Comfort Works Custom Sofa Slipcover Review

Comfort Works logo

Next up on our DIY list is our family room renovation and the Comfort Works sofa slipcover review saved the day. It was just what we needed for motivation to get started. With so many do-it-yourself projects planned for this room, a new couch is not in the budget. Our hunter green striped La-Z-Boy is very outdated and not our style at all anymore but it’s definitely good quality and solid but not what we want for our family room. A custom slip cover is the perfect solution.

Our sofa before is outdated and not our style…

DIY Read Letters

DIY “READ” letters tutorial: I recent shared where I read and what I’m reading…

DIY Show Off reading nook

See that sliver of bare wall to the left? GASP! I’m not a minimalist so I decided it needs something. A quick trip to the craft store and I had an idea…

Aged/vintage inspired wall letters

Materials:

  • Cardboard letters spelling R-E-A-D (or “D-E-A-R” if I want to change them around)
  • Deco Art’s Americana craft paint
  • Dark brown glaze (I use Rockler’s TransTint dye)
  • Command velcro hangers
Tutorial:
1. I painted my letters and let them dry. I love this beautiful red (Deco Art Americana Tuscan Red)…
painting vintage inspired wall letters 2. Once dry, I sanded the edges for a distressed/worn look.
sanding vintage inspired letters after:

vintage inspired wall letters 4. Once the glaze was dry, I applied velcro hangers since the cardboard is so light. (And no holes in the wall…that usually doesn’t stop me though. Holes can be patched.)
5. My letters are centered and spaced evenly and secured to the wall with the velcro.

DIY Project Parade and re-arranging the living room.

thrifted gallery wall, hanging a gallery wall, plaster walls, decorating, do-it-yourself

Winter gives me spring fever. I love being snowed in when I don’t have to go out but I can’t sit still and get bored looking at the same old thing (as if I have time to be bored) but staring at the same four walls day in and day out and looking at tons of inspiration (thanks to my talented blog friends!) – well, it makes me itchy to re-do and re-arrange. And so, my living room was the victim of my decorating bug. Today, I give you the evolution of the living room.

Earlier this week I shared what I’m reading and where I read

Involving Color

I’ve “known” Jena from Involving Color for quite awhile and I not only love her creativity and beautiful home, I love her site.  She has some new features and really helpful tools so I asked her to share a little about it today. It’s a site you’re going to want to pin or bookmark for when you’re trying to choose a paint color. See paint colors in “real” rooms. Here’s Jena:

Hi, I’m Jena from Involving Color, and I’m so excited to be guest posting here on The DIY Show Off! I’ve been a long time reader of Roeshel’s blog, so when she asked me to come share a little about my site with you guys, I was beyond excited.

Involving Color is a blog all about paint color. I have hundreds (and growing!) reader submitted rooms organized in galleries by paint color and room type. I even have a section just for painted furniture. I recently added a lot of functionality with an improved search and image tags, which I’ll talk about below.

DO IT YOURSELF – do something this weekend.

It’s calling for snow here. The warmer temps were just a tease. Snow for me means staying at home. Just some quick, easy ideas for motivation all to start somewhere small this weekend to accomplish something productive. For me, it always leads to bigger things. Taking 15 minutes to do one of these, almost always inspires me to work a little longer and accomplish a little more.  Here is what works for me:

  • Clean off the kitchen counters. Before I know it, I’m scrubbing things down, sweeping the floor, wiping down the fridge. I love a clean kitchen. marble subway tile, back splash, do it yourself, virginia mist granite, hanging mugs
  • Sort through a junk drawer. Organize chaotic papers and receipts, put ‘quick clean shoved’ items where they belong. Having everything where it belongs feels so good. craft room, organization, vintage, craft supplies, home office
  • Make the bed. In our home, this doesn’t happen daily but taking a minute to make the bed = picking up clothes, dusting and rearranging decor. I love when that happens! poster bed with curtains, turquoise and orange, do it yourself, bedroom makeover
  • Actually look at craft supplies and materials, then browse Pinterest for an idea. Time to get creative! craft supplies, organization, ribbon storage

Do you have do-it-yourself plans this weekend? I do! Mine involves primer and paint. How about you?

Inspiring Living Room Reveal – The Painted Hive

When Kristine from the Painted Hive revealed her living room, my mouth may have been hanging open. I might have drooled. Mostly, I’m inspired.

Sigh…isn’t this straight out of a magazine? She has a beautiful home.

We’re starting our family room makeover (more on that coming Sunday) but I’d love to copy/paste Kristine’s living room into my family room.  If I was technically savvy…I’d make that happen. 😉

The living room is open to the dining room and it’s just has dreamy. I love the mix of rustic and industrial, don’t you? Some people just have a talent for pulling it all together beautifully…

One last peek, then you’ll have to visit The Painted Hive for MORE including details, more Pin-worthy photos, DIY, links, sources and cost breakdown.

Happy Valentine’s Day, friends!  xoxo

The DIY Show Off

I live in the north, might be suffering symptoms of cabin fever, seasonal affective disorder and just lo-o-o-o-nging for sunshine and fresh air, open windows, green grass, warm temperatures and longer days but I do always remember that I am blessed and have so much to be thankful for and don’t really sink into any sort of depression, just a little case of the ‘blahs’ and discouragement. Some days, I just dream of staying snuggled all day…

DIY Project Parade ~ vintage inspired craft room/office reveal

I think I’ve only shared a peek of my craft/office space in the past. I challenged my flu-fighting self to clean it up yesterday in order to accomplish something. It sometimes quickly becomes a dumping ground for everything craft related. Note, this is a tiny room…so while it looks like I may border on ‘hoarder’, it is all organized!  I confess, it’s not only craft supplies but just things I like and things that I might find a use for in the future. It is a lot crammed into one small room.

This room before was a spare bedroom that never got used…

I moved the bed to a guest room downstairs.

And moved my office/craft stuff upstairs. (So visitors don’t have to see a mess if I’m in the middle of a project.) Now, everything old looks fun and organized. I love that I don’t have to always use the dining room table for craft projects.

How to Reupholster Dining Room Chairs

I had the pleasure of meeting Ethan from One Project Closer in real life last summer at the Shaw/HGTV Home Design Challenge. Ethan was a partner in the winning team. The team at One Project Closer shares crafts and DIY tutorials and reviews. Today he’s here to introduce you to One Project Closer with an easy way to update chairs.

This is a guest post by Ethan from One Project Closer.

Reupholstering chairs and cushions may sound like a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be. With a few tools and some DIY spirit, you can give old seat cushions new life. My wife and her mother recovered six dining room chairs, and I was able to take pictures of the whole process. Read on to learn how you can conceal ugly stains and worn fabric on your own chairs.

Reupholstering Chairs

Reupholstering six chairs only took a few hours and it wasn’t very expensive at all. The cost is almost entirely the upholstery fabric so just wait until Joanne’s has a sale or you find a coupon. Here are the necessary tools and materials you’ll need before starting.

  • Heavy-duty stapler
  • 1/2″ staples
  • Screwdriver
  • Scissors
  • Upholstery fabric

Most seat cushions are held in place with a few (usually hidden) screws. Flip your chair upside-down and remove the screws. We found one in each corner.

We didn’t bother to remove the existing fabric because there’s really no need. You can just cover right over it.

My wife bought a fun zebra print upholstery fabric to give our dining room a fresh, new look. No matter what pattern you chose, just make sure it’s upholstery fabric because it’s more durable. Otherwise, your new seats won’t last very long.

Place the seat cushion upside-down on the upholstery fabric, and measure out the necessary dimensions. Add about three inches to each side so that the fabric will be long enough to wrap underneath the cushion. Remember, it’s better to have too much than too little. You can always cut any excess later. We oriented the zebra strips across the seat cushion. If your fabric has a pattern, make sure you keep it consistent with the other cushions.

We used a heavy-duty staple to staple the fabric to the bottom of the cushion. Starting on the front side, put staples every couple of inches. Then, on the opposite site (the back) pull the fabric tight (but not too tight) and staple that side. Repeat these steps with the other two sides, and leave the corners open for now.

As you’re stapling, the goal is to smooth away wrinkles, and the corners are the most difficult. To make the turn, we used overlapping pleats. Start on one side, make a small pleat and then continue in a likewise fashion through the entire corner. Staple the heck out of the corners!

After everything is stapled and you’re happy with how the cushion looks, trim away any excess fabric.

Once we had completed all six cushions, we sprayed ’em with ScotchGuard to better prevent any future stains. This was an important step because we have two young girls ages 1 and 3, and they always seem to spill or drop food. As you’re screwing the cushions back on, don’t over-tighten the screws or the wood may strip.

Now it’s time to enjoy the “new” chairs!
