season! That means some entertaining in our home, get-togethers with families, dinner parties (having a holiday open house today, in fact).  Time to get holiday guest ready! Did you ever notice that your own family fills up the coat closet (sometimes to the point of “avalanche!” when opening the door? Or is that just us?!)…and when guests arrive in colder months, coats are stored in the guest bedroom in a pile on a bed? Our solution:

DIY galvanized pipe and wood mobile coat rack on casters @diyshowoff #lowescreator

A DIY moveable, mobile coat rack. I am so over the utility types that teeter, lean or fall over when filled up. Know what I mean? This industrial looking DIY coat rack is sturdy, not to mention adds a touch of rustic industrial style.

Materials I used:

  • (1) 48 inch stair tread (I used red oak but for a more budget friendly option, there was also pine)
  • Rust-Oleum Ultimate Wood Stain (color is kona and ebony)
  • foam brush for applying stain, gloves & rags, paint brush for applying polyurethane
  • Rust-Oleum Polyurethane sealer (finish is satin)
  • (4) heavy duty casters
  • (2) 3/4″ flanges
  • (2) 24″ galvanized steel pipes
  • (2) 30″ galvanized pipes
  • (2) 3/4″ tee connectors
  • (2) 3/4″ nipple connectors
  • (2) 3/4″ 90 degree elbows
  • (2) 3/4″ 90 degree street elbows
  • (2) 3/4″ caps
  • (1) 36″ galvanized pipe
  • #12 1 inch hexagon washers (screws)

DIY galvanized pipe and wood mobile coat rack on casters @diyshowoff #lowescreator DIY coat rack with galvanized steel pipe and casters @diyshowoff

What I did:

Soak the sticker parts of the galvanized pipes in hot soapy water. (It doesn’t take long.) Remove stickers. Dry pipes and set aside.

DIY galvanized pipe and wood mobile coat rack on casters @diyshowoff #lowescreator

Finish the wood. Using the foam brush, I applied the wood stain (brush on in the same direction as the wood grain). Let sit for a few minutes then wipe away the excess with old rags. Unlike pine, the red oak wasn’t absorbing my favorite kona colored stain in as rich of a color so I also applied two coats of ebony in the same way to achieve a darker color. Stain then dries in about an hour.

DIY galvanized pipe and wood mobile coat rack on casters @diyshowoff #lowescreator

After the stain was dry, I sealed the wood using a coat of polyurethane. Simply brush on (looks a bit milky when wet but dries clear). I let that dry overnight.

I attached the four casters to the under (unfinished) side using the hexagon screws. Be careful with the screws on the cut side of the wood. Going too close to the edge may cause the wood to crack.

DIY galvanized pipe and wood mobile coat rack on casters @diyshowoff #lowescreator

Flip right side up. Set aside the nipple connectors, two street elbows and the caps.

Next I assembled my pipe pieces. Starting with the flanges. Screw 30″ pipes into flanges.

DIY galvanized pipe and wood mobile coat rack on casters @diyshowoff #lowescreator Then add tees to the other end of each 30″ pipe.

DIY galvanized pipe and wood mobile coat rack on casters @diyshowoff #lowescreator

Then add the other 30″ pipe sections (one to each tee – you’ll have two poles at this point).

DIY galvanized pipe and wood mobile coat rack on casters @diyshowoff #lowescreator

Add a 90 degree elbow to the top of one pole.

DIY galvanized pipe and wood mobile coat rack on casters @diyshowoff #lowescreator

Connect the 36″ galvanized pipe (center) piece. Add a 90 degree elbow to the end of the center pipe piece then add the other pole.

DIY galvanized pipe and wood mobile coat rack on casters @diyshowoff #lowescreator

Place the pole-contraption onto the wood stair riser (I found the center by using a yard stick).  Attach flanges to the wood using the hex screws.

DIY galvanized pipe and wood mobile coat rack on casters @diyshowoff #lowescreator

Add nipple connectors to the center tees, then elbows then caps. This creates a space for hanging purses, hats or scarves.

DIY galvanized pipe and wood mobile coat rack on casters @diyshowoff #lowescreator

Now when we’re expecting guests, we can simply roll the coat rack near the door for hanging coats. Or use it as extra hanging space in a room without a closet (or one with a packed closet). Handy to have in the laundry room too!

DIY galvanized pipe and wood mobile coat rack on casters @diyshowoff #lowescreator DIY galvanized pipe and wood mobile coat rack on casters @diyshowoff #lowescreator

Store it in the basement, a closet, the laundry room, an office or guest room and then move near the door for parties and gatherings. Or if you have room, display near the front door entryway or mudroom area.
