DIY Fall Festival and 31 Days of Spooktacular

The DIY Show Off

Hi friends!  I’m Coley over at What You Make It and am thrilled to be joining you for the DIY Fall Festival.  What better day to be a guest poster?  After all, fall is my favorite time of year! Who doesn’t like vibrant colored leaves, pumpkin pie lattes, and cozy sweaters?

At the start of September I begin covering every inch of my home, interior and exterior, with autumn decor.  The aroma of pumpkins, apples, and squash fill my home and my open-toed shoes are put into storage. By October, my party menu is finalized and I’m jumping for joy with anticipation for our Halloween party.

Because of the fact that I am so neurotic about this holiday and that there are endless creative Halloween-related projects out there, I started a 31 Day Spooktacular Series on my blog.  That’s right, 31 posts about Halloween and the best season ever! Recipes, tutorials, guest posts, and costume ideas… anything to get you in the spirit.

So far, I have posted a few DIY projects like these specimen jars
these free Halloween printables (that look amazing in vintage frames)…

 adorable acorn bites
There are a ton of posts coming up (23 more to be exact)  that will give you even more inspiration. I would LOVE for you to join me!

Thanks for letting me share with you today!
I can’t wait to sit down with a hot cup of cinnamon tea, wrap myself in a fuzzy blanky, and look over your DIY Fall Festival link-ups.  Everyday I’m amazed at the creativity out there on blog-land :)

Project Sneak Peek

This isn’t much of a blog post today, just a sneak peek.  I was up late last night, up early today and working hard to finish the guest room within my ambitious one week time-frame. I am feeling every bit of my 41-year-old self with aches and pains from a crazy DIY work out but let’s ignore that. I can do this!  :)

Here’s the original design/idea board: I still don’t have a dresser, so that just might not be happening by Monday. I did find some other amazing thrifty finds yesterday during a quick trip to a semi-annual HUGE yard sale with the coolest things though.  I’ll share those soon.
Here’s a sneak peek of the project I’m currently working on and that I’m just about finished with (woo hoo for progress!)…
(more details coming soon!)

Have a great day!!!

Please don’t forget to vote for your favorite room and enter to win new flooring for your home! It’s the last two days! Enter to win today and tomorrow by voting (hopefully for room #3, coastal cottage/beach themed by Cassity and Roeshel)! We’d LOVE (and need) your help! Thanks! Good luck!

Roomspiration – Nurseries

There is no need for a nursery in our home but that doesn’t mean I don’t like looking at them and wishing my girls were little babies again.
If I had a little precious princess, her sweet room would be Restoration Hardware inspired using a soft pretty color palette…
It’d be filled with pretty and personal details…
My little boy would have a vintage or rustic themed nursery like these…
Here are a few of the nurseries I’ve featured over the past couple of years.  Sweet and inspiring real rooms by decorated by blog friends. Go ahead, pin these. These ladies deserve recognition for beautiful, inspiring magazine-worthy nurseries.

*I’d like to thank Emily for the correct pronunciation of “ikat”.  It sounds like “ee-kot”! All this time I’ve been mispronouncing it. I wish someone would have pointed it out! Of course you don’t know that I’ve been saying “i-cat” like some Apple version of a my furry pet, unless you’ve seen the videos!  Oh, I’m so embarrassed.  But, over it.  Lesson learned and thank you so much, Emily! For another lesson in pronouncing design terms, visit Lauren at Pure Style Home. She has a wonderful post about it!
Speaking of ikat! There are still 4 days left to enter to win new flooring for your home and to vote for Cassity & Roeshel.  Our coastal cottage room was designed about beautiful handscraped maple floors and a gorgeous “ee-kot” area rug! Visit Shaw Floors on Facebook to enter! Please! We really need your help these last couple of days!  Cassity is also giving away an area rug of your choice (even the ikat) at Remodelaholic!
And while on the topic of furniture.  Enter to win a designer ottoman kit at the DIY Club too!

BIG ROUND OF APPLAUSE to these bloggers for a DIY job well done and for sharing their talents and inspiration!  I’m motivated.  Heading to find a thrifty-budget once or twice loved dresser today! Wish me luck!

Thrifty Treasures

My girls and I went to Cappy’s the other day.  As you know, I moved my office/craft room to a smaller room upstairs in preparation for moving a guestroom to the main floor near the guest bathroom.

I found some crates for storage…

A huge wooden tool box for craft supplies…

Cute little wooden scissors for my gallery wall. .59 from the Thrift Store for a big back of wooden things. I took out the scissors and donated the rest back.
New lamps from Big Lots…not exactly thrifty but I love the texture it adds to the room and couldn’t pass them up.

More progress and updates coming this week!

Link up your thrifty treasures in the DIY Project Parade this week!  Have you found anything lately?

DIY Project Parade

Welcome to the weekly DIY Project Parade!
The DIY Show Off
I‘ve been crazy keeping up with the fun parties (Roomspiration, Good Mood Board and DIY Fall Festival) so my projects this week are in the works without much to share in the way of progress or tutorials.  Here’s a look back at what I worked on and posted this week in case you’ve missed them.
still a bit of work in progress to complete
The DIY Show Off was featured in our local newspaper (pg. 25)!
Woo hoo!  So excited!
Most items we already have or found at thrift stores/Habitat Restore.
I have to sneak this in here.  Well, not too sneaky, is it?  This is the last week!
There’s still time to vote for Cassity & Roeshel and enter to win new flooring for your home!
And last weekend’s DIY ottoman.  There’s still time to enter to win a designer ottoman
kit at The DIY Club!  You can make one too!
This week I intend to make BIG progress in the guest bedroom. I’d love to finish it up by the end of the week and there’s lots to do from floor to ceiling!  No procrastinating, no excuses! Does anyone have a coupon code for Serena & Lily or Layla Grace?  I absolutely want the bedding shown in my mood board but it’s not at all budget friendly, especially for a guest room, especially when the room needs a lot of work.  I can’t get it out of my mind now that I’ve seen it and nothing else I come across appeals to me now!  :(
Let’s see what’s been keeping you busy!

DIY Fall Festival (and Roomspiration – Dining Rooms)

The DIY Show Off
Jena from Involving Color is kicking off Roomspiration – Dining Room edition today. She’s the perfect host for the dining room edition. She has a gorgeous inspiring dining room!  With the DIY Fall Festival falling on the same day as Roomspiration – dining rooms, I dug out some fall decor and made the dining room mantel and buffet festive.

Mantels at

The Lettered Cottage
A great place for Fall inspiration!

I used a mix of traditional fall colors and added a bit of blue. I want to do something different for a centerpiece next week but for now, I’m working with what I could find in my stash of autumn.
Dining Room Mantel
The “pumpkins” are  .59 thrift store balls of yarn.
The pine cone candle holders are new.
Buffet (old vintage dresser)
More shots of our dining room.
This wall before had an ugly door without character when we bought our home.
Barn door track was a $30 Craig’s List find.  Glass door is original to the house, found in the barn.
Mantel is also original to our house, stored up in the barn rafters for years.
Just for fun, this was our dining room when we bought our home…
This is our dining room today. Quite a change! What we did:  Tore down ceiling tiles and put up dry wall ceiling, changed out light fixture (to be changed again one of these days), ripped out carpet and sanded/refinished pine planks and now new distressed wide plant bamboo flooring has been installed, swapped out ugly door for prettier one and changed the door trim to matching wider trim and of course – painted.  :)

What do you think?  Do you decorate using traditional colors or do your own thing?

Link up! Inspire me! FALL DIY and decorating ONLY please!

Roomspiration – Craft Rooms

Roomspiration
Have you been following along and participation in the Roomspiration series?  Today it’s Craft Rooms hosted by Shan from

You MUST see her awesome craft room! It’s so organized and pretty and you’ll drool!

My craft room/office combo is actually in the works. I’m in the process of moving my office/craft room upstairs (to be able to close the door when it’s a disaster) and create a pretty guest bedroom downstairs. I just emptied this room:

Before (although the twin bed has been gone for about a year)

Now that room is completely empty.  When we moved in, we removed the gross carpet and just live(d) with plywood.
(cleaning out in progress…)
The mood board I created is intended for this room!
And there wasn’t a door on the bathroom!  We added one soon after we moved in and it’s time to add trim to this side of the door frame. The opening on the right used to be a walk-through closet. It’s now our laundry room. (Another project one of these days!)
Okay – enough about the guest room! Back to the craft room!

Most of my craft junk has been moved into our unfinished family room.  It looks like this…YIKES!  Where does all that stuff come from?!!!
Just keeping it real!  The family room is another project on our DIY list.

However, here’s where what I’m keeping is all getting moved to, everything in it’s place…

I‘m not quite finished and it’s all just moving, re-organizing, sorting and purging and using things I already had into a room that didn’t need re-painted at this time.  I still have to move my sewing machine in here. Nothing new in the room but it really needed organized and downsized and I love the way just a new location with old t
hings feels fresh and new, don’t you?

DIY Ottoman, DIY Project Parade and Giveaway Alert!

Hello, DIY’ers!  How was your weekend?  Productive? Relaxing? Fun?  I hope all three! Show and tell time! I’ll go first. I’m still tweaking this catch all/entry area but having so much fun doing it.  See the ottoman below?  We built it! I’m linking up to
freckled laundry
Head over to see some gorgeous inspiration!

Remember when I mentioned we were building an ottoman and that I’d share the spot inside where we enter our home?  Well, here it is! It’s just a little nook for right now until we have a real front door (next year?) or until we save enough for Mr. DIY’s dream stand alone refrigerator and freezer, then this little nook in the kitchen goes away. But for now I love that we have a little space to sit comfortably, put on or take off shoes and dump everything when walking in the door.
(Wow…construction in the kitchen creates dust. I thought I got it all!  I’ll be taking care of that refrigerator vent asap!)
Lalka is my shadow so she’s usually right where I want to snap pictures – diva kitty!
The ottoman frame (everything except the feet and fabric actually) were provided by The Upholstery Studio. They have entire kits for DIY ottomans! That means, for this 24×26 ottoman, I only picked out the fabric and bun feet and the rest was all ready to be assembled with the assistance of detailed instructions and helpful video. Mr. DIY and I built this together with our own two hands.  Here’s a little of what we did:

Pre-dill holes

Glue and screw together the frame

Attach webbing
Add burlap

Glue down foam and cover wood with dacron.

Cover in batting

Cut fabric
and sew cover
Slip on cover and staple

Create welting

Staple on welting
Cover up

Add feet
It can be built in just a few hours although I recommend taking a few days…better to spread it out a little and take your time.  I’m so proud that we built it ourselves and I also learned some cool things along the way. Interesting bits that definitely help with future projects.  Super sturdy construction and bouncy comfy seating! It’s empowering – I feel like I could build an entire couch!  Well, you really wouldn’t want to see that but the entire learning process was very helpful for when re-upholstery skills are needed on a future thrift store find. The kit looks a little overwhelming at first because of all of the goodies packed inside, but it’s not hard. It was actually fun and more like a complete course in re-upholstery with everything needed to build the perfect accent piece that matches your style.
I even had a blast designing the fabric myself at spoonflower. If it fits your style, you can purchase it too. Yep, add fabric designer to my list of DIY. Easy and exactly what I wanted…personal/cooking related and a little typography-looking but not girly or too kitchen-y.

Since it sits in our kitchen, I wanted to personalize it for the cook my husband. I really love that it’s exactly what I wanted for this space. I have plenty left to make some throw pillows or covers for bar stools or even valances.  I’m still undecided.

What do you think? Show of hands:  How many of you have an ottoman in your kitchen? ::crickets
::  Anyone?  :)

And guess what?!  There’s a designer ottoman kit giveaway going on at the DIY Club right now!  Head over to enter to win a designer ottoman kit for yourself and also see how Cheri, Holly and Amy took their designer ottoman kit and created something that fits the style of their home too.

Let’s see what’s been keeping you busy!

Special thanks this week to these two ladies.  Just when I’m feeling a little insecure, my blog friends (you all) make me smile. Yesterday, these sweet acts of kindness completely put a stop to my pity party for one:

Lindsey from

It’s been another crazy week with me still having a heavy work load and the Roomspiration linky parties and voting and Mr. DIY’s birthday and even though the chilly weather won’t let me forget it’s Fall already, I did have a chance to add a touch of fall to our living room (see the before and after pictures I shared earlier this week here).

This week I decorated the mantel for Fall. Our mantel is a bit of a challenge with the tv being there and the need to disguise wiring but I like how it turned out this year.

Candle light and warm colors = coziness.

What do you think?  Busy? Yes!  Just the way I like it! ;)

Do you decorate for fall?
Link up! Inspire me! FALL DIY and decorating ONLY please!

Roomspiration – Bathrooms

Roomspiration
Isn’t the Roomspiration so much fun?! Have you been linking up and visiting the links?  I love seeing inspiring bathrooms – real homes, real functional spaces and transformations, don’t you?  Today I’m joining SJ at

She has a beautiful master bathroom reveal.
We actually have 5 “bathrooms” in this old farmhouse which consist of a powder room in the unfinished basement (actually in the old scary original cellar part) which is only used because of convenient location when we’re down there working on a project. No, I won’t share that one with you at this time.  It’s clean with the exception of perhaps a spider because of it’s rare use.  When we get to remodeling the basement, renovating the small powder room be a part of the plan.

I‘ve shared these next two before, but I love that I can show you how they’ve held up and stood the test of time AND have a little motivation to clean for current photos.  :)

On the first floor, we have a guest bathroom and a powder room.  These I will share with you. Both were budget friendly and serve as pretty functional use for us as well as guests in our home.

Powder room before was closed for business.
We took everything out and started from scratch.
(Sorry this is so gross!  It’s aood thing we could see the potential in this old house – a lot of areas were disgusting.)
It was originally a closet back in 1927.
Now it’s light and bright and clean…

The first floor guest bathroom before was ugly but being a bathroom used by guests, I wanted to make it less of an embarrassment.
When we bought the house (minus the carpet – yes, carpet)…
Now…
When we bought the house except there was no door there.
Now…
The painted and stenciled floor was a budget friendly waterproof solution until a bigger budget is dedicated to this area.

The last two bathrooms in our home are upstairs.  One full hall bathroom and a dinky teeny tiny master bathroom. Seriously – you probably have a closet that’s larger.  Those I will not share until I have a pretty ‘after’ transformation to ‘show off’.  They’re both ugly, outdated and gross but one step at a time. Remember, we DIY and remodel as time and money allow. No debt.  So until a few main floor projects are completed, those will stay our little secret.

Let’s see what you’ve done with your bathrooms!  Head over to join us at

and link up your bathroom makeovers!

I’m also joining my friend Cassity today at

Bedroom Renovation – Memoirs of a little thing called life

Hellooooo, DIY’ers.  I recently “e-met” Chloe from

Memoirs of a little thing called life | Fashion and life in Leeds

“We recently bought a house that was built in the 1830s over in England. (How cool!)  It needed a complete renovation, serious renovation works, we may as well have rebuilt it. This is the main bedroom which we split into two. We tried to keep as much of the character as possible including the original floors and fireplace.”

I love old homes and old European homes have so much character.  This was Chloe’s bedroom before:

Now it’s an adorable country farmhouse bedroom full of 1830s charm…

The room is full of family treasures…

 Gorgeous vintage/sentimental (her Nan’s) chandelier…
“found” fireplace

Isn’t it adorable?  I just love it!

See more pictures, details and in-progress pictures at

There’s a lot of fun, thrifty fashion finds to inspire you too!  :)

Roomspiration – Living Rooms

Roomspiration
Another fun day of Roomspirations – Living Room edition hosted by Kelly at
View Along theWay
I haven’t share much about our living room in a while.  Nothing exciting or new going on in there except my new Shaw Ikat panel rug (you can win one HERE – Hurry! Today’s the last day to enter!).  The rest of the room is a “working with what we have” while other more important projects are going on.  It’s comfortable and it’s where Mr. DIY, Lalka and I hang out in the evenings.  In fact, I’m sitting on the love seat right this minute as I’m typing this up. There’s a lot going on in our living room but we love it.
Our living room that will undergo another DIY transformation again one of these days but not any time soon. When we bought this house, it had old nasty stinky carpet.  Walls were painted wallpaper.  First thing – out came the carpet and pine floors were sanded, stained and poly was applied.  Wallpaper was scraped and  painted.

Before
After – you never see cat trees/posts/condos in magazines…but it’s real life for cat owners. I do love that hers is a neutral ivory fleece.
Because of the layout of the room – see the pictures where there is something on every single wall…the tv is most convenient over the fireplace for us and believe it or not, we don’t suffer from neck issues.  :)
Before
After

Before

After – French doors now separate this living room with another family room/library/office room (not even touched yet – another project for another time).  Sorry about the blinding lamp on the left…took this picture at night. (Lalka can usually be found at the top of Mt. Kitty.)

Before – scraping painted wallpaper over plaster walls. Not fun!

After

What do you think?  Now how about you?  Head over to the View Along the Way to see Kelly’s beautiful living room and join us in sharing your living room in the Roomspiration party!  Here’s the schedule for the rest of the linky parties. Hope to see you there!

Autumn Love Pinterest Linky Party

Welcome to the first official
A special thanks to Heather from At The Picket Fence for the DIY button makeover. Isn’t it pretty?! Inspired by the colors from the “Cassity & Roeshel” room design challenge. Heather, dear blog friend – you are so sweet and talented and I love my special gift. Thank you!

Cooler temps, shorter days and changing leaves are making it hard to ignore that Fall is here.  I’m daydreaming of new boots, warm sweaters, warm, rich colors, spicy autumn scents and mouth watering comfort foods & aromas coming from the kitchen. Snuggling in and getting cozy. Here is my autumn Pinterest daydream in pictures…some of which are inspiring enough to become reality in my home…

Pardon my casualness but this is my favorite attire for fall…
This year I’m decorating for fall in soft muted creams, browns and golds with a touch of smokey turquoise, deep red and rusty orange this year:
I love turquoise paired with orange almost as much as with red…

Roomspiration – Entryways

Let’s get this party started!

Roomspiration
What better way to kick off Roomspiration than with welcoming entryways, right?  Pop over, knock on a few bloggers’ doors by visiting Laurel Dawn at Abode Love  (her entryway is GORGEOUS!) and walk right into some inspiring entryway links.
Technically, we don’t have a front door or entryway yet.  Previous owners enclosed the front porch/front door area and now it opens to the side.  We don’t use that entryway at this time, we use the set of French doors off the kitchen.  So, until hopefully next year when we knock out a wall in the enclosed porch and add a beautiful front door area and entryway, I’m bending the rules for me and here is where we enter our home and what currently qualifies as our front entryway…
I’ll be sharing the entry way area in our kitchen coming up soon.  :)

And here’s another entryway, the second set of French doors at the back of our home…

This area has actually undergone some changes but it’s not finished yet.  Another day or month or couple of months. I’ll spare you the other two entryways because they are frighteningly ugly and it’s not Halloween yet!

Head over to join the fun and link up your entryway at

abode love: a man's home is his wife's castle
Here’s the rest of the schedule so you can join the parade and see more home inspiration! I’ll be sharing some of our finished rooms that you’ve probably seen if you’re a DIY Show Off fan, but I’ll take some fresh pictures so it won’t be so boring for you. And if you’re a new reader…you’ll get a look at where I live.

Don’t forget to come back tomorrow for the

DIY Project Parade

It’s that time of week to share your latest DIY projects!  We’ve been doing a LOT of things around our home this past week. For those who have asked, I do have a regular job as a medical transcriptionist for a local health care facility so for some of what I’m showing you below, there just hasn’t been time to do a tutorial (the wood shed Mr. DIY’s building or venting the bathroom fan). I’m sure you understand, right? We’re always here to answer questions though!  Anyway, here are some sneak peeks that prove our crazy week.  Pardon me while I step away from the computer for a nap. :)

It’s time for grape harvesting (although we don’t have time for grand plans just some fresh grapes and grape juice).

The grapes smell so good, taste so sweet and are bursting with juice…

(We never did do pavers underneath yet. Thanks to Krylon‘s spray stain, the wood is protected!)

Some other goodies from the garden were picked…

Building an ottoman…

and staining feet…
Bun feet, TransTint and foam brushes are available at Rockler. See more about the products and technique I used at The DIY Club.

Mr. DIY with the assistance of his talented father-in-law, Butch, is building a wood shed for firewood…

and vented the bathroom fan through the attic and out the side of the house…

Cleaned for photos and had an interview with our local newspaper…
butler eagle

We’ve decorated for Christmas (details coming up in the future) and packed some of it back up…

Scrubbed down a thrifty find…

Took care to protect the floor using felt weather stripping, Gorilla Glue and felt furniture protectors (see the DIY Club for more details)…

Even Lalka pitched in.  (More on this project coming up in a few weeks)

Some of these projects are finished and I’ll be sharing more soon.  :)

Let’s see what’s been keeping you busy!

DIY Fall Festival

It’s been a crazy week and even though I haven’t had a chance to even think about Fall yet (other than throwing on a sweater), I think I’ve finally decided that Fridays would be a great day for the DIY Show Off Fall Festival this year and then the regularly scheduled DIY Project Parade on Sundays/Mondays.
And since I’ve been working hard at a few non-autumn related projects and had an extra work load at my real job, I haven’t had time to think about Fall yet however here are a few of my past Fall projects to get things started. I know. I’m cheating. I mean these are my DIY Fall projects but Fall 2011 hasn’t arrived in this house this week.  It was cheat a little or cancel and I’m no party pooper!

dress up a candle…
decoupage letters and a pumpkin…

Burlap leaves

ghost tree and faux mercury glass pumpkins…
Can’t wait to get started on Fall now that I’ve met some of my deadlines.  Link up! Inspire me!
