We’re working on the kitchen! Here it is now:
When we moved in…
In progress…
Now (still working on stove backsplash and DIY kitchen island)…
Countertops are Virginia Jet Mist granite. Dark charcoal grey with random white veining. The closest we could find to soapstone but with less maintenance.
Installing tile backsplash tutorial {marble subway tile}
Marble subway tiles…so pretty! The picture below shows how we finished off the edge of the backsplash…
Walls are painted True Value’s “Old Fashioned”.
Isn’t it pretty? It’s perfect for showing off some reclaimed barnwood going in the room and our new distressed medium-tone bamboo floors.

I love it! We just bought a not so old farmhouse in March (built in 1987). It was very neglected. Our budget is limited so mostly just been painting but someday the kitchen will get redone completely. Yours is so inspiring!
Beautiful! I love everything about it! Where did you find your Potrack/Light? It is exactly what I am looking for!
Thanks, Rebekah! I’m sorry – I’m not going to be much help. We bought the pot rack for $5 at a Habitat Restore. I love the good deals, but not much of a source of help in finding the exact same thing. :/ Good luck in your hunt. I tried to do a quick google search for pot rack with lights but couldn’t find the exact thing.

Roeschel, thanks for inviting me back to view your home tour. Your kitchen is absolutely amazing. We live in an old house with a small kitchen, and our dream is to expand and modernize it in a few years. I love soapstone too, but not the expense, so I was most interested in your granite. And the marble subway tiles are so gorgeous! There are so many features that you’ve incorporated that make your kitchen unique. As a retired teacher, I’ve sat at desks just like the ones you’ve made into an island!
I started peeking around through Hometalk and ended up here drooling over your kitchen. LOVE the clean look and CLEVER details 🙂 Laurel
I am back staring at your kitchen again! I don’t know how you don’t walk around your house and just stare at everything. Maybe you do.or maybe that’s just odd little me that does that. I bought a valance for my kitchen and all I can do is stare at it and find an excuse to go walk through the kitchen to check it out! Tomorrow I will paint some walls. I dunno what walls but something is getting painted baby!
Hi Roeshel! Wow, stunning, beautiful, I can tell you out so much love & heart into this space. I just wanted you to know I featured a picture of this room on my blog today on behalf of Blogger Homes. Have a wonderful week, Jen @ City Farmhouse
I love, love, love your blog! Thanks for sharing. Got any advice related to your granite? It is gorgeous. Is it honed? Did you do any DIY with the granite or just save up lots of $$? 🙂
Thank you so much, Kate! There isn’t anything DIY related to our granite. Since we don’t finance projects, it is something we saved up for. The price was actually not quite as much $$ as we anticipated. The granite we chose is called “Virginia Jet Mist” and it has a honed finish. We also had it sealed (lifetime guarantee). Hope that helps!
What a lovely home you have Roeshel!! You’ve done an amazing job with it!! Love your kitchen, I’m going to have to look for that granite, we still have laminate in ours! And your outdoor space is fantastic!!
Thank you for replacing the counter with a non-back-lipped counter. Ugh, I hate the 3″ “backsplash” on counters. It looks so much cleaner and more spacious without it! Awesome makeover.
Oh I know what you mean, Debra! It’s one thing if it’s already there and you have to live with it but another to actually choose a 3″ backsplash.
Beautiful!
I love your kitchen and your kitty cat 🙂
Awe, thanks, M! 🙂
I love your kitchen! What paint did you use on the kitchen walls?
Thanks, Angela! The wall color is True Value’s Easy Care Platinum and the color is called “old fashioned”.
OH MY GOSH IT’S GORGEOUS! Well done! I love, love, love the floors, the back splash, your faucet and your sliding ladder! Good grief, girl, I don’t know what I like best!
I’m going back to look around again…so many great ideas and how to’s! Thanks for sharing this, Ro…it’s amazing! Happy Holidays! xo
I just found your blog today and I have to say, within minutes, it was pinned to my Start Page. I was shocked at how much your home completely reflects my tastes. Rustic Elegance is what I like to call it. I love everything about your story and your home. I’m not a blogger but I am obsessed with DIY décor, even though I have very little time left after the hours I work outside of the home to work on all of the ideas I have. I’m so inspired by your home; however, I am COMPLETELY BLOWN-AWAY with your use of two desks as an island. I couldn’t believe it. My mind started racing with ideas to take it further. Not that yours needs improving. But, I instantly thought that I would take it and build a rectangle box and attach blocks in the inside corners, which would stabilize the box but also if slightly shorter the than box itself, the legs could stand on these and then you wouldn’t see where the legs ended. I would take MDF and make cut-outs around the legs and then put it down on top of the box. Then I would paint the whole thing with gray milk paint. This idea would give it more height, but also give a place to put stacks of plates and some baskets. Although you couldn’t use the chairs anymore, you could use big ceramic crocks in the taller areas where the chairs had gone. Anyway, as I said, yours is perfect as is in your kitchen and I love it in it’s original state. Thank you, thank you, thank you for putting yourself out there and sharing such a beautiful home. I plan to be a long-time follower and I am excited to see what you what you do in the future. And yes, I know that was way more than a penny’s worth!!! 🙂
I have been browsing diy decorating blogs for about a year, and I have to say, your home and your tutorials are simply amazing. I love your taste, love the colors you use, and your kitchen is to die for. Granted, your farmhouse has great bones–not everybody gets that base to start out with–but you have such vision. I can’t wait to tour the rest of your home. Today I learned how to build cat perches for my kitties (all 8 are bound to fight over them), saw how to paint bath fixtures ORB. Your place doesn’t look diy at all. The materials you select, along with the colors, make it look very high end.
Ann, your comment made my day! Thank you SO much! I’m so happy you stopped by!
Roeshel, I love your kitchen transformation! The bright white cabinets contrast beautifully with the dark wood floors and island. I especially the junk/antique store storage find — Melissa
Where did you get your backsplash and what is the name/color of it? Thanks!
Hi Colleen! You can find all of the details with links/description/etc. on this blog post: https://diyshowoff.com/2011/03/20/diy-project-parade-back-splash-from-start-to-finish/
Hope that helps! xo
hi, i’ve just found your blog through pinterest and have found the exact inspiration we were looking for to make our vision for our kitchen complete. i love your honed virgina mist granite and just located it through our local distributor. I read in the comments that you had it sealed. is this standard or something i should ask for? i noticed when we went to select our piece that it shows water until it dries. does yours do this?
thanks for the inspiration and feedback!
Hi Elizabeth! Our fabricator does a standard seal it so there wasn’t any work on our end. And I’m not sure what you mean about water showing until it dries? Water spills? Water from cleaning (yes it looks glossy when wet then dries to a matte finish when dry). Hope that helps! Good luck!
Love the tile on the kitchen wall!! Could you please tell me its name and where I can find it?
Hi Kala! It’s from Home Depot. Here’s the blog post with more info: https://diyshowoff.com/2013/02/19/how-to-install-a-tiled-backsplas/
Thanks so much for stopping by! Good luck! xo
Wow, I love the combination of the clean white units with the rustic, dark wood island in the middle. I wouldn’t have been brave enough to achieve that.
And I love that patio set and chairs! I know it’s not part of the kitchen, but I’ll comment on it anyway because it looks lovely. Your style is so unique. That kitchen tap! Never seen anything like that before, but it fits in so well with the rest of the country kitchen.

This is a BEAUTIFUL Transformation! Love all the Colors and Farmhouse look! How long did your Renovation take you? Love all of your DIY Ideas. I will definitely take away some for myself and for others. Especially the Painted floor mat… (LOVE IT!) 🙂 The Marble Backsplash is Gorgeous. Looking forward to installing ours too! Btw, did you have to seal the backsplash? Some say you do, others don’t…. We just completed installing DIY concrete countertops for our Farmhouse look. Love your colors!
